    About whining
I didn't mean that anyone in particular was "whining."  I know there are cherry pickers, I know there are company favorites, etc. etc.  My point is that if you, me....or anyone isn't making money doing MT and is in a constant state of agitation/unhappiness then it's time to find a better company to work for or even another line of work.  Life is too short.  Doesn't do any good to complain and wonder how someone else manages to make money, only "you" can control your environment.  I know that I have always done more than my share of the difficult dictators and I really don't mind doing it so long as it doesn't 1) interfere with my paycheck and 2) doesn't adversely affect my life.  I've only quit one company because of impossible dictators and that is the one that seems to be known to all; that after I worked for them for 7 years and suddenly all the "good" stuff (there wasn't much of that to begin with on that particular account) evaporated and I was doing nothing but the worst of the worst and I do mean WORST.  I don't know "why" that was happening but I did know when I  had had enough.
    Whining
Thanks for the excellent advice, No Whining. Although this is my first visit to this site and I have never posted any complaints about MQ before, I am definitely one of those MQ Whiners you refer to! And this is the best advice I've heard in 5 years! Who do you suggest I apply for a job with?
    i am not whining
i am merely trying to take a lighthearted look at other careers we could have chosen. you people suck! you are just mean to be mean. i think u are fooling yourselves that you are so secure in your jobs. i thought that too, i thought i was indispensable, but being an IC, i am disposable. i am just an accounts payable bill; they found a cheaper way to do and what do they do, they get rid the luxury item.
No, and I wasn't whining either.

I just made an observation that you hadn't responded yet.  And I was working myself, so I was trying to be brief.  Like I told Endiqua, it's not that I, myself, don't believe you or anyone else who is earning really good $$$ at MT.  I don't really care if other MTs believe you or not.  That's their problem.  I do believe it can be done, but I want to know how I can do it, too.  Honestly, I appreciate the advice and sharing of experiences.  I'm not trying to come across as snotty or trollish.

My last (??maybe?) question for you is how long you have been on your particular accounts, and are they low, mid or high level accounts?  I worked for both MQ and S, but I left for greener pastures because they kept bouncing me from difficult ESL account to another within a week of the last one.

I made more in the past year doing MT than every other year combined since I started several years ago.  I'm not working a part-time job as backup any more either.  I've also tripled my expander stats in the past month.  I could be satisfied with that, but I believe the potential is there to do so much more.

    MORE WHINING FROM MEEEE!!!

So NOW what do I do??? He wants to see them (it's been two months!!)  I've told him I can't AFFORD to meet him and he only offers to "give me money" (that ole dangling carrot) if I meet him

I truly WANT the kids to have a relationship w/their dad, but I honestly can't afford the drive (I live in OK; he lives in TX - our divorce says we meet, of course)  Have been told by my atty that child support and child visitation are TWO SEPERATE ISSUES.....glad he has money to meet!!

More venting....thanx everyone for your feedback - wish there were not so many DBD's and DBM's out there, but it's NICE not to be alone!!

who's whining here besides you. i'm calling

    No whining, but ANGRY
With a MQ blog you could communicate and discuss to your hearts content, while you change nothing and your children starve.  And if MQ started the hole you are in, by still being there you are handing them the shovel to make that hole deeper.  Of course it is hard switching jobs and learning new accts but how does staying at MQ with NO jobs make that any easier?  If you have children and bills, you darn well better be doing something other than just whining about what a bad company MQ is.  You can start that process now or you can do nothing but whine and still have to start that process sometime in the future, all the while you bills are adding up and you kids are getting thinner.  And another thing, why do you have to buy anything for a new program or new job?  I have never had to buy anything for any company I have worked for.  It is hard to have alot of sympathy for a person who is constantly with the "poor me" but who does nothing to pull themselves out of the mire.  And if you think I am whining, you are reading my posts all wrong.  I am not whining, I am angry that you are letting yourselves be taken advantage of.  It makes all MTs look bad,  like we cannot take a stand for ourselves but feel ourselves to be at the mercy of any company that wants to take advantage of a hard-working MT.
What are you doing here? You're whining.
Use that energy to find another job and stop subjecting the rest of us to your pity party.

