I used to think this way until

I bought a house.  When you rent or live at home with parents, all the repairs are paid for.  You can actually make a budget and stick to it, putting such amount in savings.  Not so with kids/pets and a mortgage with house repairs.  When you have next to nothing in the bank, you can bet something will happen to take the rest and then some. 

This is why some people are checking the bank the night before payday to see if their direct deposit has come in yet.
