then felt it was being abused.  They then noticed how large the MT industry was and decided that would be where they would focus their efforts to decide whether to keep the status or do away with it.  In order to find out that information, they had to start doing audits if the "SE" box on your W2 was marked.  I hired a tax person to help me but his efforts were fruitless.  One day after faxing back and forth and writing back and forth, I got on the phone and held for almost 5 hours until I got someone in the department created for consumer complaint resolution.  I was amazed to find myself talking to someone who was intelligent!  They saw what the problem was, saw that all the documentation was in place and negated all activity by clicking a few keys on his computer.  I had owed about $2000 that year but had already paid it as it was a retroactive audit, so I was lucky with how things worked out.

I was just wondering if anyone else had problems.  I've chosen to never again have SE status so as not to have lightening strike again!

U R confusing official definition of professional with "popular" definition...sm

the official definition is those jobs like physicians, PA's, NP's, law, etc. Not something you do for a long time or what your job is. The popular definition for profession is what you do. Same thing with vocation, a official definition would hold to calling, such as clergy or nuns or missionaries... popular would say what's your job. So depends if you are looking for the popular definitions vs. the official definitions, though I will say some very ignorant people posting on the topic...

If this was on a template that you had created--sm
or if it was sent to you, you can open the template, change the view percent, save the document that way, and it should reopen in the new view percent.
Nursing has created their own shortage
by severely restricting the availability of classes for students and refusing to make the class time available in the evenings, weekends, etc.

They also created their own shortage by making so many of the jobs papershuffling jobs rather than hands on care, and many of those jobs could easily be filled by a trained technician rather than an RN.

I do not feel sorry for nurses.
Not all QA people are created equal
If you absolutely love it, you really must have an aptitude for the job. Many of the QA people were once MTs themselves and could not keep up the pace nor did they have the necessary aptitude it takes so they became QA. So you are dealing with this scenario. Think about it.
Not all jobs are created equally either.
I won't work for the big nationals. They always wind up sticking me on ESL and difficult specialties that "nobody else can do," bouncing from account to account for coverage, several pools of hundreds of dictators, can't use your Expander much because you never hear the same dictator twice, every work type, look up addresses and patient demos. It's all about what *I* can do for them, not what *I* need to earn to support my family. Forget that! Why should I work harder for a cut in pay?

With shortcuts, the important thing is that they are created with - sm
a system that is consistent, and that you can remember easily. It's generally not a good idea to try to incorporate someone else's shortcuts (though I appreciate the chance to look at them, as sometimes they can give me ideas for one's I've not yet used :-) for that reason, and these don't seem to follow a very consistent method.
I had created a huge dictionary in my expander too...sm
But I was still a butterfingers! Just lack of fine motor skills, I suppose. Couldn't have made it without my word expander.

I remember when we typed on IBM Selectric typewrites and EVERY single word had to be typed out. Geez, what a bore!
Religion is an outdated notion created centuries ago
and has no place in today's society.
Can an expander be created in Shorthand while typing the document?
Or do you have to get out of the document and make up the expansions?  When you download it from the website, do you get any instructions along with the program?  Any other info would be appreciated.
Not all 8 cents a line situations are created equal sm
I am coming off a job using Extext and going into one using ChartNet. I have used Smart Type for over a decade and for Chartnet I have to go to Instant Text. I am able to do over 200 lines an hour after about a week at the new job. I will get to 300 again in a month or so. I say again because I have not done that much in a long time.

Extext...I loved it when I first used it, but after 18 months I can't get above 170 lph and that is with echoes and normals with lots of free lines, and that includes dozens of normals and report shells I have made myself. It won't get better and that is poor pay at the 8.5 cpl base rate, but then again I always have bonuses of a couple of kinds and shift differentials...but I can't do better than 1200 lines a day with any consistency, not in 8 hours a day.

