Taking out taxes isn't an issue, since they don't have to contribute to it.

They do not want to pay the employer's half of SS. The biggest issue, though, is with unemployment insurance and Worker's Comp.

If you're an IC, they can't be accused of laying you off every time they mismanage how much work they have available. They also don't have their UI premiums raised for terminating people, because they didn't "hire" you to begin with.
