We backed out of the deal.  We just didn't feel comfortable with it.  Our realtor is working on getting our earnest money back.

Thanks again everybody!  I really appreciate your advice.  It's helpful to ask the opinion of others who aren't directly in the situation and that can be objective.  We were too emotionally involved to think clearly.  But, after reading all the advice, I came to my senses.
