I'm not being rude about it, I'm trying to help as I truly don't think everyone knows what sm and nm mean.

First of all, I am so sorry for your situation. You have a lot you are dealing with. Is there any way you can quit working for a national where what I call *the line count demon* is always nipping at your heels? What about an hourly wage at an office answering phones, filing, even doing MT work but for an hourly wage. They are likely to offer good benefits and be more understanding of the situation with your mother. Could you take a less mentally taxing job than MT as a cashier, stocking shelves, anything to keep you working and bringing in some money? Maybe you could work a split shift some place and be able to take care of some things during the day, then go back to work?
Please let us know how you are coming along. I have never been in your exact situation, but at one point I did have some things going on and felt as you did with getting garbage work and struggling to meet my line counts. This can really drag you down. I truly hope you get something worked out!!
There are many things said by just about all doctors (see message)
such as alert and oriented, etc. not to mention things like peripheral vascular disease for which you can type pvd, and what about esophagogastroduodenoscopy don't you just want to type egd?
You can even have shortcuts for medication names where you just type the first couple of letters. Medical terminology is used on medical reports regardless of how many doctors you have or what kind of doctors they are.

My ex-husband was working under the table. He fell through a roof and broke his neck, his ankle and his hip, plus required 25 stitches in his head. We had been divorced for over 10 years. I helped him. This was awhile back but he could not get public assistance, he could not get anything but food stamps. He had to be off work for at least a year, to be declared disabled for SS benefits, but at 9 months out he went back to work in a Philadelphia collar. They told him welfare was just for women with children. He went to lawyers and they simply told him he "fell through the cracks". Although he was working under the table, it was for about 8.00 an hour with no benefits, he had to, that is the struggle people have. He worked on the Talmadge bridge in Savannah prior to this. Life changes, things happen. Be protected. I helped him out during that time, although we had been divorced for a long time at that point. Public assistance is hard to get if you have any decent working history at all. Never work at all, plenty easy.

I use a program called "Lil Red Notebook" (LRN) it is very inexpensive, with a free trial.
When you have to look something up, you need to make a note of it someplace, so if you don't remember it later it will be faster than looking it up all over again. I started using my LRN when I was an MT student over 5 years ago, and I still use it daily. It is much faster to look things up there, instead of starting from scratch.
You can also put the definition of things in there to help you, such as the difference between "advise" and "advice" if you have trouble remembering.
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by using "macros" - do you have an expander? That is definitely something you need, either ShortHand or Instant Text would be of huge benefit.

Let us know if you get help. I'm really worried about you. Please get checked. That would be so terrible for something to happen to you. If nothing else, go for your children. If something would happen to you right now, your children would think of that the rest of their lives at Christmas time.

Sometimes, I could swear it is QA people petting their egos by fixin' what ain't broke so that they have a reason to be hired and paid.
You also have to know that most companies won't put their top MT on QA, but they settle for those they feel are qualified. I worked for a company where they told me I would *never* be allowed to QA because I was too important as an MT, so they put a gal on to QA my work with half my experience, no knowledge of OPs or acute care, because she had managed to break both of her wrists in the past year working on the farm she shared with her husband!
We really DO need our QA people, however. In a perfect world, QA gals will strictly follow the BOS2 and account specifics and get off our tails about things that aren't wrong to start with. They will always know more than we do and will gently, respectfully and professionally correct us and teach us. It is not a perfect world.
When I hear stuff like this, I tend to think that if they were such great MTs they would still be MTs. I know that I would not work for the $16 an hour I have been offered to QA when I can MT at more than $30. You'd have to ask yourself why they gave up their stock and trade to *correct* your work.
My apologies to those of you who are QA gals. It is not a slam of ALL of you, just a few of you. I would not be the successful productive MT I am had I not had help from a couple of outstanding, patient, professional and extremely knowledgeable QA ladies.

then you're really going to be mad when you get an Indian trained in England who has a strong accent and also calls commas "stop" and periods "full stop" and perhaps throws other British names for things into reports. What was getting to me was ESLs who didn't know you could put multiple adjectives for a single noun all together in one sentence instead of making 7 different sentences, all the same except for the adjective. Grrrrr.

What has changed for me - When I was IC I felt so free - could work whenever. Also, we are all afraid we won't have a job so everything we have invested in this may be going you know where on a handcart. That makes things a lot less enjoyable for me. But, have to say, I love the way you write and I agree with other poster - you should at least try a newspaper column!
I would say your post bothers me, but
I do not see how you can say the postings break your heart. You do not know these people, and whatever they say should never reflect on how you feel. If it were your family members, could understand but to break your heart the way they talk, girl you need to get a little thicker skin. I have compassion for my family, animals, close friends but the posters on here, they do not fit into the above group.

