I'm not talented in all those areas and hope to attract other MTs who are. There's no money in it at this point, unfortunately.

i do have a sense of humor and i like clever and witty satire.
i do not like i love lucy or archie bunker (reruns). i love seinfeld. i hate slapstick sight jokes. do not entertain the thought that if someone does not find what you think is funny humerous they are w/o a sense of humor. i just know smarter guys i guess and can't even relate to the joke but if you can.......oh well. i am sure it was in fun and jest and you meant no harm. as i said it only provides insight into the person who finds it humerous as to what a person finds funny.

    peace.
I have a radiologist who gives commentary
When he gets tired he starts talking about the patients - I knew a girl named such-and-such; who would name their child that?; st*pid guy was drunk and fell, ha ha. It's amusing after a long day. I've also had ones that sing, joke, etc. They're not all boring.
If only they could ditch Brooke Burke and her insipid canned commentary. And those outfits. nm

What goes around DOES eventually - sm
come around, and I think we MT's need to help it a bit more then we have been in the past. Regardless of who wins this year's election, and who our elected officials are next year, WE need to start lobbying and pushing for reform in a messed-up healthcare system that allows patient reports to be sent out of the United States. And we need to push for a change from the current policy of REWARDING hospitals, MTSO's, insurance companies, etc. for offshoring what should be strictly AMERICAN work.

They say "the pen is mightier than the sword", and who better to write letters and emails, newspaper editorials, blogs, letters to the editors of newspapers, etc. than MTs, who have a superior command of the written word, and who know firsthand what's really going on in the medical world, and how it hurts us, and ALL American patients.
You're right...I eventually was able to do it...

after reading a thread on Productivity Talk.   'She' wouldn't even really talk to me about it..."just send the $25."  I felt she could have at least been a bit more helpful, but she really wasn't at all.  The conversion instructions didn't work when I followed them.  That as over 3 years ago.  Maybe they are better now, but I just don't care for how SpeedType works.  Period.  I would resell it to someone, but I don't think they would thank me.

What I see makes me think US MT will eventually
    sda
Eventually the India MTs will not need

I think eventually all companies will be doing
almost 100% VR and we will definitely be taken advantage of then, getting paid 3 cpl. I will not work for that and that's why I want out of transcription ASAP!
    this is my goal too...
haven't reached it just yet, though.
what is the LPH goal they have for you?
    x
    Definitely have a goal! sm
I certainly want to be involved in high-level administration. I have arranged some interviews with several professionals to get more of a realistic scope of their positions so I can tailor my educational pathway accordingly.

Thank you so much for responding!
If you need a goal, then set your

own goal based upon what you are doing now.  Stop comparing yourself to others.  What if you found out the other gals are doing twice as much as you?  Will you magically find a way to do twice as much as you are now, or will you feel worthless because you are only half as good an employee?

You SHOULD BE DOING your own personal best, always, no matter what everyone else is doing.

Why is this being allowed to happen, isn't it eventually
If American workers are forced out of their jobs so foreigners can work for cheap, making the owners of these companies richer, what happens to consumption?  The avg American is too poor to consume much, driving other American businesses into the ground.  Soon it will be a monopoly, there will be no middle class, just poverty and the filthy rich making money off foreigners.
Hey, it's called CAPITALISM....Something will eventually run WM out too.

THere was a uproar years ago when supermarkets came into being, then the department stores... Who the heck shops in Mom N' Pop stores anymore?  And who can afford the inflated prices.  Capitalism is the best system, no matter how much you don't like it.

I notice that too. QA will eventually catch up to them.

Look at it this way, he will probably need it for more than 1 class eventually; or my daughter
needed Word which at the time I did not have, so our alternative was for her to stay after school and use their computers as I could not afford the program then.
don't laugh: it WILL be called that eventually s/m
and if not, it's not like everyone wouldn't know the difference.  Scary!
Eventually, VR will be the industry standard.
The way I see it, the options are:
    A. Learn it now; find a platform and a company where you can make decent money.
    B. Keep job hopping for the next few years as straight transcription is phased out bit by bit, company by company.
    C. Find another profession.

