Yeah, but are these other companies trying to put stores in every market in the country?
I think that is what makes Wal-Mart so "evil" and scares me so badly.  Soon we won't have ANYONE left to buy our goods from because they force all the other competitors out of business (particularly the small business owners) and then we are FORCED to buy everything from overseas countries/Wal-Mart.
Which companies do we know do NOT offshore?

re: Which companies do we know do NOT offshore?
Transcend.
If all they had was the offshore companies
to transcribe, do you know how unhappy the M.D.'s would be.  They are already complaining.  There would be enough jobs if no one worked for the offshoring ones.  Idealistic?  Yes, but.............
Companies that offshore should have to pay a

You can thank offshoring and the companies who offshore for most of this. SM

Been in the business well over 20 years and I am working twice as hard for half as much.  It started with offshoring and the big MTSOs who bolted the US like their pants were on fire.  They used the excuse that were not enough US MTs.  LIES.  All LIES.  They forced the smaller MTSOs to charge less.  We got paid less.  Many of the smaller MTSOs got gobbled up by the Squid (MQ).  Now there are only one or two superpowers and they all offshore.  Some of them lie about it, some are very open.  This business is not even close to what it should be as far as making a living.

So many companies offshore that there aren't
enough companies that don't to take on the displaced MTs.   Standing up for what you believe in is a good thing, but when it comes to putting food on the table you do what you have to do and then you have those that just don't care, give them a paycheck and that is all that matters.
They also try to place you with companies that offshore.
t
There are good companies that do not offshore -hopefully will never have to.
nm
I know of 2 companies, neither of whom offshore, that are slammed with
overflow from the MQ shutdown. I think clients are looking for anyone that works on platforms they use to pick up the slack.
Transcend DOES offshore. I worked for them
for about a month, and when I asked during my interview, the recruiter told me that they have some accounts that are sent overseas. I asked this question because I had lost my job before to outsourcing. She just reassured me that there were plenty of jobs that they didn't outsource to keep me busy, but this was not the case either as I never had work on my account.
If we boycott working for companies that offshore,
boycott medical providers that offshore, and write to our politicians, maybe we can change things. I won't go to any local doctor that uses an offshored transcription outsource. Hit 'em where it counts, right in their big fat wallets. They put us out of work and reduced our wages, so why do we owe them any loyalty? Why should we pay higher medical bills when they're too cheap to pay us what we're worth? Pretty soon, we'll all be on unemployment, foodstamps and Medicaid. One way or another, they'll have to cough up.
You idiot, there are plenty of jobs with companies that DON'T offshore. Go somewhere else and

quit your raggin on this board.

all 3 major credit-reporting companies offshore
Equifax
Experian
TransUnion

all 3 offshore your information

there's just no fighting it by refusing to do biz with them

the only fight to hold is with the govt for allowing this ridiculous practice

Working for offshore owned companies and feeling

I have an idea...we can picket those facilities who use companies that offshore. sm
Every patient going in and coming out of that hospital/facility will know their private medical record is going offshore to be transcribed and therefore, there is risk of identity theft, lack of privacy, etc Just like those for ProLife and the like.

I think that will bring attention to the matter!

I know a huge hospital system in my town outsources their TX to MQ, who is now CBay, and now everything will be offshore. I think I will make my point and concerns when I have picket signs outside the President's window in a public area, so as not to be trespassing.

Free Speech in America.....right!!!
AAMT/AHDI is run by and for the management of companies that offshore!
I too used be a member and an officer in the local chapter.  I too attended all the activities.  I have since let my CMT lapse.  Never once has being a CMT earned me a better job or more money, it's all about the experience and the quality of work you can produce, not whether or not you're a CMT!
Today is different and you cannot fight companies who LEGALLY can offshore work.
So all Americans refuse to buy goods, shop at stores, or work for companies who offshore.  That leaves a mess.  Do you realize a lot of American companies are actually owned by foreigners?  Get real and move into 2005.  You are going to spend a lot of time boycotting once you do the research.  I doubt you will be able to shop or work at all.
I guess you forgot about India and all the other offshore companies they deal with, ASR and EMR.
That is the plan. They have hired all management lately that have been involved very heavily with overseas companies. Now why do you think that is. I dont think you see the whole plan here.
Bad news today regarding taxing companies who offshore..Microsoft SM

says they will hire more offshore employees and cut US employees because of the cost.  This could cause our jobs also to go to offshore companies.