    Enough already!
Tired of the whining and here is why.
If you check out the posts, you will see what we are talking about.  MQ MTs whine about the horrible company they work for but don't leave.  I am angry that the "sit back and take it" attutude they have makes all hard working MTs look bad.  I for one know I am worth more than having to put up with being used like slave labor.  Even if it means working two jobs, it is better than just sitting back and whining but doing nothing about your plight.  And with that being said, no one is saying they should not be able to beat the dead dog amoungst themselve, they just need to take it to a blog, so we don't have to be witness to it.  And btw, i DO work two MT jobs.
Correction! That should be No Whining
    .
Yeah, that's why you're the one whining
online about a grocery store clerk a full week later.  It must have been pretty bad to affect your self esteem so much that you're still dwelling on it.  Have you ever actually worked in customer service before?
Hey DP/No Whining...whoever your alter ego is this evening....

.....I guess you really don't have a life...on here all day and now all night...what a

    L-O-S-E-R!

I'm not "no whining" that is a different poster ..
and I have quite a life! Bet I make more than you, as well!!!

Lots going on for me!! I'm not complaining about anything in my life!

Losers are the ones on here who whine about how bad their jobs are, or no work, or low pay, or how people treat them, or how companies treat them, or how bad they've got it ... now THOSE are losers. Willing to whine but nothing more!!!!

:) Does that irritate you?! LMAO
LOL I have no idea who "no whining" is but
see, we sound the similar because we have a similar problem -- sick of YOU.

Ya see, all of you whiners --are just the same. Every single one of ya. MQ cheated you. MQ STILL cheats you. MQ won't change. MQ IS changing. MQ took your money. MQ mailed you check. MQ doesn't give you any work. MQ doesn't, MQ does, MQ doesn't, MQ does.

All sounds the same to us. We're sick of you.

What's embarassing is the fact that you THINK you are really MTs! HOW FUNNY!!! Let me tell you something: Real MTs take pride in their work and control of their professional lives. They give all for companies that treat them well and they leave companies that don't. They don't stand for it.

I am not "no whining". I am a completely different person, have no idea who he/she is, don't really care. I'm just tired of hearing you complain over what you can change. It's petty, cheap, childish, self-centered, and downright unprofessional.

I've made over $200 today with MQ. How about you? Have you made any money today? NO? Hmmmm, wonder why!?!?!?!!!!!

My son, who is 14, most definitely YES! He is constantly whining to me about being bored, but...
my daughter is starting Kindergarten this year and she is my baby and my last and I am going to be a blubbering fool probably the entire first week of school!
quit freaking whining and do your job
    xx
And you are doing nothing more than whining. Re-read the post.
Not sticking up for ANYONE, just stating a fact. Get over yourself.
Talk is fine but enough with the repeated whining. sm
I think you are right.  You should not leave MQ until you have another job and absolutely, you should not settle for just anything.  While it is true MQ has put you were you are today, there is nothing that says you have to stay down.  Take your future in your own capable hands and run with it.  And I don't agree that where MQ goes, there goes the rest of us.  I would like to think MQ will teach us all a lesson as to what NOT to put up with.  And if we all make a stand against companies like MQ, I would hope all of our futures can be brighter.  I think that also means not sitting quietly by while our jobs are offshored.  Refuse to deal with offshore call centers and service centers.  It is a small step but we have to start somewhere.  Management of these companies has no job except for us, for that matter, state employees on up to the top, have no jobs without us.  There is no reason for any of us to take bad treatment without fighting back.  I think the future CAN be changed, if we all stick together and make our voices be heard. But whining incessantly just makes people turn a deaf ear to your complaints after a while.  A blog would give all MQers a place to support and sympathize with each other.
so "no whining" - still no SELF CONTROL, huh? The MQ draws you like a

    to blood------------

you are the one pathetic.  Those of us who are trying to figure out how to get out of the muck MQ put us in, come here to share things and hopefully come out of this disaster in one piece.

