Does anyone pay someone to clean their house? sm
If so how often do they clean for you and how much do you pay them?   What size home do you have? i.e. 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room, dining room and kitchen?
I need help to keep my house clean. What should I pay?
Am thinking 10.00/hr cash of course. Is that too low? My house just needs maintenance (floors, dusting, countertops).
No hubby. Clean my house when I feel like it, for me. I like it this way.

I clean my house every other wednesday for the cleaning lady :)

starting new MT business
I have been at this now for 35 years and have become increasingly discouraged over the last 8 years. This is a very changing business. You will work extremely long hours, get few rewards, get accounts, lose accounts, have no stability and ultimately be disappointed. It is not a business for the faint of heart. Unfortunately my income has decreased or stabilized since 1996 and I am now making what I was then. Unfortunately the cost of living has not remained the same. I was rolling along doing quite well and satisfied previous to 8 years ago when suddenly my accounts were lost to outsourcing, mega corporations, etc. This used to be a profession that commanded respect for the years we put in to be the best.

If you are not familiar with computers, you will be lost in this business as most transcription is run digitally and everything done with computers, over the Internet, using various programs, FTP sites, etc.

I would like to offer encouragement, but I have taken to discouraging anyone who thinks this is a good business to pursue and one that has long term security.

Good Luck!
Sorry, I mean I am starting my own business...
I was on the phone while I was typing that message.
Starting a business
I currently work for a small service and feel that taking 25% of my gross pay and charging me for minutes used by doctors (gearplayer) is getting to be too much.  I want to know how many of you have gotten your own accounts and how you went about doing it.  I have 3 years experience with transcription and currently work for 2 offices (ophthalmology and family practice).
Starting a business

I've been in your shoes, though many years ago, and I had 12 years experience before I had the guts to go solo.

There is so much more that you need to know beyond the specialty you'll be transcribing.  You need to know how to run a small business.  Things like zoning laws - I kid you not; there are still places where it is technically illegal to work in your home.  Do you need a license?  Do you know the tax implications?  Do you know the insurance/liability implications?  Are you adequately capitalized?  You'll need backup equipment, supplies and something to live on until you start getting paid.  Banks don't like to lend to small transcription services because they so often fail.  As another poster said, contracts are difficult, if not impossible to enforce.  Are you aware of regulatory issues like HIPAA (especially for the speciality you have chosen)?  Are you technically savvy?  Not all offices use tapes with pick-up/delivery of work anymore.  Do you know what you need to make to live?  Sure you could undercut the competition, but can you live on what you'd make?  Do you have someone you trust to cover for you if you are sick, the power goes out or you just want a day off?  There's so much more, but I'm sure you are getting the picture.

Look for a business college, junior college/city college or regional state university in your area that offers classes for small business owners.  Is there an office of the Small Business Administration (government agency - your tax dollars at work) or SCORE (Service Core of Retired Executives) in your area that offers classes?

You are looking to do a tough thing.  I'm not sure I'd want to do it again, but I don't regret the years I did it.  Give it some more thought.  Best of luck to you.

What equipment for starting own business?

MY SHRINK KEEPS ASKING ME IF I HAVE TRIED GETTING MY OWN ACCOUNTS VERSUS WORKING FOR A NATIONAL....(we are working on how to better handle life stressors).  (MQ?)  Anyway, I always tell him, yes, I have thought about it and I do know of two MTSOs as aquaintances.  I told him I am getting closer and closer to sending letters out to these MTSOs letting them know I am working as an MT and ask if they have any overflow work, to keep me in mind.  I told him I thought that would be the first step as I don't have a clue as to what equipment they use and how you go about the whole deal versus what I am doing now (wav files over internet).

I am sure some of you who are or were MTSOs could clue me in as to how it is done, equipment wise, and what is involved.  I already know about the tax issues as we have had two small businesses previously. Is it still done with tapes that you pick up and what kind of equipment for that, or can it be done over the internet as per the nationals?

