I should feel bad because I found out that they had been blowing smoke up my, err... blowing smoke after I received the equipment? 


There are many, MANY factors contributing to falling line rates these days.  Let's see, there is the outsourcing overseas to India and Pakistan paying those poor people 2 cpl to type our work!  Then there are the uneducated, careless American MTs who produce poor quality work and don't have a clue or even care!  Then there are the fly-by-night MT schools who promise $50,000 a year or better working from home when you finish their program, effectively turning medical transcription into a get rick quick scheme and producing some of the most under qualified MTs out there which brings us back full circle to the uneducated, careless American MT.  It's a viscious circle.


So get off your high horse and get back to work.  I don't feel guilty about screwing an MTSO that is already sticking it to someone else even as we speak!

Medical people left from FL to go to Biloxi .. drove all the way there and were turned away by police and secret service because the President was there and they were concerned for HIS safety.  We can mobilize and have soldiers on the other side of the world and none at home?  As for the comments about being unable to get into N.O. that is simply bull... the bridges were open to traffic after the storm going into the city and nobody came.  To not get on the ground in NO was probably one of George's gravest public disgraces of his presidency.  I don't give a whit about the politics but I care deeply about the humanity or lack of it.  We are, unfortunately, still a country with a plantation mentality.  Years ago NO flooded and how did they handle it .. they put the blacks in concentration camp like settings and held them and then sent them back to clean up the city.  Until we can treat each other with respect the rest of the world will feel we are idiots and they will be soooooo right.  It is nothing short of a national disgrace and all the chest thumping on this earth will not change it ..

toilet mouths
I live next to two toilet mouths. They are constantly getting "divorced" and never do. They yell the "f" word at each other and have used it on both my husband and I if we go outside to sit on our deck. He thinks if he goes out to smoke a cigarette, we shouldn't be sitting there. He thinks we are "watching him."  We have never said anything to them about this as they are incapable of a decent conversation. Once my husband did ask them not to throw stuff on our property because if a leaf off our tree falls in their yard, or as much as a stick off a branch, they throw it back in ours. Once he threw a shovel of acorns back on our property and when I knocked at the window, he told me to go (you know what) myself. How do you tell this to the cops if they're not present? I have to bring the grandchildren in during their "f" word fights, as their parents would never use foul langugage in front of them. I am not a saint, but I'm sick of having to close my windows. She goes out with her girlfriends and they come home drunk and hollering at 2:00 AM but just enough to wake everyone and then they go in and finish their night out. He tells her he is "way far up from her" whatever that means, and he goes out with his buddies.He toots the horn if the girlfriends park in his parking spot at 2:00 am, how do you explain this?  Things would be quiet by the time the police arrive. Apparently she wants to buy him out but can't get a mortgage, so they both stay and fight. We have never in 18 years seen them go out together. How can you call the cops and tell them you don't want to live like this? Am I the "word police" or what? I'm tired of living like this. I plan to stay where I am but honestly hope there is a typhoon or something that will blow that house out of my back yard.She yells constantly that she has a right to "live her life." She has an expired CNA and calls herself a "private duty nurse" although all she does is clean peoples' houses and take them shopping. At one point she took an 81-YO Alzheimer's patient home with her and offered him some wine and used the "f" word on him because she apparently sleeps there a few nights a week while his people go out to the casino and he wakes her up singing.  Other than record her, which would not stand up in court, how do you deal with this type of behavior? I am sure the police have better to do and need more evidence. I would love to get some of these long "f" word fights on tape and end it all and get them arrested, especially knowing people pay her to care for their loved ones. She brags that any money she makes goes "right in here," pointing to her bra. Where are the laws to protect us and to protect people who prey on the elderly?

Mushmouths..well my worst one is just horrible, everyone leaves blanks out the kazoo with this idiot and with so many, his supe told him to speak clearer, had him listen to figure out the blanks and hmmmmmm.he had no idea what he had said.


He is now going a bit slower and clearer but is still quilty of garbage.