I work a job in MedRite. Like Extext, it is a Word client and rather similar. Top rate for MedRite is close to 300 lines an hour on a horrid account with 80% PLUS ESLs. It is just a faster platform.

Enter ChartNet...never used it. Had to switch to Instant Text...never used it. I have been working about 5 days on it and I can do 200 lph and only one doctor so far who throws me for a loop when I can't do that. She is not an ESL, but a slurring motor mouth who skips around and forgets what she is doing on the phone in the first place.

The Extext work has been 90% OP notes, my specialty. The others are all the basic 4, and I have to say that I went from clinic for many years to OP notes, skipping the rest in between. I have very little experience in DS, CN and H&P notes, VERY little time with those. I'd be faster with them if I had done more of them before.

Part of speed is the expander, part is the platform and part is you. It doesn't matter how great you are as a typist and how perfect your expander, if the platform isn't very good you can't make money at any line rate. If the platform is good, but you are not Expander savvy, you won't you make it either. You can, however, be like me and a poor typist with a great expander and a decent platform...and STILL make money. LOL

In MY experience, the largest problem with making more money is the expander GLOSSARY, not which program you choose. I have heard some of the craziest stories about how to use an expander while on this board...ridiculous, wonky, time wasting, counter intuitive toro pu pu!!!! If you are struggling with an expander FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME. I am happy to spend my time helping anyone who will genuinely give my methods a shot.

The IRS definition of an employee is this:
Who Is an Independent Contractor?

A general rule is that the EO, as the payer, has the right to control or direct only the result of the work done by an independent contractor, and not the means and methods of accomplishing the result.

I'd suggest you get a consultation with an attorney, and be sure to file your response with EDD.
See definition inside.

From Webster's online dictionary:

A written or oral defamatory statement or representation that conveys an unjustly unfavorable impression b (1): a statement or representation published without just cause and tending to expose another to public contempt (2): defamation of a person by written or representational means (3): the publication of blasphemous, treasonable, seditious, or obscene writings or pictures (4): the act, tort, or crime of publishing such a libel.

Based on the definition above...
I would come away from viewing that site with an unfavorable impression and unjustly so for the name of the company as well.

I think there's a good argument for libel there.
Here's the definition I found: sm
"A ball of swallowed foreign material (usually hair or food) that becomes trapped in the stomach or the intestines."

That's on Google, and that's the way context in which the dictating physicians used that term on the reports I typed for 22 years. :)
This is the definition I found, it's
grosser than yours, eeewww!
How can you mention this, just like that??? Out of the blue?

Do you suffer from 'vocal tics?'

(n.) A calculous concretion found in the intestines of certain ruminant animals (as the wild goat, the gazelle, and the Peruvian llama) formerly regarded as an unfailing antidote for poison, and a certain remedy for eruptive, pestilential, or putrid diseases. Hence: Any antidote or panacea.

You need to look up the definition of synechiae....sm
It does refer to the eye, but also refers to any adhesions in the body, lung, uterus, vulva etc.
Small national definition
Would you define what you would perceive as a "small" national, and then maybe I could better have an idea how to respond to you with some ideas.
Depends on the company's definition.
At MQ, a medical Editor is a Transcriptionist who uses ASR (automated speech recognition) to get her job done; she literally edits the speech recognition product.

The QA Specialist handles the QA blanks the MTs or MEs send.

Have you tried checking the IRS website for their definition?
If there's a standard anywhere, it should be based on that.
The definition of "US-Based"
Does NOT mean the company doesn't off-shore its work!!!! It might just mean they have offices in New York and LA where they answer the phones before shipping the work off to India or elsewhere.
MTs by definition are hired to transcribed - sm

what the doctor dictates.  We can't be expected to have to catch their mistakes - they're supposed to catch their own.  That's why they're being paid the big bucks and we're note.  Years back, we weren't expected to know all this stuff -- the meaning of every word we transcribed, the normal/abnormal lab values, what a particular drug is used for, and I could go on and on, and we were paid better, appreciated more & respected more.