    Like others have said - -0 - - - stay away.

    Don't click on things MQ.

Don't YOU get it?  We don't need your attacks.  We don't need your smart butt remarks.  If you don't have anything constructive to post to those of us in a bit of a mess, then don't say anything and move on.

Otherwise we are going to think you are MQ management, and we wouldn't want to think they would stoop that low.

That is because No whining/Barney is taking her meds.
    x
That is because No whining/Barney is taking her meds.

Your tone sounds 100% whining and bitter.
That's why I call your posts whining and bitter! The other poster stated her case in a mature way, using stats as her back up. No whining, no bitterness. I have not formed an opinion on the AAMT either way to date, but am leaning more pro-AAMT by just the style of postings - those supporting it come off as calm, professional, and mature, while those not supporting it sound emotional, bitter, and whining. Just my opine and reaction to the posts!! Debate much? Its a great skill, and long lost in America...
Chill in that you're all complaining and whining here, which is getting you NO where fast! Plus i
just soooooo tiresome to hear it 24/7. Again, its been going on forever. Period. And I assume you are referring to MQ, and then go on to imply how the service who treats their MTs right will have the most MTs, or whatever. Well, MQ has about 10K at any given moment!  Unethical to route work as you see fit?  Never!  That's the ropes! Some MTs just take everything soooooo personally.  Its not good for their mental health, literally.  Hey, I get a run of 10 reports from a great dictator whom I haven't heard in, say, 6 months, I just type them and move on! Perhaps I pause a microsecond to think, Hmmmm...he hasn't been around much, but glad he's here now!  To hear these whining complaining MTs, they just sit there and start plotting how this doctor got to their pool, where he's been in the interim, and its ALWAYS Indian MTs as the scapegoat, or the cherry pickers, or the VR got all the "good stuff".  They never just accept that its just THE WAY IT IS.  The roll of the dice - the MTs on line before them or with them - why does it always have to be something other than just fate?  Its so reflective of an unhappy persona, and its so self defeating.  Type it and be happy, or get another job!
Same goes for the ridiculous whining from marrieds and cohabitators...hahaha
It is just as "oh please" to hear marrieds and those with live-ins complain about all they have to "put up with". Same logic applies there -- they asked for their situation as well.

I personally think that parents deserve a little extra appreciation, period.

I have a softer opinion toward single parents as I have been one and I can honestly say that of all the married women I know, I have never seen one marriage that I would give up my lifestyle now for theirs.

So, I suppose we should ALL stop complaining about our own personal lives! We each and every made the decisions that got us here and we make the choice to stay!!

So, in trying to be fair, I'll not do any more extra cheerleading for single parents as long as I don't have to hear the same whine song from marrieds/cohabitators!
QUESTION: Why are you still there? Quit whining and go to a different company. If you stay there,
    pp
Now who is whining, "oh poor baby you have to scroll"

Whine to somebody else.  MQ MTs who have been "taken" by this

company have no other option but to try to discussion and communicate

on such a web site.  Nobody at MQ will be honest.  And if you have to scroll

well so be it, you are in a far better situation than us MTs who are trying to

figure out how to get out of the hole MQ has put a lot of us in financially.  Most

people by the way don't have the ability to just up and switch jobs.  We have

bills, children, and it takes time to learn new accounts, new programs, buy new

things for new programs.  remember? or are you so independently wealthy that

    these things don't affect you?

