Serving Over 20,000 US Medical Transcriptionists

No matter what type of business you're in, there does -

come a time when you have to draw the line somewhere. It seems like a no-brainer that if the price for transcription was X amount of dollars with letterhead provided by the client, then it would be X amount MORE with letterhead provided by the service. Still I would imagine she panicked a little, fearing she'd lose the account if she stood her ground about a separate rate for providing the paper. Knowing how expensive paper is, I still have trouble seeing how she could just let it slide in the beginning.

In her position, having allowed him to cheat her for a certain amount of time, what I would do next is give him notice that next month (or next week, or whatever), due to the overhead costs of supplying paper for the account, she could no longer do it at the old price, and then quote the new price.

If she gets 'replaced', she'd have to figure that it was going to happen sooner or later anyway, and if he was that cheap, there were probably other 'surprises' down the pike, as well. So probably good riddance. It might seem like a better deal to keep that account and let the guy keep cheating her like that, but then again, a better account is probably just around the corner. OR --- he could start to take her seriously when she sticks to her guns and says she has to raise her price. She has to make a living, too, right? OR --- he could go with someone else for a while, realize he had a good thing when he was using her service, and come crawling back. At that point, she could probably charge him almost anything she wanted, within reason of course, and he'd gladly pay it.

I had a non-MT, service-type business a number of years ago, and some of my BEST clients were the ones who left in a huff when I had the 'audacity' to raise my prices along with the rise in overhead, only to come back on their hands and knees a few weeks or months later. Some of them became the most generous tippers, too. It was funny how male colleagues of mine in the exact same business were rarely, if ever, questioned when it came to their charges for services rendered. Yet as a female, it was almost expected that if the client tried to get me to provide the same service for less, that I wouldn't stand up for myself and would just accept it because I was a female.

Until there is an equal double-standard to go along with the perception that women's work is worth less than men's, and we can pay half what men pay at the gas pumps and in the grocery stores due to our gender, then we shouldn't have to simply settle for less than they would get for the same job, either. And you just KNOW that if medical transcription had evolved into a 'men's' profession instead of a 'women's' profession, it would most likely be a good, high-paying white-collar job that they would have fought long and hard to prevent from being offshored. We just stood there and allowed the hospitals to reduce it to about the same level as janitorial work, or lower.

If a woman running an independent MT business such as this woman is STILL doesn't want to do things like give clients the bad news when a price hike is in order, why not simply borrow a strong male voice to make those calls? And to have a little spiel on the voicemail system, so that it SOUNDS like the system is owned and run by a man? If the client believed a man owned the business and was making those kinds of decisions, I bet she'd be able to command a higher price for her services all around, not just when supplying the letterhead. Something to think about!

Home is where the heart is....no matter what type of structure!
Some people are so judgemental and know no better!

Don't worry about it, everyone has their own opinions and you can't change that.

Home is where the heart is no matter what structure it is.
hehe I was able to nurse and type at the same time. It's all a matter of the chair and keyboard

It they can't type a grammatically correct sentence, it doesn't matter how many degrees they h

You and me both. MQ is totally sick. They had better find another type of business to get into
because they have failed miserably with this.
I think you're the one who needs to get out of the business.
or at least get out of the house and make some friends in the real world. You're losing it fast.
If you're not a business, but an IC...sm
you can use your SSN.  If you do have a business license, it's how you set it up in the beginning...I have a business, but it is not incorporated or anything like that and I use my SSN.
you are still an IC when you're a business, you stop being an IC when...sm
you incorporate. Then you become an employee of your corporation. Most home based businesses don't require a business license. Since you aren't having customers traipse in and out, nobody really cares. No advantage to getting a tax free ID since you aren't collecting sales tax. The only thing you really should do when you get your own account is to set up a business checking account with a credit card attached to it. The physician office should make the invoice check out to your business, not you. The separate account simplifies bookkeeping and keeps the IRS happy. No need to really incorporate until you are making about $50K a year. Then you might want to think about it to save on the SS taxes.  If you do get your own account, find a CPA that you can talk to (i.e. approachable). There are self employment IRA's etc that you will want to take advantage of. As far as getting up enough nerve to walk into the office, I call it "the $10,000 question." All you need is one acccount on your own to make an additional profit of $10,000 over what you are making now. But the only people who get paid that are the ones who get up enough nerve to walk into the doctors' offices. Are you one of them?
It's none of their business why you're leaving.

