Windows 2000 Professional, then XP could be an upgrade.
Operating system installations involve formatting the drive, which will erase everything. The only possible exception would be the OS upgrade, which should install the upgrade and not compromise data, but even then files can be damaged.
Make sure you back up important files and have install discs for any programs installed just in case!
