What do American MTs expect from transcription association like the AAMT? SM

I posted this question over on the company board as there was some talk abou the AAMT changing its name and how they dropped "American" from their name because they basically have opened up memberships to the whole world and then something was said about American MTs needing an organization that represented us.

So my questions would be what kind of benefits or services do you expect from an MT organization or association?  Would change any of the BOS rules or would you want a new style guide to be created?  Would you want the association to function as a union, insuring job security and fair pay?  Would you be willing to pay union dues or membership fee and if so what do you think is a reasonable fee?  What about certification - should it be offered or is it unecessary?

I've felt for some time that we (MTs) weren't adequately represented by the AAMT and there was a need for an organization that could effectively stabilize the MT industry especially in recent years with outsourcing work overseas and taking jobs away from American MTs.

They do not represent the rights of the individual Transcriptionist it seems but rather promote their organization in order to continue to exist and to continue to survive, they seem to think they should stand up for the service owner and not the MT.

You'd think they would be giving information on how to get more production since our wages have stood still and unless speed engines are used, we make much less than what one would think.

Looks like your QA is going by the AAMT Book of Style

AAMT Book of Style...

What changed in the newer version that is of great importance?  Can anyone tell me briefly?  Thanks!

AAMT Book of Style CD
Bought both, seems easier to find things in the book, wish I didn't waste the money on the CD
It is the AAMT Book of Style
Supposedly it is the standard; however, usually client preference becomes the standard when you have your own accounts.  The client rules in this regard.  Some of the clients do not know what BOS even is to dictate that way.
Do you have the AAMT Book of Style Second edition?

AAMT Book of Style question...
I am looking for the AAMT Book of Style.  I was trying to get a used on on Ebay, then came across a CD for much less.  Does anyone know if the CD has everything the book has?  Also, are there search features on the CD?  I am thinking a CD would be even faster if I had to reference something, if all the info is on there.  Thanks in advance!
Crepitance per AAMT Book of Style
According to AAMT book of style crepitance because of its frequent usage is an allowable term even though it is not in the dictionaries.
AAMT Book of Style-2nd Edition

I am a new MT, I was wondering if anyone was selling any "AAMT Book of Style-2nd Edition" or the CD Rom version? Also looking for a current Medical Spellchecker?

Please let me know

You need to get a copy of the AAMT Book of Style II and see how it's done now. Try eBay. nm

AAMT Book of Style 2 is a great investment
for a student MT. While some companies may not use it, most certainly do for their initial testing on hiring - including the grammar sections. Go for it! One can never have too many books!
What is the difference between the 1st and 2nd editions of the AAMT Book of Style? (sm)

I presently have the first edition which I bought years and years ago and am considering investing in the 2nd edition; however, I hate to spend that much money on basically the same book.  Is it worth the new investment to upgrade?  What kinds of changes are in the new version and are there many of them?  TIA

2008 AAMT Book Of Style? Is it worth getting?

Have you Heard of American Transcription Association? Check it out!

I am copying this from the MQ board and feel it is so important that it belongs here!  We may have some new muscle here.  At least there is hope....

"I found out about this by reading an MT blog written by Jay Vance, CMT. This newly formed organization is addressing off-shoring of transcription work. Membership dues for the first 500 members is free. American Transcription Association. Check it out here:

AAMT's new name: Association for Integrity of

They will accept a broader sector healthcare professionals involved in healthcare documentation.

Hmmmm.

Someone should call AAMT out on its association with (sm)
Indian transcription. Also, maybe medical facilities should be provided with lists of MTSOs - those that offshore, and those that don't, and the reasons why they shouldn't send their business to the latter. Might at least open their eyes. If someone's personal medical record goes offshore I think whoever in a medical organization that allows it should be held accountable and liable in case something happens to adversely affect the patient's identity, credit, or healthcare. Food for thought for the Fat-Cats.
Indian Association for Medical Transcription?
I hear you. It is to bizarre to see that the only way AAMT can continue to exist is because of their financial support from the Indians - HELL-O - last I checked wasn't it American Association for Medical Transcription? Ok, let's see, maybe if I transcribe work for France I can get certified there even though I live here, no I think the Australia sound better, oh wait... I like Thailand, maybe I can .....
National Association for Medical Transcription
or international...something like that. I think they should pack up the whole thing and move to those places they are promoting so much.
Book of Style

The cardiologists I have worked with over the years preferred Roman Numerals for murmurs, however, all that changed when The Book of Style came out indicating to record murmurs with numbers not Roman Numerals.  I even had a few cardiologists state, put the murmur in Roman Numerals.

The AMA has their own book of style...
and they DO NOT endorse the BOS.
Book of Style
Sometimes this stuff just gets crazy.  I do not yet have the 2nd Book of Style, but does it really matter that much?  Two months or 2 months -- it does not change the meaning of the report.  I agree with BOS I think it should be spelled out at the beginning of any sentence but really!  Lord knows we type for pennies as it is.  Now we are expected to purchase yet another book and/or CD and retrain our brains.  Some days it just does not seem worth it.  Could any MT with the 2nd Book of Style please tell me if the rule changed for when and when not to hyphen well-nourished, well-developed?  It is currently covered on page 79 of the first book.  I typed it as shown in the BOS 1st one, but got two reports back from QA saying I was wrong?  In my case my report read "The patient is well devolped and well nourished."  The QA person added hyphens?  It is my understaning you use a hyphen when the sentence reads"Well-nourished male/female."  There is only 1 QA person that seems to fault me for this time and time again.  It upsets me because I do not believe I am wrong on this one.  Am I?    I enjoy getting feedback to see how I am doing and learn the occasional blank which I cannot for the life of me figure out but really on this hyphen thing I am referring to the BOS.  It is all there in black and white (good old plain English) page 79.  I am debating if I should fight this or not at my company.  Seems like whenever I say anything -- been down this road before -- this person in QA just gets down right nasty.  I have no problem with QA people when I really did miss something or research something incorrectly.  Again QA can be a great learning tool, but it just seems to me there is always one who is enough to drive the poor MT to tears.
most employers use the Book of Style sm
for standards and I would get one and read up on it to know the latest info...what did you fail on your testing? Speed? accuracy? You can certainly brush up on these things with practice tapes/dictation. Have you thought of typing independently for clinics in your area? Don't forget about psychiatric clinics, physical therapy clinics and other, less obvious places where documentation is necessary. Go personally to a doctor's office, speak only to the office manager there and tell them you are looking for work, perhaps at first only as a helper/coverage for their current Transcriptionist (I cover many doctor's offices for vacations). It will get your foot in the door at least. I have had two doctors ask me to be their full time transcriptionist after their own had left because I was their vacation coverage and they knew I could handle the job. Keep your head up! Perhaps working at a local hospital is the way to go. Good luck to you!
What Book of Style is standard use now? sm

