Can you tell us who this is with the bad sound quality? nm

sound quality

I'm totally with you!  I used a Lanier station for the first 15 years of my career and the sound quality was superb compared to the internet dictation.  One thing you might try, if you have not already, is to make sure your speakers have a tone dial.  Lots of these companies provide speakers that only have a volume dial or they want you to plug right in to the PC but there is no tone setting on the voice program.  Turning the tone to high helps un-muffle the sound.  Good luck!

Sound quality may/may not be the
the wav player but your sound card.  You can get a new sound card or you can get a USB thing and bypass the sound card.  I'm not sure exactly what the thing is called but the one I have is by Turtle Beach and is called Audio Advantage.  I got it at Best Buy for about $30.   You can Google and read about them.  There are 3 different ones to choose from.   I didn't think it made a huge difference, but I went on a working vacation once and didn't bring it and realized how much difference it did make.  You can adjust all kinds of things on it, which will be a trial and error thing for you.   If you have Win98 or less you can't access all the features though.
sound quality

I have had a couple of at-home jobs in which the dictation was received by phone line.  Is it true that the sound quality is better this way?  I am currently looking for a new job and wondering if dictation via internet will be a rude surprise in comparison.  Appreciate any comments.

Sound quality.....MT : QA
This is an excerpt from a post from an MT some while ago and I AGREE 100% WITH IT:

'Is it me, have I totally lost it, or is the sound quality on the QASAR playback FAR better than the quality on the original job?

Last night I had job after job dictated by a gal who mumbles, speed talks, fades in and out, rattles papers, and it sounds as if she is talking through a shoe. I listened repeatedly. I had my husband listen. I even stuck the headset on the cat to no avail; none of us could understand her as she rattled off study meds.

This morning I check QASAR and while QA couldn't get everything she said either, the sound was crisp, clear, and sharp as a bell. I find this very frustating. If the sound on my end had been this good while I was transcribing I could have gotten the majority of these blanks and saved QA some work.'

I think the sound quality is not that great.

Laptop sound quality
I am looking at purchasing a Dell Vostro laptop but I have heard the sound quality with headphones is poor. Does anyone have any experience with the Vostro? Thanks. sz
Laptop sound quality
I am looking at purchasing a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop but I have seen reviews regarding poor sound quality when using headphones.  Headphones are a must for me.  Does anyone have any experience with the Vostro?  Thanks! sz
I don't find less quality getting my sound - sm
through my home PC. In fact, it's digital, and my phone is analog, so I think it's better. It can be altered further with different headphones, too. Of course, I still do sometimes get some pretty bad dictation quality sometimes, but it apparently comes from the equipment at the dictating hospital.
I have no problems with sound quality...

so I think it just depends on your equipment/platform/specific hospital, etc.

Integrated Sound quality

Hi.  I'm looking into buying a new computer from Dell, which has the integrated 7.1 audio.  Does anybody use this?  Is the sound quality good enough or should I think about adding a Sound Blaster card?

winscribe and sound quality question (sm)
I presently work for a company that used to have the hospitals call into their own in-house Dictaphone system.  Recently, we have switched to using Winscribe and I notice that the sound quality has deteriorated.  Why would this be?  I'm not familiar with Winscribe or how it works so I'm not sure if the work is being re-recorded from the original Dictaphone system or what.  Any thoughts?
Don't know if you can, but the sound quality is sure to be atrocious. Gets worse with every

Sound quality is 10x better than Express Scribe...sm
The settings are not as complicated either.

There are no preloaded files. You download your own files. I transcribed actual voice files using the trial version.
I usually tell them about the poor sound quality and if it is not rectified I quit! nm

Absolute worst quality sound files in my
20 year career, the worst ESL dictators (and I currently do about 95% ESL), horrible management, system not user friendly, technical support a joke, .....   I wouldn't wish this company on my worst enemy.    Don't know anything about the other company, though several recent posts about them don't have anything good to say.
Excellent sound quality and just leave me alone to work! nm

switching from one account to another, not enough work, repetitive stress injuries, accounts continually changing they way they want things done, uninvited guests, slow ISPs, inability to get broadband, accounts having server problems, lack of proper reference materials at hand (meaning MT word books and dictionaries), relying on Google 100%, visiting this and other boards, chocolate cravings, food cravings, extreme boredom, extreme fatigue, delirium.

