Never thought maybe I needed a new keyboard. DUH!

My fingers started hurting a few weeks back and I'm thinking, no big deal, goes with the territory.  Then my keyboard started leaving out "i" and "e" on occasion. I realized I have had the filthy old crumb ridden thing for almost a year and a half now, but was still to cheap to go buy a new one.

Finally dumped my coffee on the keyboard (sign from above?), but turned it over and tapped on it figuring it was good as new until the next morning when everytime I hit "r" I'd get rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

So I sped down to the local "pharmacy that has everything store" and bought a generic keyboard that was on sale for $8.99. I was amazed at the fact that all I have to do is touch the keys. No effort whatsoever and I was flying with my wpm..

I had no idea my keyboard had become so bad that I was basically pounding on the gunky old keys.  DUH!

Finger pain is diminishing already and I've decided to stop being such a tightwad and replace my keyboard at least every six months.

I also invested in a coffee mug with a cover on it.

When I started VR I thought out what I needed
in order to have the same salary as I had with straight and make it. I so disagree with the blanket statement "make more money by editing. I think it is the lower producers." I think people who assume are usually wrong. I make an excellent salary and FYI, in years past doing straight transcription I also made an excellent salary. Why do people assume so much?
Wow, I thought she was an in-house MT and needed to relocate
Guess I better go back and read again.

Well, to be totally outright... QA should not be needed...... if u are good at your job!!!

absolutely agree; they needed a good dose of Exlax. where was the local talent.

Hey! I never thought of that! LOL. Good one. er,
Wonder what it does stand for...
I thought better of you, Bus. Not good to talk
    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
I thought I was fairly good at them
got several that I absolutely could not understand 1/2 of what was being said. Made 100 lines in 3 hours!!!!
Good idea. I had actually thought of that..

I was reading on the local police web page about starting the neighborhood watch and it basically said the same thing, or to knock on people's doors and ask if they would be willing to come to meetings.  We haven't had a meeting in my neighborhood in over 11 years, so I think it's time now since so many people have come and gone, or rented out their houses.  Other people may have a different list of problems to add to mine.

    Thanks for the response.

Good point. I had another thought also...
I was wondering if maybe some of the work is actually being sent overseas for cheaper labor for a few days or so to help save the company money in this ailing economy.  Have known this to happen with a couple other companies.  But, as you said, if something major were to happen, there would be an MT influx into other companies and maybe back into the hospitals.  I have mixed feelings on this...it's nice to work at home, but hospitals usually have decent/reasonably priced benefits that do not depend on line output.
hadn't thought of that either! Good for you! nm

    We are quickly becoming ...
a Christian version of the Islamic Republic, where religion is an integral part of every aspect of life. I'm not sure what you are saying here. I would have no problem typing that if it was part of the dictation in a medical report, but I would find it very inappropriate if my employer said that or I was asked to participate. If I want to pray in public I'll go to church or an AA meeting.
very good All Stars 7 I thought - happy Boogie

Good article--worth thought, rather than just reacting. Thanks, Anony.NM

what is this WE thing? this country is quickly
Run by a dictatorship, by religion and greed.  WE are not rich.  We live in a country run by the rich, who got that why taking money off of our labor.  Look at India, divided between rich and poor.  The rich have houses made of gold, the poor live off 15 dollars a month.  Our dictators do not have gold houses but they have deep green pockets.
    Learn a lesson quickly...
After 8 years of loyalty, I can tell you one thing for sure loyalty gets you no where.
QA editors adapt more quickly, but anyone can....
do VR if they are a decent MT. You're basically listening to the voice, making changes. If you know your stuff, you're fine, i.e. knowing the difference between "your" and "you're."
Get some liquid Benadryl in him quickly and
People can develop allgeries suddenly and for no apparent reason and it's much easier to deal with when you have your senses about you than wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of his gasping for air!
I did in the past, got burnt out very quickly. sm
It is very difficult to do. I lasted about 5 years working 16 hour days, and by that time I was exhausted, stressed out, and my financial issues never disappeared.

It really is not worth the money to do that to yourself in my humble opinion.
And editing 100% VR, we wil quickly lose

How to quickly number med lists?
What is the quickest way to number a medication list? We have to number all of a patient's medications in a vertical list (voice recognition). - very time consuming - slowing me down. Any MT's found a fast way to number medications and put in a straight list on left margin QUICKLY? This is ridiculous. The voice recognition correctly or incorrectly gives the medications, but it is very slow numbering them and putting them in a vertical list -and we are required to do that. Any help would be appreciated!
Good luck to you folks. I hope I can perk up soon. I thought I was the only one with this disease

Lucky. I love long reports. I thought I got a good one, but it was a 1.5 minute
report with 12 minutes of dead air. Sit here and do nothing. For free.
    I love mine, adjusted quickly.
But don't spill a latte in it...and the dishwasher trick doesn't work for it. I had to go out and buy a new one...and ergonomics are getting hard to find in my area!
Oops. Hit the send button too quickly.

