I think it is here to stay, but won't be quite as popular as some companies may think

The whole reasoning behind VR is to decrease cost to clients and to speed up TAT (well that and to increase revenue for MTSOs).  But, just as more and more clients are starting to find out about offshore outsourcing, the cost effectiveness may not be such an advantage.  Being on VR for several months now, it seems like even the sloppiest work is submitted for the sake of getting it out quickly.  I've found, and it has been reported here repeatedly, that those on VR are told not to "pretty it up", just make sure it's accurate.  Even the banned abbreviations on the JHACO list are allowed in favor of quick editing.  Things that never would be acceptable in straight typing are allowed in VR.  Sooner or later this is going to catch up and the money saved on VR will just switch to risk management.  What once seemed like a big money saver will end up costing them more in the long run, just like outsourcing to India.

Also, it is a proven fact that those who are very high producers in straight typing (1500 to 1600 lines a day) will most likely not make the money that new MTs or less skilled MTs will.  Those who are producing approximately 1000 to 1100 lines a day will have no problem doubling that.  With some MTSOs cutting the VR editing rates to 55% of base line count, it isn't feasible for experienced, skilled high producers to work on VR at half the base rate. Thus, a lot of skilled MTs will be moving on to companies without VR.  Without some of the tools required, VR mandates that the editors will correctly use and spell terms that would otherwise be done by expanders.  A new MT isn't going to catch the "mistakes" as quickly or as often as a highly-skilled MT with years and years under the belt. That, too, will contribute to the lower quality of finished product. As far as increased TAT, it might increase it a little but full editing isn't as quick as QA editing, so the increase in TAT isn't going to be that dramatic IMO.

I can see VR being advantageous for the quicker, easier reports such as radiology and ER, and I can see it catching on for a while.  But, I think sooner or later it will trend back to the clients wanting professionalism over quick, money-saving efforts that will end up costing them more in the long run either in risk management or outright lawsuits.

medications

I don't know the answer to all of the questions but I do know that nurses are supposed to check medication dosages and know enough about medications to catch an error before causing harm to the pt.  That is why the nurses pass meds. You can train someone the technical process of handing out meds, giving shots, etc...but in order to protect the pt, someone at the knowledge level of a nurse needs to act as a safeguard.

I would think one of the "dangerous" parts of incorrect transcription is that if it were used as a reference for further charting, it could have a cascade effect of creating many more incorrect entries and messing up the record in a big way.

But, as stated above, I do not know the answer for sure.

As far as medications
I usually Google it and even if I misspelled it, it will come up with some suggestions as to what it might be, same with terms. I love google. I also have the monthly MPR book sent to my home, although they seem to miss alot of the new ones too and I am considering letting my prescription lapse. I have one for lab values too, but I thought you posted that yesterday. ??
Prescription medications...sm

If you don't shop the price of your prescriptions with various pharmacies you should do so.  I just checked around on a prescription that I take and I got a variance of up to $9 a month depending on which pharmacy would be filling it.  Now that adds up in a hurry!

Rename and reuse

That's annoying huh?

Another thing you can do is reuse your entry  for something new - you should be able to change the title and the text...HTH

Do not rename the file.
The MSO1033 .acl file is the English file. You'll see other files with different numbers representing different languages. It's a bit confusing because Word has quite a few .acl files. When trying to locate the file you need, it's easier to find if you add an entry and search for the file by the date you created the entry.
I have always used Saunders Pharmaceutical
Word Book and get a new one about every 3 years. I also use rxlist.com and Drugs@FDA - link -- http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/drugsatfda/index.cfm?fuseaction=Search.Search_Drug_Name

Longest list of medications
For me personally it was 17 - at that point I changed doctors and finally got some relief for my fibromyalgia.  I think I bought this doctor a car, put his kids through private school and probably financed his house.  He saw me once a week for two years and very regularly after that.  I often wondered why he wanted me to come in so often and how he always found something else wrong with me.  Come to find out that I really didn't have all of the problems that he was diagnosing me with and all I really needed was help with my blood pressure and a pain management specialist (which he did not believe in prescribing narcotics).  As for work - I can't remember the longest list of medications a patient was prescribed - but in doing acute care and with the elderly patients - it was always a high number.
Think you'd have to rename each of them .doc files so Word

I use Saunders Pharmaceutical Word
Book and have for years. I usually only buy one however every 2 or 3 years as I do use a lot of medication web sites also.
Here is a pretty good link for medications. sm
Let's see if this link works.
I agree, don't like the QLDB but I do like Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book
That is one book I purchase yearly.

I'm thinking about buying Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book 2007 on CD/ROM...sm..

I've never bought a drug book on CD/ROM but I'd like to try it.  I'm guessing it would be quicker than looking everything up in a book.  I'm trying to get away from looking things up online because everytime I stop and look something up online I end up checking email, ebay, all the boards, etc., and not focusing on my work.  They're so much temptation on the internet!

