Excuse me -- that is called "line padding" and
one can be fired over that.
Be glad they didn't ding you for padding your lines.
sm
The so-called "reality show" is the lowest form of so-called entertainment in recent years
I hate them. They've ruined TV.
line padding
Okay. I have doctors who dictate words like "toc" for tocolysis, "conj" for conjunctiva, and other shortened versions of words that are not proper. I call this sloppy dictating and I always spell out the word IF I know exactly what they mean. If I don't know what they mean, I flag it for QA. Would you call that line padding? My account doesn't give any specifics on this. I was also taught to NEVER use abbreviations in diagnoses even if dictated. Is that considered line padding? Just wondering.
Besides padding counts
I worked with someone who got into the Lanier system and moved jobs typed from other transcriptionists onto her number. We were all "judged" by how many minutes we could type per day besides lines and also judged for raises by difficulty of the dictators we typed. Everyone could not figure out how she did so "well" until we started logging by hand the job #s that we did each day and then checked on it later. Lots of them magically moved over to her number. Somehow she got the Admin password and was putting it to "good use." It was mind-boggling and eye-opening.
Yes, like why do MTSOs allow padding to
x
I hardly think she was padding line counts.
There are a lot of doctors out there who are completely ignorant in regard to spelling, proper sentence construction, and grammar.  And with their grandiose and overly inflated egos, they don't like to be corrected by a peon transcriptionist.
Most of the Logitech ones seem to be less clacky. Put some padding under it, too, if

Could this be the reason padding allowed to

Line padding is not using standard abbreviations and

I agree, and it's also how they get more money out of their customers, too, by padding

MTSO usually also repeats benefit of padding

Discussion re padding counts. Anyone remember where it was?

Line padding is also adding little blank characters

like spaces throughout the report to get paid more.  I saw reports at MQ and Sp that had lines of spaces shown on reveal codes between paragraphs where someone either didn't know how to work their expander, was cutting and pasting, or was deliberately padding their lines.

As for typing out abbreviations, I work on an account that doesn't use abbreviations at all.  I use otcx for over-the-counter, etc.

Employee padding time-card = "unethical".
Employees get fired for padding their paychecks, but employers don't mind how much overtime you work, as long as they don't have to pay you for anything but the lines you typed.
Line padding is also adding extra words. See inside.

Doc says:  "General. Alert and oriented, no distress. HEENT:  Eyes clear. Lungs:  Clear."

MT types: GENERAL EXAMINATION:  In general, the patient is alert and oriented. The patient is in no distress. HEENT EXAMINATION:  The patient's eyes are clear.  LUNG EXAMINATION:  The patient's lungs are clear.

I kid you not. And there are companies out there that will defend the MT's right to do so. But, would the client's approve of it? I seriously think not.

there a note on the company board from QA regarding cherrypicking and they mention "line padding&
This is a new one on me.  I've heard of cherrypicking but what constitutes line padding?  Isn't everybody typing what the doctor dictates?  How can you possibly add extra????
It's time we all called NJ. I called

They can't provide anything in writing.

Nobody knows anything - keep telling you to call your supervisor.

I smell something worse than New Orleans coming from NJ.

Aaahhhh, now I get it. Gross lines vs. Character lines. I guess I've just been conditioned to
think in terms of character lines.  One of the perils of working as an IC for somebody who defines what a line is versus owning your own company and defining it yourself.  After working for someone else for 15 years, maybe it's time to bust out on my own.
That is a lot of work/lines for 2 people. I do 3000 lines per day sm
if you times that by 30 days that only comes to 90K lines a month, that is working 7 days a week including weekends. I don't think 2 people can handle that.
900 lines is below 1100 lines, where the bonus starts.
x
Gross lines include all lines containing
printable characters, so a full line and a line with one word on it are charged equally. Straight lines are basically the same as gross lines, but with this method of counting the blank lines are counted as well (again, equally). I have only had one company pay this way, and they are a middle man. I would think the charge would be about the same as for gross lines, and that not too many offices will want their lines counted this way (the one I worked on was probably inherited from someone who had counted the lines that way, so just continued).
The norm is 1 minute = 10 lines; 10 min = 100 lines - sm
granted this varies per dictator. More lines if a fast talker, less if a slow talker.
I went from 2400 lines to 1800 lines

a day when I switched from clinic (through an MTSO)  to hospital work. Not only was the clinic work easier with more macros (and less providers to learn, 12 vs 300+), but I was typing in straight Word (as opposed to Softmed/Chart Script).  So you see, it really varies depending upon the type of work as well as the platform used. That said, I am so much happier typing the 1800 lines per day (I make over $15 per hour plus an incentive for any lines in excess of 1200 per day) plus a great health package/benefits, AND approximately 5 weeks of paid time off per year.  In my opinion, hospitals really are the best employers WHEN they appreciate the work we do.

My advice for you is not to judge a job by any one criterion but rather the entire picture. The 'extra's can really add up.

Good luck in your job!

Which is the one where they are sc*&ing us the standard lines or the qualified lines? SM
Mine show up as STD when I pull up my transcription log.  But I see now there is STD/QT....  So which is the one where they are ripping us off, standard or qualified?  Need to know.  I am about to switch companies and I will not do if they are actually taking lines from me.  Thanks guys.
Question versus gross lines versus 65-character lines....

I have always charged or been paid by 65 or 60 character lines or per letter or space typed, but have never been paid or charged per gross line.

What is the advantage of this?  If I were to charge 11 cents per 65-character line including spaces, what does this figure out to for an average line rate and how do you do this calculation?

