Click Tools-->Customize-->Toolbars Tab

Scroll to the bottom of the list and check the box next to "Word Count." Then a box will pop over your word document.  Then you can click and drag that box to your tool bar and drop it there and that is where it will stay.  Then when you click on it you will get the word, character with and without spaces, and line counts for your document.
