Sounds like where I used to work- PHNS- 5% of our total MONTHLY - sm
work was our limit to QA. You'd get your butt chewed off if you went over that....and this was 80% hard ESL too. Totally unrealistic. They did not penalize you though, but that was a while ago too, now, who knows, wouldn't put it past them.

My first job was a total cold call to small local company...got hired over the phone- sm
give it a shot. Look in your yellow pages or on-line white and yellow pages and see what you can come up with. MT Daily has a list by state of MT companies to with their contact info. Also test your butt off anywhere and everywhere on line, you will learn a lot during the process. I found it quite enlightening when I was doing it 3+ years ago. Good luck.

That sounds like a company I used to work for....
that paid monthly and it was NEVER on time. Checks bounced, 1099's late, and excuses after excuses. I even had to threaten a lawsuit to get paid my final check! I would certainly not quit your other company before you have some time under your belt with the new company to see how things are going to be.

Not only do they have various account specs but I get samples but NOT the dictators!  What good does that do me? 
That sounds to me like possible outsourcing at your company.
That is a long time to pass for the doctors to be dicating on their patients..I have seen that before with an old company I worked for and they were outsourcing come to find out...just putting a bug in your ear!!!

Birdie, dear, no company (even well organized ones) can put all expectations up front. Feedback is how that is conveyed.

Obviously, the changes they want are not "petty" or they wouldn't want them.

I'm new to working for a company (m)
as opposed to for myself where I set my own schedule and TAT.  When a company tells you that you work from 9-5, etc. what exactly do they mean?  Do you literally have to be at your desk transcribing for those hours?  Or once you meet any line count requirements are you done for the day whether you worked 2 hours or 8 hours? I'm just trying to decide what avenue to go.  I have a certain amount of freedom that I enjoy right now as in I can work until noon, go on a field trip with one of my kids, and come back and work at 5 and complete my work, etc.  Or I can work at 10 at night if I want/need to.  I just wonder what to expect from working for a company and would appreciate any insight!

I've always worked for more than one company. I encourage people to not put all their eggs in one basket.

For those of you working for more than one company...

I am looking to move some of my eggs into another basket, if you know what I'm saying...  I'm wondering how those of you who work for more than one company juggle the work load.  I am talking part-time, IC work here. 


The company I work with now is great, but like I said, I would just like to have a little something in my back pocket.  They do call me and email me all the time asking if I can pick up this job or that job.  What if I'm bogged down with other work?


Do companies look down on IC's that have other companies they work for, or do they kind of expect that? 


Thanks for any advice.


Working for a company or IC

For those of you who are ICs, have you regreted  taking that giant leap of working for a national company versus working as an IC?  I know there would days of feast or famine, but at this point I need the flexibility.  I am in my late 50s and do not yet qualify for Medicare.  


The other problem is too that I will  have to buy my own health insurance.   Would anyone recommend a good national insurance company for getting medical/surgical benefits for myself and spouce that do not charge a fortunate? 


I still get to type hospital dictation since I am an acute-care MT with 29 years exp. 


So undecided.

has oodles of employees working on ASR, right? I work on Escription and probably not as many on my account but it is almost perfect. You cannot teach the computer IF you have lots of people who type in things differently, just will not LEARN. What system do you use and how many working on same acct?
It sounds like she's scamming the insurance company
and pocketing the money. I'd inform the chiropractor directly and let him know you're going to tell your insurance company that the charges are not legitimate unless he puts a stop to it. If you inform the insurance company, he's the one who's going to be in hot water. That should end the fraudulent charges. If they don't stop, then follow through and inform the insurance company and let them face the consequences. There's no earthly reason a 9-year-old child should be visiting a chiropractor regularly. The ex is a thief, without a doubt.

Sounds like the company wins 2 ways - (sm)
1) They get to pay you less because you are making fewer lines.

2) They have a capable MT doing their tougher work that they of course can't give the newbies.

What's wrong with this picture? The answer: They should be paying more per line, the more difficult the account is, and enough so that you (as a seasoned employee who does accurate work) are making MORE than you did as a new hire, NOT less!
Sounds like your company handled it wrong there.
Was the company threatening the MTs? It sounds like the account was threatening the company to leave.

If your company did nothing to let the MTs know they were not in danger, the company failed.

There is nothing wrong with MTs knowing that an account is in danger of quitting but the company needs to let the MTs understand whether or not that will effect their employer relationship. Two tee-totally different topics.

It all depends on the company you are working for. sm
If you are the only recruiter for a company, you are not competing with anyone in the same company, but you are competing with the other companies out there.  You have to know the way to sell your company hopefully that your company has something to sell, you have to have strong people skills, be able to administer whatever kind of test is appropriate, and I think it is imperative that you have experience as a medical Transcriptionist as well as a QA specialist.  I think both of those positions go along with making a strong recruiter. 
Until you know which company you are interested in working for, sm
or will be working for, it is useless to worry about equipment. Many companies have specific equipment they require. Either they will provide this, or ask you to buy/rent it. It is impossible to buy equipment for a job you do not have. Some companies use transcribers, but most of them use internet platforms, often provided by the company. This platform will determine which pedal you need. Unless you have a lot of money to throw away, get a job first, then be prepared to buy/rent the equipment. MTs that have been working awhile usually have equipment sitting around, but they don't buy it hoping to get a job; it is usually left over from a former job. My advice is save your money until you get a job. Good luck.

