C-phone and dialup

Does anyone have any experience using a c-phone on dialup internet?  Any glitches or drawbacks?  Thanks.

not many companies offer that either.
x
May have to change phone companies, have switched to job using a C-phone. sm
Currently have Embarq (formerly Sprint), and my usage will be going up about 12,000 minutes a month.  What phone companies offer really unlimited for a flat rate?  TIA.
There are a couple of companies who offer that to ICs, although
most accounts that pay that line rate have a heavy load of ESLs and they have to offer that to get anyone to even apply.
Some phone services offer CallNotes

Or some variation of them, in which your messages are recorded by the phone company instead of on an answering machine. Usually you can select how you will be alerted (one beep, or they may have a special signal for emergencies, whatever) so that way you can finish the report you are in and then get your message. There is usually a charge for this service, but it should only be a couple of dollars a month.

When I was using a C-phone, I had one of those Tracfone "disposable" phones (you can buy more minutes for it and keep it activated) and gave that number for people to call me during working hours. At Wal-Mart they're about $15 (and up, if you want to get fancy) and it costs about $20 to add two hours of phone time, which you have to do every two months to keep it active.  So it's not real cheap, but it's less expensive than adding a regular phone line.

Just something to consider.....

Does anyone know what companies offer voice recognition of your dictation?

Many companies offer benefits for at-home employees
Hi.  I'm a single mom and I work from home as a full-time employee plus benefits with flexible hours.  Have to meet a certain minimum line count in a two-week period to keep the benefits.  Also have a part-time IC job.  Look around.  You should be able to find a job where you can stay home and get benefits.
Our cable company doesn't offer phone service yet, and anyway,
I don't know if I'd want everything dependent on their service for all my needs. Even my internet is not as dependable as it should be, yet there is nothing wrong according to them. I already pay for internet and TV to the tune of $147 a month and they are raising it in Jan. again.
Do most companies that offer this way of typing usually download their part onto your computer? sm
Or am I thinking of something totally different.  The past few companies I have worked for have downloaded their programs onto my computer.  I receive the files and send them via internet through their computer.  Is this the same thing?  Sorry, I know how to transcribe but am computer illiterate (?sp).....thanks...
Those companies count on that
Those big companies try to make like it is a girls night out and they count on you being made to feel guilty by your friends. I just tell everyone I don't "go to those things."

Companies have to be able to count on
I think you had the wrong idea to begin with.

IC positions used to be quite a bit more popular then companies figured out that most MTs are not very good at keeping a decent schedule on their own. Companies have to be accountable to their clients to meet TAT.

I would require a strict schedule, the same as inhouse.

No one ever said working at home was "flexible". I think you assumed the wrong thing. You are home - flexibility means you are with your family without having to leave the house. You can get up and put the clothes in the washer or every once in a while do something around the house but you still have to work. Your employer has to meet their TAT obligations.

MT companies without line count req.

Does anyone know of any MT companies that do not require a specific weekly line count and lets you set your own hours (part-time)?  I need something about 10 to 15 hours a week.  Thanks.

The majority of companies DO NOT count
those. I happen to be lucky and work for 1 who counts both and my IC counts headers, but not footers.
It absolutely is a way to cut an MT's line count since most companies don't pay for headers,

footers, and anything in the template.  This one of the BIG reasons why I decided to give up working for the nationals.  I bit the bullet and went back to work in the office for a while and then finally I found a job with a hospital that allows me to work at home, pays me hourly plus incentive, and doesn't try to cheat me out of my line count.

I just always felt like I was working my rear end off lining the pockets of the MTSO's while they nickeled and dimed me to death!

That's my 0.02 cents worth!

I've been with so many companies, large and small, I can't count anymore. nm

Is it legal or phone companies to monitor...sm

your phone line usage?  I know of 5 different MTs now, two in California and one in Indiana, two in Illinois, that have had phone companies call them and say that they are illegally using the phone line for computer modem or what not and that they have to stop or will be charged biz rate of 3 cents or 5 cents a line, depending on the state.  Some of the girls use a phone line to get the dictation but a modem to do the work and they are still being told this.