I do agree that we must know how to spell medical words and words of English usage.  That's what they get for their 7-8-8.5 cents per line.  I do NOT believe that we should have to look up doctor's names, on our time, when the dictator has it right in front of him/her and would take him/her only 2-3 seconds to spell it, thus also avoiding any confusion.  But I guess that would be too easy.

I didn't always feel this way.  Years back, when I was treated as a professional and compensated accordingly, I performed as such.  If I want to flag a doc's mistake, I do it for the PATIENT'S sake (but for the grace of God it could be me or a loved one lying in that hospital bed) - and as a courtesy to the doctor.  But they really expect too much for too little.

Webipedia dictionary definition of flame is SM
(n.) A searing e-mail or newsgroup message in which the writer attacks another participant in overly harsh, and often personal, terms. Flames are an unfortunate, but inevitable, element of unmoderated conferences.
(v.) To post a flame.

My definition of hard work is totally different.

When I need a reality check on how good I got it with this at-home typing thing, I do my chores outside in the freezing cold or sweltering heat and realize that is about the only other thing I could do in this state for income, and I'd be lucky if I got minimum wage with no bennies out of it.

I guess you have to look at it from a different perspective every now and again.  I've heard of people who leave MTing at home because they miss the buzz of an office, and then the cranky patient's and office politics breaks them down and brings them back to doing their thing solo again.

For me, the pay isn't too awfully bad because I figure don't have to buy fancy clothes, I don't have to worry about a car, gas, packing/buying lunch, and putting on a happy face if I don't want to.

We all have bad days.  Those are days when you really need to take a deep breath or two and walk away for a bit.  They will get better.  If the bad days just keep on a'comin, well, then I suppose it would be time to look for a change, and there's nothing wrong with that either.

Depends on the definition you choose to accept
It can be "the particular occupation for which you are trained" or simply "a person's job or profession." I choose to think of mine as a career, also. I have not failed to increase my income each year, albeit by a relatively small amount, each year for the last seven. I think maybe the main difference between categorizing MT as a "career" or a "job" is one's contentment with where they are and what they are doing.

I googled this and found a definition of a wav. file.
WAV (or WAVE), short for Waveform audio format, is a Microsoft and IBM audio file format standard for storing an audio bitstream on PCs. ...  It is basically the format in which an audio file is saved.  There are all sorts of audio formats such as dss., wma., etc...Hope this helps!!

I went back and read the OPs post about 3 times. Not once did she use the word hate and she said "most" not "all." We've all had bad days. I was cursing under my breath while working just today because one inconsiderate mumbling Primadonna ruined my entire morning. She just happened to be American.

Face it. There is a stereotype that many doctors have God complexes, are arrogant, demanding, and have to have their way. Doctors are inconsiderate. These are intelligent people that just don't give a rats. I'll prove it by saying that I've been a medical Transcriptionist for 18 years and no other "professional" has ever belched, eaten, cursed, or urinated while on the phone with me.

You don't have to be an MT to get frustrated over the language barrier either. I've owned my last Dell computer, not because I hate Indians, but because every single time I've had to call I wind up ending the call because there is a complete communication breakdown. I would expect that if I "chose" to live in another country, but this is my home. Americans are the ones having to learn a second language because so many foreigner just wont. Just look at how many job posting there are for bilingual receptionists and secretaries. It's just not like that anywhere else but here. If I "chose" to live in Japan, Hong Kong, the Czech Republic, etc. you'd better believe I would be the one to learn "their" language. Why should they accommodate me? I'm on their soil. Why should it be any different here? No where else on the globe is it like this.

Sorry if this is long and choppy. I got distracted.

How do they define a word? Is it characters? Is it the MS Word definition
of a word? You can fit approximately 500 words on one page of typing. It's about $.055 per line, or $2.75 per page. It's up to you. It's not great, but you are a newbie. If you don't have any other offers out there, try it for a while to gain some experience.
