If local co can be trusted, then go with them, but SM

In Reply to: When buying a new computer would you use a company locally that builds new computers or go with Dell - MTPA

will probably be more expensive. Again, they can probably customize it for you.

On the other hand, I just bought a Dell.

Buy local. The local stores pay taxes to support your city and state. (SM)
Using online and catalogues does nothing to promote the local economy.  We complain about outsourcing and about the big companies gobbling up all the work so the jobs at local hospitals are gone, yet we do the same thing when we buy on ebay, catalog, and these web sites that may be located any place in the world as their primary business location.
I went local. Great local tech support, they know what I do and were able to set it up just for me
:)
local
I am in a small town in Florida and I had one set up by a local one person company, cost me about 500 and he gave me a 5 year parts and labor warranty, I had a minor problem with it, I took it to his store and was back home in an hour - didn't have to have it shipped to me, didn't have to wait for "rebates" and would do it again any time.
would the local
mental health center be able to help? (if a child psychiatrist is not affordable) Might Social Services have a referral, or a crisis hot line possibly have referral information?

I think this child probably either has been exposed to visual porn in some form or is mentally ill.

Pray for them all too.
I have a local ISP (sm)
I have a local ISP so unless you live in the State of Michigan I am afraid this won't be much help to you. :) Here is the link anyway, just in case. :)

I would take the local job. sm
what is so nice about the local job is that you have the same dictators over and over.  You can use your expander/templates/macros, etc to get really fast on a local account and work less and make more.  Good luck.  The local jobs are the best IMO.
I do both. Go local. Luv my local job. nm

Hi there! If I did a local account for a hospital, would I still need a license? I know for the state I am in I would need one if I had accounts of my own. Thank you so much!
Need to look for something local, like
a small clinic or doctor's office to get your foot in the door and get some experience. Most larger places require experience, but some only a year or so, so see what you can find locally, even if PT, and start there.
Now you know the local job market and my
home situation better than I do.  For your information, I make more working parttime at home doing MT than I would working fulltime for any of the local advertising agencies.  Plus, I don't have to travel or put my kids in daycare.   Thank you so much for your concern about my employment situation, though.  And please, get off your
I went back to local. sm
Local companies are popping back up because people are getting fed up and going back to local.

I had horrible trouble with downtime with Adelphia, so I switched. Last time I talked to Adelphia I talked to a "rep" who was obviously in India, who asked if I was enjoying the snow.

Arst uz enjozinz' snowz!

It was May!

Now I can call and say "Yo, Eric, hows it going? Having a little trouble here."

I went to wireless and I have toooooo many trees. They trimmed branches for free and they also gave me free dial up backup, just in case, so I won't lose any money.

I have had them since May and I haven't lost a dime. I've lost the wireless on occasion, but I have the dialup to back me up.

With Adelphia, I had downtime sometimes for days. Still had to pay the ridiculous bill though!!!
I like my national (PT) but my local is the best.

With my local I know exactly what I'm in for and how long it's going to take me.  With my national, I can work hard at it and do the extra or just meet the requirement.

My local has picked up a ton of accounts so I may be able to find a national that doesn't have a "schedule requirement," i.e. 3 hours 4 days a week and one weekend day.

With my local, I can say, "Hey kids, not much work, let's go get ice cream?"  They like that, but they hate "Mom's gotta burn the midnight oil."

It's a trade off. I'm not complaining.  I burned my nylons in the fireplace last October and I don't miss them!

I have one local account that does that (sm)

I've gotten used to the fact that he'll do a 2 page report on an established who is being seen for a an earache.  He has to go through all of the other medical problems, review of systems, etc., instead of just saying something like medical history is in patient's chart.

The other doctor in the same practice will just do: Chief complaint: ear pain. Examination:  Left ear is red.  Assessment:  Otitis media.  Plan:  Amoxicillin.

The hospital and the practice have tried to get him to cut his notes down, but apparently he likes to hear himself talk.

No skin off my nose, I see that I have a tape for him and I sing, "I'm in the money!"

thank you, that is great to know...how do you know it is local?
what is the best way to tell?  we have a (small) butcher shop here, but I see the trucks pull in from all over, and they even have told me their meat is just ordered from all over.

Do you from a farm?  I live in WNY, and there are plenty of dairy and cow farms, but was not sure they would sell direct...

