If there is a company out there that let's you type on a blank page, I haven't found it. I

I am a good MT. However, I haven't found what I need from a company yet.
I agree that not every MT or company will be a good fit for each other.  I just didn't realize that what I was asking for from an employer would be nearly impossible to find.  It's not that I'm not willing to give a little either; it seems like the majority of companies that I have come across want you chained to your desk 24/7 with a ring through your nose to tug on.  They won't pay downtime but they expect you to check back into the system every 15 minutes without pay.  Some people do this without complaining because they feel lucky to have a job working at home.  I'm sorry, but I'm not a doormat.  We already pay the overhead and equipment costs for the companies.  Our benefits and line rates get cut back more and more.  The quality of dictation gets worse and worse because of VR and offshoring.  I'm a good MT, and I deserve to be treated like one.  If standing up for myself means I have a bad attitude, oh well, at least I can sleep at night for not letting anybody walk all over me.
How hard is it to type a word in a blank space? I'm afraid
.
I haven't found them
What I've seen ranges from 2.5 cpl to 15 per hour.
Haven't you found though

that what feels good short-term (shoes, chairs, foundation garments, etc.)  gets uncomfortable long-term?  I've sure been fooled by something I tried on, sat on, even walked a few feet in, only to find that it just did not work out.

My current chair, for instance, felt extremely cushy when I tried it in the store, and for a while afterward at home.  Then the seat seemed to lose its 'cush'.  I think the type of intensive 'extreme' sitting we MTs do is the real test of a chair.  Maybe we all should get jobs as chair testers with Consumer Report?

I haven't found the need to have a backup sm
phone line connection. My cable is Insight and very seldom have a problem. They usually do their ugrades during the midnight hours, which posed a problem when I worked nights. We seldom have any outages and if we do, it is usually resolved in a couple of hours or so. For what I pay, I think I get pretty good service and don't want to cough up any more money for another connection unless I had a second job that required it.
Bono, still haven't found what you're looking for?
Just couldn't resist that one.
I'm happy there. Haven't found anyone to be rude...sm

I think the office/tech staff is exceptionally nice.   ');>  All I care really is that my work is steady, I get a great cpl rate, I've never missed a paycheck or had a late paycheck in my 2+ years there, and on the occasional times that my work has run out I could be switched to another work pool for more work.  And the benefits are great, but only for full-timers (no bennies for part time MTs).

If you have any specific questions, let me know and I'll try to answer them.

By the way, I *think* TransHealth is hiring right now.

For transcription, I haven't found that the quality of the sm
speakers is an issue at all. it is the quality of the headphones that matters, unless you don't use headphones?
Difficult to find, haven't found one yet (sm)
but I keep looking
Not Silent Type! Less than $1.75/page and you go to NJ to train. nm
s
Welcome to my world...I would type a whole page and ended up with 35 lines max. No thanks.
I had to bag it. I couldnt afford to do that. I was averaging $6 an hour. I can make more at McDonalds. So there is obviously a problem.
Look under company board - maybe page 2 by now.
Lots of posts and lots negative as usual.
Check out the Company board, halfway down the page. nm

Great company but like everyone else they over hire. Haven't had work since before Christmas *sm
because it is a slow time and I refuse to get up at 4:00 a.m. to beat someone else to it.  I am in the process of obtaining a second and third account and am going to start looking out for myself from now on.  I now understand why there is such a turnaround with MTs and companies - seems like the companies overhire and then the MT has to look elsewhere - they work at the new company for awhile until they find that they have now over hired and then they look elsewhere.   I have been with MDI for a few years and I plan to stay there but I am going to take on another job or even two so I do not sit idle when times are slow.
Did you look at the company board? Just scroll down the page for posts from yesterday and today!

Just found out that my company is offshoring

However, it is still hush-hush, and evidently people aren't talking.  It is a company that has prided itself on never offshoring, and I think employees would be totally shocked if they knew.   Is it true that this board does not allow these companies to advertise here, and if so, what is "proof?"

That happened to me and I quit and found another company. sm
The name of the game is money. If I can't make any money, I will find a company where I can.

