but it is mostly individuals/small MTSOs as far as I can tell. For instance, I work for a lady who has two or three local accounts and I am the only Transcriptionist assisting her with these accounts. She pays (and charges) for gross lines. I also work for a mid-sized national that pays on a 65-character line, and they pay me 2.5 cpl less. (Of course, if I could get more of the local work I would, but she is not interested in growing her business, so it just is not there.)

I know of a couple of other small MTSOs/individuals in the area that also charge per gross lines. It seems to be dependant on where you live, in part, and perhaps how saavy the office personnel/doctors are about rates/line-counting methods. By that I do not mean to imply that I think they should be ripped off if they are not familiar with the differences. I do not believe one method is any more or less fair than the other, as even though the nationals tend to pay their transcriptionists less than the locals do, it seems pretty standard that the charges to the client are a couple of cpl higher on a 65-char vs. gross (usually about 12-14 cpl gross and 15-17 cpl for 65-char, I believe, though I have heard that hospitals are charged more in the range of 22-23 cpl.) Again, a lot is dependent on the area in which you live and what the market will bear in your area.