Eventually, the straight transcription will only be available when creating speech models for new dictators.
    The ultimate goal
is accurate, timely reports to facilitate patient care, and whatever comes along to accomplish this will be used.  We know it won't happen overnight, but , as we all know, new methods are being tried as we speak.  Nothin' stays the same.
I sit a goal for myself, on 8 hours
I usually am hitting 3000 but that is both VR and straight. I do not want to work full time anymore so figured it would take about that a day in order to work just part like I want but still to get a decent salary.
My goal is $150/day, only type

I am a slow typer so I need all of the info that I can get about expanders/short cuts.  I am only getting 7cpl and can type about 135 lph (slow I know).  Anyway, I need to be making $150 a day at least.  What do I need to do specifically to accomplish this in a 6 to 8 hour day?  I have Instant Text....  Thanks

Bleach works but disintegrates it eventually.

Also, any action you eventually may take will have to happen in her state - not yours. nm

FOLLOWUP: We are now only $75.00 away from reaching our goal.

You generous donations are amazing and truly appreciated.  Once the goal is reached, I will be walking into Walmart to speak to the store manager about getting a gift card to this family back east and know that the MTs children WILL have Christmas this year!

    THANK YOU!

FOLLOWUP: We now only need $15.00 and we will have reached our goal
and I will be on my way to Walmart.  You are all fantastic people to be so giving.  I know that it's hard to scrape bucks together working in this industry and at this time of the year, so again THANK YOU for your emergency donations!
goal is 10,000 lines a week!... :) nm

Do you have a goal job you're shooting for? sm
I did not, so I figured the BS in HIM with the RHIA was my best bet, thinking I would be readily qualified for any job in HIM. Not quite true, but I never regretting spending the time, effort, and money on it to earn it. Had I KNOWN that I wanted to be coder, or a tumor registrar specifically, I probably would have opted for just their respective certifications, but I was young and not really sure where I wanted to end up. Interestingly, I found myself with a much harder job search than I'd been led to believe would be true. I couldn't get entry-level HIM jobs because I was perceived as 'overqualified' and offices felt I would quit and move on as soon as a better opportunity came along; but I couldn't get management-type jobs because my only experience was the clinicals I did during school--understandably so, I didn't want to manage when I didn't really know what i was doing! Your certification says "administrator" but your resume doesn't.
Best of luck to you, the education is never wasted. You'll get different opinions on certification, but your classroom learning and clinicals are well worth it.
I started MT to gain skills to eventually work....sm

outside my home. I was working another small business from home too and had been home for 13 years total. My MT skills got me a job as a secretary for the Army. My first position didn't pay a lot, but it was still about $3.50 more an hour than I could find anywhere else locally. In August 2006, with promotions etc., I will have had total increases in salary of 45% in two years. My next move is to start taking some college courses (which my employer will pay for) and applying for positions with a more defined career field. Having a hard time figuring out which field, as I have a lot of options/opportunity.

Working from home served a huge purpose, but since DH is also self-employed, my current job adds a lot of security to our family in terms of health/life insurance, retirement, paid vacations, etc. I added up the cost of all my paid benefits vs. paying out of pocket as an independent contractor, and they were worth another 35 - 40% of my salary, which will increase once I start taking college classes.

If you are not looking in the medical field, gear your resume towards your other skills. MTs have a myriad of skills (research, computer, organizational, listening, following instructions, bookkeeping). If you are an independent contractor, you are more than an MT, you are a small business owner, which puts a host of additional skills on your plate. Get creative and look at some on-line resumes in different fields, you will probably be surprised how many skills you have.

When I decided to look for a job, I researched all the highest paying companies/opportunities within the distance I was willing to travel and only applied to those companies. It took about a year and a few interviews, but I eventually got exactly what I was looking for. I still get calls from some of the places I interviewed/applied offering jobs.

