In Reply to: My concern about newbies getting a job - - Ruthie

It is hard to find a job when you are a newbie. I have been doing this a year and needed another part time job and even with a year it is hard. I remember when I was totally green though and honestly I was beginning to wonder IF I would find a job. And learning all specialties from the beginning is good. I on the other hand do clinic notes for a general surgery clinic. So that is what I know. BUT for 2 months I did acute care but it was for a learning hospital with tons of ESLs and it was so fustrating. The clinic got to the point where they needed me more on it and I let the acute care go. Now I had to get another part time job because the clinic isn't enough. The other part time job I got is Editscript VR. It is clinic but it is multispecialty. So that is good for me.

It makes total sense that editing is only as good as the editor. It makes sense that when you read through that report if something isn't right then you have to know it.
And true if us newbies can't get in the door who will do this down the road when MTs retire. Makes sense.
And good for you for giving a newbie a chance and mentoring them. You are helping someone get there foot in the door. I tell you the woman who took me in and gave me my first job passed away 2 months after hiring me. I took the time to get her husbands address and sent him a card and said hey your wife did something wonderful for me. She gave me a chance when no one else would and I will always remember that.
I tried to get in at local hospitals at the start but it seems at least in my area those jobs are taken and there aren't any available. And then you have some hospitals outsourcing to transcription companies. I had to start out with a transcription company. I started with a company then the lady passed away 2 months later and her company was bought out and fortunately they kept me and they have been wonderful to me. I have worked on that same general surgery clinic account for a year now. They even gave me a raise after being with thier company for only 5 months. So I am appreciative.
Also I did the internship with the AIM program owned by Allstate Transcription. I learned a lot with that and it helped me I believe. It is a good mentorship for a newbie after school when they need to make the transition to the real world of medical transcription.
