Maybe the kids just weren't good in math period. No

matter where they go to school there are going to be kids that just struggle in a subject.   Not having family support could be a major issue too.  I never understood not having family support and why it mattered to a parent whether they had it or not because they are the parent.  It would be nice if the family was supportive though.  I have known people whose parents were so against it, but later saw that they were missing so much and bought into it and actually enjoyed helping them learn and explore.   It doesn't take an education to be able to educate your child, it just takes love, time, and patience.  Not all parents can provide that, but most can and do.  I have 1 year of college and my just turned 11-YO is so far ahead that we went to a local college bookstore today to get him books because he has pretty much mastered everything else.   I spend my free time reading his books trying to stay one step ahead of him and in the process getting a better education than I ever got when I was in school and I went to pubic and private schools and was also in advanced classes.

Homeschooling is not for everyone, but it is an option and those who choose to do it should be allowed to do it without being degraded for it.  There are a tremendous amount of resources available to homeschoolers, the bigger the city the more options.  Lack of socialization is one of the first issues that a non-homeschooler brings up.  Our children still play with neighborhood children, participate in community sporting activities, scouts, 4-H, etc. so there are plenty of times for socialization.  My youngest son has never met a stranger and everyone wants to be around him from ages 1 to 100.  My oldest isn't as social and most of his friends are public school kids, but when he was in public school he didn't have but 1 friend, mainly because he was so advanced and the things he would talk about where things way over the other kid's heads and they thought he was lying.

Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now.

Late period, test negative, 1 week later my period arrived.
To be honest, when I did become pregnant, I knew it right away. Sounds weird, but I just knew and it showed up on HCG test at 4 weeks.

Sometimes, you just know! Good luck whatever results you have.
Actually, chosing "cap after period" will not force a period in the instances I mentioned. --
Even with it checked, it WILL NOT cap after a number with a period in it. Like "white count 14.1. hemoglobin 10.9.

If you know of a way that it WILL, let us all know. I have never had a version of Word that will work that way. Always puts in the lower case, even though there is a period there.
Actually, they're usually really good kids.
Especially when compared to most of the kids these days.  But just like any other kids, they do get bored.  This summer has been weird because most of their friends are "visiting their fathers" for the summer, so there's no one around to play with.  And it's been unusually hot and rainy, so they're cooped up inside a lot.  Besides, they didn't hit me on purpose.  They lost a couple of Hot Wheels today, got a lecture about throwing things in the house, had to kiss Mom's head, and did slave duty.  Now they're all in bed early so I'm getting a jump on tomorrow's work.
Personally, I don't think either one is that good looking. Probably just as well no kids for them

:)

We try to set good examples for our kids. We rarely

drink, don't have alcohol in the house except for cooking wine/sherry, don't smoke, don't do drugs, are honest, hard working people.  My oldest son has "friends" who smoke, who put vodka in their Coke cans, cuss, steal, etc.  My son is a good kid and no I'm not naive and he isn't doing this stuff behind my back because we spend lots of time together.   My son is a health freak and won't allow anyone to smoke around him.  We've also tried to explain to him that even if he isn't drinking if someone he is with is caught drinking then he is guilty by association and he knows he needs to avoid these kids.  He has come home before upset that kids were using seriously foul language.  The "F" word at our house is spelled f-a-r-t.

We live in a country club community.  The kids around here get new cars when they turn 16.  The parents don't keep up with their kids, just give them money.   My son has to earn his car with saving $$, keeping out of trouble, and good grades.  I don't keep tabs on him 24/7, but I know where he is at ALL times so that if I need to find him I can.  He even asks me if he can get on-line so I know he isn't using the computer for porn.  He is concerned that he doesn't have enough testosterone because he isn't wanting to sleep with anything that stays still long enough.  Don't know that his friends are, but they talk a good talk anyway.

I think you are wise to be concerned and just need to keep open communication with your kids and hope that he makes good choices.  My son was a follower when he was younger and I had serious concerns about how he would be growing up, but now he has become a leader and I'm very proud of him because so far he is making good choices.

Kerri had a good idea - When my kids were little, (sm)

we lived in a 2-story house, ABOVE the landlord.  Try keeping 3 little kids quiet when your landlord is downstairs - so I guess my point is, that would be more stressful than what you are going through now.  Trust me.