I think she is working for a company that provides insurance.
Sounds to me like she can't afford the premium thru her employer -- the place I'm leaving in a few days, for my daughter and myself it cost over $300 a month.  I guess to some that's reasonable but I have had a very hard time with it.  I'd prefer to eat.

that gave you everyone who worked there's IM and then the company who bought them out isn't that way. They don't encourage contacting other MTs working there. Which has not stopped me. I still have managed to get email addresses and then get their IM. It does help tremendously when you are able to talk to others on the same account as you.
Do you have a specific company you'll be working for?
They should be able to give you specs.
If you are working for a company that totals your daily sm
lines for you then I wouldn't worry about keep track of it on word. The characters must be basing it on something else - like no spaces, spaces, 65 characters, no characters...that kind of thing.

I would just look on your company statistic board and keep track of it that way. That way it is not as confusing.

What about benefits? I make 50k a year working for a company
out of my home full time. No gas money, no traveling, no printing, faxing, and I get full benefits. How is making 50000 as an MTSO good money? I really just don't get it!
Just started working as an IC for a company, found out something I had been transcribing for
years was wrong. When I questioned it, they explained it to me, but for 20+ yearse no one else had seemed to care. You learn something every day in this business.
So, are you working for the same company. I have worked for 2 companies and I have noticed a huge
difference in the lines I got from each company. The accounts were similar. I never ever got what your talking about but I would average 600-700 lph at one company and the other one  I was lucky to get 400 lph so then I figured out they didnt pay for spaces, footers, headers etc.. and that does factor into your line counts on that platform.
Your company will dictate whether working off line via recorded work is even

Opposite for me
As I sit here in my suit, blouse, nyons, heels and pearls I just gotta feel a little feel like I am not in the norm as to what I wear to work.  Guess I will have to change the dresscode in my business.  I was thinking of letting up a little and not requiring the nylons but at the last minute just could not do it.   Perhaps in 2007 I won't be so strict with myself.  What do ya think?

At my last in-house job, the company (hospital) itself as a whole was fine, but the beyotches in the transcription department were beyond belief. I don't say anything about them to people who know them, but it is a BAD situation.
Oh, no...just the opposite!
I've got one that hits pause for every sentence. Trouble is, he starts yakkin' before he unpauses, and pauses it before he stops yakkin', so I've got no beginning and no end on every sentence he dictates. To top it off, he's a speed dictator too. ARRGHH!

Really, really annoying! I'd rather listen to empty space.

If this were one top with two arms, then I would agree, but since it is two separate tops (the top of the left arm and the top of the right arm), I would make it the tops of the left and right arms. But that Catholic school education feels like a billion years ago, so God only knows if I'm remembering the rules correctly.
I did the opposite...
I had been doing clinic and acute care, then was trained to do radiology.

I found acute care and clinic work to be far more interesting and enjoyable than the Radiology, so Rad transcription pretty much bored me senseless most of the time. I did it for 5 years, then switched back to the acute care and clinic work.

If you're up to a challenge and enjoy MT work in general, I think you'd really enjoy it. It will probably seem overwhelming at first, but you'll know some of the basics from radiology and should be okay.

13-year-old opposite
Wow my 13-year old stepdaughter is opposite. Will not wear girl clothes and wants to buy out of the boy's department. Then she gets all her good tshirts outside and ruins them with stains, holes, etc. She is very very difficult. I almost wish she would try to wear my makeup.
I learned it exactly the opposite...
back in 1980 I learned that disc was for the spine and disk was for anything ophthalmological ......
we did just the opposite, but now bills alone about 2,500.....
We had a place similar to yours on a slough with lots of wildlife...loved the wildlife. Used to sit out on the deck and watch the great blue heron, raccoons, muskrats, ducks, etc. But never got it paid off as we kept building on as kids came along (3). We were there 30 years and finally sold to move out of the flood zone and into a new, easy-maintainance one story with smaller yard up near the hospital. The other place was so hard to paint and maintain that I knew we had to move before we couldn't take care of it anymore. Problem is our mortgage alone is 900$ month! Not as steep as others on this posting, but lots for us as the MT thing is not bringing in the money I expected! The house is worth lots more than we paid for it, and I keep saying we should sell it and rent until the big housing "adjustment" that I keep predicting, but family won't budge!

My hearing is too acute, and although it makes transcribing easier, if there is any background noise at all, it is the bane of my existence. I actually went to an ENT doc once to see if there was some way to tone it down a little! He just laughed. :(

Mine are the opposite

I do look up lost dictation for my docs, they have been with me for many years --one has been for 18 years, they do give me Christmas bonues -- usually half of a month's invoice - they do give me Birthday cards, they always say "thank you", they always pay on time, never a bounced check or a question on my line counts, but then I go the extra mile for them.  They have talked about VR and EMR's but find it it too time consuming yet.  Maybe some day I will lose them to that but that is the way of the industry right now.  Right now I just thank my lucky stars for the accounts that I have and appreciate them as much at they appreciate me.   Yes, I do put up with rattling of x-rays and papers and dictating in a car or at a soccer game and when it becomes too bad, I do say something and it changes.  But in the most part they are pretty good.   Sorry will not share them with anyone.

on the test and then a few days later start to get into the account and wonder if I should really be doing better than I am doing and if they really believe it was me testing! LOL!!
I had just the opposite experience.
Bytescribe was too cumbersome and then there's the issue of three installs...Express Scribe just released a new version and there is a Special Audio Process under File that can help clean up files.

We have been given the green light for over-time this week and next. It was slow but steady November through February but now it's a whole new ballgame. I'm not complaining, though!
