Oppression

It's all in the psychology of the hunt.  It takes a certain kind of person to be a recruiter/MTSO owner.  I truly believe that the clients of these MTSOs are the source of the scheduling "problems" or needs; however, the MTSOs become so incredibly frustrated, sometimes even ANGRY, when they meet an MT that they are not totally able to manipulate.  A component of the master/slave relationship is that of oppression.

If we are going to hang anyone, or point blame, let's start with the facilities, the hospitals, clinics, etc., who fuel this industry.  It is not only their greediness, but the very nature of the managers at these facilities, who create our biggest problems.  For instance, I know of one account that is incredibly difficult from our end, basically because the managers at the facility choose to only outsource the dictations of their most horrendous dictators.  The exception is on the weekends, from Friday through Monday morning, when we receive all of the reports dictated from this facility because their inhouse staff doesn't work on weekends.  This is also a facility that has some really weird and time-consuming specifications, which were written by the facility, not by the MTSO.  The MTSO would lose the account in a minute if they did not agree to the rules established by the HIM manager.  It is also an account where the HIM manager apparently is unable or unwilling to actually communicate with the dictators; he or she allows the dictators to think that we are magicians.

I've been interviewed by owners/recruiters, only to discover that what they are looking for is more someone whom they can manipulate, rather than someone who is totally capable.  I am nothing more to them than a working tool; a piece of equipment used to produce their product.  Some of them actually lie during the interview; go figure!

In other words, if there are two applicants, both equally experienced and able to do the job, which one do you think will be hired?  Of course, it's the one who is easier to manipulate, the first step being the gullibility test administered by the recruiter during the interview.  They are really impressed if an applicant is totally agreeable to everything (including working as an IC while being controlled as an employee) and asks very few questions.  Obviously, they are looking for the equipment that will yield the highest profit.

On a side note, there are some MTs out there who will be easily manipulated and bend to every need of the MTSO.  They will even defend the practices of the MTSO, despite the fact that they are being USED; I truly believe that they have self-hypnotized themselves in an effort to survive psychologically, in order to preserve their own self-images.  They cannot possibly admit to themselves or others that they are in a BAD situation, as that would interfere with their own vision of their perfect selves; it is an ego preserving function.  They will remain in the BAD situation and defend it, much the same process that occurs with those who stay in bad marriages.  They are unable to see that they are experiencing inertia, a sense of helplessness and hopelessness that their situation cannot be improved; they may be chronically unhappy, but they are comfortable remaining in the BAD situation, or they are totally clueless and cannot see the truth.  At any rate, these MTs fuel such businesses and make life for the rest of us difficult.   But, MTSOs love these types of MTs.  Sad, huh?

It seems that, even if I attempt to make it clear from the beginning that I want to work on certain days and hours, they still try to convince me to mold to their needs.  This happens all the time.  They attempt to see how far they can push me, right from the beginning.  In my experience, those who reject me because I'm not to be easily owned, are those for whom I would never have wanted to work for in the first place.  By the same token, my success with any company depends a great deal on my agreement to be USED for whatever schedule/worktype, etc. that they WANT.

It is sad, but true, but there do not appear to be any companies to work for in this industry where the needs of the MTs are considered.  Actually, I am not so sure that there are any companies in any industry these days that truly considers the needs of the workers, but there may be rare exceptions, especially in small companies.

Anyway, if I am to feel comfortable continuing to work in this industry, I feel that I must succeed at self-hypnotizing myself into a place where I can function in a robotic fashion and not care how I am being treated.  I must allow myself to be oppressed to some degree.  This is reality, as I see it.  Congratulations to any of you who have discovered something different.