Our school has good scores but my kids have never been stressed

Probably depends on the teachers and the corporate culture at your school.

No reason to feel good about it. Just showing that kids are going to get into trouble
So let them learn how to function in society rather than hide them from it.
"period, period, period..."
Yes I've transcribed for an MD who said this constantly while he was trying to think of what he would dicate next. I also had one who would say "ahhhhhhhhhh....." for what seemed like an eternity!! So annoying isn't it!
Good luck on teaching your kids but it's a hard lesson to swallow
if a kid is being made fun of and most kids just want to fit in. No one wants their kids hurt needlessly and I hope you consider this because you really can't change the world's perception of trailer parks. I don't know how it got to this point, but it is what it is and your kids should not suffer for it so you can make a defensive statement against all who have preconceived notions of trailer park people, further enhanced by TV shows.
Gotta find a good place to live. My kids play outside.

They know to come in when the street lights flicker on.

Strength in numbers though. I'd never let one of my kids go to the playground on the next street over by themselves, but my parents never let any of us wander off too far by ourselves either. It was always with a bunch of other kids.

MedQuist? Ctrl+shift+F, period, space, tab, period, space, space, change all. nm

Because they weren't doing much
They were working too hard to take the time to talk.  It was the American workers that made me sick.  I was sort of embarrassed by the fact that they couldn't do the job without complaining about having to go to the next one.  They even brought their kids with them to work who played with my kids' stuff without even asking first.  They were ignorant and not worth the money they were paid.  It is a shame that I had to feel that way, but it is so true.
I tried to work it out, they weren't willing. nm

they weren't asking for help, just complaining
x
You weren't trained
You weren't trained, which is why you couldn't earn a living doing MT.  A lot of people make that mistake, think they just sit down at a computer and type what they hear, then they wonder why they can't make any money. I'm sure if you had gone to school to learn MT, you would have been great at it. After all, you didn't teach yourself to become an RN, right?
Amen to that - I'm fed up with it. We weren't
even asked if we would CONSIDER going to editing, we are just switched over. I wasn't hired to edit and was hired to transcribe at a mutually agreed-upon line rate. I can type faster than I edit - I am going to lose a lot of $ at this editing stuff if I don't find something else. Not happy at all with it.
Weren't you ever taught that if you
don't have anything nice to say to someone, don't say anything at all? You must like being rude and hateful, and I don't mean just YOU personally, I mean everyone who has to criticise and be rude.
Do little kids like caramel? My big kids won't even eat it! We make the basic Baker's chocolat
s
Yes, then what was "male veterinarian" if you weren't
Some people need better things to worry about.
LOL. It took a moment to realize you weren't
nm
And how do you know they weren't cussing up a blue
p
Then you weren't making any profits -- sm
If taxes were eating up your "profit" you weren't making any as even as an employee you pay taxes and so your takehome pay is less.  All you pay is the extra 7.5% of SSN when you are an IC or in business for self.  There are so many write offs that I have or anyone can have that I actually have more take home pay than if I were an employee.  So again, you had no profits as if you had been an employee you would have been 30% down in take home pay anyway.  With all my write offs -- which I would still have an an employee but could not deduct, I am in a much higher tax bracket than I am now.  So even with the extra 7.5% for SSN, it is well worth it to be and no I do not cheat just take all available write-offs that I am allowed.
I never said you shouldn't have kids! Feeling guilty? I asked WHY you had kids.
You clearly stated in your post that you ship the kids off to camp all day, and they're TIRED AT NIGHT!!  You know exactly what you said.  You said it as a PERK - AS IN GREAT! They're gone all day, it wears them out, and so I shovel dinner in their mouths and off to bed!  You can try to paint it any way you want, but YOU SAID IT.  Again, I only hope your kids never hear you speak that way or write that way. Shame on you.  Why have kids at all?  Just another parent who has them, gets rid of them for day AND night, BRAGS ABOUT IT, and then calls ME wicked!  Give me a break!  Camp is fine - its WHAT YOU SAID AND YOU KNOW IT.  Your own words showed your heart. Period.
Let's do the math.