I haven't worked actively since June of 2007.  At that time I used the AAMT Book of Style 2nd Edition.  Is that what is being used now or is there another book I need to invest in?

THANKS!

Error in Book of Style 2nd edition!?

Hey!  I just paid over $60 for this dang BOS (my new employer requires I have one), so I'm studying it diligently, and on page 297 they're referring to Salter-Harris fractures as "Slater-Harris".  Thought I was going nuts, checked Stedman's and they say its Salter.  Am worried there are other errors in it, and I won't know it!  Do they publish their bloopers anywhere?

I'm not a member of AAMT (and probably never will be, I'm not a joiner), but I'm pretty doggone disgusted I just shelled out that kind of money for published errors, especially after reading repeatedly in the book how regular MTs aren't worthy of putting letters after their name unless they've been certified by the all-knowing AAMT!  Guess I'd never pass their test since I'd say Salter-Harris instead of Slater!

Anyway, I feel ripped off, especially since all editors/employers act like the AAMT is holy like the pope!  Thanks for listening to me vent!

You need the Book of Style, 2nd Edition, to work out here. Some used

Book of Style Workbook - helpful?

Thinking of ordering it - anyone use it with the BOS?

AAMT Style Guide!!! (Phooey)
Is there a "quick" style guide available on the net?  I don't have time to pick up an AAMT Book of Style before I test.  I've done this for 30+ years and have never been corrected by the physicians but this national company wants things done in the AAMT standard.  Every physician I've ever transcribed for asked me NOT to change a thing and AAMT style be dam--d.  But, nationals have their own way of doing things (testing!) and while I certainly know what I'm doing - I'm not sure that I'll do it the "AAMT way".  So, any help you can give me is appreciated!
Try doing a "page by page" with the Chicago Book of Style...(sm)

...or Modern English Usage. The BOS is truly a work of fiction.

To the original poster: Don't waste your money.

curet or curette? is there a preference according to book of style? nm

AAMT 2nd ed. finally adopted the rules the AMA and CBE style guides

use numerals (except at beginning of sentence).  It conveys numerical information quickly when one sees the numbers rather than the word.

I don't know of a standard national font and size.

No offense, but big deal. AAMT is NOT for the American MT.

AAMT Book
Me too!  And what do they do for us?  Not a heck of a lot!  The pay rates keep going down and our expenses continue to increase.
its just a book that AAMT came up sm
with years ago and the companies and hospitals that go by it don't have a clue. There is nothing the least bit professional about the book. Somebody, arbitrarily came up with these rules years ago and made alot of money off of selling it. To keep up with making money they are going to have to keep selling the book therefore changing it every few years. Its ridiculous!

Atlanta medical book supply store?

I would so appreciate some help.  I just started an IC job.  I wasn't told I would need a word Expander and medical spellcheck.  Every other place I have worked for provided these.  I need to get something fast, i.e., in person now if possible!, as I am already working and not very productive without these two items.  There was a store I went to years ago in downtown Atlanta where I got some medical books near the Fox theater.  Does anyone know if it is still there and the name of it?  I don't have any yellow pages and I have not been able to pinpoint anything on Google.  Thanks so much!

They are newbies! They can built a Medical Phrase book
buy entering the answers given on the word help board into the
'Medical Phrase Index.'

They will learn.

Isn't it the goal, last not least to facilitate the job?

Why do we use calculators, computers, kitchen appliances that facilitate out work?

This is called evolution!
Medical Transcriptionist's Guide to Microsoft Word book
Does anybody have this book?  Is it worth the money to buy it if you are pretty comfortable creating macros and such in Word already?  Just wondering.... I am always looking for new ways to increase my speed and make things easier.  Any info would be great from someone who has this book.  Thanks!
Not MT association, but a TRANSCRIPTION association.
This includes general transcriptionists, legal transcriptionists, etc. I did sign up because it was free for now. I am curious to see where this goes.
Please ask style questions on the Style board.

Stedman's phrase book vs. Medical Phrase Index? sm
I'm debating between the newest edition of the MPI versus the Stedman's phrase book. Have had experience with the MPI, but not the Stedman's one. Is Stedman's worth it?

Just make a note in your book and go on. Every book I read you can find an error

he is not American on what was an American site
What we post, jobs posted, and those who are posting jobs have no way of knowing it is off shore because he is hiding it - what a great way to get more of our jobs - not sure why this does not bother you. But as an American it bothers me

There is an association whom I believe has
a whole guideline of QA scoring on their website. I do know that having 2 critical errors in one job is NOT good, though, no matter the company. One critical error really brings down your percentage - can't imagine two.