All I ask is for clearly speaking dictators and good sound quality and I would be a

I have no problem with the sound quality using Express Scribe.
There is a new version of ES available for download and you can improve files with their special audio processes. Bytescribe wave player is expensive (compared to free with Express Scribe) and ES is more versatile, IMO, having used both. ES will play a wide variety of file types, including .dss.
Depending on sound quality, lookups, fill-ins, ESLs, that's

Winscribe is fine where I work. But if a mic is malfunctioning, sound quality is suboptimal.

Hahah!a! Funny typo: not quality 'scAre', quality 'scOre'. LMAO!...nm

I think that depends on the quality. Do you honestly think there is good quality just throwing every
MT on any account like they are. I also think QA has been told to not waste a lot of time on blanks so I think the hospitals are getting a lot more blanks. I certainly have more when I get in a hospital I dont know and they talk 100 miles an hour.
I thought quality was a given. Speed and quality are not mutually exclusive. sm

I maintain 99% accuracy above on my reports.  However, the original question was regarding personal preference, and I have stated mine, and I respect your opinion as well.  :-)    I do think if I was working in an office or hospital setting, the setup you mentioned might be more profitable in the long run.  There are too many interruptions and such when you have other people running in and out, phones ringing, etc.

I doubt that anyone but me really cares about the lines per hour it takes for me to do a report.  They just want an accurate report in a timely manner.  I take pride in my work, and would never just slop something out for the sake of the almighty buck.   And, as an added incentive, I work for 2 companies, and one of them has my name on each report.  I don't have a problem with it, but I did think it was a bit unusual at first.

Oh well ... I must confess that what I'd TRULY like is to be paid lots of money to just sit and play Battle Phlinx on Pogo all day long, but as of yet, no such luck.

Yeah, and look WHO gets to suffer through the (nm)
xx
Does anyone else suffer from ophthamologic migraines?
If so, how long do yours last and what do you do for them.  I have been almost blind for the last week.  Doctor said might take up to 6 weeks go clear up.
I suffer from seasonal depression
and am using light therapy.  This has been about two or three weeks now, and I cannot believe the difference in my mood.  It is wonderful.  I put in a fluorescent light fixture in my office that takes four 4-foot bulbs  I bought bulbs at Home Depot.  They had a large selection.  I bought ones that say they imitate sunlight.  Now working under them for my regular shift, I have felt a huge difference in my mood.  I thought I was going to have to go on medication, but now I feel so much better.
Agree...no animal has to suffer for me...
I have been using the wild yam - so far, so good. ?
Why make your child suffer...
just because you think medication is wrong? If the medications will help, why not use it? My son was on dexadrine from the time he was 2 until he was 12 and is now excelling in high school at the age of 16. Yes, his growth was stunted while on the meds, (he's now 6 foot 2, 290 pounds!), but what a trade off!! He was able to concentrate and get his work done without disrupting the class and we never had to do an IEP or make things difficult for the teacher. (By they way, they do have other chidren in their classroom who need to be taught, not just yours.) We also didn't just limit his sugar...it was forbidden! He did not have anything with sugar or sugar substitute (same reaction) until he was around 14. Now he doens't even like it and does not crave it. He's a big guy because of his family genes.

Meds are not a bad thing if taken corrently and monitered. My son say his doc twice a month for weight checks and to see if any changes needed to be made to his meds.

Another thing you need to look at is the childs IQ. My son tested at age 4 with a 168 IQ, which was part of his problem, not just his ADHD. He was bored in school and that caused part of his 'attention' problems.

You can't rely on the school to make changes for just your child, you need to take control and if that means meds, it means meds. It makes me sad knowing that a child is suffering because they aren't getting the meds they need. Same way I would feel knowing a child wasn't getting an antibiotic or asthma medicine if needed. It's sad. javascript:editor_insertHTML('text','');

I didn't know it had been discussed either - sm
I don't visit here often.

I have two kids at home (12 and 13) and I roll in the morning and then start to slide at the half way point myself.

I start at 7:30 and take a break about 11:30 or so for lunch, then work some more.

If I am really dragging... I start day dreaming a bit. Okay, a lot. Means i have to go back and read everything more thoroughly but the typing part gets done a heckova lot faster.

