Joint Pain in Arms/Hands/Shoulders

Posted By: A Not So Funny Story on 2005-12-17
In Reply to: It hurts to pick up a cup of coffee. I do not play tennis - Tennis elbow?

I am just going to relate this story for what it is worth to someone else.

In 2001 I began having problems with my left hand, arm and shoulder. Orthopedist thought it may be the beginnings of carpal tunnel but EMG was neg. It was bad enuf that at times I couldn't pick stuff up and it hurt to type. It waned and waxed. A few years later I began having problems with my hands and the joints in my fingers hurting, along with left shoulder pain. My hands were so bad I could not open a jar at times. Eventually I went to a rheumatologist who told me that I had no visible signs of severe arthritis. All MDs, incl. orthopedist and rheumatologist recommended trying Celebrex, aspirin, etc. The regular stuff. I was resigned to early arthritis like my mother.

Well, one day in late 2004/early 2005 I decide to see a chiropractor for my shoulder because I'd had electro therapy for an injury years ago and thought maybe this would help. I had some adjustments and electro therapy on my shoulder.

I want to tell you -- ALL and EVERY pain in my fingers left and never came back. ALL and EVERY pain running from shoulder to hand stopped. It had to have been some sort of pinched nerve.

Not a single MD had even suggested seeing a chiropractor. And had it not been for my shoulder and my past experience, I never would have thought of it and would still be suffering, possibly with even further damage to the nerve by now.

Does NE1 have severe joint pain while working?

I have been working as an MT for only 4 years, and I am only 23 years old, but lately I have had severe finger, wrist, elbow, shoulder, and neck joint pains, especially when working.  I am just wondering if this is normal.

Thanks for the help.

For me, shoulders and hips.
.
Can I cry on your shoulders this morning?

My husband is gone until spring with his company about 5 hours away from home. Not too far but far enough where I can't see him often. In fact, he left Jan1 and haven't seen in since. No big deal - 14 days.

He is staying in a nice hotel with company car, perks, etc. He doesn't have a boss, but they have him working 13 days straight and then one day off and he is working his tail off. He calls me every night, and we trust each other 110%. We have 2 boys - 2 and 4.  I am basically going nuts over here with them but that is a different subject.

So I got this grand idea last night that in the morning (today) I would drive and come see him, he has tomorrow off, and then I would leave early Tues to come back home. No big deal. The kids could watch DVD, etc. I am very, very independent and can do this with my eyes closed.  I've always traveled by myself, etc., because of my background, and he's the type who is ultra-conservative, worried about traffic, safety, etc. Which is irritating because yes, there are risks involved when traveling. I have a new vehicle, great tires, great gas mileage, a cell phone, money, and street smarts. What the h*** is the big deal? He calls me this morning when the boys and I are ready to go to tell me, "don't come."

Do you know how upset I am? I am very upset.  He won't be back until April or so and he doesn't want to see us????? He can't leave the area, so we have to come and see him.  Yet, because he's so darn cautious and conservative (always has been that way), we have to suffer by staying here and basically I have done nothing but work extra and take care of 2 kids who really miss their dad.

I am upset.  I am all packed up and ready to go with no where to go.  He did say I could possibly come down later, as in a few weeks later, when the area is not as congested (he's near the gulf of Mexico where hurricane hit, but in a city that was not devastated so there are hotels and restaurants, etc). But to be honest, I'm not going to waste my time or energy on him if he doesn't want to see us. I am not going through this again in 2 weeks. He can just forget it.

I'm usually very mature, but I am so pissed right now and I don't really care. He doesn't want to see us today, then I guess he and his ultra safety self can wait until he comes home in April.

Mine was in the shoulders

It took several doctors to find it, but my issues were caused by tension where the neck meets the shoulders. Tilt your head to the left and pull it down with your left hand, then repeat on the right. Tilt your head forward and pull down. Tilt your head forward at an angle and pull down, repeat with other side. I had pain, loss of sensation, and locking of my muscles because of tightness right there. Not sure if that's your situation, but just in case!

Sore neck and shoulders
This is the first year that I have had this type of pain. There is nothing that will relieve it and if there is the slightest movement of my computer screen or anything out of the ordinary, there it goes. I am afraid surgery is in my future. I do take breaks and your schedule sounds good. Thanks for the information....