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

I still will not eat meat, but my boyfriend does, and I have to make it every day...would feel much better if it was local...
I get it all the time. I have a local guy
who is amusing.  He addresses every report to me personally because he knows I'll be typing it.  Then he adds commentary and personal opinions.  "I don't what this yahoo was thinking.  G.D. idiot.  blah, blah  If you can figure this out, let me know."
Maybe get local accounts
I was lucky enough several years ago to hook up with a urology office that was expanding its practice. I did this at home for a long time. The pay was excellent and, of couse, only 5 doctors, so I got very used to doing them which increases your speed. Also, there was not all this looking up doctors from huge databases which really slows one down. Maybe you can check around your local city and find something like that. It doesn't hurt to try.  Good luck to you both!
Get a local acct (sm)
The middle man is making money on your work. Cut out the middle man and you'll make more than $15 an hour.
I do not see how you can get around this with local accounts.
You are always going to run across patients that you know.  That is why confidentiality is so important.  Yes, I know things about people that sometimes I wish I did not know.  However, the people who work in my physician' s office know things about me that I wish they did not know.  My physician is a client of the service I work for, so I do not see any way around it.  In my opinion, typing reports is no different that actually working in the office with the patients.  You just have to keep your mouth shut.
Buying local ....
Unfortunately, some of us don't live in areas that have a lot of choice. My town is tiny and we have a teensy WalMart that has items that (I really think this!) have been there waiting to be sold since the day it opened years ago! I buy from JC Penney's from a catalog outlet here in town (if they're open) or online, sometimes I shop in one of the larger neighboring cities. Frankly, unless I'm buying cotton or watermelon, it ain't happening here :-).

However, in defense of your statement, when I lived in a larger city and had variety (and choices!) I did shop in town more often than not. I miss those days LOL.
Try "Airborne," an OTC from your local RX.

Call your local MD!
find a medical care provider, whomever is on call for your local MD, and do what they say. Once something lke this involves the head/neck/face, it can get hairy. And if it begins affecting his airway, there's hell to pay. Find someone medical to give you advice right away. Otherwise, he could end up on the floor, and you on the fone with 9-1-1.
You have 911. There are local hospitals
with free nurse referral lines. That's just for starters.

You just take the cake for stupidity with your original question and now your silly offended replies.
Local MTSO's here
only pay 6-8 cpl.  Some will not go higher than 7 cpl to start.  I was told by the owner of the company I work for now that she has had to cut some of her charges in order to get new accounts.
According the local people here I don't need one - sm
that is good enough for me. Rather not spend the money if I don't have to. I am sure if they were wrong, I will be hearing from them again. Thanks for the heads-up though. Are you in a city or a rural area (I am rural, King William County).
Local accounts

Contact local doctors so that they know you are available either by flyer, brochure or cold calls.   You cannot find a local account unless you contact potential clients.

My local vet went to Spain for
30 days, and it only cost her $11,000.  This covered air fare, all hospital and doctor bills, followups over there, the residence, everything.  She has lost weight and is happy she did it.  She said her medical insurance would not pay and she could not afford to have it done here.  Evidently this hospital does this for a lot of foreigners.  I live by the Canadian border and the folks here have always gone up to Canada for dentistry and to get prescriptions filled because it is so much cheaper.  Also for laser eye surgery.  My hubby needs dentures and is going to Canada to get them because it is so much cheaper.  Medical care in this country is very expensive.
local business

Look in your yellow pages for companies that re-cycle as they will stand behind their cartridges -- at least in Portland they do.  I have a large laser HP and my toners cost me over $100 at Office Depot even their re-cycled one.  But several local companies offer for about $75 to $85 and they deliver and last just as long.  I do a lot of printing and so go through about 3 per year at 10,000 copies per toner.  Seems sometimes it is cheaper to buy a new printer.

You may be able to file at the local...
magistrate's office (I believe in the employer's area) if it is under a certain amount. Most have to be under $5,000, some less, some a little more. This would save attorney fees. Just depends on how much you are owed.
MT - Local Company
Sorry, I wish they were. It's a small local company in the town where I live. They won't hire anyone else unforunately. She's trying to save money.
Google in the name of your local
hospital.
local physicians

I was wondering if any one knows if local physicians would rather hire certified MT to do their work from home.  I am thinking about supplementing my income with a national and wondering if this would be a good way to go.  Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated!!

local jobs
someone mentioned that younger docs like the electronic way of sending the transcripts.  I have 9 years experience as a MT but this is all new to me if I was to do this with local docs.  Is there a way to have them sent to you electronically or would they all be a pick up a tape and deliver process?  If it is a tape is there a better device than another to do this?  Thanks to all in advance.
How does one get local accounts?
I would like to know how one gets local accounts or how does one make $4500 per month?

