There are sound file conversion utilities out there

that you can download for free. I actually used to have the opposite problem; the doc sent me WMA files which uploaded fine but wouldn't play without glitches, so I used to convert them to WAV files (which worked well). The program I used was called BeeThink. I never actually tried to use it to convert in the opposite direction, so I am not sure it will work for that, but it's worth a try.

Conversion program for digital sound files - sm

A long time ago I saw a listing regarding a program that would convert sound files, ex. dss to wav; etc.  I need to convert a .dvf file to .wav.  Any ideas?

Sound File
I have the Start n' Stop system, as well. I had used an FTP program to download the files I was to transcribe and sometimes during transfer, the file would become corrupted and all I would get was static. This had nothing to do with the foot pedal or the SnS system, it had to do with the FTP program only. Ask your provider to resend the file. You will have to delete the file you already have though, or it will be the same way. good luck

What is the sound file extension?

In other words, what type of sound file is it?  There are different sound file formats out there.  You may be able to play it in Express Scribe so you'd be able to use your footpedal.  It sounds as if you have your computer set to play certain sound files through QuickTime.  You're not using a Mac, are you?  Or do you have the PC version of Quicktime?

You can change the file association by single right clicking on the file, open Properties, then change Opens With by clicking the box to the right and selecting a different sound player.  Another way to do it would be to open Express Scribe (if that's what you're using, as long as it is compatible with your sound file type), then Open Dictation File and browse for the sound file.  Some of the sound files need patches from Express Scribe to be able to play, but the program and patches are free.

And yes, those companies that provide their lousiest dictation to test with are probably ones you wouldn't want to work for anyway, because the test file IS representative of the garbage they'll be pushing at you daily.  (Especially if you do really well on it!!!)

Listen to this sound file. Nagin

If these people were part of Georgie's "Base---the haves and have mores" this wouldn't have happened. You can bet on it.

Sometimes it helps to convert the sound file - sm
I notice that when I play straight DSS files my Bytescribe will not restart at the beginning after I reach the end, but rewind 2 seconds or so and keep replaying the end; but if I convert them to .wav files (which I do by "opening" them with another .wav player called "PowerPlayer"--downloaded the free trial and just use it for this) then I do not have this problem, it will just restart at the beginning after I reach the end. So that may be affecting it, or a setting is off, or there is corruption of the file or player maybe. Lots of possibilities.
Regarding the buzzing. The ad that has a buzz sound file
attached to it has been queued for removal, however it usually takes a few days for Google to remove the ad.  We have no control over what appears, but we can remove ads.  Unfortunately, there is a wait time that is unavoidable. The buzzing only occurs when that particular banner appears.  When you hear the buzzing try refreshing the page or there are some instructions in the thread further down the page where you can set parameters regarding sound accordingly.

I have no idea what QASAR is but at my company it is the same sound file...
not all companies are like what you are describing
Do google search for Switch Sound File Converter...
and follow instructions - VERY easy!
Utilities
My office and storage space consists of 22.25% of my house sq footage.  Turbo tax will divide all utlities by the amount of use of your office.  As for internet, it is under my business name, on my business computer and I need it 90% for business so I write off the entire amount.
How do u determine how much of utilities to use?
I wouldn't think u could use the whole amount.  I get reimbursed for net service so I can't use that, right?
also heating up, utilities up, pay has not gone up...in fact
I am tired of being told I have to sacrifice for the good of the someone else, whether it is for a rich, fat corporation, or the government, whoever.  why do I have to sacrifice - I already live at poverty level because my wages are the same from 10 years ago, and my cost of living has over doubled in those same 10 years...
REnters can write off part of the utilities...
and rent in proportion to the amount of space dedicated exclusively to work.  You can write off part of your renter's insurance, too, as it covers your computer, reference books and such.    The point is, renter or homeowner, you can write off all work-related expenses (just remember the "write-off" is only a percentage of the actual expense).

When I first started, it took about an hour to do 10 minutes of dictation. Now I can do 10 minutes of dictation in about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on if I had to do the demographics, research medications or words, or locate doctors addresses. I would say a good average would be 20 minutes for 10 minutes of dictation. Good luck. I also would offer to take some work, if he would agree. I could use a little extra for a month or so. thanks. No you are not! I'm a single mom and I'm trying to make a house payment, pay utilities.... SM

buy groceries, and provide for my two kids all on one paycheck.  I recently got a job doing QA and getting paid per hour and that has helped me tremendously, but I know how it is to scrape by on 8 cpl, low line counts due to a number of factors that work against us (high ESL accounts, technical difficulties, and interruptions).  It isn't worth shelling out $300 for certification when you get very little in return not to mention the $300 could be better spent on clothes for the kids or to pay the electric bill or to buy groceries, etc.