Just started working as an IC for a company, found out something I had been transcribing for
years was wrong. When I questioned it, they explained it to me, but for 20+ yearse no one else had seemed to care. You learn something every day in this business.
Does the company you type for know what happened?

Maybe they have something else you could do for a couple of weeks...QA, proofread, maybe a special project they have had on the back burner?  It would be worth a try to ask.  Good luck to you.

the least minimum requined lines/hour I found for a company
nm
Silent Type is not a bad company to work for but

Depending on how many pages you type determines what your page rate is and everyone gets paid the same because of it. Obviously, like with any other company the more you produce, the more money you will make.  Bi-annual bonuses, again based on your production.  Starts at 40 page per day min (which is supposed to be 1000 lines) is $1.50.  I think it does to 1.80 per page somewhere around 80 pages per day.

Not sure about the benefits (health insurance).  You get paid every other week. Not a very large company, maybe 400 or less TLs.

If you like working for a friendly, family atmosphere, check it out.

If a company has you type on straight Word..
is there any way to put your own Expander software with that and if so, what is recommended.  I have always had the company supply the software including expanders, but wondered if there is a way to use these in Microsoft Word.  Thanks for any help!!!
Is Keystrokes a good company for any work type other than radiology? sm

I have seen really good reports on this board (and others) about Keystrokes being the place to be for radiology but have really not seen much discussion regarding other work types.  I am primarily interested in op notes as I understand they will only hire if you have spent the last several years in a particular work type and ops are it for me.  I wonder about their platform, pay scale, flexibility, whether or not weekend work is required, etc.  I have left my email address in case anyone would like to privately email me.  I would really appreciate some input.  Thank you.

Personal page/web page resource
Paula,

Thanks a lot for sharing these great websites!
Oh, I found it really creepy when you said you found the flowers not so skillfully arranged on your
steps, and from your own flower bed.  That's what I was worried about, having gone thru some psycho kids myself with my pups.  Someone's been in your yard and in your garden and at your door without your knowledge.  Its just creepy to me, and I'd still be very, very careful.  Especially valid sounded the other MTs warning you about potential fake molestation charges.  You just NEVER know nowadays, and these people have already turned on you big time once. Luckily (though I don't believe in luck), you had it on film to save yourself and your puppy.  You might not be that lucky next time, and the whole thing just sounds very unstable to me right now.  I know you feel sorry for the little girl, but probably the only time I have ever made BAD decisions regarding my life is when I felt sorry for someone, particularly kids.  My son even has an evil kid in his life, but one who has a million reasons for sympathy, and I was saying how we should "be bigger" than the situation and invite this kid over to play.  Thankfully, I regained my sanity long enough to remember - ever time I have done something like that on a personal basis for someone just because I feel sorry for them AFTER horrible behavior, it has always been a disaster... Be kind, but you don't have to risk your family again. Be kind from a distance.  Its sorry she went thru this horrible experience, but YOU didn't cause it, and its not really your problem.  But it could be your problem if this kid acts out in your life.  Know what I mean?
Yep, $2.00 a page and the page has about 30-40 lines on it nm
>
NJ $3 page, though I have heard as low as $1 page.

When I worked for a national, up thru 2 years ago, I was getting $1.75 page and heard they got $4.

I think I found it, found multiple recipes with the same
exact ingredients so I figure this must be it.
don't type double spaces. Type single. Then no one will be cheated.

to blank or not blank
I've taken tests like that before, and, yes, they seem impossible but point is to stick it out and put all the blanks that are needed because that is the point, to see if you will blank it or guess something st*pid.  They know what the dictation is like.  I recently took a test where one voice file was horrendous.  I had a ton of blanks but I got the job.  The other 3 files I still had blanks too.  Then again, on the flip side, I've tested for places that had tests like that too and were indicative of their regular dictation, so you had to just test it out and see for yourself because you might be pleasantly surprised that it's not so bad.
I can type with wine, can't type with coffee, though...too jittery.
x
That is, type the code above before and after what you want bolded in the text-to-type box. nm
nm
Personally, I would blank it. You should
the spelling and for other reasons, i.e. privacy, I think it would be a good idea. Some tests I've taken have asked me to put in three underscores __ __ __ when items bleeped for confidentiality. Even if not asked to, I think that's the way to go IMHO ...
Since you had a bad ESL did you blank or put what it sounded like?
x
Blank emails-me, too

I have always used Spybot and Adware SE, but read they sometimes miss things, so I just bought NoAdWare. Was I surprized at the stuff it found compared to the other ones (including Norton AntiVirus, and my server software)!  I had 4 "dangerous" and 92 "severe" the very first day...that have been on my system for quite a while.

