Strongly dislike Emdat. It is not transcriptionist friendly.

In Reply to: low line count using Emdat - Ex-Emdater

It gives a great report to the doctor and the companies like it....the only shortcomings directly involve the lowest on the pay scale, the transcriptionists.

If the company is using the program fully it is not too bad, but when they won't even instruct the docs to do their part then you might as well forget about maintaining your line count.  It's sad.

EMDAT InScribe -- not friendly
Terrible platform.
I would strongly discourage anyone from
getting into this field.  I'm trying to get out after 8 years.  By the time you get your schooling, find a company that places newbies into a position, and get up to speed --- your newborn will be in school.  Don't bother, enjoy the baby and find something else.
I strongly agree.
now full-time and in this business for 19+.  I only used daycare when my first was small and I worked on-site.  Other than that, they were home with me.  They are both in school now, but it can be done.  Amanda is making a broad statement with no facts to back it up.  Many o' Moms have done this job at home without day care and faired very, very well, myself included!
I would strongly consider putting that
comment into the report.  They certainly can't think any less of you and maybe seeing it in print will make them realize the harshness of their words as well as their own stupidity for assuming you are the only MT who types for them.  Some dictators have no clue or class.
I beg pardon, but I have to strongly disagree with above post.
If your heart is pounding, if you cannot catch a breath, if your vision is blurred, if you no longer recognize your surroundings (even for a few seconds), if you feel like you are going to die.......yes, you may well be experiencing a panic attack. Or you may not.

There have been too many times that people diagnosed themselves with a "panic attack", not even knowing what that is, and ended up dying with a heart attack or stroke. As in dead.

This is simply because of ignorance.

Once again, the first thing you do is to make sure the symptoms you have are not physical. And, you go from there.

If, once diagnosed as actually having panic attacks, with no physical reasons, then you learn to deal with it. You learn to "feel" it coming. You may be happily shopping in a mall or whatever, and suddenly feel like you cannot breathe. There is not a breath to be taken in. Your heart pounds. Your vision goes. Your extremities are not responding at all. You feel you are dying right there, right then. My first impulse was always to run, but I felt my body would not cooperate. It did. It always has......because it was panic attacks, and not a heart attack or stroke, etc.

So, you sit down. You pull your car off the road. You stop frying chicken. You take yourself out of harm's way, in other words. You learn to deal with it.

But, if you do not know for sure that this is what is occurring, you're a fool to treat it as anything less than some kind of breakdown in one of your systems. Cuz that's what it feels like. And, anyone who treats that particular feeling without seeking medical advice is a fool.

Any other advice is ludicrous.
Sarah, I'd strongly recommend training SM
in a medical program in a community colleage, bypassing all the MT schools, and not aiming specifically for MT training. It seems likely that many those of us doing this work in future won't be doing THIS work precisely, i.e., transcription, but rather filling whatever future medical/clerical need evolves. It also seems likely that good-paying jobs will require a higher level of knowledge in future as mechanical dexerity (i.e., keyboard speed) becomes much, much less important. For that reason, going for at least a 2-year degree with a good medical knowledge base is recommended so you do end up with a decent-paying job as change progresses.

If at that point you wanted to do at-home medical clerical and wished to start with MT, if at all possible it would be best to begin by getting a salaried position in a medical office or hospital to carry you while you developed experience. The learning curve is very long and flat, and much of the angst displayed on these forums comes from people who still aren't making a living on a production basis after months and months of investment.

BTW, I read a newspaper article this morning suggesting that the current fiscal crisis could actually precipatate an overhaul of the medical system, forced by a desperate need to save money for patient care. I'm wondering if most of these nice long verbal reports could something the bureaucrats decided could be slashed. As I mentioned before on this forum, England went to the EMR, with doctors poking at the 1, 2, and 3, and A, B, C, and D, a long time ago.
Emdat Software Question for Emdat Users

Hello:

I have a question about the Emdat software.  Regarding the cc: box, sometimes, you have to type in the address, because the address is not in the database.  I have found that when you try to pause the audio with either the foot pedal or the "F" key assigned to pause while typing the address, the audion will not pause; it keeps on playing.  You should be able to pause the audio while trying to type the address into the database.  Anyone else notice this, anyone?  Thank you kindly.