Thank you. I do feel the weight of the world on my shoulders...sm
And I am so afraid that I am going to "break" one day.  He is a good person.  Ever since he has been off of work and considered disabled everything has changed.  He used to work 50+ hours a week, he took the effort for himself, etc.  I know that I am not perfect either, but seeing a grown man like this breaks my heart day after day after day.  He is wonderful with our son though.  I would love to find a way to get that "fire" back again, but I know I won't be able to unless he makes a little more effort to just do SIMPLE things...and another problem is we NEVER have any help with our son - no time to get away, even just out for dinner, by ourselves.  It is just hard and any advice I will take.  Thank you for your advice...
I feel your pain. If at teaching hospital, great pain. SM
Some doctors do give standard discharge summaries, so you could just make copy and then pull it up. It is not easy, especially when they give 20 lines of lab results.
joint/join
Ummmm - that was join, not joint.
Joint tenderness is another possibility.
dd
I sent an email to Joint Commission
I don't know why they don't crack down on these docs-- especially these horrible foreigners. I am an MT, not an interpreter for the UN. If I wanted that job, I would move to New York. What it is going to take is some horrendous lawsuit and I hope it happens soon. If these people can't speak English clearly enough to be understood, then they need to have someone dictate for them who can-- plain and simple.

accrediation to hospitals. Without them they do not get Medicare payments, Medicaid payments, etc.

Actually, the BOS follows the Joint Commission not vice versa. The BOS...
adopted the Joint Commissions recommendations for dangerous abbreviations.  As for the rest of the BOS, I've worked for a number of hospitals in the office over the years and not one manager that I have encountered don't give a hoot about the BOS.
Are you able to rest your arms?
Maybe arm rests? They helped me for a while until I started getting carpal tunnel symptoms from not having my hands properly positioned (due to resting my elbows on my arm rests). Needless to say, got rid of the arm rests and after a while, the pain just went away (both in wrists/hands and shoulders/back). However, I do have quite severe knots if you ever feel my shoulders :)
Yes it is, and we do file a joint return BUT you can offset your income - sm
on the schedule C with your expenses (mine are ~$2K) and lower the amount you pay taxes on. This is in addition to your Sch. A/B or the standard deduction.
That is interesting. The hospital I work goes by the joint commission
and not so much the AAMT BOS but the commission that gives the governs the hospital.  The doctors are not allowed to write q. as an abbreviation when writing orders and must write out word "every" or they are called on it.  The transcriptionists have to follow that rule also.  This is a major teaching hospital.  I think the AAMT follows the joint commission also when they makes their rules.  But I also understand that you do what the client wants first and if they do not answer to the Joint Commission rules then the other form would be the correct way to go.
isn't the forbidden words from joint commision of hospitals, not BOS? nm

The Joint Commission's Dangerous Abbreviation List... SM

applies to written entries on a patient's chart, i.e. nurses' notes, doctor's orders, etc.  For some insane reason, someone somewhere decided to apply it to transcription as well which is just silly.  I work for a facility that has decided not to force transcription to strictly adhere to the dangerous abbreviation list and Joint Commission has not counted it against them in the last three audits.

I will say most MTs where I work do not use qhs, qac or qd.  We expand those out because WE (the transcription department) decided that we should for clarification purposes.

How many of you transcribe with your arms on armrests? nm

Need some help. Weird stuff on my son's arms. sm

I'm wondering if anyone has seen this before.  It's just too weird and I have worked for doctors (mostly general practice) for 20 years.

My son is 20 and he has these really weird looking discolorations on his left arm. They are flat, pink, scattered and in many different dimensions from the size of a pencil eraser to an actual small squares. They are not raised, don't itch or hurt, but they've just been appearing slowly and are now covering more areas of the arm.

He works in a kitchen at a nursing home, but the spots appeared before he got this job. The nursing home said he needs to have this checked out before he comes back to work on Tuesday (he has tomorrow off).

Rundown on his health history is that he is asthmatic (not enough to be on meds)and coughs a lot. Unfortunately, he is a very heavy smoker and I've been trying to get him to stop. He has cut down, because he's living at our house now and smoking is outside. He doesn't cough as much, but still coughs a lot.

He is 6 foot 4 inches and weighs 135 lbs. He eats constantly and never gains weight, but he's been like this since he was in grade school. He has a confirmed diagnosis of thalassemia and also has symptoms of what may be Marfan's Syndrome.