Thanks,

In the dark here.

starting a transcription business
I would like to start a medical transcripton business.  Does anyone have any advice?  I would like to get a Radiology accounts with a hospitals.
Need advice on starting my own business
I have been struggling for the past year to get my paycheck.  I am so fed up with having to constantly hound the "company" that I work for that I might as well get my own accounts if I have to do so much footwork.  I would love any advice on how to start up my own accounts.  I'd love to receive all my files off the internet.  Any advice...... Please.
starting business/ go to convention

Need some advice, please.  I am starting a small company and I want to market myself to be able to take overflow work from larger companies (or hospitals/clinics/medical centers) to give and send out to my group of MTs and QAs.  I do not want the hassle of trying to approach the large hospitals, clinics, medical centers, themselves and I do not have the capital to purchase my own dictation system or program.

I was thinking of going to the MT conventions and networking there but was not sure who/what companies attend these conventions.  Does anyone have any ideas or can anyone point me in the right direction?  I would appreciate any advice anyone could give to me.  TIA

Starting a business now: Dumb idea?
With so many huge transcription companies to compete with, is it ridiculous to even consider going into business for myself at this point?  Who in the world would go with the small guy rather than the bigwigs?  I really would love to do it but am just wondering if my timing is way too late here.
How about starting a virtual assistant business? (sm)

You could do all kinds of stuff (do a Google search under virtual assistant, there are some webpages that explain stuff).  U-Haul I believe also hires people to do phone customer service from home.  If you look on guru . com they have people who advertise for odd jobs and lots of them are virtual assistant kind of stuff.

Just some ideas.  You could also do daycare, pampered chef, that kind of stuff.  :)

I need some advice on starting my own small side business. sm

First of all, I have worked for several nationals in the past few years, and equipment has always been provided.  I currently have a f/t position with a national that I use my own personal computer for, they just put their software on it.  I had what I needed already, as far as foot pedal, Expander program, etc.

I have just been sort of rolling ideas around in my head about possibly starting up something small perhaps on a p.r.n. basis just to bring in a little extra income.  As I am still just mulling this around in my mind, my questions are:  How do I go about getting started? Do I try to purchase equipment first, or start out using tapes? I am worried about spending the money and not having any takers, so I am thinking, I should send out some sort of letters first; but, without having the equipment already, how do I tell them I plan on doing their transcription.  Maybe mention tapes first, and tell them I have plans to go digital after I get up and running? These are all just things I wonder about.  If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to email me with any advice.

I have been an MT for 16+ years, but as I said, I have always had all of the stuff provided for me and just don't know how to start.

Thanks in Advance!

stay home or go in house....

I got offered a job in a small neurology office starting at $17/hr with a raise in a few months.  No working weekends or holidays and lots of vacation days.  Low stress.

I currently work at home for a pretty decent company with a pretty decent line rate, but am starting to feel pressure to produce more...my average pay at home is between $13 and $15 an hour.  It also adds stress when there is little to know work available and I am having to alter my schedule to "make up" time.

So, I would be making a bit more money, but I will have to have child care for the summers and for after school, so I don't know if it is worth it.

Can someone give me some insight as to whether they were faced with this decision...what they decided and why?  I would really appreciate it.

Stay home or go in-house?

Help! What do I do?  I currently work for a pretty good national company and I get to stay home and work in my PJs, but then... we ran out of work for a few days and I panicked.  I applied for an in-house position doing radiology, which I have never done before.  I am fairly certain they will offer me the position to work 24 to 32 hours, with many more hours if I want them.  It pays about 18.50 per hour during the week and 19.39 on the weekends, which I will work one weekend day.  So now what???

Do I give up the comfort of my home for a guaranteed paycheck and work in a cubical typing radiology notes for 8 hours a day?  UGH!  Tough to have such choices in this economy.

Any insight or thoughts on this?  I do have young children, but they spend a lot of time at grandma's while I work anyway.