Yup, they're about to lose my business. NM

If you don't know what a typo is, you're in the wrong business.
This is a message board, not a paid document.
Heh ... twice the price cuz they're an AAMT business partner! - nm

I've heard with Dell if you tell them you're a business,
you'll get someone from the US.  I already have two HPs but tried it anyway.  I used to say home or home office but said I use it for business and still got someone from India but he spoke very, very good English compared to some I've spoken to in the past.
Even with a salary you're kind of a small business owner!
Even if you're paid a salary you are your own agent, so to speak. Why not hire a part-time helper and pay them a subcontractor rate. That's what a service owner does. You are no hero for not getting some help. MTs who have their own accounts have responsibility for 7 days a week coverage, but not all of us type 7 days a week. Put an ad in the job seekers board and pay someone to take up the overflow. You will burn out and not be able to work at all eventually. Good luck to you.
I also type ERs and understand what you're saying:-) nm
nm
Why does that bother you? You're getting paid to type
what is dictated. What does it matter if it is "Mrs. Smith" in paragraph 1, "Ethel" in paragraph 3, or "the patient" in the recommendations? LOLOLOL

you're wrong, I type for an MD w/ADHD...nm

Doesn't matter, IF you are not paid an hourly wage, i.e. a set amount no matter - sm
how much or how little you type, say $12.00/hour, you do not get OT. As someone mentioned here, certain jobs are exempt, and as most of us are paid a flat rate of .08 cpl or .09 or .10, whatever it is, that is all we get regardless of how many hours under or over 40 hours we go. If you want OT then go get an in-house job or get a job doing something else.
In general business're running slower than usual but running. NM

Unfortunately it is legal..so yes it is business and they will continue with bad business practices

I made my business your business by posting and...
I totally respect everyone's opinions. It is easier for others on the outside looking in. That's why I pushed the "post reply" button yesterday. I trust my fellow MTs and I know the more I read from you all, the more confident I am becoming. I just need that final push, not from him though. I also wanted to let you all know that the physical abuse while I was pregnant was documented by my doctor and the hospital. I only wish I had known then that it is a felony to abuse a pregnant woman. I also photographed my face from a couple of weeks ago and told several people in my circle. I had such high hopes for us. Now...not so much. I'm not saying that I won't try to get him to church, but I realize that God can only do so much for someone who isn't listening. j
Business is business. Internet forums are
.
don't type double spaces. Type single. Then no one will be cheated.

For a business ad?! A business that deals
''Transcriptsis'' x2

''with good track record''

''serve our clients of all sizes'' (I know what they mean, but I just think the wording is funny)

''strive to achieve highest possible quality'' (once again, they never met an 'article' that they didn't hate)

''all departments including H&P...'' (or a comma, for that matter)

I can type with wine, can't type with coffee, though...too jittery.

That is, type the code above before and after what you want bolded in the text-to-type box. nm
nm
For me it isn't an account type but a dictator type ...
and that would be oriental. An oriental dictator (hahaha, that kind of sounds funny...hahaha) is the most challenging for me.
No, you don't type directly into ES. You type in Word -
or whatever their platform is, just like you did with your tapes.

Then you do your line count in Word or the platform.
You should type them. I usually type them in parentheses following the diagnosis.
x
remind me, type what they say, type what they say, type....
"He indicated that at the beginning of the year he complained of health problems recently but has gotten better."  C'mon doc, which one is it?????
Shorthand users: Is there a way to type a word, use a slash and then type another word..sm

immediately following the slash and have it expand.  For example if I needed to transcribe mass/sebaceous cyst, is there a way to use my expanded sebaceous cyst without having to back space after I type the slash mark?  TIA

I did say that there are some that no matter what
will still be on the streets. In Houston though, our mental health resources/job training/etc. are severely lacking.
I think that no matter how much
They will always need US MTs because they will always have clients who will refuse to allow their work to be done by overseas MTs.

I think that everyone should be allowed to further their education if they so desire. I am studying for the LSAT and hope to be in law shcool by next year. But, this is really something that must be worked out between the two of you. Luckily, I don't have a husband to tell me what I can and cannot do. I'll only get married when I am truly financially secure, so that I'll have the means to leave him if need be.
Does it matter?
nm
I am a CMT and it does matter
to me, as a professional MT for my own satisfaction.

The English language is ever-changing. It has changed significantly since I was in high school and college. The BOS changes, technology changes, everything changes (except God). In healthcare, we learn to adjust to change or change professions.

I work for a large healthcare corporation/satellite facility, and CMT is not even recognized of any importance in regards to pay. The fastest MT at the keyboard wins -- quantity outweighs quality. As a CMT, I do not make "one penny" more than anyone else on my team. Since I am home-based, earn excellent benefits, and the pay isn't too bad, I continue to work for this corporation.

My supervisor's (a non-MT)philosphy is the more experience one has the more money one will make (ha!)

Again, I am thankful I took the extra step to become a CMT -- I strive for the highest quality for patient safety, my initials are on every report, and each report is a portrait of my professionalism.