We should be treated better than slave labor!  It's ridiculous and very discouraging to say the least.  Hang in there!  I've been studying coding on my own and I'm about confident enough to take the CCS exam.  After that, I may move on to RHIT, but that means back into the office.  So we'll see.

Conversion of wav files - sm

I got a wav file that opens into Windows Media.  I want to be able to get this into my Express Scribe.  Is that possible and if so, how?

Thanks for ANY help.

Conversion of WAV files
Yes, you should be able to play the WAV file in Express Scribe. What you need to do is find where the WAV file is located (such as c:, which file folder, etc. etc.) If you don't know where the file is located, try using windows explore and search that way. You will then need to open up Express Scribe and do a MANUAL load. This will give you the opportunity to specify where the file is located. You should then be able to find the file and load it. You may, while in windows explorer want to move the file to a location that is easy for you to remember, thereby making it easier to load in Express Scribe. I've had the same thing happen to me several times...it's frustrating until you get the hang of it. HTH.
autocorrect conversion to SH
I have version 8.7, below is what I found in the HELP file. For a different version, go to your HELP file and the INDEX tab, type in AUTOCORRECT and then hit DISPLAY for the instructions. When I first started using SH 10 years ago, it worked for me. I never use the autocorrect any more.

SHCNV - ShortHand File Converter Utility

Run the SHCNV utility by choosing “Run File Converter” from Shorthand’s File menu.

SHCNV is a utility to convert MS Word (Versions 6.0, 95, 97 and 2000) AutoCorrect entries, PRD+, Abbreviate!, Smartype, formatted ASCII text files and older Shorthand (v4.x and earllier) dictionaries to the Shorthand 8.x dictionary format. Files created by Shorthand 5.x through 7.x do not need to be converted to Shorthand 8.x. This utility can also be used to merge two Shorthand 8.x dictionaries.
This would be a very inaccurate conversion.
A timed test will give you wpm for that type of skill. In truth, you probably type about 25 to 35 wpm when transcribing. Not your fault and you are not slow. You have to take time to change jobs, to spell check, look up words, listen to the pauses, go back and make changes, etc.

In a timed test, you do a straight 5 minutes of typing and its over.

When hiring people to complete forms, such as admission data, intake data, motor vehicle info, etc., the managers are much happier hiring someone who types slower but has 100% accuracy, because you cannot achieve over 25 wpm typing a form.

If you type 60 wpm (which is considered slow by those who know nothing but the wpm rate), and could maintain that for 8 hours, you would be transcribing 360 lines per hour, or 2800 lines per 8 hour shift without the use of an Expander or macros. I doubt there are many of us that can actually do that.

There are free typing tests that are timed on the internet. Take one of those and see how you do.
W9, equipment, driving back and forth, paper, ink, utilities. They'll get a 2 wk notice

Does anyone know the formula for converting lines per hour to words per minute?
Looking for conversion/comparison chart sm

I'm getting paid gross lines right now and my company is going to be using new software which will use 65-char lines.  I'm looking for some sort of chart that shows the difference in $.

Any help will be gratly appreciated.

Thanks

Free audio conversion...
It might be a trial thing, and I can't remember but is works extremely well and is an easy step-by-step thing.

Glossary conversion question...would appreciate ANY help! sm

I have been using Instant Text for quite a few years, but wanted to switch to Stedman's Smart Type.  My co-worker uses it on the same account and is doing on average 50 lines per hour more than me.  She and I type about the same speed so I'd at least like to give it a try.

Does anyone know if it is possible to convert my IT glossary into Smart Type?  I guess I'm an old dog, but I just can't bring myself to  start from scratch with a new glossary.  Thank you!

Conversion programs (see message)

If you have an Expander program for WP5.1 (DOS?), there might be conversion macros available on line that could import your list into AutoCorrect/Text with possibly some clean up required.  I still have my old DOS PRD Productivity Plus that I used a few years ago and was able to convert it into ShortHand (currently use), which I have in turn imported into AutoC/T (and vice versa) when needed.

High-speed conversion
see link.

