I have no advice as far as encouraging my children to join the military (they are both under 10 years old) but my husband just finished up 20 years in the Air Force. The most important thing is making sure that this is what your son wants to do...I highly advise not joining on a whim. I read the posts below and pretty much put them on disregard except for one thing. If you son does indeed want to be a police officer and joins any military branch to become an MP or SP...then he most probably will go to Iraq. Certainly the Armed Services are hurting for enlistees at the present time but they do have outstanding benefits regarding college, etc. They also have reenlistment bonuses, with some being a mighty hefty chunk of change. My husband loved the AF and joined when he was pretty much in the same situation as your son...he had the girlfriend (who incidentally was me!). He only planned on staying in for 4 years but it turned out to be 20 years. It was a great experience and if we both had it to do over again..we would not change a thing.

I wish you and your son the best of luck!