I was told today that all the big computer companies offshore their technical service. Does anyone
x
The companies I have worked for did this.
I am not sure how long they were kept, or what media was used to keep them on. I am an IC for the company I work for now, and I have been asked more than once by the doctors office to pull up files over a month old. I always refer them to the service owner. It would depend on what was in the contract.
Has anyone worked for different companies
same platform but so totally different line counts? That shows you right there what we're up against, there is no standard measurement by which to pay us. I have never seen anything so ridiculous in my entire life. All of these supposed "MT friendly" platforms have the capability to count lines "cheat" us any way they want, and nobody can control that. Offshoring is just one of the issues. I have been to company X and make 800 lines in a day, do the same amount of work and work on the same platform for company Y and make 1200 lines a day, yet another company Z and average 1500 lines a day. Company X is ripping off bigtime. Post these companies names here and lets stop working for them. Thats one way to try and make a change.
What not ask these other companies that you worked for what they use?

They should be able to tell you if it's a publicly-available system or just their own.

Only trying to help. Geesh!

Okay - seriously 20 - worked for 2 companies twice each.
And actually hired to work at 4-5 others but passed on them for various reasons. Thinking I am picky or selective? LOL
I have worked for a lot (too many) of companies, and this is the norm. nm
nm
I've worked for several companies using this VR
I make on average $20-$26 an hour with the editing at 4cpl/straight typing 9-10 cpl 65 char with headers and footers and templates. I've been using it for several years though. There are several job ads for this software.
Has anyone else had this happen any companies you worked for>??

Just wondering if anyone else has had the company they work for decide to pay less money, in this case 1 cpl less, if you don't make your minimum line requirement?  I have never had this happen until now.  Its not just me, this will apply to everyone.  What do you all think?

I worked for 2 different companies with Emdat.

The first one was not too bad.  Limited number of dictators, demographics filled in properly, could move right along.

The second company sucked.  Unlimited number of doctors, demographics hit and miss, they really had no idea how to use Emdat and didn't care to find out.  Templates poorly made.  Quit cause of the low line count.

You need the pedal specifically for Emdat, which cost under $100 a couple years ago.  I had very little problem with mine.  Had to use a Y connector with my keyboard.  Had a different pedal for my .wave file work and a tape account I had so there were 3 pedals under my desk.  Hope this helps....

the market will pay what the market will bear...sm

just the fact that jobs are posted for this pay means people are taking it. You have to remember - we are in a global marketplace now. We are competing against people from India, Thailand, Cambodia for these jobs. If the Mexicans could figure it out, we would be competing against them too. It's like washing dishes. Washing dishes isn't easy. Why does washing dishes only pay $5.50 an hour? Because they can find people to wash dishes for $5.50 an hour. Not only that, but MT work was getting cost prohibitive for a lot of people. That's why some other really, really smart people said, "let's find a way to make computers do this! Then we can sell the programs so docs can buy programs instead of paying MT's." Then some other really really smart people said, "let's not even have docs dictate. Let's have them point and click!" And so MT's are also competing against VR and EMR.

You may say ..."If a company offers me 7 to 9 cpl, I let them know that it is an insult to expect an experienced, highly skilled Transcriptionist to be offered such low pay and I refuse to work for them." But if your current job goes bye-bye, and you're scrambling out in the market and that's all that's out there....well, you get the picture. If you want the job, you take the job for that pay. Otherwise, yes, it's get a job at WallyWorld. Your choice.