But, also as a person of faith, i realize that people in India want to work and support their families, etc etc too, as do people around the world. I don't blame anyone for taking jobs available to them. My irritation is with this government, by and for??? the people, with politicians that make it so lucrative for employers to send our jobs elsewhere. Picture yourself in India, with needs like anyone anywhere, and tell me you wouldn't work if given the opportunity. Then picture these yayhoos in our govn't, out of touch with the American people, living quite comfortably, doing whatever seems to benefit them politically or financially, neverminding the American taxpayer who is struggling. Just refocus that irritation and then let them hear from you!!

but why is it that i should be tolerant of all your 'information' but you cannot of mine? That was a tiny part of my post. But no, if it has to do with God, there is no tolerance of that. Yet we are to be tolerant of every other ill of society and immorality, but you cannot tolerate the mere mention of God...as far as as that goes, on this board, there is the mention of food, politics, emotions, venting, company information etc -- did you notice there are boards for them too? But if i dare to mention God, i am supposed to go away...sad sad sad.

Otherwise, you might miss out on a good thing because some person on an Internet message board had a bad experience with some other company. We are all seeking different things in relation to work. Don't let our experiences scare you. One employer, one MTSO or one account doesn't set the standard for the entire industry.

I never said that. I don't get all of his reports. I work for a national. I am not the only MT on the account. This was the first I had heard him request this and I did what he asked. Had I known beforehand I would have done it before. Someone else dropped the ball on that. I let my supervisor and QA know about his request. Apparently the MT who got the request originally did not do that.

Too bad there wasn't
a way to make these people in India aware of how they are being ripped off only making $27 a day, when some of us make that in an hour. Maybe then they would demand more money from these US companies and the MTs in the US wouldn't look so expensive to employ. I almost fell out of my desk chair when I read what they make in a day.

I would love to tell you that no company ever charges a "setup fee" but that is not strictly true. I know that I have been asked to buy a pedal or Docushuttle before. I have been asked to upgrade to XP Pro, but I declined that job offer. There is still one major national who expects you to pay for transportation to their New Jersey facility and pay for your lodging. They reimberse you for part of this if you stay at least 6 months. I personally would not do that.
All companies are in this for the money (so are we) and that means they get you set up to MAKE money, as much and as quickly as you can.
You can't make things worse and could make things better.
The skinny woman may be ill. The guy might not know the dog is a nuisance. Who knows? Maybe it is not as forbidding as it seems and maybe they just need to be asked in a nice way.

It does take teamwork, however. That's something I've noticed is SORELY lacking in this industry. Everyone complains about everyone else instead of looking at their own contribution to the problem. And garbage rolls downhill, so it's the MTs who get the brunt of it for EVERYTHING. Everyone else thinks they're superior to the MTs, so there's no accountability whatsoever. Instead, the blame is shifted to the lowest person on the totem pole, AKA the MT. Righty oh?

I just made an observation that you hadn't responded yet. And I was working myself, so I was trying to be brief. Like I told Endiqua, it's not that I, myself, don't believe you or anyone else who is earning really good $$$ at MT. I don't really care if other MTs believe you or not. That's their problem. I do believe it can be done, but I want to know how I can do it, too. Honestly, I appreciate the advice and sharing of experiences. I'm not trying to come across as snotty or trollish.
My last (? ?maybe?) question for you is how long you have been on your particular accounts, and are they low, mid or high level accounts? I worked for both MQ and S, but I left for greener pastures because they kept bouncing me from difficult ESL account to another within a week of the last one.
I made more in the past year doing MT than every other year combined since I started several years ago. I'm not working a part-time job as backup any more either. I've also tripled my expander stats in the past month. I could be satisfied with that, but I believe the potential is there to do so much more.

System seemed nice at first but quickly turned out it wasn't. Someone else I know told me hers kept locking up on her. You don't have access to your Word entries and if you don't have a compatible shortcut expander, you have to start all over again in theirs. That stinks.
I found my QA to be very, very picky, over the top, ridiculous things. I don't think they want people to work for them because it seems you can't do anything right and I'm one who has been in this business a LONG time and no one ever complained about my work before.
I was very disappointed as I had heard good things about MDI-MD. Just goes to show what is right for one MT is not for another.

When I said I thought maybe she overindulged her children, I wasn't referring to where she takes them. I was referring to her comment about how she needs the time away from them, and how even her mother admitted she must be pulling her hair out trying to deal with them.