Pricey. Maybe there's a cheaper one out there. Guess it would depend how much of this kind of work you'll be doing.

d
it can also perform utilities - one stroke deletes 1 through X words to the left, jump up

Yes, all utilities, garbage pick-up, home repoairs involving your office, etc
:+
Does anyone know where I can find a conversion table for cpl rates?
Like if you make 13 c/70 character line how to figure what that would be at a 60 character line, etc.  Thanks for the the help.
You need to download the conversion pack from Microsoft
website and then you should be able to convert your documents. Not sure if it will convert from Word 2003 or 2007 to WP5.1; however, WP5.1 can be converted to Word 2003 and higher.

Rename your normal.dot file to something else then restart Word. It will create a new file.

I deduct all expenses that relate to my home office-% of utilities, taxes, repairs to that room, --s
mortgage (we do not plan to sell our house so this deduction will not affect us)as my office is used only for that purpose, internet, phone, I print out a daily schedule so paper/ink, computer repairs, pens, pencils, tape, staples, file cabinets, storge bins for tax recepts/tax returns, file folders. Anything/everything I use to do my job.

I was using mileage for another account where I pick up tapes every day, but found for me the time it took to keep track of the mileage, write it down, add it up was not worth the effort so I quit doing it this year.
I think it is the same type of file, so rename it and replace your autocorrect file with your DQS us

Help..I lost my word file. How can I retreive a file that has been changed? sm

I was working on a large file and had saved it in Word. I then went back to work on the file and hit a key that made the page go blank.  When I went to close the document it asked me to save any changes on the document. I answered yes, and now when I click on that document it is all blank! Shouldnt the previous info saved be there, even if the current stuff is not? Please help me!! Thank you

Depends on the file format of the Short Cuts file.
ShortHand comes with a utility file that can import various formats. You can get that file with the trial download of SH.

...with your user.aco file. Save your autocorrect file to somewhere else. nm

You can save the SH file in a text file and import to IT that way. sm
You may have to do some cleanup in the SH text file, but it sure would be faster than re-entering them all manually.
File taxes under the name on file w Social Security....
Name on W2 doesn't have to match, but your tax return has to match SS records. They don't want your marriage license or anything else. Did that for 13 years as instructed by IRS. Didn't have to change it with SS until state changed rules requiring drivers license to match SS records. Still use my maiden name in some limited circumstances.
Has anyone disconnected the internal sound card and replace with another sound card?

I am having problems with my sound on one of my computers.  Several different ExText program have been on it so I don't think it is the program and the sound is just now as clear as on my other computer.  Has anyone switched (disconnected the internal sound care and replaced) to a new sound card?  Did it make a difference.

Everyone on this board is so knowledgeable, I really appreciate you.  You have helped me many times.

an .exe file is not a voice file
I'm no techie, but it sounds like they might've sent the wrong file by mistake. Or could it be a program you need for testing/working for them that they sent? What is the name of the file (if it is something you can say here)?
You do sound FAT, but you don't sound RICh.
Go live in Iraq or something.
Maybe they are going to file
a Chapter 11 (I think that's the number) where they do a corporate restructuring.  I'm hardly an expert on bankruptcy law and stuff, but, if I'm not mistaken, some of the airlines have filed bankruptcy, are still flying, and trying to get back on top of things.  Businesses do it all the time.  Of course, it would help with MQ if those fat cats at the top would stop giving themselves million dollar bonuses.  Not saying that would put them in the black, but it would be a little easier to hear when they send memos out saying MQ is losing money.
Bad DSS file
Why do doctors think we are miracle workers? Or better yet, mindreaders? A bad connection is a bad connection. Unless you have some miracle machine like on CSI, etc. (haha), there's nothing here that can be done. Doctor's loss as he will not re-dictate it, but sadly enough - you're the one who takes the blame. You horrible transcriptionist, you. :-) Good luck.
This is the help file you need.

They each have their own file SM

I like the idea about the macro, but am not sure how to do it as there are headers and footers on the original template.

BOS pdf file?

Does anyone have the BOS pdf file they could spare a copy of?  I just need to print out a couple of pages.  I used to have it but have no idea what i did with it... I think I lost it when my hard drive crashed. TIA!

I did file by file BUT
My files were every note for the day of that particular doctor.  I would only divide it up by doctor and their date of service.  That should be good enough.  It is good for them to have for expensing, and if they do question something, the counts are right there in front of them.  If they want the detail it is there, if not they can decide.  If for some reason they tell you they don't need the details, get it in writing via e-mail or something.
have pdf file for ...
