It would be discrimination to care about nationality of person you are hiring.

People can't hide accents.  Can you hide your regional American accent?  For instance if you are from New York, can you hide that and speak in a Georgia/Southern accent?  What are you thinking?

Sorry meant discrimination and reverse-discrimination. My typing got ahead of my brain! nm
sorry for the typo but my heart was in the right place. :)
This is a fact, not picking on 1 nationality. No

It is NOT Oriental, no such nationality. It is of Asian descent.

    If it's discrimination - SM

why do companies hiring MTs as ICs/employees ask for that information, plus two forms of ID. In order to work in this country, you must prove you are a US citizen.

I have had several occasions when applying for work as an IC that I have been asked not only for two forms of ID but a birth certificate as well.

    That's age discrimination.
    .
    Discrimination
Anymore we all have some form of discrimination and I am sure it will only get worse.  I detest the fact that my husband and I have to sign for allergy meds Alavert-D or Claritin-D at the pharmacy and can only get one package at a time because some "low life druggies" are using these drugs and other compounds in this "free world" to make their so-called "goodies" so that they will have less brain cells than they already do.   How disgusting!  I know what they are doing is making it safer for us, but at the same time is a pain in the butt.
    you want reversed discrimination?

My husband is a student there. Each class is 5 weeks. He has had the same students in his class since the beginning. The whites are always working hard on projects and presentations. The blacks do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING but they are passing the classes. All of the whites who have them in their group have complained about this. The reason is, the students pass on the basis of groups rather than on an individual basis. If there are 3 whites and 1 black, the black does nothing but is considered part of the group and passes.

    THIS IS A FACT!!!

    major discrimination
My husband works for an agent with a major insurance company.  He is not the agent although he does have to have agent's licensing. We were told probably 15 years ago, that a white male would not be allowed to become an agent for many, many years due to people (this happened to be two women) who declared that they were discriminated against in this company.  So to compensate for discrimination this national company will not hire a "white male" for the appointed amount of time (which was a very extended time period of many, many years) unless that "white male walked on water."  That was their quote too.  I have heard (but have not verified this) that this same "discrimination" is going on in the medical field.  Therefore, you have all the ESL's who are able to get into med school but the American Caucasian is not chosen because you cannot discriminate.  My question is "Who is really being discriminated against?"  In my husband's company -- It is the Caucasian white male and I have a feeling that it is the Caucasian that is discriminated against in the medical field as well.
    Discrimination and ESLs
What do you think should be done about the inferior treatment that was heaped upon other groups of people for centuries? I believe your comments were mean spirited and insensitive, and if I were you, I would search my heart and think about what is in it. ESLs help to keep MTs busy and sharpen our listening skills. One of the worst accents I ever had to transcribe for was from the United Kingdom--where "proper" English is spoken. We now live in a global society, a diverse America, and there is no going back to how things were before. Thank God for that!
    Maybe a discrimination issue
They can tell your race and age that way, and for an employee application it is probably illegal. For an IC it's completely out of line since the I in IC stands for independent ie. none of their business. Would you ever make such a demand of a doctor, plumber, lawyer, etc.?
You have to have lots more with discrimination
charges. What you have said in your note are "looking up and down" and things you take as being discrimating, nothing really. Your changes of really a suit like this would be about a big 0. Insurance companies are to make money- what about all the homeowners being cancelled on the coast because hurricaines hitting other places and not theirs? It happens! A company can turn you down for any reasons - regardless of your passing their test- they don’t have to hire you. I have looked all over your original post and nothing here that would be a court case. Saying making room, asking if they could eat a cake? If it were chocolate and I was really in the mood, yes I could eat a couple of pieces and so? Most could, they just don’t say they could!
And how about that AGE DISCRIMINATION! Only hire

It is called 'reverse discrimination' and there
concerning this a few years ago.  I don't know what the outcome was.
There is no such thing as REVERSE discrimination.
Discrimination is discrimination regardless of which race /person is practicing it...

That is discrimination......there is a National Awareness Group
to fight against obesity discrimination. Look into that......I don't think, by law, insurance companies can do that, but I may be wrong.

Really, that is awful. It is a form of discrimination, just like not having a seat on an airplane to fit larger people. Eventually, all planes now are supposed to accommodate those with disabilities and I think obesity has been labeled a "Disabiilty' of late.

Check into it further, for your own benefit. Good luck and I wish you well.
Okay, I hate to be the one to scream law suit, but this reeks of discrimination.

I would seriously check out the descirmination laws in your state because that is exactly what this is....  Oh as a Large and Lovely girl myself, I am furious along with you.  Okay not that I would ever want to work for a company who had the moral ethics of a flea, but they need to learn that they cannot treat people like this.   Man the nerve..

