Question to ponder...If there is such a huge shortage of MTs, why is everybody always

and ponder this as well...
greenjeans, not only do the Indian MTs get a very discounted rate for certification and all else, but the American CMTs are paying for it with the increases they have had in the past few years.

American CMTs in this county are actually sponsoring non American MTs.

I e-mailed the former AAMT asking for a discount for hardship reasons, and was told no way, not possible, never will happen. They offered a discount once a while back but no indication it will happen again. No concern for me and my dilemma whatsoever...
Just something to ponder - sm

Make sure you are putting some of that "good money" away now while you are able to make it.  15 years from now, you may not be able to bang out those 1500-2000 lines per day and your check is going to shrink.

I was just like so many of you and became trapped by what I was doing.  After 15 years of it, i was so severely burned out and I am unable to keep up that pace any longer.  I'm in school now so that I can get a better paying job outside the home.  Being here when my kids were yougn was wonderful, but now I need to get out, but I need to continue at the level of pay we've grown accustomed to.

Here's some points to ponder....sm

1.  You can go ahead and cash the checks you received and it 's guaranteed money.

2.  You can wait and join the class action suit if you haven't and not cash the check; however, remember that in class action lawsuits the only true winners are the lawyers.  They end up getting most of the money in the end and generally the plaintiffs end up with a very small amount.  It irks me to see things like class action suits that results in the attorneys receiving millions of dollars in legal fees and the plaintiffs end up with less than  $100 because the legal fees ate the money available up.   Look at people who sue insurance companies over automobile accidents for example.  Say an attorney gets them $500,000 - well the attorney gets $250,000 for legal fees and the injured party receives $250,000 - and in situations where they receive large monies it's generally because the person is going to have permanent health problems related to the accident that future insurance companies will exclude paying for.   $250,000 isn't a lot of money if you have an injury that will cause chronic problems throughout your life.

3.  Remember that if you do join the suit that this will probably be tied up in court for years so don't expect a quick settlement if they do decide to settle.  Agreeing to settle a case outside of court doesn't mean the defendant is guilty - sometimes it's cheaper to settle out than to continue racking up costs associated with the lawsuit.

As a note I don't work for MQ - I've just been out there in the legal world to see very commonly that what people think will happen isn't what happens in the long run.  The best you'll get is checks for any amount you weren't paid properly and possibly some interest, but don't expect to get a truckload of cash because they messed up your paychecks.  Instead if you wait on the lawsuit then you may end up having to share the back wages with the attorneys.

Ponder this thought
I agree about proofreading and finding errors, but geez, that person(s) was very hard on her. Don't think she will be back in a while:(

My gosh, think about those doctors that cannot speak and then to have a Transcriptionist that cannot type - YOWZEE - Wouldn't want to decipher that report - LOL!

Imette St. Guillen's death should make you ponder
There is simply no rhyhm or reason. Random acts such as this, to innocent souls. It makes no sense to me. As I grow older, I believe less and less in a higher power and more and more in luck.
No, just a shortage of US MTs who will
s
No shortage out by Akron, OH
s
lol they eat dog too, i think they were just having a shortage of dog at the restaurant so....
they had to do a roundup. Next, they will report the feline virus is out of control and do a roundup on them as well and that's all I have to comment on this post. Take care all!
Finish the course. I think there will be a shortage sm
in the future of all medical personnel from MT to MD. Looking at the whole picture, those of us from the baby boomer age are pushing 50 and as families, many of us had 3 or fewer children or none at all. So, in my opinion, that leaves a much smaller volume medical personnel to care for the aging in the future. So, finish that course so you can type my reports when I need them.
There is supposed to be a shortage
of American MTs I am reading in a large national information management magazine, and also according to our own gov. and our national association.  So why are wages falling if we are so desperately needed?  After 20 years, I am also seeking to get out.  I am at the height of my career in MT and find this is a losing profession.  They took a survey and were surprised in the article that wages have gone down.  They said a reason might because so many MTs work at home and so are part-time.  What a bunch of "you-know-what.!"  Wages are dropping because we do not get paid what we used to be paid.  I am making less now than 10 years ago.  I was recently offered an IC job for 7 CPL!   That was starting wages 15 years ago for FT.  Now they want to pay that for experienced and IC to boot, so you have higher percentage of taxes.  I have even seen 6 CPL.  These companies are trying to outbid each other by charging less and less, so they pay their MTs less and less.  They also must cover those big salaries and bonuses for the CEOs.
is there a shortage of American MTs?
nm
There is not a shortage. A lot of work
is being sent out of the country.
And the MTSOs say there's a shortage of
But yet they can't understand why.  Go figure.
I live in the NE and let me tell you, there is NO shortage of trees.

gas shortage/leaving for ohio in the am
Here in Brunswick stations closed at 6 pm and not open until Friday and can get only 5 gallons then. Trucker said Atlanta was getting $5 a gal and now Atlanta is completely out of gas. I am leaving for Ohio in the am and concerned if this shortage is just here or all the way up. Any info would be appreciated.
There's a shortage of US MT's because the skill is becoming obsolete

Schools don't even encourage anyone to get into this field anymore because they don't want to have someone take a course and then be out of work in a few years when this skill goes the same direction that shorthand did several decades back.

