eat foods rich in zinc

Not having enough zinc can make smelling and tasting things like a festive holiday meal a real challenge. Here’s why: The cells in your tastebuds and nose that help you to smell depend on zinc. In fact, cells in the salivary glands make a zinc-dependent protein called gustin that is secreted into your saliva. An important contributor to your sense of taste, gustin helps develop cells that can distinguish among different flavors.

Although zinc deficiencies are pretty rare in the United States, it’s worth asking your doctor to test for a deficiency if you are experiencing taste and smell loss. Many things can lead to a deficiency, including poor eating habits, alcoholism, certain drugs, kidney disease, and the stress of surgery or serious burns.

"If I discover a zinc deficiency, I typically recommend 25 milligrams of zinc picolinate twice a day to start," says Dr. Silbert. Of course, you can also eat more of the foods that contain zinc. Your best bet is seafood such as cooked oysters and crab. Meats such as lean beef and lean pork also provide zinc, but they’re not really recommended because they are high in saturated fat. Other sources include eggs, whole grains, nuts, and yogurt. If you plan to take more than 20 milligrams of zinc a day, it’s best to do so under your doctor’s care.

high calorie foods
When my sister was sick, they encouraged her to drink a lot of Boost, Ensure and those types of high calorie drinks. Also, you can add LOTS of butter to his foods as well as honey, espeically if he can't taste it ! So sorry for your friend, and I hope he does really well and gets better !
It was nothing that I could put my finger on definitely. sm
Keep in mind this was 4-5 years ago though. I paid good money for my McAfee and had it for about a year and then they said they were not going to suppot that version any more and I would have to either upgrade (more expensive) or lose my tech support. So I entered the world of searching for a good AV program.

Other than that, it was a conglomeration of a lot of stuff. I didn't think it was very user friendly (or maybe I just didn't read enough of the tutorial) LOL, but it did not play well with some of my other software I had. It seemed to constantly butt heads with my SpyBot S&D. That being said, it did the job it was supposed to do, which I guess sometimes is all we can expect.
Try the meat baby foods by Gerber.

yep - it's the finger using the mouse the most

I have had this problem for so long, been through multiple mice, now on logitech for a couple of years (better but not great).  I just live with it - been MTg for 3 decades........hands always hurt too cuz I won't have carpal tunnel surgery or any hand surgery (been there, done that, and never again).  Hope you feel better.  Advil helps but Advil is not all that good for you for any length of time....

Finger fumbling

Hello all:

I was wondering if maybe some of you might have some pointers for me.  I have been doing transcription for almost 3 years, and I have days where I have "fumble fingers."  This really gets on my nerves as on the days I have fumble fingers it seems it takes me forever with my documents.  I was just wondering if anyone else has days like these? Any ideas on what to do?  I can typically type 80-85 words per minute, but when I have finger fumble days, of course it makes me type slower because I am having to continually backspace!!

Thank you :)

I think Reader's Digest just did an article on the top 13 foods to eat for health..sm

See if you can Google to get to their website and look for the article.

Dr. Mehmet Oz of New York City has a lot to say about food and supplements, too, and I think has a book out regarding what he considers essential for optimal health. He might even have a web site. And there's always good old Dr. Andrew Weil who's been around a long time advocating healthy eating with good health and longevity. I'm pretty sure he has a web site with recipes and info.

From what I remember of the top 13, the list includes blueberries, tomatoes/tomato sauce, spinach, walnuts, flax seed or flax seed oil, broccoli and other cruciferous veggies - sorry I can't remember the rest. Maybe oatmeal and citrus...??? Some soy and tofu are great for you, too! Meat, chicken, and fish should really be eaten sparingly and be lean cuts. Might want to search the other health/weight loss magazines/web sites (like Fitness) for advice and articles. Good luck to all of us as we strive for better health!

Has anyone had to work with a booboo finger?
I dropped a tire on my right middle finger last night and ended up in the emergency center.  Turns out I crushed the tip of the bone.  I have disability, but does anyone know if it's possible to get some kind of supplemental insurance to make up the difference?  This is my worst work nightmare, that something might happen to my hands.  Can I insure them for, oh a million dollars or so?

Right hand/finger tingling
Could be disk in your neck, carpal tunnel or both. I would see your PCP and/or orthopedic doctor and go from there. Collars do help, heat, etc. I have had this pain for years, even after surgery, not a lot of fun. Good luck, hope you get good news that it is none of the above.
Have had stiffness of all of my finger joints....
No pain, just mild stiffness/tingling in the morning that I only feel if I try to make a fist that pretty much lasts all day.  Doesn't keep my from transcribing or anything, just wondering if this could be caused by typing all day.  I kinda expected to get carpal tunnel syndrome in my wrists, but this is strange.  Unless this is the first sign of arthritis!  I'm only 40!

Anyone experience anything like this?  TIA!

I've heard that gum and snack foods are cravings they get. Nothing meltable!
Lemme look.
Cut out the white foods and high sugars and exercise more. It's what works. nm

Same finger/left hand - many years ago
Somehow got my finger between the panels of my garage door when I was pulling it shut leaving for work. At that time, worked in Radiology Dept.- x-rays showed FX & had it splinted. Believe it or not, went onto work & over the weeks learned how to compensate & "type" without that finger. Actually, had a hard time re-training myself to use that finger after the splint was taken off. Just knew at that time I "had" to work (divorced - 3 kids, no support, etc.) Amazing what you can do when you have to!
I didn't have any hand/finger symptoms either, just

wrist.  Using a brace at night helps some.  I use the kind that has the metal strip so that you can't bend your wrist.  I found them at my drugstore.   I had surgery almost 15 years ago and did fine until this past year, and again am developing symptoms.  My symptoms developed from writing, not typing, and now I can type usually without problems, but I can only write a tiny bit, can't grip a garden tool for long or do any type of fine motor movement for long and then if I do my wrists hurt so much that typing then bothers me.