I work for the person. I know. Very excellent person, personally and business-sense.
It is an INSULT to have QA hovering over seasoned MTs who know what they are doing. She trusts her MTs and again if there are questions there is one person, a trainer, who can answer them via phone, e-mail or instant message or you can send the whole report to them if you choose.
Point was is the person willing to make up for the slack of the person who types 1 job when there is

if that is all they WANT to type.   Is the person who wants to be a supervisor willing to make up for those people?

You have crap supervisors, editors and mts in the business like you have good ones.   Sadly, the really good ones of all of them are few and far between.

When you have a QA person that is picky and another QA person that is very lenient where does that
leave the MTs because some are getting a lenient reviewer and others are getting one that picks at everything. How do you reconcile that issue with the difference in QA mentality. Some people make out well and the other people could be just as good but dont. I wonder about that.

    Kinship care versus foster care/adoption
Having been placed in a position where I now have custody of my 3 YO granddaughter and going through the legal system, I sought an online network of relative caregivers for children. I would encourage you, especially since you are in Georgia, that if you take any children into foster care with the idea of adopting them, there is federal law that requires the state to take certain actions in a specific time frame. When a child is removed from it's bio parent(s), the state is required to investigate any possible relatives who can take the child before foster care is considered, but even before that, reunification with the parents is the priority. Once a child enters the system and is in the system for 15 out of any 22 months, the state is required to find permanent placement for the child.

The problem with this is that there are case workers who may favor a foster family and do not seek out relative care. I have a good friend in Georgia who had to fight all the way to the state level to get custody of her grandson after the child was placed from the hospital into a foster care home with the promise that the foster parents would be allowed to adopt. She has now adopted her grandson, but it was a long, hard battle to get the state to admit their own interests were placed above those of the child and/or family.

If you get a child placed through the state, please make certain there is not a relative who wants that child before you get your hopes up. The courts are now favoring return of children to relatives even after a child has spent years with a foster family who hoped to adopt them.

States get bonus federal funds by complying with the time lines and being able to close the case, so some states place children in foster care because it is easier than trying to locate relatives.

Didn't mean to go off on a tangent, but I can't imagine my sweet bella going to someone outside her family.
If it was a clinic, it might have been urgent care, but it was NOT acute care. sm
Acute care refers to work in an acute care setting, a hospital, doing at least History and Physicals, Discharge Summaries, Consultations, Surgery notes, Emergency Department notes, and much more, including GI procedures, Cardiology procedures, Neurological procedures, Pulmonary Function Studies.  It goes on and on and it means and acute care hospital setting, not a clinic.

One person's "custom" is another person's
"house arrest". I'd never go to the Middle East because of how they treat women. I don't agree with their laws or "justice" system. For example, the woman who was gang raped as punishment for the actions of her 12-year-old brother, a boy who wasn't even an adult. How's that for a "custom"? Let's not forget bride burning. Burqas.

Besides, foreigners don't follow our "customs" when they come to this country. Half of them don't even bother learning English. Instead, we're expected to pay for healthcare and foodstamps for illegals and print everything in Spanish.

I won't be oppressed or treated as a second class citizen, and I wouldn't treat others like that either. A "custom" is more like putting up a Christmas tree, not being abused based on your gender.
i'm sure it will vary from person to person.
I recently did the same thing and am loving it! The freedom from time clocks, the better company, make losing the benefits well worth it to me. You need to set up a plan to have $ set aside for taxes though. I should have done this years ago!
Wrong person. I'm not the person you were
any money.  You have a sucky attitude, a "poor me" attitude.  Get off your lazy whiny a$$ and work instead of complaining and you will make money.  I have one account at 10.5 cpl, two at 14 cpl and one at 15 cpl.  I make a lot of money, even on the 10.5 cpl.  But I'm not sitting around whining either.  And I didn't whine when I made $6 an hour.
    yes, they are hiring.....
and the pay is excellent, good benefits, but I understand the supervisor is a total nightmare. Lies, talks about employees to other employees, extremely intimidating and condescending, basically covers her behind by lying about employees...makes life miserable for her MTs. I believe it would be an excellent company to work for if it was not for this problem. But wanted some feed back on things others have heard.
Are they hiring or something? sm
What have you heard about the transcription supervisor. I have been looking around and don't want to get into something really bad.

Yes, take it. If you don't want it, let me know who it is that's hiring.

How does it compare with what you're making right now?

Do you know if they are hiring?
I'm also in the Memphis area.  Do you know if the hospital you work for is hiring?  I have years of experience. You can e-mail me if you'd like .
RE: Do you know if they are hiring
We had an opening that was advertised for a couple of months the first part of the year and was just filled with the person starting on 05/22/2006. Sorry.
    hiring
if you live in AR, MS or TN area yes they are.
Why are they hiring again? sm

It seems like ALL accounts are under control very, very well.  Especially on the weekends, the work usually runs out for all accounts!  Why do they keep doing this?  They have cut out their only benefit of direct deposit because they don't have the SE positions anymore.  Why are they doing this?

    anyone hiring?-sm

I am looking for IC work and have applied to many MT services in response to ads posted here.  So far, nothing.  Is the job market that competetive?  In the past, I have usually heard back right away but not so now.  This is frustrating.