I've bought one book (QLDB) back in 2000 so I need an update!  They sell the Saunders Drake & Drake Pharmaceutical Word Book  on CD/ROM and in the book form as a package or you can buy them separately.  I'm wondering why someone would buy both.

Any advice before I buy would be appreciated.

Its actually becoming popular!
It started locally in a Chicago ball park I think, and they had a segment on CBS news the other day about it. They cut the donut in half and use those two halves as the buns, along with bacon and cheese. Everyone they interviewed said they really liked it, even the reporter! Kind of sweet and sour cheeseburger, don't U think?
This may not be a popular opinion, but I would be
If this is a child you're talking about, I would probably err on the side of protecting the child. A call can be placed to CPS anonymously, and you won't have to risk your job. You can simply call anonymously and state that during the performance of your job, this situation presented itself. If you've ever see the consequences sexual abuse brings to a child's life, then you would know it's worth much more than a job anyway.
Beading and knitting are popular
right now. I've been doing both separately and in combination for longer than I care to admit but they are *in* again. Glass mosaics and polymer clay are another couple of things I've been dabbling in for a while. There are just so many options, it's hard to suggest just 1 thing. Maybe you could take her on a *date* to some of the craft stores like Joanne Fabrics or Michael's and see what she seems interested in. If she finds the right hobby to suit her personality and talent, I predict she will be totally addicted (like so many of us) so watch out! Then again, she is lucky she has you to enable her. LOL Good luck!
It's so popular, too. Everybody is naming their kid Thusnelda. nm

I wonder if local newspapers would be popular for them, and

I think acute care is more popular
I do both and as far as work I don't really favor one over the other. I get about the same lines with either one.
Actually RadGuy wuz very popular when my mom named me that in 1958. Hmm...

So he was a Beatle, so he was popular and put out good music.
Marvelous, but he was no hero.  Idol, yes...hero, no.
Pretty kewl...like the "how popular is your name" thingy, too (nm)

Most popular are Instant Text, Spellex, and ShortHand, I think. Visit their websites and

Spellex has a Medical/Pharmaceutical Spell Checker called Spellex-Anywhere
Spellex has a Medical/Pharmaceutical Spell Checker. The program is called Spellex-Anywhere they have a free trial on there website so you can try if before you buy. I hope this helps :).

MT companies negotiate with the insurance companies until they get what they want

It is strictly up to the agreement between the employer and the insurance company.  Your new employer can tell you what the pre-existing clause is in your new policy.  Some require proof of insurance for the past 12 months.  It may say something like if a diagnosis has not been made NOR treatment received within the last __ months.  Not good when companies negotiate with a pre-existing clause in order to get a lower rate.  Better check with your HR with your new company before doing anything.  It really gets hairy !

Most companies do no use their only files (HIPAA). They use files provided by other companies, serv
If you can get through the test files, then the sound quality on the actual company files is better. And, the dictation is never as bad as the test files, plus you have QA to help with hard blanks.
MT companies
Hi, there are many MT companies out there, and there are some that you should steer clear of. The one company who scammed me real good for 2 years was amatrans-am out of Valrico, FL. If you see an ad for them run in the other direction. Or just check the BBB. They have really scammed a whole lot of people unfortunately....but there are better ones. But just stay away from the ones that ask you to do like 1,000 lines a day. You won't be able to do it, or if you could you would be dragging yourself off to bed, only to have to get up early the next morning to begin it all over again.

After a couple of years, I am now working, but mind you, I am really a semi-newbie, and I only make 4 cpl. The money won't make you rich, but the experience can be very rewarding, and what you learn keeps your mind working. If you want any more info, feel free to e-mail me brooklyngirl1112@hotmail.com

Are all companies like SS?
I think I will stick to my day job god....
Why is it okay for other companies
to be informed about and not this one. My heart bleeds for these MTs. Obviously, it is not just one employee posting here. Can you imagine the frustration of watching your fingers move more and more and your paycheck go down without being told or informed why. They have a right to vent and warn. I want to be warned ahead of time before I make a mistake. No slander involved, facts are facts and that is it.
What companies, if any,
. . . hire and actually promote professionals who have forgotten more than many MTs know, have years and years of experience, work when needed, don't rock the boat, and produce excellent work?  At my company, the editors and managers usually have just a few years of experience as an MT, if any, and many have no management experience.  Some managers have never even seen a typed document.  That doesn't make sense.  What companies give one a chance to actually grow with them?  Any of them?  How do the promotions go to those who took an on-line class and have been an MT for 2 years?  Kudos to anyone who could answer this . . . Bewildered

What are some of the best small companies that you have worked for?  Does anyone live out in the sticks and is on dial-up?