I know there is some vitamin regimen to help, though I don't know what it is.  I was put on Naprosyn first and was allergic to it.  Orthopod suggested hot and cold soaks, 15 minutes each.  I had cortisone injections and some other type of injections, and physical therapy.   I was only out of work about 3 days, but I wasn't an MT at the time.   I do not have the strength in my hand that I used to, but other than that haven't really had any problems.  I do have trouble with pain occasionally, can't think of the word, but it feels like the scar is drawing up and I get shooting pains, but I can massage the scar and it eases.    I'm considering a job change rather than going through surgery again, not because the surgery was bad, just because not only do I have carpal tunnel, but I have swelling and tingling in my feet, butt spread, etc.

Word of warning - make sure you have an empty bladder before the EMG study.  They have to test both sides so they have a comparison and between laying flat, still, and the electrical shocks I couldn't get off that table quick enough to go potty.

Also, if you don't already, get a keyboard tray that is adjustable.  You can find them at a woodworking store or in various catalogs.  I can position mine at various heights and various angles.  I also sometimes lower the tray and put a pillow on it and then my keyboard and it absorbs some of the pressure and using the pillow you don't have an edge from the tray or the wrist pad pressing into you.  I also found I sit back in my chair better with the pillow.  If this is not comfortable at least try a folded towel between the tray and keyboard.

I wouldn't discourage surgery, but I would try some of the things above first.

I find most everything in your post to be finger pointing.
You are putting every excuse in the world out there as to why you are not able to do the job you were hired to do.

Sorry to hear about your past but that is NOT why you were FORCED to take a job. You made a CHOICE to take the job.

Yes, it is legal for an employer to ask you to do more than one account. It is NOT abuse but, by the other statements in your post, that you feel everything is someone else's fault.

If the job isn't for you, then go find one that is. The point is that your most profitable work might not be in medical transcription.

Go to the Food Network website and in the search box, type "cheese straws". You'll have a choice of many different recipes, but I think the one your mom is looking for using a cookie press is the recipe for "Zesty Cheese Straws" by Paula Deen.
Thanks for the recipe
I am going to try it, it sounds wonderful.

NORMAN POTATO SALAD WITH APPLES

The sweet crispiness of the apples and the tang of vinegar give this potato salad a special lift. It's named after Normandy, famous for its apples and for its apple brandy, Calvados.

2 pounds yellow-fleshed potatoes such as Yukon Gold
3 tablespoons cider vinegar
2 Granny Smith apples
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 cup apple juice
1/2 cup well-chilled heavy cream
1/2cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh flat-leafed parsley leaves
1 teaspoon Calvados (French apple brandy; optional) freshly ground black pepper to taste

In a 3-quart kettle cover potatoes with cold salted water by 2 inches and simmer until potatoes are tender but resist when pierced with a fork, about 20 minutes. Drain potatoes in a colander. When potatoes are just cool enough to handle, peel and cut into 1/4-inch-thick rounds. While potatoes are still warm, layer one third in a large serving dish or bowl and drizzle with 1 tablespoon vinegar. Season potatoes with salt and pepper. Continue layering in same manner with remaining potatoes and vinegar, seasoning with salt and pepper. Peel, quarter, and core apples. Cut quarters crosswise into 1/8-inch-thick pieces and in a bowl toss with lemon juice. In a small saucepan simmer apple juice until reduced to about 3 tablespoons. In a bowl beat cream until it just holds soft peaks and gently but thoroughly fold in reduced apple juice, mayonnaise, parsley, Calvados, and pepper. Season sauce with salt and gently toss together with potatoes and apples.

Serves 6 as a side dish.

I don't follow an exact recipe, but this is what I do. I chop up in a food processer some onion, (half and seeded) jalapeno, tomatoes and cilantro and then add my avacados. I also mix in garlic, chipolte seasoning, salt, pepper and cumin. Everybody loves it.

This is a recipe for chicken tetrazzini which sounds similar.

8 oz cooked/drained spaghetti, cooked chicken cut up, 1-3/4 C grated cheddar cheese - divided, 4 tbsp. Parmesan cheese, 2 oz jar of diced pimento, 1 small onion, minced, 1 can cr. of mushroom soup, 1/2 C chicken broth, salt and pepper to taste

Combine 1-1/2 C cheese, 2 tbsp. Parmesan and all other ingredients with spaghetti.  Place in greased casserole dish and sprinklewith remaining cheese.  Bake 350 for 45 mins.

You can use turkey or chicken for this.

No recipe here but

I have cut out potatoes, rice, breads, ice cream, etc. for almost 2 weeks and have lost 4 pounds.  I did South Beach a couple years ago but it takes too much preparation and planning, although I did lose 20 pounds without excercising.  You may want to try the South Beach Diet Cookbook.

I hated to exercise but now I've joined the Y - and really liking it.  I try to go everyday to a beginning exercise class and/or Pilates.  If I don't make the class, I try to do 30 minutes on the treadmill.

I have put off doing this for many, many years and can't believe how much better I feel.  It's alot easier to put on weight then take off, but I refuse to get discouraged.  I have lost alot of strength around my waist and lower back (pouchy tummy), but Pilates is helping that.  I work at my own pace which the instructor encourages us all to do.