You had our compassion but the constant whining has turned that to antipathy. nm
    :)
Then maybe you will start talking about me and quit repeating the whining about MQ. nm
    :)
I never claimed to be great or perfect, I am just sick of the whining.
All we hear is "we need to discuss, we need to talk, we need to figure out what to do."  I have offered some suggestions of what you might try to pull yourselves out of the mire, since you can't seem to think of any suggestions yourselves.  The collective whining is getting you nowhere.  How many times do you think you need to whine "poor me" before the situation changes itself?  I hate to tell you, but no amount of whining is going to change your plight, only action on your part will do that.  Anyway, bottom line is, whine all you want together, just take it to a blog so we don't have to be subjected to it.
Incessant whining is NOT venting. Beat your dead dog in private. nm
    :p
Off topic whining. Got an interesting phone call today.
DH used to have a pretty good job until the proverbial stuff hit the fan a few months ago.  With no warning whatsoever and no bad performance reviews ever, he was told his job had been phased out and he was denied his overdue promotion.  That left him unemployed and scavenging for a job.  He did find a job at maybe a third of what he used to make.  I doubled my workload and cut back the budget to try to make up some of the difference, but things still really stink financially.  The stress is about killing me with the extra hours on top of everything else I do.  Anyway, the phone call today was to let us know that he should never have been denied his promotion and his job will not be phased out now.  Unfortunately, it's too late after how his boss handled it and what was said.  He won't go back to working for that person ever again.  Sigh...  I can't blame.  I wouldn't either.  It's nice to know we were right, but it doesn't fix anything.
Whining incessantly anonymously on a message board is far from "fighting back and standing up for
your rights".  Sheesh. That's how silly you all are.  Blah, blah, blah on here 24/7 and I guarantee you that's the extent of your yaw.  Otherwise, you'd be sharing some pertinent communications you've had with the people who MATTER - like your supervisors, managers, etc.  And I don't like change?  Sweetie, I go with the flow and have changed with this career every step of the way - starting back typing on a manual typewriter with 8 colored carbon copies and matching colors of "liquid paper" and listening to tapes, and now using state-of-the-art platforms with voice recognition as well.  I'm happy, and still love my job. Thank you for your unstated concern!  You have a problem with your work flow, dictators, you call your superiors and have it taken care of.  If they don't "change" it to your liking, that's your answer - the handwriting is on the wall, so to speak! You're getting what they want to give you regarding work! Pounding your chest in words on this message board under an assumed name is nothing short of ludicrous.  and over and over and over and over and over again....ya, ya, ya, cherry pickers, Indians, cherry pickers, Indians....yawn yawn.  Ya take up good board space and don't realize how totally FOOLISH you look... snore.... But its your "breath", and your precious energy wasted, so go for it!!  Heavens you should direct your complaints to the proper channel!!!!
He calls me daily whining that he doesn't have any money. Then calls me names when I
a check.  He hasn't looked for a job, hasn't even read the want ads, I'm sure.  He told me he realizes he can't live without me.  My paycheck is what he can't live without!  I feel so humiliated and angry sometimes that I put up with him for as long as I did!
    getting started

If you live in southern CA, on the job seeker board Chronicle Transcripts is hiring newbies.  I used to be a lead transcriptionist for them when they were located in my town.  Nice people and you will get very good training from them.  What I have found is the smaller trans companies usually are willing to take in trainees or medical trans school graduates.  Also, the federal govt and state govt have medical transcriptionists..You can check about testing with the govt.  Good luck!

I have a BSN and started doing
MT due to the world's most complicated pregnancies - just couldn't be on my feet.   At first, the $$ wasn't so great - impossible to transcribe much with a baby in the house.  Every year tho I have made more than the year before.  My boys are now 8 and 12 - summers are difficult but not impossible.  I periodically look into going back into nursing, but the hassles it would entail just aren't worth the $$.  I work about 5 hours a day and will end up making around $28 K this year.
I am 33 now and started at age