MTSOs are paid by hospitals and/or huge ugly conglomerates who exist to attempt to try to help the hospital turn a profit, or at least less of a loss. MTSOs are desperate to get business, so all too often they sell their soul for a pittance (what a decently paid IC would make per line).

The MTSO has to pay the piper:  You, copy paper, management, technicians, equipment, QA, trainers, lawyers (yikes!), accounting firms, rent, and on and on.

Yes, many MTSOs make a boat-load of money, many spend money badly and the MTs pay the price, but many are barely hanging on by their toenails.

It's the trickle-down theory in real life. People use the medical system dishonestly (people we know, might even be you), insurance companies want to pay as little as possible because they have mouths to feed, hospitals want to be able to pay their people and improve equipment and be able to save lives, so they try to cut down on what they pay to THEIR overhead, the MTSO. The MTSO is making less so (hopefully) try to cut down on their overhead so they don't affect us, but I know for a fact that too often the MT pays the price long before the CEO and his/her close friends have to cut down on their spending. But, that's the story at every level. The little guy pays but, in truth, we are also the crux of the problem.

Life goes on. Let's all move to a socialist country!

Try this math

1,000 words x 5.5 char per word = 5,500 characters total

5,500 characters /65 standard characters per line = 85 lines

$5/85 lines = $.059 per line, which is less than 6 cents per line.  Not a very good deal unless you're a total newbie or it's a really easy report to type.

never did like math

But everything else I said is correct.  (GD&W)

Thanks for doing the math (sm)

So that would be based on 8 cents per line, she must make at least 24 cents per line?

LMAO!!!!

See the math SM

Ok, let's say you're a speedy Transcriptionist and can do 2000 lines a day.  You would earn:

15.50 x 8 = 124.00 (base pay) plus

$40 extra for extra lines plus

employee status with bennies (value? a lot!)

but based solely on pay, you would earn $20.50 an hour!  Not too shabby!

Chickadee

thank you too for doing the math!!...sm
20% from 9 cpl for reg = 7.2 CPL for ASR.  Thanks again for DOING THE MATH !!
need help with the math !!!

I just charged a POSSIBLE new client 11 cents a line - now here is my dilemma - I suck at math.

If the client should ask me, is that 11 cents per 65 characters with spaces or without spaces - what should I say.

Second, how do I figure out the math  I have Microsoft Word and it has a line count and character count with spaces and without spaces.  How does one figure out the math?

Oooohhhh what was I thinking....

I did the math sm

on one of my word documents, and they were almost exactly the same.

1545 characters without spaces divided by 55 = 28.09 lines

(same report) 1851 characters with spaces divided by 65 =28.47 lines

so, I would say it is almost exactly the same as 9 cents per 65-character line with spaces.

Let's Do the Math!!!

Okay, here and on other boards there are many questions as to "which school to attend" and "best schools" and "only three schools matter" and so on and so forth.

There are at least 100,000 MTs working in the U.S., according to the BLS stats.

100,000.

Not even 1/10 of the working MTs could have possibly gone to those schools.

That leaves 90,000 MTs trained elsewhere, for those of you following along at home.

And yet, the constant refrain is "Andrews, M-Tec, and CS."

And they are good schools, certainly, especially the first two. But they aren't the ONLY schools and people who are spreading the hysteria that "you won't ever work unless you attend on of those three schools" are not helping the profession. Some of the message boards on other forums (fora) are so obviously biased that it's laughable, yet the newcomer to the field might not pick up on that.

A challenge: Tell where YOU went to school.

I went to Meditec and I'm working, folks. And doing well. And enjoying it! I have several "online buddies" who attended MT Advantage. They are working, too!

And to those who will say it was "mere luck:" 90,000 people gettin' lucky -- I like those odds!!!

