I think someone with many years of experience (if the quality and skills are there, obviously) should make more than the national average. Then again, if you don't have to pay for health benefits or something like that it might be a more reasonable wage imo.

RPL National average
I am an IC working out of my home. I deliver and pick up everyday and provide a 24-hour turn-a-round, is there a national average rate per line??? Any resources would be helpful. I currently charge .12 per line, but with the cost of gas and the amount of time I spend delivering,I don't think it's worth it... Any comments? Seems like RPL has been at a stagnant rate for years... I am experienced.

Watch out for QA positions that are paid by cpl QA'd. In some instances it may work out fine, but hourly (in my opinion) is the best way to be paid for QA/editing.

It's not impossible. Some people are better at some jobs and some are better at others. I happened to fall into a great job. Mine is at a hospital and we get paid by the line. I lost about 5/hour when we went to a new platform of editing and transcription. I still can't make this anywhere else and no, it's not counting headers, footers, etc., it's just fast transcription and loving my job, makes all the difference in the world. I don't think it's gloating at all. There probably are a lot more transcriptionists who make this kind of money, it's just that no one is aware of it.

that's $33/hour. I'm not driving a Lexus or anything, but I'm comfortable. Generally speaking, find a mid-sized national, big enough to have enough work for you all of the time, yet small enough to care and realize that quality work deserves quality pay.

I average 20 to 25 min of dictation in an hour ...
so I'd say 3:1 for me...on AVERAGE.
Sometimes I can do better, sometimes worse. As long as I can average 3:1 for the day, I feel I've done okay.

for acute care, mostly OP notes, 65/char line, which would be 19,500 characters per hour.
Thought average is 15 min/1 hour.

What is the average lines per hour for radiology?
A lot of companies are now paying per line now rather than by report or per page. I just wondered if it differed from other transcription as I do both but do not have a line counter for radiology in the system I type into.
I average 600 lines an hour on ES - editing, sm
transcribing 400 lph.
I have been working this platform for about 3 years now.
Using the shortcut keys and not the mouse helps tremendously in an awesome line count average.

I average 1800 lines per 8 hour day, but have
been doing this 20+ years and have zillions of expanders. I still do lots of research and add expansion asll the time.

have also been doing this for 25+ years and have hundreds of Expanders and bunches of normals/standards that I have created. I am also on only 2 accounts from the MTSO. I also find that Ops are my favorites, and can literally fly through those while maintaining a 99+% accurace rate. It takes time. 16 months is not a long time in this business to increase your speed. My goal is always 200 lines an hour and I usually take a 10 to 15 min. break every 2 hours just to get away from the computer. It can be done.

Line rate isn't the only factor -- your lines/hour average is key, too.
Even at 7 cpl, keeping about 275 lines/hour average keeps you at $19.25 an hour and that is $40,000 a year.
It is a myriad of factors involved. You have to have the knowledge, be decisive, self-sufficient and very focused. Then, you need to negotiate as high a base rate as you can and look toward the incentive plan to increase your paycheck.
With our incentive, it was not worth it if I couldn't hit high lines in a day. So, I changed my schedule to hit those lines.
I am tired after my work days but having the 4 days a week off and a good income makes it worth it for me. It allows me to spend my days off doing things I want to.
A few years ago, Atlanta in-house average was about $12-$15/hour, plus good bennies. nm

A small national is a national company that is smaller
than a big national. There are a few "big" nationals, where they have hundreds, if not thousands of employees. I work for what I call a small national, only has about 30 employees. An MTSO could also be considered a small national.

My DH recently had knee replacement surgery a month and a half ago. The doctor has been prescribing oxycontin 30 mg this entire time. Husband has been trying to wean off of it and is down to 10 mg. He asked the doctor if he could come off it completely and the doc said to "just keep taking it." His next visit is in two months. With all the discussion lately about pain medication addiction, is it normal to be on this medication for this long and for the doctor to say "just keep taking it?" How long should one be on this med?

My large national has all the resources and money to operate successfully and have decent platform, etc., to work on, the small company did not, and I went back to the national.

if it is feasable, split that 6-hour shift into two 3-hour shifts. sm
i work a split shift and find that i am much better able to stay focused and get more work done that way. also, being 3 months pregnant you have gone through the very tiring time of pregnancy and you should start seeing an energy perk before long.

If you still want to stay in MTing, which is a dying job, go to a hospital and apply to do radiology. They sometimes hire people just out of transcription schools.
But don't work at home thinking you will make any money at all - even with 20 years of experience - the nationals have wrecked that.
Be under the umbrella of protection at a hospital. That way when your computer breaks, the weather is bad, you are sick, there is no work - you will not be without a paycheck.
The nationals are selling a line of BULL. Gradually they have taken what used to be our built-it benefits------------> and moved it over to their pockets and called it their PROFIT. They are not brilliant - but they are unethical thieves.

It seems you may have worked for one national, have you tried any others? There are a few good ones. I found a great one, but am keeping my fingers crossed because every time I find one, they start growing and changing (for the worst, in my opinion).
Unfortunately, it seems to be the trend in our profession. It could be we will all be out of jobs one day, just all at once in a heartbeat.
Like the age of automation, didn't people lose jobs and become 'displaced' like all at once?
I hate to say this, really, because I respect your feelings, but a lot of us lately are running out of work with our nationals. Complete flipside - I have been running out almost daily, even on 3, 4 accounts. I just ran out now and am waiting to get some work because I really need the money...
There seem to be no easy answers. We are all at the mercy of our employers and whatever they decide to do. Seems there are no laws for people like us...we are like slave labor.

For national MTs: how many different...
accounts does your national have you on...just curious.
I started with one and now am up to three and they're trying to shove two more accounts on me for a total of five. Simply hate it...would love to have just one primary account again with just one back-up.
As soon as I pick up momentum on the account I'm on at the moment, I get switched over to help out on another.
And yes...I have complained to them already...just wondering if this is the norm nowadays.

I've been going on-line from dawn to midnight to get my hours in. You know, this has happened with every service I ever worked for between Thanksgiving and mid January, so I'm not hysterical YET!

Only ONE out of plenty I am sure do I like because she is communicative, will email you your qa'd reports if you want, and will even call you at home if you request.....I have NEVER met another QA person like her and I nominated her for QA of the month (year if they offered that but they do not - *lol*)