    /

    It's already started here.
Gas prices are up, groceries are up, other supplies are up.  My brother is in construction and said that materials and wood prices have doubled in the past week.  Our income is maybe half what it was just over a year ago because we've both changed jobs or had contracts end on us.  We've had a lot of unexpected expenses recently that cleaned out all of our savings.  Christmas is coming.  School just started so we had to buy clothes and supplies there.  I'm half-panicked here trying to find a better paying job than what I have now.  I just really can't take a lot of time off for testing or post my resume because my current employer will know I'm looking for another job.  Then again, I don't even know if it's possible for me to make more money at MT than I am now.  I still don't see how people can do 250+ lph or make $30+ per hour.  What do they have that I don't?  Length at employment?  More word Expander entries?  A better account and platform?
    when i started doing ASR
mgmt told me that 'down the road' there would be 'adjustments' in the pay for ASR, after people were well-trained and productive on it. I later opted out -- didn't like it at all. HOWEVER, if it is in fact so much quicker (as it was said to be) for the MT to do those reports, then it stands to reason that you would not be paid the same at the same rate as someone transcribing a report from scratch. I don't see what the problem is about the purported pay reduction. Just consider what you've been getting as 'gravy' and what you will be getting as fair. Then again, if you don't want to do ASR, then opt out.
    Also just started with them...
    :)
    You started it now !!
    nm
I just started a new job.
I was hoping this would be THE job.  I told myself that this is the very last MT company I will try to work for.  Unfortunately, I'm experiencing the same things at this company that I quit other nationals for.  I don't know what to do.  I'm tired of job hunting, learning new platforms, and trying to adjust to multiple account specs.  I'm tired of being told that "we're different" or "we are the best" only to find that it's no different or better.  I don't know if I should stick this one out in the hopes that it will get better or go get a job as a waitress.  This really stinks with Christmas coming and bills to pay.  I really wanted this to work.  What else is there for me, though?  I don't want to go back to the fulltime, nose to the grindstone, kids in daycare garbage.  I really enjoy MT, too.
    Started at 4:00 a.m.

Delivered newspapers, did MT for 4 hours, went out for a few last minute things, went grocery shopping, finished wrapping presents, finished crocheting my new grandson's baby blanket, cleaned the kitchen did the dishes and looked after my 2-year-old terror twin granddaughters for 2 hours before I finally called my daughter at 6:00 p.m. and said, "COME AND GET THEM."

I love them dearly, but they are 175% wired with the whole Christmas thing and I am just getting over the flu.

    I know, I know. . . .I'm TYPE A all the way.

I can't believe I've made it this late. I'm going night night.

    Started out....
I started out with MT on a selectric II. We used carbon paper for copies and no more than 2 corrections were allowed per page (original was corrected with white out, the rest had to be erased with that special little typewriter eraser). I learned very quickly to be accurate and proofread as I transcribed.

We also had no Stedman's word books in those days - just Dorlands, a little red book called Surgical Secretary or something like that, Tessier's, and a couple of others - about 5 or 6 books in total.

We used to call pharmacies to ask for spelling of new drugs, called Surgery and Central Supply for spelling of new equipment, new dressings, etc.

I worked in a large teaching hospital. We had access to the doctors and more than 1 time I had an MD standing behind me looking over my shoulder while I typed his report!

    STARTED OUT THE OLD WAY
I also took typing on a manual and one of my first jobs was transcribing in pathology with 5 carbon copies - yikes. I like my computer and so does my wrists.

    To get started...

$450 bucks will get you everything you need to get started. Here is the item:

    Transcription Kit.

That transcription kit comes with the digital recorder you can give to your client, and for you-all the software, foot pedal and the headset. That will be enough to get you on your feet on your own.

My dog started doing this (sm)
and I took him in for a UA. Two days into the script he stopped!
Sure, it's possible. We all started somewhere. sm

Get hold of some practice dictations, and then dive in!  If you have the proper references and good skills to begin with, you'll do fine.  Go for it!

    Re: Getting started
I am a 12-year claims examiner veteran. I am wanting to cross-over into the home Medical transcriptionists field. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get started; what test to take to be recognized; and how long will it take? please let me know. thank you in advance for your input.
    RE: Getting started
Do you have the website address for MT? Thanks
I just started as an IC and get
7.5 cents a gross line for transcription and 4.5 cents a gross line on QA.  Can anyone let me know how that compares?  I have not done this before so I don't know.
oh please do not get me started....SM

I'm not going to get into it.......that's for sure.  Suffice to say he idolizes his dad who emphatically states in his late 80s that the holocaust never happened.

Yeah, right.....don't get me started......I'll hush for now!
