Hang on tight.
There will stil be lots of rocky hills to make it over, but you will be happier once you are over them. I will be praying for you and your kids!
Hang tight and don't give up!
You should have read the first few mammograms I typed. Wish I would have saved them for a good laugh now! It does get better and then one day you will be typing it before the doc says it. You might also think one day how boring it is to type the same thing over and over. I went through that about the 7th year, kind of like a marriage, really! :)
I learned to put my phones in front of my ears inbetween dictations so I don't get blasted.

In a pinch I have played the cassette in front of my computer mic and recorded using the sound playe
Mine is located by going to the start menu, to accessories, to games, to sound recorder. As long as it is quiet in the room, the sound quality is excellent.
Honestly, you're doing well for a newbie. Hang on to
The way this industry is going, if you can't do acute care, and be able to edit it, you might be in trouble down the road both in terms of job security and the amount of money you can make.  You will be suprised how quickly your line count grows when you get used to the formatting, doctors' names, get your glossary and standards built up a little, and get into the rhythm of things.  Keep studying terminology on your own time--especially for ops.  Be flexible about accepting a couple of different accounts to keep you busy and your knowledge base growing.  You want to try to build up your speed with small goals, but not at the expense of quality; the speed will grow on its own if you have the terminology down pat and you use your production tools wisely. The first six months is the hardest, but hang in there.
I must say that you do indeed sound like you're one of the 'good guys'...

From MT to QA, thank you for all of the good work that you do.  Know that you are appreciated.  When you send one of us constructive feedback that enables us to continue to train our ear it makes us a better MT and motivates us to try even harder the next time.

We need more of your kind in this industry.  It's QA's like you who create a better environment for growth and preserving the integrity of the patient document.

Thank you again.

you sound just as bitter and defensive, so we're square. nm

You're welcome. I am just so sick and tired of factless sound bites

Try the front jack on the front of the CPU if it has one- or on the
it if is not pushed in all the way, sound will only be in one ear.
Tight calves?
Anyone have really tight calves from using your foot pedal? I know I should alternate feet more but I prefer a certain side. I also noticed that if I get down on my knees with my lower legs tucked under me, I can't sit comfortably because my calves are so big and tight. I had a massage the other day for the first time in a while and the massage therapist asked if I ran, said I had tight thighs. I'm just concerned I'm going to get bad circulation or something - I already feel a little wobbly when I walk first thing in the morning. Is this a normal side effect of the job and nothing to worry about?
yeh, we have to have a tight grip on our social graces

We'll start walking around wanting to backhand everyone who looks at us sideways.

Hug your kids extra tight tonight. (sm)
It will make you feel better, but he will DEFINITELY need it. Be prepared for it to take a few days to really affect him. I went thru something like this last year with my 12yo. There was a bomb at her school. She was OK until 2 days later, and then she just totally lost it. She said, "oh my God, Mom, we all could have just been gone."
Yes. My legs would get so tight and my feet and ankles

swell horribly.  I have to loosen the shoestrings on my tennis shoes to get them on, but if I'm up moving around the swelling goes down and then I have to tighten the strings.   As someone else said cut back on salt - I use salt substitute but it still isn't good in large amounts, and move around a few minutes every couple of hours.

This is not abnormal and does come from sitting so much and I've known lots of MTs with the same issue.

On this tight budget, I do not have cable. What is the latest on Katrina?
The message boards have disintegrated into name calling and absurdity.  My local stations are not running any news.  What is going on down in New Orleans?  It is 5:41 PST here and I have just read on a message board they are predicting 10,000 deaths?  Surely this is not so
radiologists and radiology services are very very tight with money - sm
You always have to keep an eye open for who is hiring and who is looking to switch to another service. I for one, have managed to get the work I had by just letting radiology offices know who I was and where I lived. My reputation spoke volumes and references even more. However, there will always be that one person or company that will undercut your rate just to get the work. But keep in mind, depending on the radiology office or radiologist, they may keep crap work just to save $$. Others will not, and eventually I always get called back.

