you think about that, that is about as low as anyone can get to just run people out of work for whatever reason when people need money to live, pay bills, support children and feed them, etc. When you really think about that, people's lives hinge on their income and as far as I am concerned, that is the worst thing any company can due to the people that work for them. That is how I feel today because I have been out of work and scrounging for lines and I am disgusted with the whole business. I hope that companies will soon wake up and stop doing this to people. It is disgusting.

MQ and many other companies hire people for 40 hours
a week with a minimum production amount, but still required to work 40 hours a week, some say 32 hours a week, but a minimum number of hours either way.
My people skills are just fine. I just want to hire people who want to work.
I've not been ugly, I've asked questions, legitimate ones.  Please tell me what is wrong with that.  This site is not just for MTs, it is for QA Editors, Supervisors, Service Owners, there's even sections for Billers, Coders, and Nurses.

Lot's of people work for cheatin companies. They bide their time and strike when they can.
As for me, I have joined a class action law suit on behalf of shareholders and MTs.  Double whammy.  Not too dumb.  By the way, don't you have some managing to do or are you on duty all day to try to make MTs think MQ is AOK and everything else going on around them financially is just a figment of their imagination.

if you are working, getting above the mininum required, and even getting the incentive rate you have nothing to worry about. If for some reason a report takes longer than 'they' think it should, you should document why. You sound like an extremely good worker so you should have an idea of how long each report should normally take and document anything that puts you over that time limit--research/difficult doctor/whatever.

The management may just be justifying their jobs. I agree with your take on leaving high producers alone and dealing with the others individually. Good luck.

WHY do companies say they hire QA from within? Do
they not understand that MT and QA are two completely different positions, and that if an MT wanted a QA position, she would've applied for it in the first place?  This has got to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of.  Rather than hire someone with 10+ years of QA experience, you'd rather 'promote' an MT to become a newbie QA & have to train them from scratch how to QA? Or make someone who's been a professional QA for years become an MT again, when the reason they became a QA in the first place probably had to do with their hands giving out?!  Again, it's not a promotion -- it's a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT JOB.  Sometimes I wonder if the people in charge of making these decisions have any MT experience at all.  <end of rant>
Sometimes companies hire ICs for
overflow, sometimes permanently. As an IC you do have to purchase your own insurance and you get no vacation time. Some places will pay extra for holidays even as an IC, but you will not get "holiday pay" if you do not work. You set your own hours, if the MTSO is willing for you to work those fine. They cannot set in stone your hours, but they CAN say when they have work available if it is not 24/7 and you can choose to work or not.
And that will happen right after the companies who hire...
these illegals finally start getting punished by breaking the law that says they canNOT hire illegals! The whole term "illegal" has taken on quite a new meaning, hasn't it? Just refers to the US citizens these days, I guess - get caught speeding get a ticket. Get caught creeping into our country, get amnesty. Such a world this has come to!!!!
I'd start looking now. Few companies hire newbies so

it make take a while to find a position, or at least a legit one.  There are some companies that will offer to mentor you for no pay or almost no pay.  Avoid any company that says you need equipment/software and you have to buy it from them.  You may need equpiment/software for the position, but should not have to buy from them.


Start posting your resume on the various job boards to see what bites you get.

AND TWO DOCTORS RETIRED AND TWO MIDWIVES LEFT!!! And the best part - I absolutely positively loved that job with all my heart, and didn't care that I was making $13/hour because my rent was so ridiculously low. But when she made that comment, I walked out, and she opened up a whole new door for me - I now make $68,000/year and granted I do work 45-50 hours a week sometimes, I wouldn't change it for the world.