    QED is hiring.
    x
    are you hiring?!
I just could not resist the temptation.  I am serious though :)
    hiring
Unfortunately, at the time I do not have current openings, hopefully that will change soon - I do however bring on mostly "newbies" to give them the opportunity to earn while they learn, and I am honest with them - my rates are not the norm and are lower - but they get the opportunity to add to their resume, and gain the experience without a non-paid internship. The experienced MTs I look for when I have the special projects that pay much better. I started as an MT and can appreciate the need for experience, as well as a respectable rate of pay. When I need individuals this is the first place I come. So all I can say is keep your eyes out for it. "Newbies" who apply whether hiring or not, are always kept on file for "next-up" hiring.

BUT I ONLY HIRE US CITIZENS, AND I DO NOT OUTSOURCE. I do not affiliate with offshore companies, do not want any contacts, e-mails, etc. I do just fine with the American "newbie" or experienced MT.

I will however, take every opportunity afforded to me, to bring the work back to the US, by showing their clients that American is the way to go, by offering information on the pros of the American MT and the cons of offshore companies. Even if it means I offer a low rate to sign those US dictators who currently use offshore companies or use companies who send work overseas - and believe me, eventually they all come back, sooner or later, I just want it to be sooner.
I just don't think if you are hiring ICs

Time and time again I see this as a complaint by MTSOs that an IC is not doing the work, but an IC does have a choice to refuse a job.  If I had to sub my clients, then I would find someone who would do overflow or could fill-in when my regular ICs cannot commit.  I would also have a work pool and not assign work.  As an IC, you cannot then expect the MTSO to always have work for you either.

I work as an IC with my own clients, but I also work from a pool with an online company.  It works very well for me.  I either can work and take the work or if I can't, then someone else is trained to do the work.  No harm done for either one of us.

The bottom line is in assigning work to an IC that has the choice to not work if he/she so desires.  If you are looking for a commitment, then you may be better off hiring employees that will need to be accountable.

    on hiring -- sm
If you hire employees, you do not necessarily have to become *incorporated*, but you will have to get a tax ID number, which is not difficult, and prepare 1099 forms for your employee, so they can report their income at the end of the year. You do not necessarily have to open a commercial bank account, but it would be easier for you to keep track of your expenses and payments to employee. Whatever you have paid your employee over the year, you can also deduct from your taxes, as well. You can become incorporated if you so choose, as it is SUPPOSED to save you tax dollars, but I have yet to figure that part out. Hiring an accountant may be in your best interest, as well, unless you have the time to keep very good financial records of all of this. good luck to you.
    are they hiring?
do you know if the full time job you have at 12 cpl is hiring at this time? or even the part time job? you can e-mail me if you like. thanks
    Not hiring?
Have you guys tried calling these companies to see what their reply is? I would be interested to see what they say.  Also, go on the job boards and try maybe a small company that needs help versus a large national.  You might have better luck there! Good luck!
Do you know if the p/t is hiring?
That would be great to just work whenever.
    anyone hiring new mt
I worked for a company for six months transcribing Orthopedic and some Radiology. I worked about 50 hours a week. my biggest paycheck was $368 for the entire month. The QA person kept telling me that I was doing great for a newbie and that everyone goes through this and I will be making good money soon, I just have to be patient and stick with it. I did not have any medical spellchecker or Instant Text, (which I do now) and what was also difficult was I was taught the AHDI Book of Style and they did not follow that so she kept telling me it was wrong. I really enjoyed the Radiology, wish I had more experience. Do you know of any companies that would be willing to take a chance on a newbie, mentor me along the way, I am willing to train on their platform for nothing just to get my foot in the door. If so, catglad@att.net
    they are hiring but..
worksource Florida's website doesn't allow your application to go through, so who knows what is up with that.
    Spheris is hiring PT
Spheris is hiring for PT and I am really happy there. I've been there about a year now, and I'm about to switch from FT to PT to spend more time with the kids.

If you want me to pass on your resume directly, I'd be happy to, if you send it to me at carasoffice@yahoo.com.

Good luck! Oh, and they are hiring for all shifts - acute and clinic.
Any hiring - ER only - or clinic maybe?
Need a new job!  But have only done ER for 12 years.  Old single mom with small children and no time to learn new tricks right now LOL!  Anyone know of a good company - at-home - that hires for ER only (not Spheris) or clinic work?  Would appreciate as much input as you are willing to give.  Would especially be pleased if they supply equipment!  Thanks!
    Is your employer hiring?
    Thanks for the tips.
So are you hiring or not? I'd like to apply
and see if I have what it takes to work for you.