But MTs who 'keep their mouths shut' are part of -sm
the problem. Where I came from, that's the kind of person they wanted - a little mouse who kept her head low, flew under the rader, and just typed, typed, typed. And preferably did not get sick, eat, or go to the bathroom very often! The people who saw problems and/or solutions were a huge THREAT to the managers, who wanted their own managers to think that they knew what they were doing, & 'had everything under control'. And they were scared that the people who spoke up might embolden all the mice. The only way the MT disgrace in this country will ever have a chance of getting better (and maybe our medical records banned from going offshore!) is if MTs speak up LOUDLY, and bring this problem to the attention of the whole country.
Look at both sides.

You will hear about declining wages, outsourcing, etc. But lower on this page, you see many making between 13 at the lowest, up to $25 per hour, and working at home, no transportion expenses with 3 dollar a gallon gas where I live, traffic, car wear and tear, lunches out, ordering in, office gossip, politics, dress codes, dry cleaners, and so forth.


I have done this job for 25 years now and it is the only job I have done. I absolutely love it. I still make a good living. Just be careful with the employer that you go with. Some pay better than others and are  more honest.

Of course, Teri is not able to tell hers.  But others were.  I think Teri's family was treated abdominably, as well. I do not think he is genuine and I do not think what he did, he did from love.  Putting myself in Teri's family's place, I can't say that I think I would have reacted any differently.  I'm not sure why Michael chose to resurface. Most of the furor had died down. 
Frustrating on both sides
You are absolutely correct about the hyphens - if the linked words form an adjective followed by a noun, they are hyphenated.  I know it's frustrating to have undereducated QA people, and as a QA person, it's equally frustrating to have people who absolutely never hyphenate, put a comma after every 2 words (or none at all), etc.  I really really hate when MTs start a sentence with "patient comes in......" when the doctor clearly states "THE patient....".....that drives me insane! I had a report the other night where I had to add "the" 27 times!  It's amazing how many people do not understand proper punctuation usage, adjectives, verbs, etc.  I certainly wish I had more like you who know where they go!

I had a team and their QA to oversee. The "recruiter" would hire anyone she knew who could type. This was a teaching hospital, very large, very difficult and a challenge to those of us with plenty of experience. I could not fire an MT and if I told the MT manager that this so and so could not do the job, I was told to TEACH HER to do it and in the mean time, fix her reports.

I did have some MTs who wanted to learn, had had a bit of experience, and were anxious to progress. I spent a lot of time on them because they took to suggestions and they worked hard. The ones who not MTs, hadn't studied and were clueless, I had the option of assigning them very little work, which is what I did and I did out of self-preservation. There are only 24 hrs in a day and I was working 20 of them!

I have two jobs right now and QA at one I know very well, having worked with her for years. She only sends back a corrected a report in its entirety. The blanks she filled in are changed to a red font. I can see it, I can learn and I keep every one of her reports in a special folder in my email. I am trying to learn 3 doctors who chased away several other MTs on this account. One has a speech impediment and talks very very fast, one has an accent and talks too fast in the face of it and the third is a speed dictator who doesn't think that words need to be pronounced to be understood. The rest of the physicians don't present a problem. It has been difficult because I have had these 3 doctors about twice each and not enough to tackle the learning curve YET. In any case, this QA is patient and she never ever offers personal comments of a derogatory nature.

The other company I work for, I think that QA is nonexistent, other than when they are throwing their weight around. I had one particular report, an I&D of a sebaceous cyst. The doctor followed with this "cheesy material" which is what I transcribed. They called me on the phone to tell me that the doctor "never would have said that" and I said I'd stake my reputation as an MT that he did! She said, well...you're still wrong. Ummm no, I am not. That is lack of experience, knowledge or even a decent ear. No wonder we are on the verge of losing the account, yet again.