So I will let her go and feed the monkeys at the zoo.
Do they hire people that haven't finished their MT course yet?
I'd like to know what kind of test they give people, folks who have barely even started the transcription portion of their MT course, yet they're being hired as MTs. Gives us all a bad name.
what ARE these companies thinking?
I have been looking for a part-time job to supplement when my full-time is low on work.  I have this one lady who contacted me that she had a part-time position but it would require me to work every Friday, Saturday and Sunday as well as a few days during the week.  She already knew I had a full-time job and that I was looking for something Sunday through Thursday as this is my schedule for my FT job.  When I reinterated to her that I was looking for Sunday through Thursday, she got rude with me and I haven't heard back from her!  What in the world makes these companies think we want to work EVERYDAY and not have a life!? 
What exactly are the American people going to do about this situation?
The laws are in place to protect the corporations and politicians.  The American people cannot unite in agreement of anything and politicians and corporations know this.  They placate us, pander for our votes but do not give a flying rat's a$$ about what we think in reality. 
Has anyone had a conversation with the people at Amherst about this situation. I am not sure where

to go after them to get any results. I would appreciate any recommendations you may have on this because it needs to be addressed.

I've been trying to be nice by not posting at all.  I think its rediculous that she continues to come her posting graphic details about her personal business. I would never dream of doing such a thing and I truly do not have any parents or other family to turn to.  I just work things out on my own. 
How about forgetting about other people and thinking
I started doing that years ago. We have the ability to just tune in our our headphones and tune out the garbage. Take attitudes for what they are. Here is something once I heard I always try to remember when someone in the field, either a coworker or boss, etc. is nasty: Always be kind as possible, everyone is also fighting some kind of battle.
This means we don't have to get in other people's heads and figure out why they are out to get us. Don't waste the time. Chances are whatever it is has nothing to do with us. If QA is instructional fine, take from the mistake and learn and consider that learning experience a blessing.
Conversely, besides the money which I also need to feed my family, think about that patient you are serving silently from home, and how you are in service. There is no job greater than to be in silent service to others. So, 2 things we can learn about our unique situation in this job: 1. Be thankful we can work quietly and remain quiet even through the storms of others. 2. Remain quiet while serving in a noble manner those who are at a time in their lives when they need you most, the sick and dying.
A lot of the way we are treated is drawn by the way we look at the world. Change your outlook and things will change. That of course is just my 2 cents. I am not in control of anyone else, not this business, not the other posters, not the docs, not the people in the industry alongside me. I can only sit quietly and appreciate the fact that I am an MT and that is where I should be and I enjoy that fact every single day, even for 26 years I have served thus far. Happy Thanksgiving.
I think a lot of people are fooled into thinking medical

Going to be an easy way to make a living.  I have a friend who thought she could just fall right into it, work at home to be with her new baby and make the money that I was making at the time.  It seems glamorous being able to work at home and make good money, some of us make well into 40k.  She was in school for less than 6 months, found a job immediately when she came out, but the tapes were horrible, the company was horrible, and she was constantly asking me, hour upon hour, what this word was, listen to this word for me, I can't find this word.  She was making about 8 dollars a day! Needless to say, less than two months she gave up and is now working in a grocery store again.  This was about three years ago.


So these newbies in the long run will get frustrated not having the knowledge they need in order to make the money to earn a decent living.  I remember I went to school for about a year and a half to learn this stuff.  When I got out, it was a whole new ball game.  The doctors weren't as clean and clear as on the practice tapes we did in school for three months, I had to work in house in an emergency room so there were things constantly going on around me that made the dictation even harder to understand, and I believe it was about well over two years into MT'ing before I knew "NIN gap" was in fact "anion" gap.  So these ladies have no idea what they are in for, and the only people left to do VR in a few years will be us seasoned MTs who have paid our dues already.

I have had problems with my internet service on occasion, but I am not not without service for five days though! Yikes! And good point about complaining that they might charge you for a business line in another posting here. I think I would still switch though and ask companies how long their customers are usually without service, i.e. ask how long before service is restored.

