new grads and what they have to offer
very little experience, work very cheaply, anything just to get an opportunity. What a reality check it will be for them when they realize theyre going nowhere in this business after a couple of years, no raises, no opportunity for advancement, and still be making the same (or lower)$12/hr they started out at, all the while cost of living going up. Bright futures, I think not. Burn out, YES. These newbies will have to work even harder than we have to right now to make ends meet, maybe even take a second job. You are fortunate to have your own accounts and your own work so..... I don't think you understand whats going on in the world of MTs that work for these companies who work them to death.
Our Co hired about 20 grads from

Hi Rae,

The company I work for hired 20 graduates all at one time from Med Workshops and they did well.  This was about 1-1/2 yrs ago.

We contracted with Med Workshops to provide the graduates based on parameters we were looking for.  Because our Company spelled out the training, it was hard to go wrong.  Students got a break on the normal tuition costs.

I understand they are a medical transcription staffing school; the only one I know of.

Who Hires M-Tec grads?
I just finished my coursework at M-TEC.  I can't wait for my test to be graded...and I'm itching to find a job.  Before my test, I was 95%.  I'm wondering if anyone knows what companies routinly hire from M-Tec so I can go looking now and not have to wait till I am able to access the COC on M-TEC's website?
Don't forgot all those grads that are
just to get their foot in the door because they couldn't land a job. I haven't been there in a while, but the CS forum used to have a bunch of those kind of posts.
There IS A CHARGE FOR GRADS, . . .

and I don't want anyone misled either.

Clearly, grads pay $50 for the classes and another $49.95 for the review guide.  This is still a great price, but IT IS NOT FREE FOR GRADS OR ANYONE ELSE.  Perhaps you signed up for the classes before the fees was implemented

I do not care to violate copyright laws by posting the content of posts by Susan the grad forums.

However, for anyone without access to the M-Tec grad forum, there is indeed a fee for the RMT or CMT classes.

because they know new grads want 6-8 cpl just like they were told in school
and besides, like I said, takes too much time. So you take on a newbie, train them while paying them 2 cpl.   Then they get their "experience" then they move on to greener pastures. Meanwhile the MT in India will still do it for 2 cpl, only now they are trained... get it?
And at least some of those college-grads went to school
so you'd think they would have an idea of not only the standard of living here, but the wages as well, and what things like food, gas & housing cost. Others were trained by American MTs or MTSOs. If nothing else, they should feel a little bit guilty about ripping off the country that is sending so much work their way.
There is no charge for grads to take the classes.
I just finished the course and signed up for the classes and did not pay a dime. You may be confused by the $50 Review Guide that is recommended to study with.
apol accepted!
maybe i should have stressed it more, but hopefully it was received as intended.
I just accepted a position
and don't want to leave it up right now.  I things don't work out I will repost it.
Apology accepted!
x
apology accepted!
No hard feelings - ok ? Thanks again.....

apology accepted
Thank you.
If someone is that dispicable, to have accepted
a gift and then said she hadn't, the shame is on her, but I would much rather give 10 or 20 bucks in case she hadn't.  Instant karma has a way of grabbing it back..just my take on life.  "It is much better to give than to receive"
Apology accepted, but
if you truly do not want to offend someone, then do not insinuate, suggest at, or call them names of any kind. My post in no way insinuated that anyone of my age should not or would not post on MySpace...I just said I didn't and answered the OP's age question. I did not deserve to be called ANYthing for doing that...and yes, it offended me, but your apology is accepted. thank you.
Apology accepted, but...sm

Again, please, I don't want it to sound like I give a hoot if her parents are divorced or not, that's not my issue.

I was simply asking for opinions mostly regarding teens working and paying for their expenses themselves, like gas, shopping, etc.

Let me state my point clearly...Do your teens work? If so, how old were they when they started? Do you feel that teens working interferes with their school and if so, how? These are the things I'm wondering about, NOT divorced parents, sheesh!

He accepted the rate. He said ....
I wouldn’t be a good business person if I didn’t at least ask for a lower rate– but your response was more than satisfactory in convincing me that your services are worth the rate you proposed. Thanks for being so thorough and we would happy to pay 10CPL.

I start Wednesday. I'm so glad I stuck to my guns.
hen why do so many ads clearly state *must have X amount of exp. or New Grads Need Not Apply? sm

Then why do so many ads clearly state *must have X amount of exp. or New Grads Need Not Apply? sm

Totally untrue...M-TEC & Andrews grads are...
still allowed to test.  Please stop giving false information.
Why? M-TEC & Andrews produce the absolute best grads.

Many companies hire new grads for SR editing.