Let's Do The Math
I didn't go to school at all.  Been working for a major national since 1997.
let's do the math
Back in 1973, I had on-the-job training at a local government hospital in the "transcription pool."   I was so interested in medical terminology, I took the medical dictionary home with me every night and on weekends.   I then took a medical terminology course at this same hospital, beginner's and advanced and learned more medical terminology.   Those were the days.......  It was all free too....
Do the math...
1 to 3 cpl (friggin highway robbery).... if you edit 200 lines and hour...is 2 dollars per hour, at the top tier of 3 cpl.. is 6 dollars an hour...  I have no idea how these companies get away with this.  If you are really good at editing and quick...and can edit 400-500 lph (and believe me that is top of your game)....range if 4/hr to 12/hr.  Medical editing takes a highly experienced Transcriptionist because so much little stuff would get passed over...and I am sure it is because they are putting extremely inexperienced MTs or all the ESL in India on editing thinking any monkey can do it.  The gross erros will catch up and either the hospitals will not care or the proverial Sh#t will hit the fan and they will have to start paying professional MTs what they are worth.
the math

To make $15 an hour, one must edit 500 lines an hour.  That is a furious pace and cannot be kept up except by the exceptional MT, one who is that coordinated and focused. Perhaps one can do that for four hours, but eight hours?  Unless there was a break in the middle, maybe.  And every day?  And is the dictation that good that one can fly through the reports?  Every day? I think not.

I make roughly $20 an hour straight typing now, so VR is out of the picture for me.  I just do not want to do VR and will get out before demoting myself to those insulting wages.  We are worth a decent wage.  The MTSOs need to realize that our knowledge is worth something.  We are not just typists.

If it weren't for us Americans, he wouldn't be the star

mine did this and my headphones weren't plugged in all the way nm

if i were being promised things that weren't being followed through, i'd hit the road. sm
i agree on the decreasing the bonus but maybe they didn't have as productive of a year this year or didn't clear as much in their pocketbooks as they would like, lol. i technically think all companies should give something; after all, a gift is a tax write off anyway. better to give to those busting our tails for them rather than uncle sam. i haven't gotten anything but cards in the last 3 years so i am used to it by now and don't expect it but i would definitely be grateful even for a meal gift card or anything for that matter.
Me, too, but we weren't allowed to use White-Out. We had to erase sm
all our carbons, sometimes I had 6, as we weren't allowed to use a copier. I wish we had a board of our own, don't you? Things are different with us.
If it weren't for needing a land line for DSL
My cell phone is my primary phone and I have more minutes and free long distance than I can use per month. I got basic phone services and locked it from any LD calls to save money and my land line still costs $30 a month. I feel I'm wasting that money but there isn't anything I can do. I won't drop my cell phone because I have my kids on as extra lines and they wouldn't have a phone otherwise.
weren't these shoes originally called...sm
to me, crocs would be made out of crocodiles (I do live in Florida *LOL*).....what you all describe sounds like the *jellies* my daughter wore when she was 10 or 12.
Patti, weren't you one of the MTSOs complaining
a couple of weeks back that there's really no big money in this biz anymore and it wasn't worth the time/effort put in when all is said and done? Or maybe you're having a good week this week? : )
Weren't the Indians given a reduced rate to get CMT?
p
It means they probably weren't worth your time
and that unless they were not being straight with you (perhaps you did not actually pass their test for example) that they are disorganized and careless when it comes to recruitment.

Look elsewhere - APPLY MULTIPLE PLACES because this IS unfortunately not a unique situation. I have 20 years in the business and I have often had four resumes out at once because I KNOW some of the jobs advertised are not real jobs and I will never hear back. Others will SAY you have a job and then drop the ball to get you started.

The ones who seriously want to hire you *now* will make that very clear... Basically whoever gives you work first (that meets *your* requirements of course) is the company you go with.

Make a note of those companies who don't act professionally - and consider yourself forewarned about what they might be like to work for in the future.

SOME have legitimate communication oversights - but there are a TON who are poorly managed. It shouldn't be rocket science to figure out that ignoring a candidate (dropping the ball) etc., very loikely elimiates a potential person for future needs.
They weren't *fudging*. They didn't ADD hours -
The employee LOSES, and the company WINS.

Either the employee should get a OT differential for the extra hrs. worked, or else the *minimum* daily line count is TOO HIGH.

You probably would have had more people in chat if it weren't New Year's Day.
l
If it weren't a psych note I might wonder why it was relevant
but in a psych note I could easily see why mention of sexual orientation might be appropriate. I otherwise might wonder why doc felt need to include it in a regular medical note, where it's not normally mentioned if a person is straight.
I'm sure you're fine. If you weren't worried/
that would be different.  But you obviously do care.  I'm sure you are doing just fine.  Ask your MTSO; I'm sure she will appreciate that you are conscientious enough to ask.