Like someone said on the Company board, education is the key.  Don't allow yourself to be a one-trick pony and learn how to do something else while you can.

What a shortage of medical transcriptionists

Whoever says that needs to take a look at the job board and the posting that has over 1,000 views.

There are no transcriptionists looking for jobs either.

Nursing has created their own shortage
by severely restricting the availability of classes for students and refusing to make the class time available in the evenings, weekends, etc.

They also created their own shortage by making so many of the jobs papershuffling jobs rather than hands on care, and many of those jobs could easily be filled by a trained technician rather than an RN.

I do not feel sorry for nurses.
What holiday shortage? None this year
nm
About "US qualified MT shortage" and s/m
claiming that MTs won't work nights and weekends, I don't know about you, but at my job, God forbid I have a technical issue that's not between 8 AM and 5 PM.  It's the office staff that won't work nights and weekends, not the MTs.
Unfortunately, this company has no shortage of workers.
I know they hired a few new grads after I turned down their offer. As long as someone will work for that, they have no incentive to raise rates. Companies now don't seem to care about experience and quality, only concerned with the $$$. They didn't care that I can transcribe 2000 lines a day with 99% accuracy. They would rather stick to their cpl and hire new grads. Well, good luck to them.
Is there a shortage of experienced MTs here in the USA? Am I blind and deaf? sm
I was talking to a prospective employer today.  First off, it is a start-up company in US.  They already have a base in the Philippines. Well, that turned right off; however, we continued the conversation.  My question to this person was this.....so, if you were to get contracts for MT here in the US, are you willing to just hire US MTs?  Answer...Well there is such a shortage of good quality MTs here in the US and we would like to have the work done in the Philippines.  My next question, and if the contract specifically states all work is to stay in the USA, what then?  Well, then we would hire only US based MTs.

Finally, I had to stop him in his tracks....I told him I emphatically disagree.  There is not a shortage of US MTs.  The problem is that you or any other Internationally based company is not willing to pay the US MTs what they are worth.  You want cheap labor, and you won't get that in the US.  Our MTs here in the USA produce such a high quality patient record and you have to be willing to compensate for that.  If you are interested in USA contracts but want to use cheap labor with no concern for quality, than I am not the person for this position.

I am so furious right now as I mull over the conversation......am I just blind or is there really a shortage here in the US of quality-driven MTs.

I am an MT myself as well as QA Specialist and I just do not agree with this mentality.  I think they use this excuse to justify their wanting to offshore.  I see through the smoke screen; however, I guess I just need to hear it from my fellow MTs.

What are your thoughts on this issue of not enough trained and experienced MTs here in the USA?  Personally, I don't agree.

This was an executive-type position with an awesome benefit package and salary; however, I turned down any opportunities with this company.  I will not encourage or support giving our MT jobs to the Philippines, India or anywhere but the USA.

The real shortage is good MTSOs
First of all, congratulations to you for having the guts to stick up for your convictions.  I am really proud of you for telling them like it is.  There is no shortage of good MTs, there is, however, a shortage of good MTSOs and national MT companies.  Fortunately, we have boards like this one to tell us who those are, the ones who pay peanuts, the ones with inferior equipment/platforms, and the ones who outsource their work overseas and think the foreign MTs are "far superior" to the American MTs.  Most of us experienced MTs who have been in this business for any length of time, would not work for them.  The ones who cry that "there are no more good American MTs" are the ones who are outsourcing overseas or otherwise abusing their employees - that is why they have such a hard time attracting "Good MTs."  They need to look in the mirror to see the reasons why!
I am the orginal poster asking the question about the shortage. I am under 40.
I started MT while in high school in a VoTech program and have been doing it ever since! I am 35. Not every MT out there is "old".
Shortage on multiple accounts through a national. nm
x, nope, none, zip, all EMPTY
my point is -- not like there's a shortage of people to talk to.

nursing shortage includes nurses for instructors...sm
you can't teach nursing classes without nurses to teach the classes - that's part of the shortage and part of the reason why the shortage continues. Also more nurses are going for the bachelor's degree (4 years vs. 2 years) and that is extending the time before they are out in the work force.
I live right off I-75 in Richmond, Ky and we haven't had any shortage yet, but price is definitel
up at $2.99 a gallon.  Good luck to you!
YUP, huge fan!!!!

