Candles essential in my home...sm
I will even pass up the highlighting kit that covers up my gray hair for a candle(s)! I'll even have an awesome coupon for the exact kit that I use, but if I'm low on candles, I'll go to the dollar store and load up instead! I dunno, there's just something about the mood they create that I love!

In my single days, when I had great MT jobs that paid well, I bought the coolest candle from a novelty store (yeah, they sold XXX toys there too!). Anyway, that candle made the room look so nice. It came in a Mason-type jar, and lit the room in a special way (it was definitely a bedroom candle)! It was pretty expensive, but I wasn't poor back then. I'd love to find one just like it again, and be able to afford to buy it.

We're all just different people liking different things I guess.

What kind of things do you buy when you have a few extra dollars (for just yourself)?

I was told my a computer tech that if you have more than 1
firewall that they disable each other.
It works!! Thank goodness for tech support. sm
They had to call the developer and he got into my pc and fixed it. Now I am up and running.
Tech question for all those computer gurus out there. I have XP Pro. I have DSL but I keep getting
I don't know if there is a problem with the interface between the two or not, but it really doesn't seem to matter if I'm on the VPN or not.  Even if I'm not on the net, just out of the blue I'll get that little icon in the tray that says I can't connect/or am not connected.  This will happen if I'm just surfing the net without VPN, with VPN but without being on the net, or even when I just turn on the computer.  Sometimes I have to reboot 10 times before I can connect.  Any ideas or suggestions would be great.  THANKS for your expertise in this area.  :>)
Looking for computer tech guru to take Vista to XP...sm
I need to move a Vista computer to XP Home.  Bought the Vista system, but is not compatible with a bunch of stuff.  Have a copy of XP Home that will work.  Anybody that can help with that?  TIA
IT works with eScription. Call their tech support.

True. I was told this by a friend who is a computer tech at a company
here in town. He was going to do it for me. No way would I try to do it myself. Luckily, I was able to buy one with XP on it from Dell.
What virus program/internet security do you use - always used Norton, but a computer tech told me

I know how you feel but you better find something that works.

Last year was such a horrible time for me and my family.  I was fighting a bout with major depression - officially diagnosed by a psychiatrist - but I had no alternative to extra income.  I had a miscarriage, lost one of the most precious people to me in my life and eventually went downhill from there.  I could not get motivated to do much work.  Made a few hundred dollar paydays was all and I lost my home, lost my car, had to move somewhere I did not want to, my cat died at the same time.  So many things went wrong and no matter how bad I needed the money (to save my home, my car, etc.) I could not get it together and I wish, oh how I wish, that I would have found some way.  I know our instances may be different due to where I was major depressive at that point in time but the point it - find ANYTHING to get you motivated to stay on track.  I don't want to see or hear of anyone go through what my family and I went through last year.  And, again, I know different circumstances but could end in the same result.  So maybe my story will get you motivated.  Think of possibly losing it all and that will get you in gear.

Good news though - found a lovely place to live where the bills are so easy (got to move from the craphole we first had to move to), nicer than our home, so much more financial freedom where I can work less than what I was having to work just to keep our old home.  Still working on the depression though - but am seeing the rainbow!

I have read some things before about getting on the ball.  I get bored too.  What helps me at times is I set a timer or watch the clock....Work as hard as I can for 1 hour and then take a small break (like 10 minutes) and then do it again.  I am anxious to work hard to see what I can get in my hours time.  Maybe it is trying to trick myself psychologically...lol...but it works.

Good luck to you!  I think we all hit this at some point!  But the nice paydays are VERY NICE when we get them!

I put my left leg on top of the computer tower, works great

And the dad works from home!!!
Scotty's dad works from home!! How is his work more important than mine. Also the wife supports him and he barely works but only a few of us know that. He is just LAZY and figures I'm going to drive anyway, why not help his lazy butt out.
It's always the first thing a computer person asks me...lol! And it works a lot of the time. nm

IC on home computer

My software for transcription is password protected.  Only I can access it.  I work on our "family" computer.  I figure as long as no one but me can see the medical records, I'm good to go.  You do want to make sure your virus protection is always up to date, especially if you have kids using the same computer.

Anyone who works at home with little ones is an angel. sm
I always wanted to try it when my kids were small, but knew it wouldn't work. I have to laugh at the "he said, she said" comment. My boys are now 28, 22, and 19. All three of them at home when they were small was like a lesson in mob action. Add to that the neighbor boys-5 of them-all the same age as my children and our neck of the woods was a war zone. I was lucky I could go to the bathroom without courting disaster and that was a big IF. I look back and wonder how I lived through it. We have good story telling time now, though........... So, anyone who manages to work at home with their children gets the halo of the day from me.
Poster says she works from home
I bought my condo where I have a home office (35 y/o bldg) at one price and it has nearly doubled because of the area I live in. As I read it, the poster stated her house......
Home Video to computer anyone?
Does anyone know anything about transferring home videos to computer?  When I got a digital camera I had to play with the program which came with the camera for a while before I got the hang of it.  I now have a digital video camera and trying to get the video to the computer.  I think I have a program that edits video but it asks me about a source.  All I did so far is plug the camera via USB port to the computer.  Oh, the camera did not come with any special program.  Any ideas.  Thanks.
I work for a hospital from home on my computer and they do this too. sm
I was told that it is becoming more and more common to see this happen as the internet can open the hospital to too many vulnerabilities. It's my computer but I am on their clock, so I am OK with it. I prefer my books to internet research though so it is not so bad for me.

