In Reply to: Giving up Health Insurance - Kristy

I'm in the same situation, but I am continuing to pay $350 a month just for myself.  I've had this insurance for almost 3 decades, and I'm scared to death to give it up. My newish employer offers insurance, but if I leave that place (stability is a thing of the past), then I'll be without.  With hypertension and mild obesity, I haven't been able to find any other place that would take me, in the hopes of cheaper premiums.  I have $5K deductable (which I don't have), it covers 70% of major stuff.  Like I'm gonna come up with the other 30% somewhere; well, no.  I have heard that hospitals will negotiate payments and will even bring down costs.  Also, one can negotiate where one goes for testing and such things, because the differences in costs for the same things can be terrific.  I don't know.  I keep holding my breath and hoping for a quick demise, skipping all the physical (and emotional) suffering that comes with getting older.  Like you, I often wonder what happens if ...

Oh, I also remember a friend telling me that her friend has big bills like that.  She agreed to pay $5 a month or so, and that's what she does.  As long as something is being paid, they can't do anything -- or something like that.  There's a little hope in that story.