The feeling there is that if you don't know your stuff, you're OUT. I don't know how many people have come and gone, but I've been on the same team for about 5 years now, so she's doing something right in her hiring.
Hire someone to work per diem or for a weekend. NM

Or why not hire an IC to work on the account under you? You found it
and it is your reputation and bidding that sealed the account, why not ask IC's to BID on it. You might find somebody who loves derm work and wants the money. Even if you only make 1-2 cpl over your IC it adds up.
So instead of training him, you thought euthanazia would be a better idea? Tired of people thinking

Great company but like everyone else they over hire. Haven't had work since before Christmas *sm
because it is a slow time and I refuse to get up at 4:00 a.m. to beat someone else to it.  I am in the process of obtaining a second and third account and am going to start looking out for myself from now on.  I now understand why there is such a turnaround with MTs and companies - seems like the companies overhire and then the MT has to look elsewhere - they work at the new company for awhile until they find that they have now over hired and then they look elsewhere.   I have been with MDI for a few years and I plan to stay there but I am going to take on another job or even two so I do not sit idle when times are slow. 
How stressful this situation is. Why I work 10-11 hrs a day with a side job.

I have that very situation exactly, except I work a weekend every 8 weeks.

Why do these rotten companies always put the single people

who are sole support on the worst accounts, and the people with someone who contributes to the household income get the easy stuff.  They do not  care about our welfare and just think we are the captive slaves for them.

I've worked for companies that needed people
specifically to do certain reports.  I have been hired to exclusively do ERs and discharge summaries before.  It wasn't cherry picking either.  They needed someone to catch up their backlog and keep the reports within TAT permanently.  Evidently, other people were cherry picking and bypassing these report types because they're not as good of money makers as Ops or H&Ps.

Question. How many MTs sit and wait for work when companies overhire and there is not enough work
on your shift.  Is this what these companies want for people to sit around and wait on work.  As an IC, this probably doesnt amount to even close to minimum wage.  What do you do in these cases of no work and sitting waiting for practically nothing to come in when obviously lots of others are doing the same thing.  It actually almost seems as though you need to have 2 jobs to survive in this business really.  I cant image how you can get the lines in they require.  Crazy business this is.

It's a different world now of course, so I'm thinking about going back to work.
Well, you may be rusty at first but start out slow and build up speed and knowledge. You have a huge advantage I think over newbies in the field as it's there in your memory cells and all you have to do is "open the file" so to speak and build on what is already there in the hard drive. Just going on vacation makes me rusty so I can imagine that you have your work cut out for you but its still the same job and you know the drill.

If they outsource to offshore, I will not work for them. 


If they treat me like dirt, I get out. 


I see ads all the time for "experienced MTs only apply."  Then they turn around and offer you 6 or 7 cpl.  How insulting is that?  I won't work for them either. 


There are a couple of good companies out there - but not too many.  You need to be able to pick and choose in this business.  IMO only desperate people work for desperate pay and put up with the crappy services and what they dish out.  I kind of feel sorry for all the new MTs out there that have to put up with this crap just so they can get a foot in the door and try to get some experience so they can move on. 


If more of us refused to work for those lousy companies, maybe they might reconsider their business practices.  I doubt that offshore MTs are going to work for paltry wages for ever.  They are now beginning to demand more money for their services.  Let's see what happens with that.

Companies NOT to work for
Do not work for the following companies if you expect to make decent wages or if you even expect to get a paycheck without having to beg for one. Hum lets see.
Medquist, KJM Trans., SoftScript, Superior Global, Zylomed, Medvoice, A to Z trans., D&L Typing, MedWord, Spheris, California Trans., Unlimited, ... there are more but I just can not think of them right now. Mostly, you will not find anyone paying what they use to pay before "Offshore" began. So if you find someone who you are averaging at least $18/20 dollars plus an hour, KEEP IT.
Work for 3 different companies. sm
.10/65 no headers/footers, .10/65 with headers/footers, spaces, etc., 1.70 per minute with 25% extra for stat or 8.5 gross with 25% extra stat.
I did actually work for 2 companies using DQS,
and I had two separate downloads, because I think the one company was using a slightly different version of DQS. I believe, but am not 100% sure, that any companies who purchase DQS from you-know-who have a slightly modified version from you-know-who....I had 2 icons on my desktop, for company #1 and company #2, and had no problems just using each one separately.
