There's nothing klunky about it.

There are hot keys that you can use if you don't have a foot pedal; they take some getting used to but I don't think klunky is how I would describe that experience--different maybe.

Of course, with any player, the footpedal is a must if you're doing any serious amounts of transcription on a regular basis. The tweaking is easy enough to do. I would strongly recommend you download it and try it. You have nothing to lose since it is free.
