Oh, IBS..maybe..maybe not..sm

I was hospitalized twice this summer with partial small bowel obstruction and told I had IBS..After many WRONG suggestions by my MD, I finally found that a stool softener helps more than anything. They'll tell you to use a laxative but that will only produce severe cramping. Try daily yogurt (be sure it has "active" cultures..not "made from" but containing active cultures. "made from" means that the cultures have been cooked..you want "active" cultures. This helped me a lot initially and then I started using stool softener like Dulcalax,,but nonbrand name is cheaper and same. You really want to nip it in the bud because this is a miserable condition to deal with chronically. Doctors will try to sell you "Zelnorm" but it cost $99/2-week supply. MDs don't know &*)(& about this and they will tell you all kinds of things and try to put you on antidepressants..blah, blah..they really don't know and IBS is just a "soup bowl" name for it. If she starts vomiting then it's time to get to the ER..she could have an obstruction. It is a miserable feeling. Good luck. Oh yeah, what they will do in the hospital is NG suction (for obstruction) and clear liquid diet for bowel rest...perhaps CT scan to see what could be causing an obstruction and possible surgical correction. Try the stool softener first and yogurt daily. I also added fish oil to my daily regimen.