If you have other local acounts,
let those doctors know you are looking to expand. They may know colleagues looking for help, or may hear of something and think of you. Good luck.
These are not local clients.
They are nationwide clients. I provide digital dictation access.

I also have QA contractors that are included in my overhead costs as much as the MTs.

Is there a local cafe?

In Dear Abby, a waitress recently wrote she sees a lot of friendships made between the people that eat breakfast at the same diner each morning.

Are there any book clubs?  Oh, could you volunteer at the Humane Society or take classes at the local Red Cross.  Is there a book club?

Do you sew?  You could volunteer to make baby blankets for Project Linus (was this on GMA or the Today show?)   All these type of things take a little effort, but would put you in contact with people that may have similar interests.

I only mentioned the above as ideas (because these are the ones that most interest me).  I'm sure you could come up with a list that is suited towards your own interests.  Good luck with your quest.  Meeting new people has always been hard for me because I am excruciatingly shy and my interests are a little different from moms my own age.

We could use local newspapers? TV?
I just noticed that my local newspaper has an "opinion poll" section. I wonder if we could write to them and have them do the polling for us? Maybe along with a little story?
Local Clinics
I would seriously try to find work at a local clinic if you're finding it hard to get hired with a National. I also went to a local community college. I didn't take me long to find a very small local MTSO to hire me, thank God they decided to take a chance on me. I now work for a local nephrology clinic. I definitely know though that if I tried to go out on my own, there would be no way I could have done it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
local newspaper
I just sent an article to my local newspaper asking them to use some of the things from this posting to hopefully make people aware of their personal info possibly being sent to India.  It may be a small step, but like Lillybelle said, if we could get this started, maybe we can make a change.
local hospital
I work for a local hospital that have all transcriptionists at home except for radiology. I have been working from home with them for about 8 years now. We are hourly employees and clock in and out on computer. We also have an incentive program (which used to be good, but they changed transcription platforms and it's not that good anymore), but it's better than having to drive into the hospital every day. I love it!
local hospital
I worked for local hospital for 11 years, then they decided to go to ASR and the Q took over their account! Seems like most hospitals are finding it more cost-effective to send it to large company with ASR!
no, but try to get more local accts....sm
makes one a whole less dependent than the companies using DQscribe (but again I do like the DQScribe program but would NEVER choose it for my private local accounts).  My local accounts still like the personal touch, still dictating into dictaphones, and they just like it this way.....they are not all that interested in getting more techy and they are all 35-48 in age............
Local MT account

Has anyone ever tried sending a resume to local doctors to get some accounts of their own? If so how well did this work?

Thanks

Angie

getting your own local accounts
I picked up one 9 years ago that way, but we called about 100 doctors and faxed my resume, but that was in 1998 and yes, I am still with them.  They have expanded and opened another office, but I do also.  Then another way is to post your resume on MTStars, that was very effective for me by picking up a major account and I am still doing their work and they have 3 offices.
I have two local accounts and I
tell them to mail the tapes to my house.... I used to pick up but no more... they were never ready..
Try local clinics
Or if you have a small local MTSO, they may be willing to give you a chance. That's how I started. I trained with the MTSO at her office for a couple of weeks and then I started working from home for a local nephrology group and I've been there for the past five years. Try not to get discouraged, although I know that's a hard thing to do.
I had a local hospital do the same s/m

even after explaining to them what E&O really meant.  Their previous transcription company had E&O, but that was because they had to have it for their copying services as well and the transcription just fell under it.  I found that Farmers carries it, but it was around $1,500 for a year.  They did have payment plans though too.

Best of luck!

try local school...

Is there a school nearby that offers a transcription course? Students who are either done with their program or dropped out always seem to want to sell their stuff for cheap since they sometimes can't sell their books/CDs back to the bookstore. In my experience there is usually a board somewhere on campus where students can post stuff.

Also, you can use the school to find out what books they are using in the program (check out the bookstore) and then buy it cheap off of Amazon.com. Hope this helps.

No local clients to be had here
I figured contracting with a larger National would establish my business.
So did I!!! I left a local hospital
because I thought I could make more money working for the nationals.  Ugh, I threw away a good thing.  I tried to go back, but they said I'd have to start all over at the bottom working night shift again.  Not gonna happen.  Well, chin up, things will get better.