Good luck with this.
Just staring at the computer screen can make me feel drugged after 9 hours.

PLEASE! Let's suppose a supervisor works an 8 hour day on and off. At home.
What does this supervisor do? So I have a supervisor now see. Every now and again I will get an e-mail that tells me account is behind or caught up. Not on a daily basis and sometimes not even on a weekly basis. Now besides looking into the computer to see account is behind or up to date, what does this supervisor do in the course of an on and off 8 hour day?

I am assuming this "supervisor" is not doing QA or anything, just supervising an account. So any questions regarding QA are sent off to QA personnel. So what questions can a supervisor have that would tie up their day? EIGHT HOURS of a working day doing what?
i am an inhouse hospital transcriptionist who works at home
I am an in house hospital transcription who works at home. I get 19.00 an hour plus incentive pay which is 7 cents a line after 1,000 lines. and 7.5 cents after 1,500 lines.
Can an at home employee deduct a computer on taxes?

Try Home Depot. Got it in 2 days. Great computer with XP too!

I have access from home via moden to their computer file.
I have a dial up number to access the office computer file for the op notes I send over the modem. They print them at the office and take if from there. I have Dictaphone and they dictate reports via any phone into my two lines at home. The office had a computer tech set it up on my computer, to work with theirs. It is a nice arrangement. They can fix it so you can't access any other files at the office.
Actually, no don't feel weird working at home.. sm
You make a life outside of MTing too. Your message was "who smiles at everyone way too much and tries too hard to make conversation." I'd say, how nice, how kind, how interesting to be around. As opposed to the years of office toods (attitudes), back-biting all the time in offices, no thanks, no thanks ever again. Just tell others you meet you work at home making a living and look at their eyes (they wish they could too, oh yes) the longing for peace and some measure of tranquility. You CAN be a very interesting person to be around.
Do you think you would feel isolated working at home?sm

I do have children and I have worked at home for the last 7 years, the whole time they were both infants.  I have one in school now and one in preschool.  You are right.  There are benefits to being able to pick them up or staying out with them, and I hadn't really thought about the costs of clothing, gas, etc. - good point.  Thanks for your input.

Non-essential personnel.
You're right about QA. I've been saying this for years. I worked at one of the top hospitals in the country and there was almost no QA or editing after training. You leave a blank and the dictator fills it in and makes other corrections as necessary before signing it. You look it up on the system the next day to find out what it was.

"More suits" are typically found at the national "corporations." So is the high overhead of maintaining a corporate headquarters with lots of padded chairs and air conditioners. I prefer an MTSO working out of their basement but the corporate profiteers devoured most of them or drove them out.

If you are making more and working fewer hours I'd say you are clearly the rare exception to the rule these days. I'm currently making about half what I did a year ago with a smaller company and it's not a bad line rate compared to what most others are advertising.

Has anyone tried accessing your own home computer from a laptop remotely with PC Anywhere or similar

I'm wondering if this is possible instead of having to install everything on my laptop to work remotely.  It would be nice if I could hook up to my home PC with my laptop and am wondering if there is a program that would allow me to do so or do I have to re-install everything on my laptop to work remotely.

I have auto corrects, medical spell check, medical dictionary, etc., that I would need on both computers.

TIA

anyone feel weird working at home all the time?
Who smiles at everyone way too much and tries too hard to make conversation?
I know how you feel. Working at home can be distracting, just having other things on our minds (sm)
like dirty dishes in the sink, piling up laundry, a bed right across the hall to take a nap in. What works for me is tune everything out including internet distractions and e-mails, phone calls. No more than a 10 minute break every couple of hours, 30 minutes lunch time and just hit those keys. The end result can be pretty rewarding.
mix any essential oil with salt to crumbly form sm
it makes a scrub, really good for arthritis. scrub it into your hands over the sink. rinse off. leaves hands soft, silky, and painfree for a while. i used peppermint oil last time i mixed some and it left that cooling feeling in my hands for a while and i loved it! takes my pain away and i do this every morning before i start typing as i wake up with my hands/wrists aching.