You cannot expect people to just hand over their paycheck to you and say, "yeah, here is who I'm working for. Call them up." Would you want someone cutting into your paycheck? I know I wouldn't. Take the work while it is there. Feast or famine. And always keep YOUR OWN eyes open for business.
I get that if I wear tight-fitting jeans or shorts and....
sit for a long time. I haven't had that problem since I switched to baggy pants or scrubs while working. Good luck.
I do love those younger gals though, the always pudgy ones in hip riders and too too tight tops.
so attractive with the roll hanging out.
VERY hard to get - a few companies have rad tied up pretty tight. The hospital I work for sm
will not even look at a new company for radiology. The TAT is too tight, the IS issues complex, and the radiologists do not want to have to proof their reports. You would be better off with medical records or small offices to start to build your size and reputation.

I'm all ears
I am totally frustrated myself and so ready for a change. Trust me, I can relate.
Protect ears where you can
I recently bought a new blow dryer that is louder than my old one. I have started putting cotton in my ears while blow drying, and it muffles the high, painful whine. I suddenly have more patience with styling my hair, so I guess it may have been bothering me before this, too, and I didn't realize why I could hardly wait to finish.
definitely UNFAIR. You are our 2nd set of ears and still MTs. NM
.
OMG - My ears are always itchy - I actually
have an "ear itcher" that I keep on my desk - kinda gross, but what can ya do. I thought it was just me. I don't think I could go without them though, I work too much and my ears get sore. I guess I'll try Radioshack and Staples, if not, I guess I'll get them online. Thanks
You could use headphones that go over the ears
over your hearing aids, such as the noise-canceling headphones. I would assume this would work just fine. I don't like to wear my noise-canceling headphones because they get too hot, however.
My aching ears

Hi everyone!  Just wondering if you all have suggestions for inexpensive headphones that don't hurt your ears, but have good sound quality.  I have 2 different ones that I use and I prefer the sound quality of my little "bud" type, but they end up really hurting my ears after several hours of use.  The other are much more comfortable, but I lose sound quality.  I guess I'm looking for the best of both worlds -- oh, and inexpensively, too!!   (I don't ask for much, huh?)

Take care all!

and most of them have cellphones stuck in their ears. nm

Unfortunately, it will fall on deaf ears.
But give it a shot.

Sorry no wonder you are so down on being a Transcriptionist as it is evident you have problems spelling.
magots in the groin and ears....

Ears now beat red and they are off for good.

My ears are not beat red and killing me.  I love the NC and they help quite ambient noise even with the feature off but wowzers.  Back to my cheapos for me.  I may try the Koss headphones and see if they are any better.  Hubby is not working so he gets to do all the running. He is going to kill me.

I have real hearing loss (30%) in both ears and
was recommended to get 2 hearing aids, but did you ever price those things? 1200 for one? So I got one. I barely use it. I can't use it for work as it isn't small enough to accomodate the headphones. But since I got on DEP, the only good thing about it is the voice comes through the speaker right into my headset so I actually have to turn it DOWN. I was evaluated and wanted to hear so bad that it was work related but they say mine is congenital, and with a little digging into my family's history I realize that it is. I do know plenty of MTs, however, who do have credible hearing loss with no other factors. I mean, come on, how could you not? The secret is to keep the volume as LOW as you can stand it to try and avoid any loss. I also have terrible ringing and think that is job related.
My daughter is 17 and has never wanted her ears pierced!
She has always been involved in sports and would have to take them out during a game or put a band-aid over them. I wanted that to be something she wanted, and she has never wanted her ears pierced. For prom we bought clip-ons and they looked pretty nice. I was afriad they would be tacky. She might want to get them pierced before next prom but, again, that will be HER decision.

snot suckers, in our ears, like they don't know we hear that

Harder on my eyes than my ears but I find it hard to

believe that listening to dictation could cause hearing loss.  Blasting music through headphones maybe, but not dictation.  I've been doing this for 20 years and have not noticed any difference in my hearing.

However, my eyes get soooooo tired.  I've started zooming in to make the print look bigger and that helps a lot.

Once a week, I clean my headset ears with alcohol.
Then swab out my ears after showering with Q-tips with alcohol on them. Keeps the itching down to nothing, and the ear wax doesn't build up that way, either.
Ears itch b/c of ear sponge bacteria (mine did)

Take off the sponges and clean the actual headset with rubbing alcohol damply applied to a towel, then replace the sponges.  Do this periodically.  Also, replace the sponges every month or so, especially in hot weather.