Since then, I have also been receiving blank emails. I'm now up to 5 every time I receive my mail. I've been getting a lot of junk mail all of a sudden and have no idea why. My favorites are winning the lotteries. If I believed them, I would have a bankroll of well over $100,000,000,000. The other ones where I am named in someone's will. Love it. Dream on.

Don't know what to say or what else to do about it without changing my email addess again, and I sure don't feel like doing that. I just did change it 3 months ago.

In my experience, if you don't know for sure, blank it. sm

It doesn't happen to often with my line of work as I only do clinic notes.  I do know which drugs are used for what and  the differences between similar sounding drugs. I have reference materials to help if I don't quite understand the pronounciation, as long as I have been given a particular diagnosis for which the drug is used.

If I am completely unsure (i.e. med list for PMH with no given symptoms or diagnosis) I ask or leave a QA note.  That is much safer than putting the wrong med in the patient's record and that is the extent of what MT's should be expected to do.

As far as the doctor dictating the wrong side of the body for any reason whatsoever, there is no way an MT could possibly determine in a case of it being left rather than right.  In the event of a dictator switching between left and right, that is a red flag to leave a note that simply says, "dicatator is indicating left and then right but does not clarify by end of note."

When my son had his mastoidectomy a year ago, the surgeon came in and drew a big blue circle around his left ear and looked at me and said, "This is the ear that I am operating on. This is his left ear.  Are you in agreement with me that I have the correct ear that needs surgery?"  Well, I kind of chuckled a little bit as my son looked rather strange at the moment and the doc said,  very nicely:  "In all seriousness, we are human and we do make mistakes, but I don't wish to make a mistake with your little boy."

No Blank Accounts sm

I heard about this but it sounds kinda strange.  Anyone ever run into this kind of account?  How do you not leave blanks if you don't know what they are saying?

What about when you leave a blank
and then QA goes in and "guesses" and fills in the blank? I have relistened after QA, and it absolutely sometimes is not what was said, it's just what the dictator "usually says" so QA puts that in. That makes me look dumb for putting so many blanks, and QA look good for knowing the answers.
blank lines also
When I started my surgical/oncology account 6 years ago, the gal that had been doing it charged for blanks, from first line to the last line on letters, consults, etc. All blanks were counted so I just continued, the OM, docs are well aware of it.  Also, that is why my cpl is lower than others also, it usually averages out in the wash.
Screen blank for me too.
nm
Take out all blank lines
Go through and take out all blank lines and count or put on your line count on your file and see how many blanks there are and subtract.  Remember if you have a header though on pg 2 and 3, it does not count those lines.  Also I think that Sylcount will count lines only and no blanks.  Also when doing your line count in MS word, it gives you the paragraphs and so if it is 20, subtract 20 lines,  date to address is 4,  address to RE is 2,  RE to salutation is 2, etc.  Usually there are ten blanks from date to Dear.    Good luck.
Leave a blank
Definitely an error on the MD's part
Always flag/blank something so odd it is likely

Mine will go to QA if I have a blank.....sm
I do sometimes put that in though.
oh, the dreaded blank

I always do much better filling in the blanks if I don't stress too much over it, finish the report, and go back and listen again after the report is finished.  So often the blank can be figured out with the context of the rest of the report available.

right click anywhere on your desktop that is blank, sm
and go into properties; click on the last tab that says settings and on the bottom left-hand corner is screen resolution. slide that bar left and right until you see what you are used to. FYI mine is on 800x600 pixels.
Either blank it or sound it out--no big deal either way.
Good luck!