I'm wondering if it is financially beneficial for me to bill by gross line or to keep it the way I have it.  I do know some accounts will only pay per 65-character line, as this was the deal my first own account I recently acquired.  They were adamant on a 65-character line, but didn't specify with or without spaces and I personally would never not charge for spaces.

Thanks for explaining this.  I appreciate it and hope everyone has a speedy day.

Word count: 824 lines. DocuCount count: 897 lines.
I just counted the same file in Word and then in DocuCount, and DocuCount was higher than Word.

Just as an aside.
I think all new mts should be called
mt wannabe (that's me) I wannabe, but feel like I will never get this down ever.... my job is so hard that my day is such a breeze !!!!!!
he just called nm
nmn
I called them
with my complaints and filed an Employee Complaint form but they say that there are no problems, they are only getting isolated complaints -so EVERYONE who has a complaint needs to call them and follow up with a filed written Employee Complaint.
seems to me if he called YOU, he should already know your name...sm
just my opinion. I hate these calls and mostly never answer until it becomes three or four times a day, then I answer and I am not nice. they usually do not call back after that. It has been relatively quiet around here for a while now...knock on wood. lol
Can you tell me what else it's called please?

That might explain why I didn't get such good results on my search.

that's called....
the old bait and switch!!  They ALL do that!  :(
They are called.....sm
They are referred to as non-word utterances. And if you want to belong to a forum that is not just MT, I own one at Google Groups called the Legal, Medical, and General Transcription forum. The URL is http://groups.google.com/group/Legal-Medical-General-Transcription?hl=en
Yes, I have what are called
Druscens and I do not see them, only can be seen with the lamp exam physician does. These can be started on macular degeneration. My vision is excellent but knowing what I do, make sure I take eye vitamin, eat leafy greens, no smoking and wear sunglasses out always.
You called her? LOL.
x
Have you called your QA to ask about it?
x
That was not called for.
Your are totally wrong for berating this person the way you did.
I was called....sm
but called and told them I was sick. I wasn't really but how do they know? I have other things to do.
I called about it . . .
and had information sent to me.  From the commercials I thought it was a non-invasive procedure, but it is very similar to a traditional facelift.  They do say the incisions are smaller, so healing is quicker.  They also say the scars are less noticible.  The before and after photos look incredibly good to me.  I'm still considering it, and if I wasn't such a chicken I might just do it.
Have you ever just called a

business and just interviewed them before you applied so they could interview you?  Does that make sense.?   I may have an in-house transcription job.  They told me that everything was looking in my favor, but they are still interviewing and will let me know for sure Friday.  They offered a pretty good wage and I would take it but if I can find something closer to home even if a little less pay I would go for that too.   I have been looking into businesses that have nothing to do with transcription.  I am thinking about calling the local banks and seeing if there are any entry-level positions available for data entry, administrative assisting, clerk.  I don't have an accounting degree of business degree, just extensive computer knowledge that transcription requires. I really don't know what to ask for to tell the truth.  The local banks never advertise for help but I do see new people in there from time to time.

I have also been looking to get my CNA certificate renewed which I may just do.  I was going to call the nursing homes here and see what the starting pay would be, what the patient/aide ratio is, what the hours would be like.

To tell the truth, I am not making it with these home jobs.  I have already been through 3 companies.  I never had a work history like that before.  Before I came home, I stayed with 1 place for 8 years, then another place for 6 years before that.  I hate jumping around and most of all, I hate babysitting my computer for work.  I want 8 hours then be done.

just called the bank and

Yeah, they called me twice
not possible to block a "100" number and that is all there is. It is weird.
Here it's called Transcam (sm)
Do a search at the top of the board. You'll get plenty of information on their scam.
Isn't that called profit
They charge the hospital more than they pay us.... yes.....don't understand what is supposed to be bad about that.  It's called profit.  As far as calculating the lines differently for the MT versus how they count them for the hospital for billing, there is nothing illegal about that and there is nothing that says they have to calculate the lines the same way.
well, they called me yesterday, but (sm)
I wasn't here.  So, she left a message, stating that if I had any questions regarding the new plan, I could call them back.  I aint even gonna bother...just see what happens when it happens.  But, if anyone else does talk with them, I'd love to know what they have to say! Good day all!
I called ATT and they told me to get the
AllDistance plan for $40/month. Is this what I want? I asked for unlimited business LD. Also, does anyone know if they would have 'red-flagged' our #? I mean, we had ATT initially and were kicked off for using the personal ULD for dictation and we switched to MCI. So would ATT have noted this and then not let us have the business ULD? I appreciate all the help, ladies!
It's called ENABLING
nm
Have you called the teacher? sm
Over the years I've had to e-mail and talk on the phone to my child's teachers. If you don't have the teacher's number or e-mail, you could probably call your child's school and get the information. If the teacher is worth his/her salt, they would probably be happy to help you out.
I just called my office and was
told there was nothing on every single account.  No work at all this whole weekend she said probably.  Nada, nothing, zip.
It's called eloping........sm

When you have 7 or 8 patients at night you can't possibly physically watch all of them at once.  If you're in a room with a patient who is going bad or in the middle of a complicated dressing change, you can't watch the hall.

With all of the budget and staff cuts at the hospital where I work, I could very easily see where a patient could walk off the floor and out of the hospital.  There is one security guard at the entrance to the hospital and if s/he is in the bathroom or dealing with an issue away from the desk, well, it is very possible a patient could just walk right out.

My question to you is:  where were the family members?  We ask that a family member stay with the patient if the patient is confused.  You need a doctor's order for restraints, and patients are not tied up these days because they wander.

Tired RN.
