Sorry, I don't wear "smarty pants." I wear thongs. Hehehe

I wear cheapie ear buds from Target, any brand, usually Koss. Comfy, light, good sound, cheap. nm

I think either is acceptable.
I think either is acceptable.  It depends on the account specifics, some accounts I have worked on request that it only be single space.  I learned to double space while learning keyboarding and I think it is accepted either way.  I think it makes the report easier to read if you double space, but that's just me.
Of course, the acceptable way to do it is the

You really think it's acceptable sm

to pass up the "hard jobs" or ESLs that an MT might not be able to do and leave them for someone else who might be better equipped to handle them?

I think the MT that needs to do that has not business being in that work pool in the first place even having the opportunity to pass those reports by.  They shouldn't be employed.

Thanks! It's nice to know what is acceptable. nm

SH's a lot more widely acceptable than not. SM
If I were interested in browsing the want ads, I'd contact ShortHand itself to chat about what platforms don't work well with Shorthand even after their finetuning. That way choices wouldn't be unnecessarily limited and no dependence would be placed on possibly questionable info from Personnel personnel. Best wishes.
My question - why is this acceptable? SM
When did it become OK to have a doctor with a thick accent dictating so badly that we can't understand simple diagnoses, lab values, and to submit reports full of blanks?  Why is it OK that docs without thick accents are mumbling, holding the phone so close we can't understand?  Why is the staff at hospitals so afraid of the doctors that they can't ask them to please slow down, speak clearly, etc.?  I am absolutely convinced that the staff and hospitals just don't care anymore.
I know it says it once and once is all it takes. We are moving away from it but still acceptable.nm

Is no raise after 7 years acceptable?
I work as an independent contractor.  I have been with my office (had two doctors to begin with, took on a third two years ago), and I have never raised my rates.  I went in and talked to my docs about a raise today (after emailing a couple weeks ago to set up a meeting about it).  Not only did they say that's NOT happening, but the doc actually told me he expected my line count to go DOWN with the new system they are implementing.  He was upset that he had been paying me for a line count that included macros of a few paragraphs and it only took me a few key strokes to get there.  Also, they checked around and someone under-bid me for 2 cents less, so they were acting like they are doing me a favor by paying me my same line rate.  Am I crazy to be super upset about this?
Sounds like any old pair of cut offs would be acceptable....

The description reminds me of my MUCH older brother's wedding circa 1973.... She was barefoot, he was in ripped jean cut off shorts, the preacher looked like something that crawled out from under a rock, and when he asked my brother if he had anything to say, he "grunted."  Gawd, it was awful.  I'm sure this wedding you're going to won't be that bad, but if the bride is barefoot and the groom is in khakis, then any decide informal summery outfit would probably be A-ok.

Honestly, I've done both and QA is easier. If the pay is acceptable, TAKE IT! sm
I learned MORE doing QA than doing MT, and it's still easier. You have the benefit of the rest of the chart to help you fill in blanks. Trust, it's not a scary job. If I could make a decent wage at my company I'd absolutely go back to QA.
In BOS, pg 172, follow-up is still acceptable for noun/adj (see page 172 in parenthesis) nm

excuse sees acceptable to me since it's a mandatory call.
Life is too short and this seems small to me. Maybe it wouldn't be if I were in your shoes, but it does to me right now, for sure.

Enjoy life, one day at a time.
Never said that typos were acceptable, what I said was is 100% accuracy expected 100% of the time.

Yes, I used to work in a docs office doing this as well as other things and but never had this problem. That is why I am frustrated.  My question was whether or not there was a curve for MT'ing or not.  I guess I just was not clear on exactly what editors/QA were really meant for.  I thought they were more of a saftey net for a TX company to ensure that everythign that goes out is what it should be.  But I guess I was mistaken.

Anyway, I was thinking that maybe there was something else similar in this field that would be an option for me to do.  Since I actually like this line of work, I don't see why I should give up so easily.

Lastly, its just me, but I actually think staying at home with my kids is a perfect reason to do this for a living.  I mean seeing as though I actually do want to earn a honest living doing something that I have experience doing ...why not?  It's better than relying the government for money to support my family isn't it?