Now, I worked for a company where the QA person treated everyone like they were about 2 yrs old. I had her call me names like $toopid, moronic, an imbecile and whenever she used a word of 3 syllables, told me to look it up since I was not bright enough to understand what she was talking about. The owner, when I complained, said that is just how she is, but that she is so good at what she does... I said look, she represents your company and what you stand for. If this is all you have to offer, I am leaving, and I did.

SOME QA gals seem to have a chip on their shoulders. I am of the opinion that those who can do this job, do it and those who are knowledgeable, but can't do the job, do QA. I know several QA people who have CTS and can't type anymore, so they QA and I think that is a bit different.

It is widely understood that the very best MTs are not QA people, they are still MTs. I could not, would not take a 50% or better pay cut to be a QA person. I am far too fast and too capable for that. Neither company I work for presently would ever put me on QA because I am extremely valuable as an MT. Transcribing is my stock and trade and I can't see giving that up for anyone.

Remember as well, there are reasons that we work at home, and I am talking psychological reasons. I can't stand office politics and I don't like people. I am told I don't play well with others, and this is a correct assessment. Others have their issues too, and some of these issues creep up with QAs who seem to need some therapy and help dealing with people. This seems to attract people with a decided need to be the biggest fish in the smallest pond and throw their fins about to get attention.

on one hand you say compassion is another term for "enabling," and lending a helping hand to someone emotionally is only making them a victim. Now you say you have compassion and sympathy for others. yeah right.
not taking sides here but some people are
forced to take early retirement in order to keep their pensions, 401K, etc because BIG BUSINESSES are cutting older/more experienced/or employees with lots of time with the company in order to hire younger/less experienced (I.e. CHEAPER) employees which saves lots of $$$ for the company.

I just hope you never have to be in a situation where you are forced to retire but cannot afford it.

Like I said somewhere way down below somewhere, many of us have done it successfully, but TIMES HAVE CHANGED. She needs to hear ALL sides, and she needs to know what she will be up against if she decides to pursue MT training.

I fully support stay-at-home moms. I was one myself. Still at home most of the time with pre-teens and a college student. I'm thankful every day that I did not have to put them in daycare. I applaude those who make that decision and make it work. My kids are well adjusted, secure, and all-around good kids. I will never regret my decision to go to school to be an MT so I could "work from home."

BUT IT DOESN'T WORK WELL FOR EVERYONE. The OP needs to hear the good along with the not-so-good.

As far as MT being an "at-home career," I've been an at-home MT, in-office MT, at-home editor, in-office editor, QA manager, QA consultant, and a college MT instructor. There are many avenues in this career; not all of them are at home, and there are advantages and disadvantages to all situations. I've seen it from a lot of different perspectives. My personal experience with MT has been great. But I've seen (and have personally known) many whose experiences weren't so grand. I've also had students who were talented, motivated and truly gifted for the profession of MT who spent thousands upon thousands of dollars, not to mention the hours of work, to earn a certificate with the hopes of working from home immediately after graduation so they could stay at home with their young kids who were suddenly faced with the harsh reality that the jobs were going to India, and most, if not all, MTSOs require 2 years of experience and won't even consider a new grad. As I stated previously, there ARE exceptions to this, but there are FEW exceptions. That's a fact that needs no debate. Granted, motivation, hard work and perseverance do pay off, and the motivation to stay at home with one's baby is the strongest motivation I can think of.

But still--again--stick to the original question and lighten up on those who don't see the world as you see it. There are many, many perspectives and she will benefit from hearing all of them.

Just as a side note, I "created" moods out of my rooms. Guests call my living room "the happy room" because it is colorful and cheerul (right down to the orange border). My dining room they call "the serious room". I gave it an exotic theme.

When redorating, think of a theme, and they apply all color and shapes and sizes according to that theme. My them for the living is "60's", I even bought some black light posters. I made my own pillow covers, seat covers and curtains, sewing them by hand. I used ribbon for the curtain looks and this same ribbon (yellow and orange) I used to hang all of my pictures.

