Normals in Expansion File

Just be aware that your company may have set a size limit for individual expansions to prevent transcriptionists from making "normals" that are not really normal, that is, not always exactly what the doctor says.

Rename your normal.dot file to something else then restart Word. It will create a new file.

I think it is the same type of file, so rename it and replace your autocorrect file with your DQS us

Help..I lost my word file. How can I retreive a file that has been changed? sm

I was working on a large file and had saved it in Word. I then went back to work on the file and hit a key that made the page go blank.  When I went to close the document it asked me to save any changes on the document. I answered yes, and now when I click on that document it is all blank! Shouldnt the previous info saved be there, even if the current stuff is not? Please help me!! Thank you

Depends on the file format of the Short Cuts file.
ShortHand comes with a utility file that can import various formats. You can get that file with the trial download of SH.

You can save the SH file in a text file and import to IT that way. sm
You may have to do some cleanup in the SH text file, but it sure would be faster than re-entering them all manually.
File taxes under the name on file w Social Security....
Name on W2 doesn't have to match, but your tax return has to match SS records. They don't want your marriage license or anything else. Did that for 13 years as instructed by IRS. Didn't have to change it with SS until state changed rules requiring drivers license to match SS records. Still use my maiden name in some limited circumstances.
It's only when I use an expansion
at the beginning of the sentence that I can't get it to automatically capitalize the first letter. I have the auto-cap option checked and it works for regular typing. I have been planning on getting Instant Text forever now and just keep putting it off. Probably going to do it soon because this is driving me crazy. Thanks.
expansion, expansion, expansion
Use your expansion tools. I have just about every acronym under the sun set up into my expansions. It really helps.
Expansion help
I have a great primary account, make usually more than 2000 lines a day, and I have several of the same docs who say the same things repeatedly, so I have their "normal" ROS or PE set up as an expansion.  I make sure to proof those really well for changes.  And I have any phrase that is three words long as an expansion.  Like ctax for clear to auscultation, rrrx for regular rate and rhythm, etc.  And if a word is long, like hepatosplenomegaly, I make an expansion for it with hsmx.  You just need to play around and see what you come up with...
My normals sm.
I had a supervisor accuse me of holding hostage MY normals.  I reminded her that they were documents I had brought to the job as I had done this doctor at another national previously.  Anyway, don't the ding dongs realize they can just d/l a copy of a finished job and, tada!, there is a copy of a doc for that doctor.
What are normals?
I am new to MT and I keep reading "normals" are these macros?
normals
After creating a normal, ctrl-N to save it. Should be able to retrieve it after.
Normals
We use "normals" too but I change them to fit the dictation. I was always told those are mostly for reference to help us get through the dictations. Not every MD dictates the exact same Normal and even when there's Normals for each particular MD, they don't always dictate it exactly the same. The only time I would leave "as is" is, for instance, a radiologist says "Chest x-ray, #36, end" and I would just pull normal #36 and send off. Of course, if the Normal doesn't fit the title(I.e.#36 is a head CT) I would still pull it but mark for the QA/practice manager to see the error.
Not for what it does besides just text expansion.

word expansion
By MS Word expander, I guess you mean the one built into Word. In addition to this, I make my own "normals" and just copy and paste them into a Word document to retrieve when I need them.
I don't use DocQscribe nor do I know what the expansion

formula looks like, but if you can open it up in Notepad and manipulate the formula to look like this, tp=the patient, then you can import them into EXText.  I don't have my EXText in front of me so this is from rough memory.  Once you have your expansions in the above formula, save them in Notepad on your desktop.  In EXtext click on Options, Import file from Text(?), in the drop down box click on Desktop, click on your saved list, put an = sign in the delimiter box, click on Ok or import or whatever the next step is (lol...told you it was from rough memory).  Once these are imported you'll need to save your ESP list.  It is really simple to import once you have your expansions in the right formula.  I'll check back here in a little bit and answer any questions I can.  I'll be working tonight and may be able to give better step-by-step instructions once I have the actual program up and running.

text expansion?
I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good text Expander program. I have never used one before, and there are so many out there, I am just looking for some advice as to what might be a good one, easy to use, for a person who has no experience with text expansion. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Oh and keep the standards/normals for themselves

NO EXPANDERS AND NO NORMALS

You don't believe me?  I really don't care...That's my line count.....and I do it without Expanders or normals. I love my job, I'm the best at what I do and I always strive to do better than the day before.  Maybe you could do the same if you weren't so negative....

Boss asking for normals
Is anybody working for a company where your boss is asking you to share your NORMALS.  Be very careful.  My company is asking us to share your normals and come to find out who they want us to share with, overseas.  Also asking questions like, who are the best dictators, etc. Also experiencing block of work just disappearing.  Several hours just gone.  Anybody else.
I'd say "What normals?" (sm)
I had an OM tell me that he was contemplating not paying for macros. I said, "Oh, I don't have to worry. I don't use macros, I use an expander." That was the end of that. I'm sure he had to run back to his office to try to figure out what an Expander is! LOL

DocQscribe normals

I will be leaving my company at the end of the week without a job to take its place.  It's taken me several years to accumulate all my normals, and I hate to think I will have to start over creating them.  Does anyone know how to transfer/move all the normals from DocQScribe to Word or to save them on my hard drive.  I hate to think I'll have to start over creating all new normals.  Thanks for your help.