At 3 or 5 cents per minute, for me that would be over 400 bucks a month and that is quite a HUGE chunk to pay for working with what we do make.

How can they do this legally?  You are not doing anything wrong AND if they are monitoring the lines, they would hear the voices of the dictation so they would not think this is just modem usage for hours.

Anyone know if this is legal to do?  Since AT&T went with SBC is is worse bz now the ones that switche to SBC are getting hit by this too.

Maybe you could just put your past supervisor's names with the companies phone number?
I know exactly what you mean. It's hard when you work at home and don't really work closely with anybody or with anybody other than your immediate supervisor and QA people who actually get to see your work.

Have you ever worked outside the home? Maybe you could put previous coworkers or supervisors. If you don't have a number, just put the company's number on there.

Good luck and God bless!
I've been screwed over by the big phone companies too, but once you switch to a business line,
a lot more options are opened up to you. Talk America has an unlimited long distance business line for $49.95. I've been with them for over a year now. I also tried calling cards, which are an even bigger rip off.
Do you have any connections in the industry?
If not, you might as well forget it.  The people/companies that land accounts are the ones that know people and have connections at the hospitals, offices, etc.  If no one knows you from Adam, then they aren't going to give you the time of day.
Transcend now allows satellite ISP connections...sm
You can contact one of the recruiters for more information or apply on-line at http://www.transcendservices.com
Offer 1 week notice, but willing to offer 2 if they would be in a bind. Also, (sm)
make sure your resignation letter is written with class.  Never good to burn your bridges.
a router "routes" internet connections. sm
a wireless router routes internet connections wirelessly. The ethernet cable connects to where your Internet comes into house and then you plug another ethernet cable into your PC, and if you bought a router with a booster, you get these fantastic connection speeds of 100 mbps. But the other devices (laptop, X-box controller, etc.) connect either with an Ethernet cable to the router or pick up the wireless signal from the router. We have a wireless router and my PC is connected via Ethernet cable to router, and my laptop and the  X-box both pick up the Internet from the router wireless-ly.
i know this may sound crazy, but did you make sure all your connections were sm
plugged in good? mine did that one and it wasn't plugged in completely.
In addition to "port" settings, also try different ports or USB connections sm
on your computer. Mine would not work in the USB plugs in the front of my PC. Mine also would not work on laptop if I was going through a USB adapter to allow more USB outlets. I had to plug it directly into a USB port on the laptop. Mess around with it, updating your settings and doing the wizard each time. Also, reboot and see if it works. If not, try another port/setting.
DIALUP??

Please give me some companies that I can do QA or edit for?  thanks, I don't have broadband right now.

Dialup
I have actually had good luck my Earthlink dialup and have worked for two different companies without difficulty, but many of the jobs posted specify NO dialup or satellite.
Yes, there is on dialup internet. Is that what you use?

Call waiting can also affect it if you don't turn it off in your dialup settings.  Before I get technical, do you use dialup, DSL, cable or something else?

dialup/satellite
Can I ask where did you get your satellite from? I too, live in the sticks and have only dialup. It sounds like dialup takes forever.
dialup/satellite
Thanks for the info. I notice a lot of companies won't allow satellite for security. Did you have to get additional spyware, antivirus, etc?
Anyone else still stuck with dialup?

Hello MTs

Is anyone else out there still stuck with dialup?  I am getting so frustrated with the long loading times.  I live in a rural area, and I cannot get DSL or cable.  Anyone have any other alternatives to slow internet?

Thanks.

Lynn

Dialup Internet (sm)

Any MTs left that only have dialup internet available to them?  Bellsouth said we would get it in 2-3 years (big wow).  I would like to change MT companies but cannot find anyone who accepts dialup internet.  I could probably get satellite but I notice many companies won't accept this either.  What's a girl to do?