How long before the person asking if you "want flies with that" will be from another country?

I can also understand why someone would move to another country to work because of economic reasons.  We're approaching a time where the cost of a gallon of gas may be higher than the hourly minimum wage.

    Seek medical attention quickly.
It could be an allergic reaction.
I'd grab it quickly. W/o spaces you average about
15% less - so that is an excellent rate - good for you!!
No you can't survive on sex and chocolate but will die happy probably pretty quickly.
It would be a bummer to watch Johnny Dep get old and cranky anyway.
I am very real, thank you. I work quickly and efficiently. I know the terminology and when I come
across something I don't know I do my best to reference until I find it. If I absolutely cannot find it, I will send it to QA. The same goes with something I can't understand. I will listen several times and if I still can't understand it I send it on to QA for their help.
Tax guy told me because of nature of job and way computers outdate so quickly, could get new one
    :+
XX,, I promise you can double that typing speed quickly SM
then triple it, and eventually quadruple it with an Expander used right. You're doing something wrong, but I assure you once you know what it is you can correct it easily and immediately start seeing the benefits having your expander do much of the typing for you.

To begin with, though, most of your increased speed is going to come NOT from inserting blocks of text standard for one dictator but rather abbreviations for the individual words, phrases, and headings you're constantly typing anyway.

For instance, I type RPSV for "reports that." It wasn't hard to remember. Variations of "report" are used constantly, so RP became report, RPS reports, RPG reporting, RPD reported. V is "that." AO is "also" for me, and F is "he", so "he also reported that" becomes FAORPDV and "he also reports that" becomes FAORSV. This is the first time I've seen those on paper; you don't memorize the long forms, just string together the constantly used short ones. Amazingly quickly your fingers remember (muscle memory?) so you don't have think about it.

Smartype is probably not the best expander but fine to start on since you have it. Later on, better programs have conversion programs that will allow you to move your abbreviations to that program.

In the meantime, go to productivitytalk.com and start reading and asking questions. If you wish, you can import a whole ready-made dictionary compiled by an MT abbreviations.

But you could also take another tack for now just as a trial. Instead of trying to use Smartype's abbreviations, if that's what you're doing, enter just a handful of your own that you can get very familiar with. I love these that I use and am happy to pass them on to anyone who wishes to try them:

    Make T expand to "the"
    F expand to "he"
    G expand to "him"
    K expand to "she"
    J expand to "her"
    T expand to "the"
    B to "but"
    Q to "who"
    R to "right"
    L to "left"
    F to "for"
    D for "and"

That's more than enough for now. If you do this, I think in a couple of days you'll be loving how a quick tap of the finger drops in all these little words so much that you'll eventually become addicted to abbreviating everything in sight--and to watching your scores on your speed tests rise and rise and rise... Best wishes.
same way in nursing - men in nursing make more on average than women in nursing and quickly
move into management. Just what we needed.
Ah yes! Me too, and I needed it!

EMR's -- we will still be needed

I work at a clinic part-time typing into EMR's as well as running my own company.  But now they are loading Stedman's spell check and work expanders onto Word so that I can type in word and then transfer the info over to the electronic chart.  I type faster in word.  They found that it is faster for the doc to dictate rather than type into the chart and not only that, insurances were questioning the "standardization" of the chart notes.   Too similar.  So I do make sure that even though I use expanders, and macros, I do make some minor changes to "standard exams" so it does not all look the same, but this is with the approval of the docs.  But they can see at least 4-6 additonal patients and dictate all the notes rather than type then and are able go home at 5 o'clock instead of 7.   Also the TAT is 48 hours and not weeks as the docs would never finish the notes.   So we will still be here just typing under a different format.

    Thanks, I needed that!
    :)
No, what for? Never needed it. nm

thanks, but not what I needed to know
Gee, thanks for all that information. I am well aware that I could send an email, and I am well aware of how to crunch the numbers in terms of rate of pay. I was just hoping to hear from someone who already works for the company. Thanks anyway.
Thanks.. that's what I needed to know
Wasn't sure if it was something routine on every sale or if it was that the buyer backed out. I'll just let it stay there and see if I get payment! I'm hoping to get the hang of listing stuff on ebay, but it took me 2 hours to list that one item!  LOL...
yes MTs will always be needed...nm

Sorry if that's not what you needed. sm
I reread your post. I tried to find specifics about the profile tests and couldn't find anything either.
    Thanks, I needed this
I want to thank you for this post. I was feeling really down about my job with voice recognition and I know I am not out there by myself, but I really needed a good laugh about being a psychic transcriptionist. LOL.
Thanks, just want I needed to know

Because I will probably get a Dell laptop pretty soon.

    Thanks again for the help

    Thanks, I needed that, too.