If you dislike your job (sm)
and have been there only a few weeks, how much notice do you give?  It's an IC position, but they watch over you.  I can't take much more of it, plus I dislike the job, making very poor line count.
like or dislike
Anyone with experience typing on MTApp (Vscript) or TouchType2?  All I've worked with so far is InScribe.
I strongly disagree. I dated an engineer; most ingenous, humorous, generous
man I ever had the pleasure to meet. Being smart is smart, he has the Yummie!Wow factor too.
I must say, I deeply dislike...
having to type numerals where I know the number should be spelled out.  I cringe whenever I type it the right way and have to go back to change it.  It just goes against my common sense.
What household chore do you dislike the most

I still dislike cleaning the bathroom.
I have all boys.  Between them and their friends and the cat litter box, ugh.  It's got to be done at least twice a week.  I'd rather do anything else.  I've thought about hiring a housekeeper just to do that, but I'm teaching the boys how to clean the bathroom instead.  No half effort job accepted.  My Grandma is of the old school, so she always comments about how sad it is that I have to clean up after my husband and all our boys.  She wants me to keep trying to have kids until I can have a few daughters to help me with the housework.  No, I'd rather train the boys.  LOL
and I dislike Dr. Phil...*ROFL*...sm
Highly educated here and with more street (common) sense than MOST people in the life and I don't like Phil....
I love my job. I dislike careless MTs.

I love MY job. I dislike careless QA. LOL

The whole post was about forgiveness and love. Dislike them as you wish, but
I do admire them for their courage, love, and forgiveness they have obviously shown through their grief and tragedy. Can I ask you? Do you love and forgive like that?
No matter how much I dislike (do not hate) a person, never
ever in my life do I wish on them what you just did. You have no idea what you are doing by saying things like you do. Karma has a way of taking care of others who wish harm, sickness, bad health and even death on others. I am very glad I never have to worry about Karma because only wish the best for my friends or family. You need some counseling.
Anyone with comments on MPWord? Like, dislike, easy to learn and use? nm

Couldn't - really dislike that platform. Quit the company that uses it. Could not get a decent l
went from 385 lines an hour to 200 lines an hour tops on Bayscribe.

I could not adapt - so quit. Much happier now, back to having my own accounts.

Is it kid friendly?
x
pet friendly
I for one can identify with you.  Leaving my simon at home would be like leaving a kid at home!  For the last eight years we have planned most of our vacations around our dog.   I have found some of the greatest ones were groups of cabins on the lake (I am in Texas, so we have gone to tennessee, arkansas, etc) but I'm sure there are some close to you.  They have group cookouts, hiking, casino nights, soft ball, lots of fun stuff.  You might check something like that.
Friendly HHS contact
I was wondering if anyone had the name and number or E-mail address of a friendly person at the Department of Health and Human Services? I have a couple quick short questions concerning the HIPAA regulations.

Thanks.
Just be sure it is transcription friendly and
it has everything at your fingertips, i.e. doctor roster, automatic demographic fill-in, line cout accessible, one key to send and hopefully automatic download, good spell check, and me personally "could live without my ShortHand abbreviation expander. It works in all windows programs, so therefore I can use it on most all software programs.
My supervisor is very friendly and
personable, however, we have never met in person. We have "known" each other for years since we have both worked out of the same office a long time, he used to be an office employee, recently promoted.
I have WP 10 and I like it. User friendly. sm

I've used MS Word too, but there really isn't that much difference and its easy to learn.