MT COMPANIES

do u like working for this company.  Do they treat you fairly.  I was told to download and they will give me first files to fit me with proper account.  They have been great.  Does this continue?  Please let me know.  While on the subject does anyone have any information on Amphion, Medware, QTmedical, Orion and Transhealth.  Any information appreciated.

Does anyone have any information on smaller companies hiring at this time.

What it is with these companies?
I am now on my third job since deciding to work at home August 2005.  What is it with these companies?  Don't they realize that without us (transcriptionists)  they have no business????   I have been lied to, nit-picky QA'd to death, had money taken away from me, treated like crap, and received nasty emails.  Every time get familiar enough with account to start making some real $, guess what?  Get switched to another account.  I have always worked for hospitals, clinics, etc. 20+ years and never have I encountered such treatment.  It is just amazing, actually no, it is pathetic.  This third job is it.  If this does not work out, going back to the hospital.   I have a lot of admiration for those of you who tough it out and are still working for these amazingly unprofessional companies.  Maybe that is why there is so much outsourcing.  Workers in other countries will take their CRAP.
MT companies
Does anyone know of any Canadian medical transcribing companies that are looking to hire people to work from home??  Thx

MT companies
I'm from BC.  How about you?
which companies use
I had asked on the company board and no one answered.
Thank you.
There are companies to go with...
There are companies to go with that are at home business that are selling a product and making money without having to put a lot of your own in it. Tell them before they try this company to go TheFreshAirShop.com
Why do companies always do that?

Don't they realize the more familiarity an MT has with a certain dictator or group of dictators, the more accurate they are going to be in their transcription and the faster they will be able to produce lines?

Or is it that transcription companies simply don't want MTs to make a decent living?

I don't get it.

if so many MT companies are bad...

i.e. don't pay on time, lousy platforms, too many ESLs, etc., how on earth do they manage to stay in business?

Ever wonder how companies
come up with their minimum requirements of experience, 1 yr, 4 yrs, 7 yrs, etc. Is there some sort of table/formula they use? ;-)
Yes, and a lot of companies are
at least trying it out. There is a board here called voice recognition and you can also look at the jobs on www.mtjobs.com - usually you will see a posting for "editor" which is a little deceiving because sometimes they are QA jobs and sometimes voice rec jobs. You will always be able to tell by the line rate though :-) I have see an average about half what you normally might expect for transcription.
There are a lot of companies like this. They

live in feast or famine.  It's better for them when it's famine because the work is out fast (too bad for us trying to be consistent, huh).  Top that off with people who don't work the whole pay period, just towards the end which is when the work tends to run low (too bad for us trying to be consistent, huh).  So during the time when these don't work, you get overloaded and need to work as much as you can to make up your time (too bad for being consistent, huh).  I know, I live in those same shoes, buried and then scratching and scraping for work to do.  Gotta love it!

Companies
Does this sort of thing happen a lot? I was just curious. I am a student in Medical Transcription, and I was just wondering if anyone had some good tips for job hunting. I don't think I want to start from home. That is something I would be interested in after I have had some experience. Any advice is welcome. Thanks.
MT companies
Hey, don't be discouraged by what you're hearing here. Disgusting. So, SOMETIMES, in my experience, yes, companies are constantly looking for MTs because they are a bad company and can't keep typists. Sometimes their standards are impossibly high, sometimes they are rude to the employees, etc. SOMEtimes it's because they are vibrant and expanding, but beware that some companies expand too fast, and can't keep up, and end up folding because of it. CONTACT them, ask them, go fishing. The only good advice I heard in the whole post thing is, keep looking. You need to be able to evaluate each company based not only on postings and web site evaluations and word of mouth, but also by personal contact. YOUR evaluation will be different from MINE, and you might be comfy working for a company I would hate. So, in that respect it is personal. And the "good" company of today, can fold tomorrow. The terrible company of today, can change it's spots. Find the fit for YOU.
Run away from those companies. sm

I paid $350 a month through Consumer Credit Counseling for over a year and they sold my accounts to Money Market Management and never told me.  They never paid a thing on my Sears bill because they were still waiting for Sears to accept their proposal, which Sears never did.  I was never told that either.

I don't know where all of the money went because when I dumped them, my $200 Home Depot credit card bill was suddenly almost $600. (Late charges and over limit charges).

Work with your creditors.  It worked for me, at least for the most part.  Sears doesn't usually budge, but you'll find that in this day and age, creditors are willing to work with you and settle for a certain amount a month if you are willing to do direct debit (even $20 a month) from your bank account.

Good luck.

I would like to use this - what companies

What companies
Being a Christian, I would not work for any of them because the antics I have seen displayed in the industry would be at odds with my ethics. I will be consent to raise my child and leave the boardroom to someone else.
