  I'd say buh-bye.  Your not going to use them as a reference obviously, so if it's that much of a drag, I'd say contact them right away, preferably by telephone, and say, "I'm sorry, this just isn't working out for me, but I thank you very much for the opportunity."  You cut your losses, they cut theirs.  I did that once in a completely unrelated field to this and it was the best move I could have made for myself.  There are some times when you just KNOW something is going to be a complete waste of your time and it's best to just cut and run...(no pun intended on current political climate).