One last thing is that he had months of unprotected sex with a girl he was in love with until he found out that he wasn't the only one she was sleeping with, so he left her and moved back home for the time being.

Any ideas would be helpful.

weird stuff on son's arms
I think you need to go to the doctor with your son in the morning -- mostly because you will understand more about what the doctor is saying (because you've been typing this stuff for so long), you'll be able to ask the right questions and be sure it's not passed off as dermatitis which it most certainly is not.
Good luck - let us know.
pityriasis rosea would not be on arms
It only goes all over your trunk. I had it on front and back.

Doctors are always making words up...sigh.
I've always been partial to a chair with arms
and I'm not sure why.  I don't know where people put their arms with no arm rests.  Would that cause shoulder tiredness?  I don't have an idea for a new one, but I sure need one!

I like a chair with arms, deep seat and high back (sm)
so I bought a leather chair from Costco about a year ago and have never regretted it.  Think it is made by Lane.  It was a little expensive but since I'm in it for hours a day - sometimes 12 - I figure it was an important investment... plus it is so good looking we often wheel into other parts of house when we need extra seating :)
I wedge a small pillow between me and the armrest on each side for my arms to rest on.

With short arms, I need chair with shallow seat, good back support and high back. Want arm rests

LINE!!

I am currently getting paid per report on one acct and per line on another and hands down...per line always adds up to more money.

From years of experience, there is at least one MT that will tend to skip the longer reports when being paid by the report - if this weren't the case then it might be about the same but just from years of experience it seems there is always one bad apple in the bunch that spoils it for the rest.

When being paid per line, at least when they skip reports they don't want to do - it just means more lines for me and more $$$.

Hands

Does anyone else have problems with puffy, stiff hands during the hot weather.  Never bother me in the cold but this heat kills my speed and accuracy.  Anybody have any home remedies that helps.   I feel like the Pillsbury Dough boy with regards to my fingers and hands.   Please don't tell me it is old age setting in.

Thanks.

Hands
I tried Glucosamine with chondtritin and it did not help with any of my aches.  But then I was told by a chiropractor to try MSM Glucosamine after I was T-boned and had terrible hip and buttock problems.  Tried 2 to 4 did not help much and gave up -- I give up easily.  But the past several months tried again at 2 twice a day and after a couple of days it helped not only with my hip but my hands have not ached all summer/fall now.  Really helped and I now take only 2 or so and not every day.  Vioxx also helped but they took that off the market.  But this helps tremendously.  But you should check to see if by chance you have Raynaud's or something in your hands or low thyroid.    Good luck.
is there something i can use to help my hands....
to be smoother. i have been using baby powder, but have already went through 2 keyboards...is there a transcription something i can buy? also, how about my hands freezing....what can i do about that?
Female..hands down !

I swear, every account I've ever worked had one problem dictator.. always female !  One REFUSED to use macros, even on normals.. and she would always make sure she made every report unique, so that we couldn't sneak away with using a macro for her.  Another one spoke a hundred miles a minute.  I remember my first day with her.  She said something several times in her reports and I went crazy trying to figure it out.... lumbar spine ??  supine ??  Turns out she was saying "skip a line" !!

Obviously not for his face, but maybe his hands?

Hands On Transcription
Does anyone have any info on Hands On Transcription?  They say they pay daily.  Thanks
not sure what you are looking for exactly but for my aching hands sm
i have a mixture i make. it leaves your hands for soft and smooth and feels great too. take table salt and mix in essential oil. i love to use peppermint as it leaves a "cooling sensation" afterwards. just mix it until the salt is moist, not drowned. rub it is (preferably over the sink as it will make a mess), rub deeply or massage and it feels great. then rinse hands with warm water and it leaves your hands so soft and feeling great as the oil is left on your hands.
hang on with both hands - and don't let go

some swear by, but I think my hands are too big.

Voc. Rehab. let me try one out when they were helping me get my ergonomics together, and I knew right away I could never get used to it.  I have rather "fat" fingers, though, and I think that was part of it.  If you have longer, thinner fingers, it might be right up your alley.

You can rent one (which can then be applied to the purchase price, I think?) for awhile from this site to try it out, rather than outright buying it.