When I took a business trip one time, I came home to an immaculate house.
Then during the next few weeks, I couldn't find certain things like clothes, dishes, and items I kept on the counters. DH had decided to put all the dirty stuff out in the garage where the babysitter couldn't see it because he was embarrased by the mess he and the kids had made. There was mold and mildew on everything because he taped it inside boxes or stuffed it inside coolers, and he forgot to tell me about it.
Before I started my own business, worked in a hospital in-house with taxes taken out & then went hom
was getting with shift differential 23.80 when I left. Your pay seems extremely low, you could make more as an IC seriously.
That daggon Zatarains put Oak Grove Smoke house out of business, the rats!
I can only find 1 place for Oak Grove Smoke House on the 'net now, and their mixes are WAY better and more original (just editorial opinion, there). All the other 'net entries are some lawsuit Zatarains brought. Blrch.
Unfortunately it is legal..so yes it is business and they will continue with bad business practices

I made my business your business by posting and...
I totally respect everyone's opinions. It is easier for others on the outside looking in. That's why I pushed the "post reply" button yesterday. I trust my fellow MTs and I know the more I read from you all, the more confident I am becoming. I just need that final push, not from him though. I also wanted to let you all know that the physical abuse while I was pregnant was documented by my doctor and the hospital. I only wish I had known then that it is a felony to abuse a pregnant woman. I also photographed my face from a couple of weeks ago and told several people in my circle. I had such high hopes for us. Now...not so much. I'm not saying that I won't try to get him to church, but I realize that God can only do so much for someone who isn't listening. j

clean
I already thought of that, but I hear they aren't worth crap.
sometimes have to clean
you know you can take the ball out and clean it? If not, turn mouse over and twist plate direction of arrows.
have you tried the can of air to clean it?
this is a post I just read:

My Microsoft Digital Media Pro keyboard is quite nice. The keys are all attached to the front of the keyboard. Just unscrew the back and the front lifts up with all the keys. On the bottom part of the keyboard remains the rubber/silicon and circuit board, which can be sprayed off. I then submerge the top keyboard in scalding hot soapy water to clean it.
Nothing to do with MT but does anyone have any ideas on how to clean - sm
a linoleum bathroom floor? All my bathroom throw rugs (4-large bathroom) have left yellow stains under where each lies.  I presume the rubber somehow reacted with the floor.  This has happened in both my bathrooms but much worse it the one which has a window.  Short of replacing the floor does anyone have any ideas? TIA.
Let's clean up our board........sm
While it is certainly everyone's right to "agree to disagree", the mud slinging that unfortunately takes place here is usually not started by anyone who truly wants to get a point across.  I myself have gotten into some very heated discussions over issues related to our profession. But I've never stooped so low as to attack anyone personally.. and the minute the discussion starts getting ugly, I'm outta there!  There are people on these boards with no other purpose than to see where they can start trouble.  They're just looking for attention and the only way to get rid of them is to totally ignore them.
Help! How do I clean out my cache?

I have been unable to access, since last night, a website (Weightwatchers.com) and/or its forums that I go to regularly. I have friends that are able to access it so I am wondering what I might need to do to "clean things out" on my computer in order to get back to the web site.

TIA.

Any way to clean up a BAD dss file??

Doctor dictated despite the fact that he had a tremendously BAD phone connection.  I can only hear a word every few sentences, the rest is loud humming and static.  I have a KOSS equalizer that didn't help at all.  Anyone know of a miracle program or something that might salvage this recording, as he doesn't want to re-dictate it?  THanks!

Always a dishcloth and use a clean

one every time.  Right now we are without a dishwasher.  I use a dishcloth for dishes and a dishcloth to clean countertops/table  - or will sometimes use a paper towel.  I also use bleach or an antibacterial cleaner about once a week.

Never, ever use a sponge.  If you use a scrub brush need to at least dip in bleach every day that you use it.

I can't remember where it was, but in the last couple of months I saw a show like 60 minutes and it was talking about how dirty a kitchen is, especially in comparison to your bathroom, and it was enough to make you sick, in more ways than one.

