If you are typing in Word or WP, every character will be counted.

If you are being paid by keystroke, that would be different, like the other poster said.

I once worked for a company that paid per 1,000 characters.

My beginning rate was $1.25/1,000 characters (0.00125/character) which was the same as 0.08/line.

I was gradually raised to $1.85/1,000 characters(0.00185/character)which was the same as 0.12/line.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

I thought Word counted blank lines using this method. I think the OP is looking for Abacus. nm

6 character counts as a word
What would that calculate to be? Thanks for your help. I do not know many companies that pay by the word. I guess I will just have to see what my first pay check looks like. Thanks!
Courier 10 in Word is a 72 character line.
I was offered a position for the same as you mentioned and declined. I found a position that pays 10 cents a gross line with Courier 12, 65 character line.

You do need to remember, a line is a line when paid by gross line. So, if you initials are the only characters on a line, you are paid for that full line.

In Word, take the character count (with spaces) divided by 65... SM
that will give you an accurate line count, but you'll have to write the character count down for each and every report before you finish and send the report.  I put a button on my tool bar that I just clicked to bring up the document counts and then I just kept a log that wrote down job number and character count for each report.  Then at the end of the day just add up the characters divide by 65 and you've got your line count for the day.  Kind of a hassle, but worth it in the long run.
Help please...typing in Word, hooked up my

C-phone and plugged in my foot pedal.  Got the message from computer that foot pedal was detected, but it doesn't control the dictation at all.  I haven't used a C-phone in years, and I've never actually set one up.  Dictation will work using commands on the C-phone but my foot pedal doesn't work.  Is there something I need to do to hook it up to the C-phone?  I've been searching for an answer, and I'll keep looking, but I was really hoping someone on here would know.  I'd appreciate any and all help please:-)

I wouldn't like that either. So, you're not typing in Word? sm
If not typing in Word, I wonder if you could copy/paste your work into a Word document to keep track of your line count.

If you can do that, make sure you have your line count set up to do it the same way they do....including lines, spaces, etc.

Yes, it does. My hosp is typing in MOX, we lost Word many years ago due to cost.
Good luck!
65 character line versus gross lines versus pay by word

I am checking into other options for transcription.  Can anyone tell me how to compare all of these types of lines & also payment per word?  I know companies use different scales, so I wondered how they compare.  I have been paid on a 65 character line with spaces, but I may be making a change in the future - don't want to get burned.

Thank you in advance!

Quick question! Is 10 cpl with benefits at 74 character line better than 9 cpl at 65 character line?
Thanks
How errors are counted
Unfortunately, there isn't a universal way of counting errors to quote a per cent accuracy. Basically, where I work, 98% accuracy would mean there were 2 noncritical word error in 100 lines (not characters).

When you hear quotes of alleged 95% accuracy in speech recognition, it probably means 5 errors in 100 characters, not lines.

Again, with offshore companies claiming 98% accuracy, who knows how they are counting?

But you are right, we all make errors, and I have seen stupid ones in my own reports that I would have felt bad if I hadn't caught them. I am sure doctors sometimes get laughs out of our bloopers the same way we get laughs out of theirs.

IC - 8-10 cpl but line is counted

The main factor really with IC work is the flexibility.  So many companies offer IC positions, but they want you to work certain hours - wrong, wrong, wrong!  JMO.  It is so funny because I sit and think, "wow", "I can work online and not have to go anywhere", but it sure is nice to go old-school once in a while and throw a tape in the old microtranscriber and type away making $$$ out the ying-yang.

The original poster got me, and that's what counted!
Sorry to disappoint, but she got my point!
How about counted cross stitch
I've been doing it since I was 16-17 yrs old and it is the one thing I constantly go back to after doing anything else crafty.... just so relaxing
Don't overuse but have to blank and counted off for it?
Right now am really bumfuzzled as I do not know in my MTing career if this has happened before. I was just told from a company where I have worked for some time that blanks are counted off. I do not just leave to be leaving, absolutely cannot make out and really taken aback to be truthful. Do most places do this to their MTs? Is this just another way to make their pockets fuller?
MQ not paying for spaces -- just manually counted and it don't add up

anyone know?  Just went from straight line count to DQS...

used to type 500 lph, now barely 150 lph....

AND NO COUNT FOR SPACES....

DAMMIT, THAT'S A KEY STROKE

Gross lines are not counted in characters.
A gross line = any number of characters on a line counts as a complete line. The actual number of characters per line will vary.
Really? I never save mine in .rft, only .doc, & they are counted just fine.
nm
line counts are counted within the report
and depend on how it is set up. They can vary the line lengths and also whether or not it counts blank lines. There is no spellchecker. I think the most important thing to learn is whether or not you sign on through a Citrix server. In that case, you will more than likely get lag, which will kill your radiology line count.
Well, counted my lines for first hour and I made
602 at 4 cents = $24.00 for the hour. Not bad, huh?
It doesn't sound right to me. That one MINOR error should only be counted
as 1/2 point because it's not critical to patient care.
If they have access to how the lines are counted on the back end - see inside
They can go in and maybe make changes to what their counts actually were.  Anything is possible.  It does sound fishy to me.  I would go to your supervisor and ask in such a way as could the other girls possibly show you any tricks they are using that might benefit all of you and open up communication that way.  That way you are not accusing anyone of anything.  Worth a try.
Not included. Demos and ccs are headers/footers. Not counted. nm

