Stedman's has a plastic surgery reference book. If

you are just going to be doing plastic surgery you might could get by with that and a drug book.  I use an electronic version of Quick Look and I like that, not sure how different the book might be, but either Quick Look or Drake & Drake are good drug books.

The drug books are updated every year, though I only get a new one about every other year.  I believe the plastic surgery book has been updated within the past year, so should be a good resource.  You can check the classified board here and e-bay and you might be able to find books cheaper, just be sure you are getting the most current edition.  You can go to Stedman's website to verify current edition if needed.

Stedman Surgery Book

Will post on equipment board, too.  How would I obtain an overnight delivery of a surgical word book?  I have done some orthopaedic clinic notes for about 6 months and PT for about 5-1/2 years, but am interviewing for an in-house position for an orthopaedic surgery group today, yep, today.  Everyone tells me there will not be much I haven't heard already, but I'm not sure about that.

TIA

Surgery/Plastic Surgery Transcription
Hello. I am considering taking a position in the field of plastic surgery. Can anyone recommend a way to pick up on the terminology FAST?
Plastic surgery at 28?

need plastic surgery
Thanks very much for the info.  I am having breast implants removed actually so want to make sure I find a doctor who really knows what he's doing.  I appreciate your input.  I will talk to some of the nurses; that's a good idea.
Didn't know about plastic surgery, but...sm
I can't like his music even a smidge less because of how he wants to look. His music makes me smile, makes me want to dance, and can even change my bad mood in an instant! I get a lot of teasing from my friends for liking this guy's music, but I dont' care! My stepson (8) wants to learn a John Mellencamp song so he can play it for me on his new guitar! My husband is also learning to Play Guitar, and has mastered Pink Houses just for me! I get alot of Love and Happiness from being a Mellenhead!

WestchesterMT, right on!
I don't know the particular MD, but I had plastic surgery in August. sm
What I did was talk to nurses. Nurses are a wealth of info, and they really know the docs. In my talking to nurses, I even found a few who had chosen the surgeon for themselves. I'm not shy, so I'll tell you that I had breast reduction surgery. Aside from my talking to nurses who worked in anesthesia, surgery, and oncology departments, I also spent a good amount of time with the doc. I made sure he was board certified, asked lots of detailed questions, and he also showed me photos of previous patients and the results of the surgery. He showed me photos of both good and bad results, which was a really good thing. There are risks to any surgery, and it's good to actually see what can go wrong.
It took a while, but it really paid off on the end. My surgeon and I communicated well, and I'm very happy with the results of my surgery.
Wouldn't want any of them doing plastic surgery on me,

Too bad he ruined his face with plastic surgery

Any good sites for plastic surgery? sm
Been doing reports for breast augmentation, mastopexy, blepharoplasty, Z-plasty, etc. Any web sites that may have terminology or sample reports other than MT Desk. Their site is good, but need more sample reports or terminology.
I have still to see one whose face does not scream : Plastic surgery
after they had it done.
Really!
Or Botox, for that matter.

Especially MEN just hate it!
They hate everything artificial.

Ask them!
Updating surgical references - new Stedmans Word Book, Tessier Surgery Book or others - best one in
nm
Plastic surgery only works if there's something there to work with in the first place.
She's been trying to look like her dad's "golden girls," Heather Locklear and Farrah Fawcett, for years, but it's not working, obviously never will.
Mick Jagger has NEVER had plastic surgery! Nor has KEITH RICHARDS!

We use Radiology Imaging Words & Phrases by Health Professions Institute as one of our references - this is a great book and covers all modalities.
reference book
I'd suggest Tessier's Surgical Words. The best book for op notes in my opinion.
Was it the Surgery Word Book by Tessier? nm

oncology reference book

I don't do radiology, but for oncology I highly recommend Stedman's Oncology Words.

Reference Book Questions

I am a new MT, I am in the process of purchasing MT reference books. I have heard that Greggs and Stedmans are good reference books. I wanted to find out the books that are used the most, please let me know which books that you use so I can make a good decision on how I spend this money on books.

Thank you in advance

Drug Reference Book
I love Drake & Drake Pharmaceutical Word Book.
reference book advice
I need to update a couple of my books, namely surgery and equipment words and lab words. I have never used an electronic reference and wondering if anyone has and find it easier to use. I just dread another "thing" I have click my mouse on, but wondering if that is actually quicker than looking up in a book.  Also.. I see there is some "wild card search" on Stedman's and has anyone used that and how does it work. Thanks!
Thank you so much for your very helpful reply. I do have and did look in my reference book but want
handling words with a combining 'o' not using a hyphen and was having trouble finding one. I have Stedmans Radiology 4th edition, which I scanned, circled the words, and faxed them to her. Her response was "The reference book I use is "Words of Radiology" by Kaye Atkinson" I did a Google and it is a 2nd edition book published in 1995, publisher no longer in business.

After re reading my OP I see that I spelled both incorrectly which is why they differed in Stedmans, but agree no hyphens.

Anyway, this QA person came with the clinic the company I work for bought, is related to every one in the clinic, sees all/knows all/does all. Her response is that is the way we have always done things. Sent a copy of our e-mails, her response, and my research findings to my manager. Will see how she wants to handle this in the morning.

Thanks to the others who responded below.
Tessier is not a very good reference book. I have one but
haven't used it in years.  I would suggest getting a Stedman's.  I believe they just had a new one come out either this year or last year.   There is new equipment all the time, so an updated book would save you lots of time from searching on-line.
Agreed--great little reference book!
It's one of the thinner books but sure packs a whallop when it comes to saving research time!
prosthetics/orthotics reference book needed

Does anybody have one for sale or know where I can get one for a reasonable price? I've just started doing occasional notes for Prosthetics and I'm not having much luck finding reference materials.  I've checked Barnes and Noble and ebay and have Googled like crazy, but I really don't have $150.00 to spend on a good reference book, especially as I only do this account occasionally.