I third the Mr. Clean Eraser. nm

clean environment
Everyone is making great points and I appreciate your comments, truly!  But, paying a few more thousand dollars for a hybrid car isn't really a big deal to me, as I know I am doing my part to help reduce the dependency on foreign oil and also these hybrids reportedly are so much better for the environment as far as pollution.  That is really the reason why I'm leaning towards it, as well as the increased miles per gallon.  Thanks for your opinions!
You have to clean 3 rollers...sm

or you can do what I did, I waited until the Logitech mouse (originally was about $70) came down in price to about $20 or $24 and bought one.  You never have to clean them inside and you don't need a mousepad.

I used to clean houses when I sm
needed extra money.  We got behind in bills a couple of times due to illnesses, surgeries, etc. I put an ad in the paper and picked up several jobs that way.
How do you all clean your keyboards? SM

I eat and drink at my desk, as I'm sure most of us do.  And of course, crumbs fall, drinks drip, and there's the dust.  I was just wondering what everybody else uses to clean their keyboards.  I have tried canned air to blow out the crumbs and then use alcohol on the surface and stick Q-Tips down in all the crevices and between the keys.  Just wondered if there was some miracle solution that would make it easier and less time consuming?

Put them on probation and tell them to clean up their act or they
are gone. Too many MTs are looking for work right now to put up with people who don't/won't do their job.
How do I clean my keyboard?

My keyboard is getting nasty down under the keys.  The vacuum used to do the trick, but now some dust, crumbs, and Lord knows what else remains in the bottom of the tray.  If I unscrew the screws on the bottom, will that allow me to lift the top off?

I figured I would ask, because I often do things like that only to end up with the wrong part coming off or nothing at all happens.  (I hate that.)

Any tips appreciated!

I just clean mine with...
a good upside-down shake, a clean paintbrush for between the keys, and a soft cloth with a little gentle cleaner of water with a splash of vinegar and hydrogen peroxide for the top.
For a business ad?! A business that deals
''Transcriptsis'' x2

''with good track record''

''serve our clients of all sizes'' (I know what they mean, but I just think the wording is funny)

''strive to achieve highest possible quality'' (once again, they never met an 'article' that they didn't hate)

''all departments including H&P...'' (or a comma, for that matter)

Heck, I can't even keep my sink clean

And I hate shoes. I guess I need to be more dedicated. Just working on my hot spots every day would do me a world of good.

And then they'll have clean up poopoo
nm
Do you have a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser???
I don't know if it will work, because thank God neither one of mine have ever done that before, but it does clean a lot of stuff, from walls, to white sneaker, the bathtub.
Do the first account first, clean it out, then move on
x
I do that, too. I don't like to shower first to power clean
the house because then you get all sweaty with cleaning chemicals all over.
Mr. Clean Magic Eraser - use dry nm
nm
I'm with you. I hate to clean and really don't have time (sm)

I work 7 days a week and used to have a gal come in twice a week until the place got back to normal....then once every 2 weeks after that. Had to pay $10/hour, so had to work twice as hard to pay her.

Finally had to let her go in September last year and the place hasn't been the same since.  Trying to get my savings back up so I can hire somebody again.  I have no closets but 1 in the whole house and no place to hang coats, etc.

I cleaned really good last week and was surprised it only took me 3 hours, but that's 3 hours I could be making money to save up to hire somebody. Everyone in this area are private people. There are no services like Merry Maids.

I second the Mr. Clean eraser motion
My son recently got black permanent marker on my wooden kitchen table . . . amazingly, the magic eraser rubbed it right off. I have used them for textured surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom before also and they "work like magic".
what do you use to clean computer screen?
can i use lens cleaner like for my eyeglasses? alcohol?   thanks.
Wiping the computer clean
Hi, I have a computer that is about 5-6 years old, and I no longer use it.  I want to clean all my data off it so that if it ends up in someone else's hands none of my confidential MT work is on it.  When I bought the computer, my hard drive had two partitions; one for the restore to factory settings and one for my use.  I took my computer with me to an MT company for training, and they wiped out my partition that had my restore information on it.  I hadn't made a copy on a disk, so I no longer have that as an option.  Can I simply reformat my hard drive to wipe everything clean?  I don't really care if that wipes out the OS too.