I have a pair of the earbuds (cheap ones) and they hurt my ears.
I couldn't wear them very long.
My ears are feeling so horrible that I can't stand the feel of my headphones.
I have URI symptoms, saw the doc yesterday.  Has anyone ever not used their headphones and used the speaker instead.  I'm concerned that I won't be as accurate.  Any suggestions for me?  Thanks.
Actually it's years to ears. I can spell just fine, just don't take the time to proofread eve
post as I'm busy transcribing at the same time.  Sorry to say my priorities are such that you guys here don't rank perfect posts.  Now, if you guys want to pay per post....

I have drainage too and a ton of ear wax! YUK! I lavage my ears with a bulb syringe and warm saline

about once a month or they will start to itch something fierce.  Nobody tells you about the ear hazards of being an MT, do they?  I also have to deal with recurrent bouts of labrynthitis which my doc has said may be a side effect of ear phones in my ears all day long!

We should get hazard pay or worker's comp!

I notice sometimes the dictation goes directly from ears-to-hands. Bypasses the brain entirely! n/

don't hang it up..
It will take some time. I hope you are wearing head gear. I have had a few nasty falls, but always get back in the saddle again except for one time, hit my head hard and saw stars. They tried to get me back on the horse, but I couldn't even see it. They thought I was scared. The problem is, that if you are scared, your horse will smell it and get a little rowdy. If you can, ride with someone else for awhile, switch horses if you have another one. But hang in there, too much fun to give up. I'd give up driving before giving up riding.
Hang in there...
That is unless you directly had reason for concern. Just because they are investigating doesn't mean that they are actually going to find anything and sometimes it is only one disgruntled former employee that causes a lot of trouble for a company. Sometimes the company can end up getting a fine, changing a policy or absolutely nothing being done from an investigation. I was in middle managment for many years an the hospital I worked for got investigated a couple of times and nothing ever came from it.
Hang in there
Are you otherwise satisfied with your job? Would they fill the position if they were able to find someone? Maybe they could advertise for a part-time night person, and all the MTs could try to get the word out. Some people may be waiting in the wings for a chance at a hospital job and might take a night job, especially if they are looking for part-time.
they better hang onto you!

With my new acct, I go 2x per week (about 30 miles Roundtrip) and I HATE it when they call me to come in for a third day.  I would not worry about losing that acct, you're spoiling them

Best of luck with the printer!

Hang in there....
When I had a hysterectomy at age 39, my doctor told me that it would be 6 weeks before I would be able to do what I did before my hysterectomy; however, it would be 3 months before I really "felt" like doing everything that I did before. Amazingly, it was almost 3 months to the day when I was cleaning house and I realized that I felt GOOD.

I have been on Premarin since then - I was given my first pill in the hospital as soon as I could take po medication. With all the talk about HRT, I have decreased the dosage several times over the years.

Don't look back. Look forward to feeling better. I did not have a hysterectomy by choice, but have never regretted it since then.

You'll feel better soon.
Hang in there...
I went through fertility treatment as well with Clomid and IUI. The first pregnancy was a miscarriage, but the second I had TWINS! They are 17 months old now (girls, fraternal). Hang in there....It WILL happen!!
Hang in there
It sounds like we are in the same boat.  Is this your first pregnancy?  The other MTs have been giving some great advice.  I think the best thing for me would be to split my shifts.  I only need to work 6 hours, which is full-time for my 2100 line count.  I am thinking of probably splitting it into three 2-hour shifts and see how that will work out.  My only problem with that is not wanting to come back to work after I complete four hours.  I will just have to push my self to do the last two hours.  My husband is very understanding.  But he always asks me what my line count was for that day and will even cook dinner and help out with the kids if I have to work at night.  I will keep you posted if you would like to chat sometimes.  Send me an e-mail.
hang in there
i make 10 cpl.  there are companies out there that will pay that IC.  you need to get some more experience under your belt.  i have been doing this 8 years now.  your speed needs to pick up a little also and it will.  just hang in there.
Hang in there!

I know what you are saying about working at home with kids.  My youngest were 2 and 3 when I started working at home and it has been a rough couple of years, but now they are 6 and 7 and both in school (the youngest 3 days a week).  I can do about 1000 lines in 4 to 5 hours depending on the type of work I get.  When your son is older, he isn't going to care if your production is was a little less.  He is going to remember that you were there with him and did the best you could.  So be proud of yourself and hang in there... It does get better.  We are all just doing the our very best to be good mothers and housekeepers and transcriptionists and wives (gee, I am tired )... So keep your chin up!