Gotta a question... When you have an offer from a company, is it acceptable to basically..SM

give the company a set of terms.  Here's my issue.  I have 15+ years experience as an MT and I am finding after I've accepted the job, that I am placed on the crappiest account they have because of my years of wonderful "experience".  Then I'm told that they are paying me the higher cpl rate not because of years of experience but because I'm working on the crappy account that no one else can do.

I find it very difficult to earn a living this way and wonder if there are jobs out there where a seasoned MT can just sit down and type carefree 8 hours a day.  I'm not saying I don't want to ever type ESL dictation, but can I get an account where the majority is not ESL?

I'm good at what I do.  I love OP notes and don't mind challenging work, but it's simply not fair.  I feel like I'm being penalized for my years of hard work more than rewarded and I resent it.

Makes you wonder how they passed grade school grammar. No it is not acceptable.
I agree 100%.
not at all. that word and the double hocky sticks were ruled acceptable in the late 50s -
and no longer curse words.

Funny, the other board Hitlered it, but they allow the one where the typist pounds his head on the keyboard and blood spurts EVERWYERE until he is dead.

Guess violence, suicide is funny to them.

I don't have a store...

I do auctions.  I try to be very careful about what I list.  I love books and have in the thousands of them, mostly educational material.  I have been selling those on half.com for a long time, so my time listed as a member is about 6 years.  It has only been in the last couple of months that I really started trying to power sell--everything you can think of--collectibles, books, clothes, my felt sets, shoes, etc.  You just have to watch the market and know that what you list will sell (hopefully) so that you don't lose money in fees.  I am still learning, but so far I have been very lucky and have made some good sales.

I wear them
but I paid a lot for the small ones that fit in the ear canal. That way i can use the head phones. Contractor loves my work so seems to be working out well.

Let me know if any other questions.
Ear wear?

So they scammed you out of money, complain about that.  Don't go turning it into a HIPAA violation.  That is the part that is dumb.  No one stole your purse, knocked you over the head, and took your money.  You didn't have to pay them.  You paid, now your mad, so you want to get them back by filing a HIPAA complaint.  At least have the guts to admit what your doing instead of whining like a baby.

The UPS Store only allows the automatic $100 if you pay
them to package your stuff. I learned that one trying to ship equipment back to my former employer. I wasn't about the shell out even more money for them to box up something that I put back in the company's original box.

I go to Kroger's too, our store here does not do it - sm
though, at least I have never seen it there. Granted most of the time I do the self checkout but when I do go through a regular line I have not encountered it. I really like our Krogers too, I only wish their prices were a bit lower....my husband can easily drop $100-$200 when he goes shopping there.
You can store their reports, but sm
to give them access at their own free will is not the way I would go.  Of course, I charge my accounts when I have to search archives.  It is a flat rate even if I find the document or not.  If I find it, then it is faxed.  I have never really heard of letting your client search your files though.  In other words, they get a copy of the original report.  If they lose it, they get charged again.  Right or wrong, I don't know, but that is my method.
Almost any computer store will have them.
I bought a laptop about 5 months ago that has XP, but is Vista compatible.  I don't think everything has Vista on it right now because there are still too many problems with it.  If you went to any of the big box electronic stores they should have one with XP.
I tell my hubby I have to run to the store,

the scout ants will carry back to their nest(?) and eradicate the entire colony.  What I used was a product that was a small, enclosed tin thing with a hole in top.  It held a poisonous gel.  I think there were 3 in a box.  Sorry, can't remember the name.  Anyway, I never saw ants in the house since using these.

start a fad - wear a wig
I think the idea of wearing wigs is very trendy and up and coming.  I hate having to fool with my hair every morning or spend 3 hours in the salon each week -- if it were up to me, and I could find good looking wigs -- I would shave my head and wear a different one every day -- just velcro that sucker on.  I think the beauty industry fears that we may just well do this and prevents making really really good wigs -- but I think the time is coming...and very soon.