My daughter was accepted in to Barbizon, but I said NO WAY..
I would not want to put a child through that. No I did not contact them. My neice is a model and she was there doing some stuff and had my daughter with her. They even offered to pay for everything..they just wanted her. They were going to put my neice and my daughter in some shampoo commercial or something. Bad idea I think.
I got your apology and it is absolute accepted!
Thanks!
accepted IC position with another company

I took their QA test, passed, was offered a position.  I accepted and have been waiting to train and get going for a week now.  My understanding is that their trainer only trains 2 days/wk and now her PC is in the shop. I understand things happen so this is not too big a deal to me.  I'm still working with another company so it's not as if I have no $$$ coming in.  Now here's where I'm starting to get second thoughts...

Apparently, the admin has already added me to her email list because I'm getting daily account information, status of out of TAT files, etc. No biggie. BUT along with those emails I also recieved an email going to everyone stating that she is sorry for the delay in paychecks because she is JUST now getting paid and has JUST sent out 1099s. FYI, they pay monthly.  I'm concerned because if I'm only getting paid once a month, I definitely can't afford to be waiting even longer for a paycheck. I really wanted to get started on this job, been wanting to do QA again for a while but I'm starting to wonder if "delay in pay" is a regular thing with them. I could ask her directly but I doubt anyone would honestly say "yeah, sure, we're always getting paid late" to a new IC.

I was going to quit my current MT company and go fulltime QA'ing but now I'm thinking I should stick with the MT work (even though I really wanted to get away from it) and do the QA PT instead.

Funny...as I'm writing this, it kinda seems like a "duh" question.

Not anymore. Only Career Step grads without experience
nm
I've never heard a bad remark from Andrews or M-Tec grads.
I've heard about the grader being wrong/ambiguous, and I've heard about the mistakes in the course.

From what I've heard, I also think the course is geared toward producing MTs to work for the big cheap companies. It's kind of like a (fill in the blank)______ company MT-maker assembly line.

meant to include ebonics is used and accepted
in this town. The schools are 95% segregated in the town. Very old southern roots. They do not care for change. Teaching children to speak properly is considered taking away from their "heritage". Why we moved here? Not really sure. People are very nice though. You are in the minority if you can speak, write, or read properly. Also, it is 100 miles or so SW of Columbus, GA, 30 miles or so NE of Albany
the accepted way to figure line/minute sm
is that one minute equals 10 lines. I guess you have to figure out your line rate from that. Obviously it can be less lines if the dictator is slow and more lines if the dictator is fast. At what seems to be the going rate of 8 cpl these days I guess it would be about 80 cents per minute?

I have worked on a minute basis and it all seemed to equal out pretty much the same unless you are getting a lot of "motor-mouths."

Hope that helps
I am not young either, but I got accepted to an accredited ultrasound program
Yesterday I took the plunge and got accepted to a degree offering program for ultrasound tech. However, I am starting to wonder about my decision. It is 18 months, at first part time then going full time hands on in the clinic. It will be a BS degree and will give me the education and ability to sit for the exam. But, and I say a big but... The cost of tuition is 33K and there is limited financing and no financial aid for this. Then, I went surfing to see if there was a site for ultrasound techs out there like this board to see what the techs were saying and I find it is "like a cattle call out there." They were talking about spending time and money in school and then it is a very competitive job market, hard to get answers on resumes, etc.
I spoke to a girl who was an RN yesterday who works in the hospital during the day and at Walmart at night. I told her about ultrasound school, after MT was dying, and she said, "Oh, you are going through doing that to..." I got the feeling the course work is as difficult as nursing, which I know is tough. I am not talking myself out of this mind you and I am glad to be accepted to a good school... but the what ifs: in 18 months after 33K, hard studying while I work as an MT and support my child alone.. what if it is a cattle call and end up working several jobs or at Walmart? Thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Well you all convinced me! I called this morning and accepted the job! Looks like I'll be comin
home!  I'll be "seeing" you guys around!  Thanks for all the great advice!
Accepted a job with a new company, gave two weeks notice to my old company..

Old company, let me go before two weeks was up.  New company, said they were having trouble getting me set up and my equipment ready, but they would pay me while I waited.  It's been a month, still no check from new company even though I was told it was "in the mail."  I have no income and am at a loss.

I have a signed offer letter from the new company, contracts, etc.  I applied for unemployment, but old company is saying I quit and technically I am currently employed with the new company!  New company is not returning calls or answering email.

What should I do!?!?!?!

I started sending my resume out today, but the process of getting a new job will take at least two weeks and I need money now to catch up on what I'm behind!

