The first couple of years I had it, I only bought the upgrade every other year but if you intend to use Turbo Tax in conjunction with Quicken, you will need the yearly upgrade. Intuit will also only support a year or two of Quicken and phases out the earlier versions. I buy the yearly upgrade now and It hasn't been all that painful. I am very happy with the software. Word of warning--support is from overseas and that just bugs me a bit.
