This one can be very tricky.  In general, "lay" refers to things.."lie" refers to people.  Cannot find "lied down" though.  Can find "laid down"..however the definition is again "to place something in a horizontal position"...do not know if that applies to oneself too or strictly things.  You got me wondering hard on this one too lol  I posted a thread on a grammar website.  I'll copy the link here and if it will take it you can continue to check on the website to see if someone can help..I'm very curious myself now too!  Good luck!