Thank you!

Just started podiatry, need good reference book.

Stedman's word book nm

Stedman's Cardio book says 1/6
or 2/6, etc., page 219
4th ed stedman's ortho book
is listed on ebay for 9.99, if anyone is interested.  I have 100% positive feedback rating, so you can bid with confidence.  "judymari"
Stedman's Equipment book, but there is new

equipment coming out all the time.  I use the websites for the manufactures, Johnson & Johnson, U.S. Surgical, etc.  I Google things like Ethicon and Mitek.   Equipment is hard too because a lot of the times the whole word may be capitalized, or you think it should be 2 words and it is one word, with various parts capitalized.

When you have to look something up write it in a notebook if you don't have a reference book.  When you have down time go to the various manufacturers websites and read about their products.

A LIST? You need a whole book. Try Stedman's. nm

Thanks. I have Stedman's Med Equip book-nm

Stedman's Word Book

I just started my first MT job about a month ago and I could not do without my Stedman's Orthopaedic & Rehab Words book. If in the future I get into something else I would definitely buy another one of these!

Also have Saunders Pharmaceutical Word Book, a Stedman's Medical Dictionary and The AAMT Book of Style - all very useful.

Stedman's Radiology Book
has samples in the back of it too. Good luck. I love radiology and wish I could do it PRN at home.
I have never needed another reference book since discovering GOOGLE. No joke.

And I am a nut about getting things right.  And I had many many books.  Don't need them.  I got a Quick Book Drug Book and loaded it on my computer......and add to it when I need to add a new drug which is just about every day.  And I got a Steadman's Dictionary........same thing.  I add to it when I need to.  They are the foundation of a notebook to add words to.

I had the Stedman's Surg and Equip book
as well, and sold it after a month on E-Bay! There is just no comparison. I believe Stedman's surgical books are divided in 2 parts - naturally the one I had was never any use. The Surgical Word Book is HUGE, and it literally has everything and anything in it, alphabetically or categorically. When I first started MTing 20+ years ago, its all I used as well, and it was tiny then compared to now! It is so much more than surgical words - I mean it, it has nearly everything I ever need to look up. If I don't find it there, I go to Stedman's, and last resort google. Its so worth the investment!
Stedman's abbreviations, equipment book, a

drug book like Quick Look or Drake.   I have almost all the Stedman's books.  If you are doing multiple specialities I'd get as many references as you can afford.    Stedman's frequently has discounts and/or free shipping and that is when I add to my library.   I don't always get the newest versions, particularly if I don't use the original reference that much.  I don't get a drug book every year, but about every other year.

There are lots of on-line sources, but not all are reliable and if you are like me sometimes you get on-line to look up a word and 30 minutes later you're still on-line.

I have a Stedman's Ortho & Rehab book too

I type strictly ortho reports and that book has helped tremendously!! They have other books for other specialties too. They are worth every penny!

If you only bought 1 stedman's word book, what would it be?

Just got a new job (!) and want to take advantage of discount books from my old job (!).  Don't know what specialties I'll be working on, general acute care AFAIK.  The only book I've ever owned is Dorland's dictionary.  I'm leaning towards Medical and Surgical Equipment.... but would be really happy if anyone has any ideas for me, thanks!

And I may just Go Wild and buy two.

Have you tried Stedman's Neurology/Neurosurgery book? sm
I have a third edition(2003) I could sell you cheap ($20 including postage if you live in the continental US). The fourth edition (2006) is the latest. Just e-me if you're interested.
Stedman's Orthopedic & Rehab Words, both on CD and book
With the CD, all you do is highlight the word and click on the icon.
you must own a pathology book. Go to stedman's and order online.

Stedman's phrase book vs. Medical Phrase Index? sm
I'm debating between the newest edition of the MPI versus the Stedman's phrase book. Have had experience with the MPI, but not the Stedman's one. Is Stedman's worth it?
I was transcribing a surgery once, the surgery was over and the doctor was dictating
from anesthesia yet.  Anyway, the surgeon dictating stopped dictating and said "Hey Mary - is this one big enough for you?"  It was obvious he was talking about the patient's PENIS!  I thought HOW EMBARRASSING!  I hope they didn't make fun of my anatomy when I got my tubes tied!
New job first, save sick time, then surgery or surgery first?

I’d like to go back to medical secretary work.  I’ve had cortisone shots in my ECU tendon 3 or 4 times and was warned not to have too many or my tendon could rupture.  It’s been very weak for a year or so and my left wrist is smaller than my right wrist.  I can’t type at all with my left pinky so I think it’s ruptured.  I have Word auto correct and Instant Text set up so I very seldom type As, Qs, or Zs.  I haven’t had surgery because I have my own account, no subs, a DD in college to support, and no disability insurance and didn’t want to take time off work for surgery.  I do have medical insurance though my DH.

I’m debating whether to get a job, save up sick time, and have the surgery while getting sick time pay or have the surgery first without any sick time pay.

I’ve done medical secretary work before.  I figured if I use Word there I can save their Auto Correct and transfer mine.  If they use EMR, I can make my own shorts to stay away from Q, S and Z.  I could only accept a job where I don’t type for more than an hour straight, which is what I do now.  Then I started worrying about what if I have to use someone else’s computer?  What if I unexpectedly have to type more than an hour?

I think I have cold feet about getting a job outside the home after over 7 years at home AND I’ve had cold feet about having surgery!  Can someone help me think this through logically?  I can’t think straight when my feet are cold.