This room has absolutely no color match to the next room which is the dining room. So the other person said you should tie in your rooms, that was out with the 80's. CREATE moods in your rooms. Give your room a life and style and character of its own. Your home can be as diverse as you are. Why not show all sides of you throughout your home. It is fun and it is a place you can LIVE in!!!
they don't REFUSE to hire new MT's. They REFUSE to hire them at 6-8 cents per line.

mostly because you can now hire experienced MT's at 6-8 cpl. In the near future, you will be able to hire experienced MT's at 5 cpl. Then people will start getting out of this business and new people will stop trying to get in. I had a job opening and asked people to bid what they wanted per line. One very smart young lady was a new grad and bid 3 cpl. I hired her a year and a half ago, she has been terrific! and I was willing to spend my time training her because a) time is money and she saved me money so I could spend my time and b) she had definite potential!. In another six months, she will be the MT with 2 years experience applying for jobs. AND she will get them because she will test well and essentially "bought" her experience. So use Economics 101...

the workload available; I was told there was lots of OT available b/c the accounts are behind. We will see.

its just that they want to pay you less than minimum wage for the first couple years because you aren't *qualified.* I bet the school didn't mention that. None of them do. Good luck paying off that student loan.

No, even the hospitals don't want to hire new MTs.
Doctors don't want to hire newbies.  In office, at home, it doesn't matter.  It's not about being a stay at home mommy, as you are so assuming and generalizing yourself.  Everyone wants to hire experienced workers, but nobody is willing to train them.  As I said, every other industry in the country trains their workers.  MT seems to be the only one where people are expected to walk into it knowing everything.  It's not an assumption; it's an observation.  Just because my experience and observations are different than yours does not make me wrong.  You're not the know all, end all to the MT world.  I do have business management experience and education, so don't dismiss my observation as lacking just because it doesn't match yours.

I think it took a few days after the recruiter emailed me initially b/c she was busy or something, but after that everything went faster. Maybe you should just call, I don't think they would mind. I don't think you should worry.
I won't hire anyone without them first being willing to test.

I did transcription at home, bought my own insurance, got depressed and gained weight and lost almost all my social contacts. It really changed my personality for the worse. But for another person with stronger family ties, or real involvement in the community, it might not turn out that way.

In the past 5 years I've had to have some medical attention(comes with my age group) and I have been SO thankful for paid time off and for health insurance. I now also have some hope of having a decent retirement income so I don't burden my children when i get to that age.

It's such an individual thing. Best of luck in making the decision that is a great fit for you and yours.

Most hire a subcontractor
I think it it is wise to establish a relationship prior to needing them so they are already familiar with the account(s) and can do it with very little instruction.
Who's going to hire a 60 year old except

the fast food places and Wal-Mart. And they don't pay that much either. I already checked into it.


I don't like being around people that much either. I left an office job because of office politics...not once...but 4 times in my lifetime of working. Just couldn't take the crap.  In today's world, the people out there aren't very nice. In fact, some of them are downright nasty. I've seen them treat service personnel as if THEY owned the place.


Also, there aren't many jobs or decent wages in my area. Most jobs around here pay minimum wage. For me to get a good job, I would have to go 40 miles from home into another county without the benefit of a 4 lane highway. Only 2 lanes and mostly through small towns with low speed limits. It would take me about an hour to get to a decent paying, so you're spending 10 hours a week on the road.


I stay in MT because I love the challenge, because I can work at home. I drive my car about 5 miles a week. That's it. A tank of gas lasts me more than a month.


You get your own clients, then you hire them...sm
MTSOs are paid on production, too, so most simply cannot take on the task of training a newbie. If you think that's a good business plan, get some clients and give it a whirl. It's just not realistic to expect MTSOs to train inexperienced MTs and still have enough hours in the day to handle other aspects of the business, as well - and still make a small profit of some sort.

When I see suggestions like this, I have to assume they come from someone who has never even run a business before. It's easy to sit on the sidelines and make suggestions when you have no idea what is involved. The MTSO doesn't just sit on his/her tush and eat bon-bons while the MTs type their fingers to the bone. There is a LOT that goes into running a successful service (key word successful). The lucky MTSOs find enough help to where they don't have to transcribe and can handle just the business aspect, but many aren't that fortunate and still do a good deal of transcribing along with that.