do you mean making normals
for same docs?
Yes, I mean making normals. nm :)

The majority of normals are seen
Normals can also be a repetitive statement that the dictator makes, which you then turn into a normal so you do not have to keep typing the same thing over and over again.  Some use shortcut keys or Expander program.  I am not an expert on any of these as I do not use them.  Some who work in MS Word use autocorrect to expand terms or phrases that are said time and time again by a specific dictator.  I use autocorrect in Word and like it.  Hope this helps.
I go to alt-E and bring up the expansion menu sm
then I add a new header in there. That way, the new header created will be saved and usable in future reports. Maybe there is a better way - I do not claim to be a DQS genius, but this does work for me
Word Expansion Programs
I am trying to get a general idea of the best/worst Word Expansion programs available.  What do you use and how does it compare to others?  I know of Shorthand, PRD+, MedBrain, and good ol' Auto Correct.  Please give me your opinions.  Thank you very much ~
Why not add them to your expansion software with different endings? Like

Should expand when using the period after an expansion - sm
Shorthand should expand when you use the period after an expansion. For example... I have "tpi" as "the patient is" -- and if I type "tpi." I will get the patient is. (including the period)
Newbie expansion software help

Yikes! I need expansion software help. Can someone tell me how Instant Text works? Do I need to enter words into the program to in order to use it? I have downloaded a free trial of ShortHand for Windows, but it doesn't come with very many words. How does a newbie MT use expansion software if it doesn't have any words in the glossary?

Sorry, I know this is very basic. Unfortunately my MT program has not covered this, and I'm not trying to figure it out!

Thanks in advance!

Just wondering which expansion program you use? *nm*

For those who use Shortcut expansion program...
I have been a ShortHand user for the past 2 years and prior to that Smartype. I need to try ShortCut to see if I can get it to work in CS.net (Chartscript) since my Shorthand does not. But before I download the trial version, I wanted to find out: Does it also offer a "suggestion window" like Shorthand...like a preview window to see that the expansions are as you type? I relied on that with Shorthand (and Smartype) and hate to give that feature up. (I can't afford Instant Text)
Word Expansion Suggestion
I was wondering what is the best to different in expansions between laparoscopy, laparoscope, laparoscopic, arthroscope, arthroscopy, arthroscopic. Does anyone has any suggestions? I use the Expander in Word. Thanks so much!
Better yet, if it's REALLY good, make an expansion for it. sm
Especially with op notes ... once you get a feel for a dictator's normal patter, whether that be an operative procedure, ROS, PE section, closing, or whatever, make a shortcut/expansion for it ...

I do the same thing for letter addresses, since the same addressees seem to keep popping up over and over (i.e., docsmitha would bring up all of the Smiths I have saved with a first name starting with an A) -- saves a lot of time in the long run.

Wow, getting far afield from the original question here; I must need that first cup of coffee.
Has anyone been able to transfer their normals/standards from
nm
No way, Jose. My normals are MINE. Don't let them do this! nm

I never give anyone my normals. I have my own accounts and one
but it was a nice account - a surgery center with 200+ surgeons.  I told the surgery center I just couldn't continue doing the account, gave them the names of a couple of other MT companies they might want to contact.  They did contact them, elected to go with one of them, and then while I was finishing up with them while they transitioned to the new MT Company, they asked asked me for MY normals to give to the other MT Company.  Okay, there were SOME normals that the hospital associated with the surgery center had given me to begin with, but I felt that it was the responsibility of the hospital to give those to the new transcription service, not my responsibility.  Besides, I had changed the templates as needed, etc.  But most of the normals I had were ones that I spent a couple of years developing.  Now I wasn't just going to hand those over to a new MT service to make it easy on them.  Those were something I spent a LOT of time on and were, in my opinion, MY property.
Why would you create normals for doctors
and/or accounts you don't even know? That makes less than no sense. Do you just create your own things that you consider normal? Seriously trying to figure it out - I must be missing something.
Are you still cutting and pasting normals? I can't do
nm
What aggravates me are normals and samples
full of obvious typos and stylistic issues that we MTs get dinged for. In fact, I remember having a normal op at one place that had a made-up instrument name in it. It kept coming up on the spell check. Took me months to finally find the proper name.

I've come to expect sloppy and/or poorly written emails from managers and admin staff otherwise.
EXText Question About Normals
Hi,

I've had trouble recently being unable to retrieve normals I've made.

When I make a personal normal and then try to access it during the current work session, it does not show up in the list.  This is true even after having been logged out of the system entirely, such as overnight and then returning to work the next day.

If I try to re-do/re-create the normal using the same "Properties" info., I get a ping and message stating that that normal already exists.  Any info. on this?

Also:

Could there be a limit to how many normals, personal or shared, can be created on one person's list?

Can personal normals be deleted?

I need more help than I've already gotten, so I'm posting here.  (My next step is contacting Dictaphone)

Thanks.

Also have errors in normals I am told to use--sm
Does your platform allow you to have Transcriptionist normals? Mine does and i have corrected the normals and saved them in my set of normals. I also complained for over a year and they were not corrected. One of the most notable is an ultrasound abdomen that has the technique for an MRI. The transcriptionist has to remember to make the correction on every report she transcribes.
Expanders and normals...not mormals
just felt the need to correct your mistakes since you are picking apart others.
yes of course I use tons of expanders. At the most 25% normals though.