Anyone that would normally wear bifocals

able to function with contacts?  I need new contacts.  My optometrist says that he can make my contacts function so that I don't need the granny glasses, but so far I feel like my eyes are zooming in and out like the lens on a camera trying to focus.  I also have glasses, but I need a stronger prescription and if I have to go back to glasses I have to get bifocals.  I really don't want the lines, but have heard from several people that they have problems without the lines.  My DH has bifocals without the line and he says it makes him dizzy sometimes.  Optometrist says he just needs a smaller frame/lens.

I've got to do something soon as I'm getting daily headaches, but just can't decide what to do.  I am legally blind without correction and my lenses are about $300/pair without any of the extras.  Fortunately I have good frames and won't need new ones.  I really would prefer contacts as my vision seems to be so much clearer when I'm looking far off, but up close I just don't know if I can use them.

What to wear to a wedding-sm

I just can't decide.  It's an evening wedding, outside in a park.  Apparently the bride is going to be barefoot and the groomsmen are in khaki pants.  That's about all I know.

Could I wear slacks and a casual top? Or go with my original plan to wear a dress and sandals?  Or does it matter at all?  Lol.

Don't know about that but I definitely think Yoko should wear a bag...

Do any of you wear gloves while
And if so, what kind?

My hands get very cold while I type, which makes them stiff and therefore makes it harder for me to type.

Have any of you found that wearing a thin pair of gloves maybe with just the fingertips cut out helps this at all?

mileage. Do you have a back up vehicle if it breaks down so you can get to work? Personally I just don't think a 100+ plus drive to work is worth it, no matter what the pay, but if your bottom line makes this a better offer you need to figure out if you want to make that drive 5 days a week (unless you can work something out with them and work 10 hour days, and only drive it 4 days a week).
Any WAH MTs wear scrubs?

I'm tired of wearing out my jeans (not to mention that they aren't that comfortable to sit in all day) and want to be more professional than working in sweats -- I used to work in Medical Records and wore scrubs, and I loved them.

Hubby caught me surfing ebay for scrubs and laughed at me -- he didn't see why I would wear a uniform if I didn't have to, but the way I see it -- it makes me feel more professional and is a comfortable and effortless solution that is better than bathrobes and slippers.  Am I crazy or silly for wearing a uniform to work when I work in my dining room?

Any other scrub-wearing MTs out there?

Headset - what do you wear?
I just can't seem to find anything that I really like.  I want good sound quality (of course), not bulky, comfortable.  What do you like?
For those who wear gloves

for RSI/carpal tunnel problems, which brand do you use?  I'm curious because I have been looking at a few different brands on-line, but cannot seem to find them locally, so my husband picked up one from Wal-Mart last night, which does seem to be helping the pain somewhat, but it is difficult to type while wearing it.  Some of the ones I've seen mentioned on here before (Handeze, Smart Glove, and Softflex) appear that they may be more flexible than what I've got and so better for working.

Any info you guys could offer would be a great help and much appreciated.

okay, what's those gloves some MTs wear?
i never paid much attention before, but 2 of my fingers are so cold; and now i want to know!!
What is acceptable error rate (i.e. error ratio to line count).

And, the meat in the grocery store comes
I believe that if you buy "beef" it comes from cows, an animal. I believe if you buy "chicken" it comes from chickens, an animal.
I was a cashier in a grocery store and
he came in to buy groceries for his mother. We were both 17 and married 1-1/2 years later, been married for almost 27-1/2 years now.
have you tried the library (if you still have one) or the grocery store...
like, lingering, you know? I have been approached many times by men like that...

how about friends, does anyone have a set-up for you, even just for some companionship?

how about volunteering for things, like a food pantry or wildlife center.

of coures, goes without saying to be cautious always when out in public these days...

also, laundromats I always see single guys...

anyone else?
Went there for paint. Brand new store. SM
I asked for specific color and the kid behind the counter starting mixing it. It seemed to be taking a long time, Home Depot takes second, all because he had an old fashioned paint machine where you had to manually put in the colors, not computerized like Home Depot. So why didn't I go to Home Depot? Good question.
Thanks fine for a warehouse store where they don't bag.