That's a Shame, Becka, I hope you can eventually collect your pay! (EOM)
    .
I joined in the 70's because their goal then was professional wages.
it's 2008. they must not be very good at what they do. However, they do self promote extremely well.

it does get easier and eventually things make sense to you even when you can't understand -
I was doing a Irish doctor, I could understand the medical terms pretty well, it was the easier, more normal words, I had trouble with.  Because of the lilting and very fast way he said it "three arteries and a vein" nearly drove me insane.
This info would probably have helped reach your goal this morning! LOL Thanks! nm

Dishes once a week? My goal is to live life better than the day before.
Try to enrich my life, even if it's just a little extra prayer or a little thoughtful thing for someone who doesn't expect it. Everyday.
My goal every year is $52k, which I have done for the past 2 years working sm
for Keystrokes. I do radiology only, I should mention. I took the amount I wanted (actually needed) to make in a year, divided it by 52 weeks, divided it by 5 days, came up with $1000 per week or $200 per day. I divided that by 8 hours and by my report rate ($1.25). I know that I need to transcribe 20 reports per hour on average. I keep a tally. Some days, it takes me longer to do than others, but I sit down and do my 8 hours every single day. I use my Expander a LOT (literally for all but a few words). I am on one account, so I know those doctors inside and out. If I am short at the end of the week, I ask if there is work available on the weekend for me to do. The most I end up with 2 hours to make up what might have been short during the week.

At $40k, you would need to make $153.85 per day, or $19.23 per hour. At $0.07, you need to type 275 lines per hour, or 2200 for the day. This should be very easy to get with using an expander and sitting down with a set schedule.

It takes a while to get used to making sure you hit your internal quota every day. I have to think of it daily and make it up on Saturday or Sunday so that I never start a week behind my personal goal.

I also take an incentives that are handed out (for instance if they are asking for help in a backlog situation at increased rate) and work at least a partial shift on holidays. If I am ahead at the end of the week, I carry it to the next week and know that I have some lines in my internal quota bank.

I know this sounds weird, but it works for me. I have helped a few others to get to their goals as well, and this seems to work for them too.

I would also look for something that is more in the 0.08 to 0.09 per line range. Ask your lead for production tips. Ask other transcriptionists. It is very possible for us to make good money, we just have to focus on our goals.

I have a sales background, which involved sales quotas. This is easier as I am in control of my daily production, not on someone else's decisions.

    Good luck!
My personal goal is when my mortgage is paid off by half - just 125K to go!
Then I will cut back to part time and let hubby carry me. :-) He makes lots more than I do now anyway.
lie detector tests too huh busy. just to see if everyone tells the truth about credentials and goal

I think they should check your medical and psychiatriac records too and see what type of medications you may be prescribed.  Maybe they could interview your neighbors and family to see if you have a history or lying or fabricating, delusions of grandeur, bipolar or just plain character flaws.  I have noted that on these boards sometimes people tend to fabricate.  hahaha. bwaaaaaaahaaaaaaa

Check it all out before you can get a job working at home.  I mean the pay is worth it to go through all the hoops and if you are exposed as a deviant too bad. No sense it taking ridiculous risks for .8 cents per line doiing medical transcription when you can ship it to India for way cheaper to all those good souls who don't have any vices.

I think you see the humor
or you wouldn't want to keep communicating with me. I think you love it!
    Sense of humor.
I have been in the same situation with doctors not spelling out names, etc. I have just quit a national company and have been wondering what to do next. When I read these postings today, I could not help but laugh. Keep your sense of humor as it helps the rest of us get through our days too.
lol.. thank you for adding humor to my otherwise
    nm
you need a sense of humor
Get over your bad self. The woman was having fun with a difficult situation - most psychologists would say that is healthy.

As far as your sour attitude - glad you're not in my church.

People whose English language skills are very poor should not be doing jobs where they have to give "Customer support" or "customer service" to English-speaking customer - period. They need to improve their English skills.

If you went to India, do you think they would give you a job speaking in their dialect? Certainly not. They, and most other countries, will not hire foreigners to do jobs that their own citizens are qualified to do. The U.S. is about the only country that does not protect the jobs of its citizens.
Did you have your sense of humor
    !
LOL ! Mustang, here you have your humor...nm

We got that point the first day on the job. People still need a little humor

ice creams bars with the chocolate candy surprise inside! Do they still make them? I may have to chase down an ice cream truck. Oh, do they still make THEM? LOL!
*humor* at the expense of one's sexuality &.NM

Because "Jasper" has a sense of humor
And chooses to take this in stride rather than engaging in the usual 'chicken little' antics usually engaged in on these forums, you choose to construe from that that he/she was an inferior employee?

Now I'M laughing...how very presumptious of you!!!
I think we were all kidding! Sarcasm - dark humor...

Good thing you got a sense of humor about it.