This has been discussed extensively. There is

This is the big problem here and what we discussed
Never had famine, still don’t.I had 2 children and worked out of the home. How can you let yourself go downhill and just say I sit here trying to make it. That is why this profession has gone down because of no one wanting to leave the house to have a job, just want to sit at home because they have a child. What happens when no money at all, do you still just sit there trying to make it. I had more get up and go, I guess, than what I am reading on here now days. I always wanted to have things like a roof over my head, food for the family, nice vacations and I worked for it. No wonder the companies are offering less and less money to do this job because they have found people willing to wait on things. Before long the workers are going to have to pay the employers to have a job.
TOOOO MUCH!! Which is why it was discussed BEFORE we had kids! LOL
He is adament that the kids will have balance, structure and guides (apparnetly as long as his mother does not object)...fine by me as I was raised that way...however, trying to get a kid to face facts when they were told it was not their fault and they they should be in trouble.....well gee...that is not a recurring line I want used in the house and have yet to get him to admit he was wrong since she told him he was not!  Hence, huge morality issue he needs to learn for his life.   Talking to him all you get is "they say"  instead of I did, I was wrong, etc....she has it in his head he is right, they are wrong!!!!  Our actions are our doing whether good, bad or indifferent.
It sounds like you and BF have discussed a split up.

At least that's what I think I read below in one of the posts.

The economy of our country is in the toilet right now.  Very few things are secure.  Times are tough and fixing to get tougher.  If there is any way you can slow down, get your bearings, get into a halfway secure position --- your mental health will be better.

You need your mental health in order to be there for your kids.

Have you considered moving the "molehill" instead of the "mountain"?

If the BF has already been approached about the split, what is his position on HIM MOVING out and not you and the kids?  That would be lots less destructive for them.

Also, I wouldn't count on any PT transcription job anywhere right now.  Trust me on this.  This job type is so fluid right now - it's a circus.

I wouldn't move from square one until I got the FT at the hospital.  DON'T MOVE UNTIL YOU FIGURE OUT IF YOU CAN GET THAT JOB.  Then get into it, see what you have to work with.

Secondly, I would not leave myself dependent on the BF for anything but money, and then the courts can get it for you if he decides he doesn't like this, gets a new honey, or gets a "wild hair" and decides to leave the country.

Don't depend on him for babysitting, don't "be nice" and try to share the babysitting.  DON'T DO IT.  Get yourself positioned so you are calling all your shots.

I know MT looks good on paper when they are selling you an idea of working from home and STAYING WITH YOUR KIDS, but it doesn't work.  The mom ends up the zombie and life becomes like the twilight zone.  I know.  I tried it.  You need to get at the hospital, get daycare, get your childsupport coming in, .........and then think about moving or even buying.  In fact, if you wait, the housing prices are expected to fall even more.  There was an article in our paper about it again yesterday.  Hold off.  If you rent, if the plumbing goes, if the A/C or heater goes......the landlord is responsible.

I don't know if this will give you some things to consider but I hope so.  I raised my kids by myself (of course it was different times but the men were the same, ugh!) and at some times I didn't seem them for having to work so many hours.  I wish now I had just gotten me a State worker job, 8-5, insurance, retirement, gotten a little house even if I had gotten on a program where it was federally assisted, and gone that route.  We could have been together as a family, I wouldn't be doing this horrible life I have now with trying to still work at 60 years old with no place to live.

Think about the future - it's right around the corner.  The kids will be gone and trust me, they won't look back even if they love you lots.  They will be BUSY and you will be an afterthought.  All things in moderation.

First thing - DON'T MOVE, let him move.

Second thing - WAIT FOR THE FT JOB.

Third thing - Be getting that child support coming in.

I wish you the best.

p.s. Even if you decide you just have to move and rent even a 2-BEDROOM...it can certainly be done.  My ggg grandparents raised 13 kids in a 2 bedroom old farm house.  Kids slept all over the place!    You and the older kid could share if it's a girl/or if a boy, let him share a bedroom with one of the little ones, and you put the other little one in your room and make a game of it - they will all pitch in and later you all will have "war stories" to talk about when everbody is grown up.

Discussed this with my boss yesterday
She said she had employees who are missionaries and as long as they maintain a legal residence in the US for tax purposes, she has no problem with it.
This is also discussed on the company board

I know this has been discussed before but how long does it take to relisten to reports that you have
typed. I know some people do that and some dont. So far I have done okay on QA but if I dont I was just wondering how much extra time per day you figure you need to relisten to reports. I usually do about 30 to 35 medium length reports acute care or 1800 to 2000 lines. What errors do you find mostly when you relisten or is it not worth the extra time it takes. Just curious.
And we've discussed this before on this board. Life is not that
simple for me. If I leave the state, I leave my elderly parents that I care for and I leave my minor children because they legally cannot cross state lines without their father's permission. He's not going to OK that. Besides, I'm happy doing MT. Who ever said I was not happy doing MT? It works great with all the family I have to care for. I just wish I hadn't wasted time and money going to college, especially when the job market in my state got oversaturated with other college grads.