OMG, thanks!! That would be a huge (sm)
mistake personally for me, as I do not know how I would make out with the kids, and then to go through all that, train, and not have it work. Will look elsewhere. Thanks for the input!!

the SEP IRA is a huge deduction...
but I can't say that I've seen people frequently posting they take $10K in deductions. That also means they spent $10K. You may be imagining that. Maybe do an archive search and then try to repost and contact them?  As has been frequently said on this post, the only difference between IC and SE is an IC pays another 7.5% self employment tax but then takes deductions. Don't see how that adds up to 10 grand.
I smell a huge rat
Is your husband up to no-good with this loser? First of all any "my baby's daddy" situation has scumbag written all over it. Second of all, if your husband doesn't mind being used by this lazy bum for a free place to live, he has to be getting something out of the bargain. I'd be doing some serious checking around if I were you.

Meanwhile, you're right to keep this piece of crap away from your kids. If your husband likes him so much let him live with this waste of oxygen alone.

Good luck.
So what if it's with huge templates....
600 lines an hour is 600 lines an hour whether it's straight typing or using templates. I WISH I had huge templates.
Anyone here Bayscribe? Have a huge ?

for you.  When you hit SUBMIT and go into the spell check, and say there's a spelling error it picks up (for example, it's a medicine that I need to look up and verify), is there ANY WAY I can do this without having to completely close down the spell check, go to another window, look up the word, and then re-hit SUBMIT and spell check again?

I've still new to Bayscribe, but so far this has been a huge time eater-upper.  For some reason it won't let me do anything but close up the spell checker, look up the word, and then re-spell check (and of course it doesn't remember any of the fixes I've already made so I need to go back through them again).

Ideas??????????? THANK YOU!!

Well there is already a huge thread...
Why keep it going and going?  If you all are just now realizing that AHDI is against the MT, then have you had your head in the sand the past few years or what?  Get a grip!  Life is what you make it!  This OP obviously wants to keep bringing it up and bringing it up blocking the entire board with this crap.
I got rid of my HUGE desk...sm
i use a 20 inch widescreen laptop and i just ordered a very small rolling desk.  i use wireless keyboard, mouse, and headphones. that way, I can roll my office outdoors when the weather is nice or in my bedroom or any place I will be comfortable as I suffer from chronic back problems.
You can't. It's a huge ripoff.
It sucks plain and simple.  If you're not terribly interested in making enough money to pay the bills it might be okay for you.  Not for me.
We have a huge 4 day celebration in our little town

There is something going on from tonight right through until the fireworks on the 4th.  There is a street dance, a bean hole bean supper, a lobster bake and just tons of stuff going on.

Our town is only population 7500, but the celebration has grown to over 30,000 attendees for the 2 hour parade, followed by fun, games, entertainment and music in the park and then fireworks that start at 9:00 and last for hours. It's great fun!

I'm lucky too.  I live just a mile from the festivities, so I'm home for a long time while people are still waiting in traffic. The traffic goes smoothly though.  The events have always been very well organized with our school bus drivers giving free shuttle bus rides.

Happy 4th everyone!

I have never been SO embarassed, but I called, and its A HUGE NO!! Oh well!

Thanks! My friend's kid is a huge fan & will love this :)

NO. We have committed to huge OT today

Whatever, but it would be a huge meal and take me months to eat it. nm

Huge room in a very old house.
Walls are a dark greenish gold with hardwood floors. Standard Office Max computer table where I do all my work. Bookshelves all around the room. Only other furniture is an old desk that is covered with all the stuff I don't have room for on the computer table. Four large windows facing south and east. When working I have all the important stuff like reference books, printer, etc within reach.
To all ICs claiming huge deductions...(sm)

I just met with my accountant yesterday.  I am so sick I cannot think straight.  I asked alot of people before moving ahead with an IC position and leaving employee status.  EVERYONE stated that the deductions you can write off are more than worth paying the extra SS taxes that you no longer have an employer to pay.  I even saw several people specifically state they lowered their taxable income by $10,000 or more so the IC status was well worth the headache of paying the extra taxes.

Well, I would sure love to know how in the world you ladies come up with these deductions.  The accountant said my total deductions for my home office came to about $2400.  But then my SS taxes I owed ate up that plus about another $1500.  Are those of you reaping in huge deductions working strictly via the internet?  I have no gas, mileage, vehicle wear/tear deductions because I'm strictly internet based.  But even with considering those deductions, if I had them, I still cannot see where in the world you all are coming out so much better.  Someone please offer suggestions/comments....have I just completely screwed myself over here or do I need a new accountant??

once I went to a huge outdoor Colorado BBQ..

Wow, I'm getting a huge break compared to others...sm
Through Cincinnati Bell, I have to have their broadband, which is also the ISP.  As part of the bundle, I get Complete Connections which includes call waiting, caller ID, call block, etc.  This whole package comes to around $44 and gives you 200 minutes of long distance.  I recently asked to have unlimited added to my phone line, but it automatically goes on both lines.  The additional charge for unlimited is $10.  So I basically pay $10 for unlimited!