Agree. You could be a Surgical Tech or Respiratory Therapy or a Med. Tech. nm

Working full time at home with small children is hard but part time works great
is almost impossible. You will either have to work when your spouse is home or for only a few hours during the day and then more when they are asleep. I work part time at home and my kids (2&5 now) have done very, very well. They are great kids, very well behaved, don't get into much. I stop working to check on them/give them some attention every hour or so while I work (5 hours each afternoon or so) and they get all my attention in the morning and at night. It has worked out beautifully for us.
take essential oil and mix with salt and do a hand scrub. feels awesome, smells awesome, and very r

Full Word is in the Works "Suite," not plain Works.
Works saves files in a different format, but you can open them in Word if you have the correct filter installed.
RIGHT!!! Someone who works 16 hours and someone who works 60 will have a HUGE difference. NM

Question about transfering computer into to another computer.. sm

I have a dumb question - Just bought a new computer and someone told me to get a flash drive to transfer all my info.  But I'm assuming that ExText that I work off of and Escription will have to be downloaded again by the tech people onto my new computer.  I can tranfer these can I?

Thanks

How does one find out the computer specs on my computer?

I should know this, but I just don't remember how to do this.  I am hoping I have enough RAM, or whatever, to load work platform on my own computer and begin working on it, rather than paying *rent* on the company-furnished computer.  Thanks so much.

A computer is a computer, whether it be laptop or desktop.
I have both and use both and I bought both of mine...most companies do not provide computers...
if you feel like that after 12 years, and I feel like that after six months
what hope is there?
I feel people who feel like this post
needs to a) either be a stay at home mother and not work or b) realize that she is no queen bee and I could care less about a degree. What company out here that you know of compensates for having a degree? Means nothing to them. Your working and being there when they assign/need/require/whatever is what you should do IF YOU WANT A JOB in this field, otherwise get out and do something else or become that babysitter.
My kids have suffered greatly from me working at home with them home. SM
I have been working at home as an MT since my two kids were born. They are now 4 and 5. In the first few years, I had no help whatsoever. Their father was a bum who didnt work or take care of them while I worked. Your children get neglected while you work basically. And babies and young children desperately need your attention while they are home with you.

My kids have so many behavioral problems right now because of their neglect. I would try to set them up with things to occupy themselves, like coloring or a movie, etc.

I finally put them in day care and things have improved, but there are still a lot of issues because of the damage that was done. They still try to seek attention by doing bad things and they dont listen to me because they are so used to me letting them get away with a lot of stuff because I was too busy typing to discipline them in their early years.

If I could do it all over again, I would definitely have put them into day care from the very beginning.

My advice would be to seek PT care for your baby. Maybe you can do some work around her schedule a little when she is home, like when she takes a nap, and then bang out a bunch of work while she is in day care.

I enjoy being alone at home, but I've got one home sick from school already.

One on one with a kid is nice, too.

This summer has been absolutely crazy.  I haven't had a moment to myself for three months because all of my kids were home traipsing their friends through the house and yard.  My husband switched his work schedule, too, so he's around more than usual.  However, I like not having to do two loads of dishes and four loads of laundry a day.  There are no toys or clutter dragged out everywhere.  I can clean the house first thing in the morning, and it stays clean until everyone gets home at night.

I even got to relax with a cup of coffee and watch TV for half an hour this morning, something I liked for a change instead of cartoons or kids' movies.  I signed up for an online class that I've been wanting to take.  I can exercise without being interrupted.  Yesterday, I went to the mall and spent all my saved up gift cards.  I got some clothes, books, bath stuff, and a new coffee mug.  My work gets done a lot faster, too.  Call me nuts, but I've never had the luxury of being alone in the house for 14 years.  It's kinda nice.  I love my family with all my heart, but I love having a few hours to myself each week, too.

Except now the cat and dogs have been acting weird since the kids went back to school.  They must think that I need someone or something to clean up after and correct behavior on.  They're getting into everything and racing around the house behind me.

my take is that she worked inhouse, not at home, and now wants to find out how to work at home. nm

Forget "per line." Your take-home pay should be taking home SM
roughly what it was before. If it is not, is it because your current pay rate for editing (which in many companies keeps changing as the VR system is developed) is too low or is it because your talents and skills are more for speed typing than speed editing?

If the first, discuss it with higherups, and go get a new job if you don't get the response you need. My last MTSO was secretly refiguring how production was counted to pay us less. I can accept hard reality, it was the secrecy that burned. Sometimes, though, it's just that the learning curves of individual editors and that of the system aren't in sync, and you end up temporarily making less.

If the second, though, recognize it as soon as possible and change to straight transcription work, in your company or a new one, for as long as you can find it.

As for why we aren't paid more for a higher skill, that's just the way the labor supply ball bounces. Best wishes.

No need to feel badly for me - feel badly for an adult who has no control of his/her own life!

hospital at-home -vs- national at home

I have an interview today with a hospital...work in-house for 3 months, then go home, paid on production. I don't know as of yet what they pay production, so my question is to anyone who works for a hospital at home AND has also worked for a national at home...

Which would be the best to choose? The hospital offers great benefits, but the national I work for now also has benefits, not as good as the hospital, though.  Any input would be most appreciated!