I'm on dialup, no problems.
nm
Wildblue, dialup, etc. sm
How far are the trees away from your house? I have some trees to the south too but probably 500+ away. I had considered getting Wildblue. I'm stuck with dialup too and have lost accounts because I can't get high speed. It really limits things, but on the other hand a lot of companies don't allow satellite and I hate to invest that much money and then not be able to use it to work.
dialup vs satellite vs???
You certainly don't want satellite even if you could afford it.  Always out anytime there are clouds etc.  Itype is a very strange platform anyway.  I have worked on it numerous times.  What state are you in?  I think the best would be the air card on cell, if available and if affordable.  You may end up switching who you work for or where you are going to move... neither of which is desirable, I bet.
I believe accelerated dialup is just - sm
that graphics download faster, nothing to do with voice files. They just do not download the graphics with the normal clarity, they are fuzzier and not so precise. So paying more for accelerated will get you no where.
Jobs on dialup/satellie
Anyone know good companies that will hire MTs with dial-up...or satellite, & pay something towards internet connection (satellite very expensive).  I live in a rural area where cable & DSL not available.
I am probably going to be changing from dialup to DSL - just exactly what do I need - new modem? nm

Asking about dialup, work, jobs, etc. (SM)
If you are looking for a job, please read the job ads on the Job Seeker's board. The ads are very descriptive and have contact information for your convenience.

Otherwise, the Company board is for asking about a specific company (or companies).

Goldbird

Spheris has dialup and are decent enough
nm
I was always told that Editscript will not work with dialup.
I have worked on this platform for over four years and for a few different companies and not one of them every told me that dialup would work. Did you tell your employer that you had dialup?
i live way out in the country of GA, dont have dialup but
was lucky to have ATT serve this area. You must be moving way out if you cant get cable internet or DSL!!! Good luck Hon!!!
DocQScribe platform - Dialup works.
Might try finding a company who uses this and see more and more do. One is DSG I think it was but might email them and ask

Check the connections from where the cable originates to wear it comes into the house. Also check t
had a similar issue with TWC and they had done some upgrades and the modem I had was no longer compatible.  The tech knew what the problem was the minute he saw the modem, only it took me about 3 months and threatening to cancel for them to get out here.
I'm doomed with dialup, too. It's simply AWFUL!!! Bright House plans on sm

servicing my area soon, after March sometime.   My suggestion would be to bug whichever companies supply DSL or broadband in your area.  Be relentless.  This is 2006.  There is no reason to settle for dialup!!

I feel your pain.

Take the character count divded by 65 and that will give you your line count.

it does not count gross lines...I count 37 and it counts 67.

C-phone used to call in to dictating systems to receive work. A special phone. nm
nm
I had a lot of trouble with static in my C-phone. I replaced the phone cord and that made a big

difference.  Also, have you tried a different headset?  Also someone told me one time that there is a microphone under your volume control on the right corner of the C-phone.  It's a tiny hole.  If you break off a Q-tip and stick that into the hole that will squelch a lot of background noise and that worked as well.  As far as getting your C-phone service, I heard that Dictaphone is "sunsetting" C-phones at the end of this year.  Meaning, they aren't going to service them anymore as they are considered an obsolete technology.  So, I would contact Dictaphone and see what your options are.

I know very little about Lanier equipment.  I've not used it as extensively as Dictaphone.  Is there a local appliance repair place in your area?  You might ask one of those places to take a look at your equipment and see what they think.  Kinda scary, cause they could do more harm than good, but maybe worth a shot.

Not much help, I know.  But I thought I would share what tiny bit of obscure knowledge I do have.

I've changed them between an old phone and new phone, but the same company, i.e. Nextel.

I use my c-phone whenever we travel. You can hook it directly into your room phone. Be sure and as