She even made the comment that anyone, anywhere could be certified in anything. I encouraged her to take the CMT exam, but so far she has not attempted.
Does not matter in the least
about if you even have a job. If you have anything in your name, a house, carr, checking acct, whatever, you can have a garnishment. The company that now wants to garnish your wages probably has sent you duns and they want their money. More than this, I have worked for a company before (do not know how yours is) but only one (1) garnishment and you no longer had a job. Places you work really do not like to put up with this kind of stuff.
no matter if you are an IC...
you have to commit to something be it hours per day or lines per day. I am an IC and I commit to 500 lines a day. My day is from 12 am to 12 pm. Anytime in there, all I have to do is 500. I can do more if I want, I can work on the weekends if I want, but I have to do my 500 lines a day M-F. I don't see how so many can be confused by this. Seems so simple. Everyone of us that takes a job with somebody be it IC or employee has to make some kind of commitment.
No matter
I don't agree with that. As an English speaker I could communicate well enough with another American to get a history. They may be difficult but I could get it. I mean I haven't met another American yet who I have not been able to understand at all.
I would think you could ask, but no matter
what the "average" for a specific account it, an MTSO has a right to require a certain line count of its transcriptionists to maintain employment.
I did/do this, too. It's a matter of..

constantly re-directing yourself to the dictation/transcription in real time. What I did when I found my mind wandering: I would rewind the dictation to the beginning and force myself to relisten through it (to be sure I didn't omit anything).  The problem I noticed more than leaving out dictation was duplicating it, i.e. typing the same phrase or sentence twice. It takes a day or two of this method, but that's what it took to keep me focused.

Hope this helps.

Yes, it could matter a lot sm
My company decided to make me PT and IC and stopped taxes. When spring came around I didn't have the $to pay and had to cash in my 401K. Wonder what they'll do to me next spring, as I've paid PART of the taxes as I go along, but am not up to date..........
I don't think you are going to have much say in the matter - sm
other than thanks or no thanks.

In my state in the So West, 13.oo - 15.00.

Try looking in your local newspaper, in the want ads, to get a handle on the going rate.

3 cpl no matter what
which is why VR is so problematic....if the starting document has to be heavily edited you are getting peanuts for having to take alot of time fixing it. AND you still have to listen to the whole thing so if it is a long long recording (with lots of dead air space) you really are taking a hit.  Many times I find I can type it quicker from scratch.  VR is just not there yet, or should I say the line rates for VR are just not there yet.  Companies have no way of guaranteeing that the starting document will be good, so it's like playing Russian roulette--you never know what you are going to get.
I would think it's a matter of
servers are set up to reject attachments due to spam, viruses, etc.  They probably figured if you couldn't follow the application instructions how would you follow the account instructions?
what does it matter to u
hi what does it matter to you, yes im not from US and if you dont like c my posts, please do not.  I dont care if the english is broken.  The subject matters.
No matter what anyone says, somehow
I think reverse 'cherry-picking' or whatever you call it goes on a lot more than the other way around. This is one MT who NEVER ever catches a break, no matter what time of day, what day of the week I consistently get the worst most difficult dictators, and the more I have complained the worse it gets. My pay is so low it is indicative of how desperate I am for money, perhaps another reason I get the bottom of the barrel. If in my queue an 'easy' dictator appears, it is about 85% of the time pushed down the list as the more difficult dictators pop up in their place, consistently, over and over, all day long such that I never do get those easier dictations. Continually I am told no one is assigning my work but as I mentioned, 18 years experience, that is not a reasonable answer because the odds would be all wrong...

Somebody gets those easier reports, every day, all day, but most never me. For my own sanity I sign off here and there just to take a break from the abuse but no matter what I do the only work I get is the bottom.

Not sure what causes it and frankly I do not know how anyone would know someone else is picking work unless they are doing it themselves or those people who are in charge who are specifically assigning bad work and then sitting back to see if you do it (?).

We are all vulnerable because there is no accountability and everything is covered and managed and the bottom line is there are people who somehow know how to makes umteel zillion lines but a bigger percentage of MTs like myself who struggle every day just to make minimum...
what the matter with you?
There is ONLY

Is English your 1st language?

Because you see mistakes where there are none!

Either you need a new pair of eyeglasses or a book about grammar and spelling.

For Pete's sake, you're not terminating a pregnancy, you're just typing a report after the
It's already been done before you even hear about it, and NOTHING changes regardless of whether you or someone else types it. Sheesh.
It's not funny when you're on a board where language is one skill you're selling.

If it is a good buy, it should not matter! Go for it. sm
I would not care if the street was named Poop! If it is a good buy, I'd go for it. Who cares what the street name is. You are being silly about this.
well it doesn't matter
that's for sure....