post thumbs down votes aren't being counted
If you've tried to vote thumbs down on the two posts by computerboy advertising illegal downloads of Stedman's items, you'll be interested to know that the forum is instead counting them as "thumbs up" votes.
I have a gender problem when I type! Seems everytime I get my QA eval I always get counted off

because I've typed he instead of she or his instead of her.  It drives me crazy!  I always pass with at least a 98%, but I'm always making this mistake and I feel like an dunce every time I see it on paper!

I know how it happens.  I'm just not paying attention and I'll just forget its a he or a she or I'll forget what patient I'm on and think I'm still on the "the lady with the pelvic pain..." and type she when really it's a he.

Anybody have any suggestions to help me remember my genders?

Typing. This is NOT typing, it is transcribing. There is a BIG difference. sm
Transcription includes typing, but so much more.
Chars aren't counted in gross lines. If you have a 4-line paragraph...sm
you have 4 gross lines, no matter how long or short the sentences are. A heading on it's own line is 1 gross line. A signature on it's own line is 1 gross line. The date at the top of a document on it's own line is 1 gross line. Anything on a line going from margin to margin is 1 gross line, no matter how few or many characters, or if there are spaces or not, even if there's only 1 character on that line like 'A' for instance. Does this  help? :)
Does anyone pay by the character?

Does anyone know of a legit company that pays by the character?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

68 character
With 68 character line. What is h/f?
Hmm, that comes out to almost 8 cpl 65 character
Plus freebies, of course with gross line. Am I missing something here?
If you went from a 70 to a 65 character

line, then it should be easier to reach incentive.  That was a positive for you, not a negative. Unless of course they changed the total line requirement for incentive to kick in.

Character count
I have no tip, but my co is also doing that. UGH!
charging per character
What is the average charge per char??  A dr called me and told me he is currently paying .002 per char.  If I calculated right, that would be .13 cpl.  Is it standard to charge char w/spaces or not? Thanks for any info, I always have charged by the line
Yes, really. It's a character issue.
When someone is a thief, it is only a matter of time before they start stealing from friends. I could never trust someone I knew to be a thief. I do not care to share any part of my life with someone of poor character.
Hope its Kim. Her character can go in IMO. nm

Not if you are paid by every 65 character
and that is what the poster said: If you are on a line count that just takes characters and divided by 65, then font doesn't matter.
I charge $0.18 cpl (65 character) - so you are
in the ballpark, I suppose.
I am in Northern CA.
Black character......
means any black mark (typed character) seen on the page.  Sneaky way of saying you are not being paid for spaces - which just boggles my mind..........
20-character lines.
it's the only explanation.

javascript:editor_insertHTML('text','');
65-character line
Some of you have asked about what her lines consist of. Her lines are the same as mine--65-character line including spaces. I know she has some templates, but I just really think that she's exaggerating somewhat. Maybe she can hit 500-600, but I just don't see how anything higher than that is possible.

I do like a good challenge, though, so I'm going to get started with my Instant Text and see where my counts are a month or so from now.

Thanks for all of your replies!!
These are 65-character lines,
Now there's an idea. The 30-character line.
Is this a 65-character line?
Are you getting paid extra for bold, underlying, etc? Don't see how they figure 6 cpl with spaces equals 9 cpl unless they use a different character count for their lines.
I don't think so. If it's a 65 character line, they probably
But regardless of how they do it, 9 cpl to the client has just GOT to equal poorly-transcribed, offshored medical records. I sure hope my record isn't one of them.

8 cpl 65 character in 8 hour day

Hello everyone - Question  for anyone who is making 8 cpl at 65 characters in an 8 hour day.  How much do you make per day, or how many lines do you do in a day, on an average?  Please be honest, I am trying to figure out if it is just me and I suck,  or if everyone struggles with this ridiculous line rate.  Remember in an 8 hour time period.  Thanks

70 character line
Is there anybody out there in the entire universe who uses a 70-character line?   I work at a hospital and we have to type 1100 lines a day on a 70-character line.  Just curious.
Character count tips
The hospital/clinic I work for is changing the counting method from gross lines to character count.  Does anyone have any tips on increasing production using total characters?  Thanks
I think it was based on 65-character line

All these formulas are confusing to me. I guess I need to ask some more questions. But, it's also an IC position, so that makes a difference doesn't it? Low pay for that? But, you are right, might be good experience.

One character or key Stroke is equal
... to one byte (including spaces or anyother character, remember one KEY STROKE regardless of the input). If you ever want to calculate your bytes for certain amount of text -> paste it on NotePad and save it as text file. Later you can right click on the file to get it's properties to see it's exact size.
What is "compensation 65-character line B/W"? nm
xx
Has anyone ever heard of B & W 65 character line?
What exactly is it?  I know 65 characters, but is that without spaces or what??