Besides training those inexperienced MTs - and that's a full-time job in itself, believe me - you will have to proof their work very thoroughly (which will mean a full listen on all sound files to ensure accuracy or risk losing your clients altogether). You will also be responsible for tracking and assigning work to the MTs, scurrying to find help when someone decides they'd rather go shopping than work that day (happens more often than you might think), handle payroll and tax documentation for each individual client and each individual MT, invoicing and billing your clients and tracking payments, maintenance of equipment and supplies, handling client phone calls and concerns including next-to-impossible "tech support" questions from clients that really just don't understand the equipment, etc., etc. The list goes on.

Keep in mind, while you are training the inexperienced MTs, you will also need to do a LOT of transcription yourself. Most inexperienced MTs will take all day to finish one 25-minute file, so you will have to transcribe many lines yourself to meet the client's TAT if you want to keep the clients. Since it takes most people at least a year to finish MT school, you can count on keeping up this pace for about that long. And it would probably be more like indefinitely since everyone learns at a different pace.

You will be putting in at least 12-hour days, assuming you are fast and efficient, and you will rarely get time off. If you do take time off, it will be without pay and when you return, you will have so much work piled up that you'll spend the next 2 weeks working around the clock to get caught up.

I'm all for keeping it in the USA, but you cannot seriously expect companies that are also paid on production to train newbies. Would you expect to be trained from the bottom up to be a plumber? Doctor? Dentist? Lawyer? Why do so many MTs think they deserve to be hired without any skills?

If you are up to training inexperienced MTs on top of all that, knowing full well that you will make next to nothing in pay yourself after you pay said MTs at least 7-8 cpl, then knock yourself out and be sure to let us know how it goes!

If I wanted to train inexperienced MTs, I'd start an MT school. Yes, we were all new and inexperienced at some point, but since MT has gone to production pay and offsite, most are not trained OTJ anymore. It's just not feasible, no matter how good your intentions. Even the "experienced" MTs require some training on account specs, so most MTSOs lose money in the first month or so of hiring, but there's no way any smart businessperson would agree to that indefinitely.

If you want to keep jobs in the USA, get adequate training and act professional. Don't accept rotten line rates, even if it's just "for now," and don't turn in work with careless mistakes. Don't say you'll work but then call off because you'd rather take Little Mary and Johnny swimming because it's a nice day. Don't expect special treatment just because you're a mom - many MTSOs are moms, too, and are working long hours and sacrificing time with their own families in order to make sure the clients are happy!! There is no option for MTSOs to just blow work off for the day, because if they do, they probably won't have clients come the next day. Clients won't put up with it since they can just get online and find another service willing to do the work (and more often than not, they don't even have to do that becuase services are marketing to them regularly).

It's not even about offshore competition. It's about changing the way MTs are viewed on the whole. Act professional and you will be treated as a professional. It really is that simple the majority of the time.

If you need someone to adhere to a strict schedule then you need to hire employees and pay their SS.  I am finding that more and more employers want the best of both world.  They want to pay like an IC and treat like an employee.  Why MTs are putting up with this is beyond me.  If they report the "employers" to the IRS they can be held liable for back taxes.

without any formal training???? I get very frustrated with people who ask me to get them a job because, after all, how hard can just sitting there typing be?

This is a serious job. You can change a patients past, present and future by one mistake on a report. You do not "travel this avenue" for fun.

If you want to be an MT, and can be serious about it, then you will take an MT course and learn what you need to know. If you are not willing to do that then you need to find another avenue.

TTS, NH - do they hire newbies?  I have a whole 6 weeks of experience and am looking for a good company.  Not fond of the big nationals.


If you have any additional suggestions for good companies I am open.


Looking for employee position, but realize that initially this is almost impossible to find. Will definitely settle for IC status.