Very user friendly
Although I was a newbie at the time, after finishing a MT course, they first had me on Dictaphone and then trained us on Escription/Edit Script. It was much, much easier than Dictaphone and any MT with experience would find it very easy to use. There really is not that much training needed---just to learn the commands, which is included in the tutorial. It really is a great platform.
How user friendly is it really?
nm
It is very user friendly...
...I think you'll like it.  Good luck!
Yep, VERY user friendly...
You'll be up and running into no time. :-)
I don't think it is very user friendly - sm
I used it for a day I think and then quit, hated it. Too many steps up to actually working and it was just a pain in the butt to use. There are many platforms that are much better than EMDAT.
very user friendly, productive ...
i was disappointed my lines didn't increase more dramatically over old system -- but there was an increase. I like it well enough i hope i never have to use another system. Maybe the 'decrease' in lines others report is due to messing around on the internet instead of working, as 2 minutes here and there really can add up...
hometalkcafe.com might have one. Friendly bunch there.
o
software that is user friendly (sm)
I'm not sure of the difference between software and a platform, but I just want to work for a company whose program is easy to work on, not a lot of glitches, freezes, server problems, etc. etc.  That defeats the whole purpose of what we were hired to do - TRANSCRIBE.  Also when there is a problem, it would be nice to have someone be able to help you quickly.
Is ExSpeech user friendly?
Can you make good lines on Dictaphone ExSpeech voice recognition?
The question you are asking is a very friendly way of calling on all CHERRYPICKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sm
doing work that other people either can't or won't do. You should learn just like the rest of us, how to do it all. Take it or leave it. Do them all or do none, so the rest of us won't get cheated out of "easy" reports too!

I know that at my co. you are asked what you can and cannot do. That's a joke! They move me around because I can do it all! Of course I get stuck doing crap because all the easy stuff is taken. Now, come on, is that fair? I don't think so!

so there! You heard a mouthful about one of my biggest pet peeves!
I've tried to be friendly and have a sense of humor,
so I just quit..and went about doing my job figuring they didn't have time to socialize. They seem all business... even my QA person, very cut and dry. I've tried joking with her with not much response. I wasn't sure what was expected of me in that respect.
Does anyone out there have any good pet friendly vacation ideas?? sm
Would  love to go away for a small vacation with the kids but they dont want to leave their furry friends behind...and neither do I.  I am looking for someplace that will take two dogs and is also kid friendly. I live in Ohio so I dont want something to far away. Dog friendly and kid friendly....too much to ask for????
google.com dog-friendly hotels then the state

Which platforms do you find to be the most user friendly . . . sm
and allow you to be more productive?  Your input is greatly appreciated!
Invoice program - user friendly
I currently use Abacus for line counting. I need a separate program for line counting and hourly work that is very user friendly. Any advice?
The newest version is VERY user friendly. The one right before
it stunk. Make sure you're getting to work on one that has the very newest version that came out this fall.
VISTA Friendly Transcription Companies?
I saw a post here within the last month for Vista-friendly companies.  Please email me if you know who they are.  Thanks so much!
I love BeyondText. User friendly
are pulled in with a simple search.  I was making my minimum line counts by the end of the first week.
Is their platform user friendly, or does it depend on the account?
nm
I have tried both. Smartype is user friendly, easy to learn. I'd use it again.
NM
VR program. Very user-friendly and easy to learn.

One week of working on a new platform and I do not feel it is user-friendly
Editing itself is not bad. It is the documentation of the changes I made, I think for purposes of feedback to MT, which I have to do on Word (outside of the platform) that is driving me crazy and is eating up a lot of time. I do not think I am being productive. I am paid an hourly rate but I am almost embarrassed with my production. I think doing QA without going the through the MTing using the same platform presents a lot of difficulty. Is it too early to decide whether this is a good fit for me?
Is ExText user friendly? Can you make good lines?

I will be using a foot pedal - ? Transnet.

I'm using Meditech Magic now and I can't imagine anything being worse.