Has this changed?
Congrats!
Will all MTs be changed over to ASR?
x
no, nothing has changed.
Just a very bossy lady who waits until the last minute to give me the work, sometimes three to five days later than it came in, and then demands it ASAP. It isn't my fault she cannot keep up with the work.
Fed law changed that
We got a notice last year that the feds required they get 911 in place in all areas by the end of the year.  When we first got it, we had no 911 service.  We had to use the 911 service twice due to my son being so ill and it worked fine, however afterwards we had to reboot the modem and wait for half an hour to get the phone back.  I think having a regular line just for local calls is advisable and using Vonage for long distance only or work is the safest way to go.
Has changed now though

My husband  - now ex - has been in trucking for over 25 years and all of our friends have and are and were.  It has changed a lot and also depends on whether you own your own or drive for someone else.  Kind of like IC versus employee.  Also a lot have also been outsourced as there are a lot of foreigners driving the trucks now a days.   There is such a similarity between the two (MT and trucking) but this started with trucking sooner.   Just like MT you do not make money unless you are moving and when that truck has to pay two salaries it is hard.  But like you said, your dad raised four kids but in this day and age it would be hard to do.   If you are cross country it is so hard watching expenses, etc.  Again just like MT it was a good career and if you have been in it for years it is still decent pay but to start out in it, would not do that.  Just like MT as I have very good accounts, make very good money but when someone talks to me about starting out in it, I do shudder a little as I read such horror stories on this board and I know it is not as easy to do as it was when I started 20+ years ago.  I do still yearn for the open road sometimes though.  It is a way to see the US.   Drove through 42 of the 48 states here and Canada.  Anyway that is my thoughts for what they are worth.

changed
Yes there have been changes but not all companies abide by them either. Some stuff comes up to be all subjective though and some companies QA team is quite picky. Obviously your own accounts still like what you do so I wouldn't worry about it.
Maybe you changed the
spellcheck setting so that capitalized words would be spellchecked, which is a very smart thing to do.

I don't know how to make the change the poster below mentioned, but I'd rather have it spellcheck names than not spellcheck capitalized words, especially since I have to cap allergies.

I just changed ..
I did start at 4 a.m. but was finding it very difficult to get up consistently. Now I start at 5, and it's much easier. Due to kid's activitise it is often 10:30-11:00 pm before I get to bed, and I just personally could not do it.

so, you would have to make going to bed early a priority ..

Good luck to you!
I would think that if ANYTHING is changed
such as that, the MT would have to be notified. If you have a signed contract stating a line is XXX, then would they not be in violation for not disclosing the fact that the contract is now in violation?
I just changed my IT

Thanks for the tips.  I just recompiled my Instant Text glossaries and then went into the Importer and created abcz glossaries.  I hope this helps.  I really need to be making 300 to 500 lph because my huby was just laid off and no one is hiring.

Thanks again!!!!

I think you are right. I think they may have changed back to what it should have been all along.

Things have not changed
at Transhealth and one just needs to check back on past postings a week ago and you will read the bad experiences people have had with TH. Good luck if you go with them as you are going to need it!
I changed ATT LD to SBC business sm
line. Will see how long it lasts. Took me FOREVER to get to a LIVE American person who could do this for me!

My margins are changed!

Just went into my acct for a clinic in which I am an IC being paid 12 cpl in MS Word.  I have not worked for a week.  Today, I notice the margins are changed.  Does this change what constitutes a line (isn't it 65 characters per line)???  I go into their system and type on their MS Word via HSI.

I am dumbfounded.

The needs of the client have changed.
They can say they need the work whenever the fancy strikes them. You can either provide it or not. That is just the way this business works.
Not unless something has changed recently...
I have worked at a job where I had to use both the Lanier and a Dictaphone.  They are two very separate things.
I don't think so...they have changed the protocol--sm
for numbers, in particular, at least three times in the last five years. I know, because it gets annoying to have to change the way I do things everytime they want to sell another book for $80 a pop. They started out with numbers 1 through 10 being spelled out and using numbers above 10. Then it was numbers instead of roman numerals, and then it was back to using all numbers and not spelling them out....shheeesh make up your minds! and that is all within the last five 5 years. I swear they do it just to sell more books and not because any of it is right or wrong, or *standard*, because it isn't. JMO
If it grossed you out, you should have changed
Not prude, eh? Involved a cat? This could mean only a few things (mating, eliminating, shedding).

Why possibly cost someone their job because you are so delicate?

You were fortunate to have been talking to someone friendly enough to go beyond the acquisition of information.

What is up with the American workforce? Are we all now just a bunch of whiny crybabies and tattletales.

I wouldn't want you to work on my team.