indeedy i have worked for companies who "control"
how much you earn by the dictation you get.  Don't get too many lines in a day, or you will get the crappiest dictators on earth for the next three days of the week.  OR, you will get ESLs that slow you waaaayyyy down.  Been there, I know how rotten these companies can be, and I know exactly what you mean.  These company owners are not your friends and not fair...  Don't have my head in the sand, or maybe I had to EARN my pay!!  They have good dictators that I haven't transcribed in years....but that's okay. I am used to the crappy dictators now, and get my work done very quickly, so no more slowing me down, until they decide to put me on a NEW hospital or something.  Yeah, you caught on quickly!!!  Good luck to you.  Once you get onto all of the crappy dictators, your job will be secure.  Who else can do all of the crap?
I've worked for companies that needed people
specifically to do certain reports.  I have been hired to exclusively do ERs and discharge summaries before.  It wasn't cherry picking either.  They needed someone to catch up their backlog and keep the reports within TAT permanently.  Evidently, other people were cherry picking and bypassing these report types because they're not as good of money makers as Ops or H&Ps.
So, are you working for the same company. I have worked for 2 companies and I have noticed a huge
difference in the lines I got from each company. The accounts were similar. I never ever got what your talking about but I would average 600-700 lph at one company and the other one  I was lucky to get 400 lph so then I figured out they didnt pay for spaces, footers, headers etc.. and that does factor into your line counts on that platform.
Two of the best companies I've worked for didn't make me test. Makes you wonder if...sm
these MTSOs that mandate so many "tests" aren't just trying to see how many actual reports they can get transcribed for free. I could understand maybe a written test and one very in-depth transcription test, but 6 is utterly ridiculous. I would have definitely passed on that too and then told the MTSO exactly why.
Please post offshore topics on Offshore Concerns board. (NM)

Thank you.

When you market your services with a
business name and a business license, it shows the doctors or hospitals that you are representing yourself as a professional business and are not just a homemaker or housewife trying to make a few extra bucks. They will treat you with more respect and take you more seriously, and in turn will be willing to pay you a fair rate as a respectable businesswoman. Think about any business in your community or town. They all first procure a business name and a business license before they open their doors. You may be working from home, but you can will present yourself in this fashion. I would also suggest obtaining a P.O. Box to use as your business address instead of using your home address. Believe me, this works. I have been running a successful small MT business from home for over 20 years now, and I support my entire family on my earnings.
job market update
If your skills are excellent and your experience and references speak well of you, then I believe the job market is pretty good.

But!!!!

You have to look carefully at the prospective jobs.

Please, I beg of you, for the good of ALL OF US, please please please do not take a job for less than 8.5 cpl! Please!
It's a very tough market right now...sm.
I have 8 years experience and have been testing left and right for the last 3 months. I have passed several tests only to hear about the company being put on a hiring freeze and I am added to their waiting list. I have also tested and done very well and not heard anything back. I finally made the decision that I am going to go to nursing school but right now is not a good time either (my husband has been out of work since April of 2008). He finished his degree and STILL cannot find a job.

Keep faith..it will come through. Maybe instead of having to drive into town, you could send your resume to all the local doctors, dentists, veterinarians, eye doctors, anyone who maybe has been thinking they are too busy to do their own notes. I have heard that this has worked for many people. It is always worth the effort. If you are a good general Transcriptionist too, don't just stop at medical. Send you resume to insurance businesses, lawyers, whatever might be there.

Good Luck and God Bless.
Money Market accounts
MM accounts do have checks, but you are limited to the number of checks that you can write per month - no more than 3 checks to a third party. Rates are usually tiered based on your balance - the more you have deposited, the more interest you will earn.

Are you worried about possible MT job market glut then? I am...

My family went to a flea market that is mostly run and
attended by Hispanics.  There were several vendors selling leather goods, such as wallets, belts, shoes, etc.  DH needed a new wallet so he picked one he liked and opened it up only to find a tag that said "MADE IN INDIA."   (He didn't buy it.)  We didn't look at any of the other leather goods, but found it very ironic that the Hispanics are now importing their "handmade" goods from India.
yeah, in today's job market, the
middle class is supposed to be happy we even have a job.  Forget any idea of getting any appreciation for hardwork, reliability, knowledge, or any of that good stuff, just be "happy" to be working... in my next life, maybe!
So what? 8 cpl is what the market will bear. If you don't want 8, don't take a job that pays

Instead, if I had $345, I'd put it in a money-market acct. - sm
and watch it grow, rather than putting it towards a bunch of fake 'certification' letters after my name, and seeing that money fly away and earn me nothing.
Sixe of MTSO Market
Does anyone know the size of the MTSO market (how many service providers, how many software co's etc. or a good source for this info?
Going back on the market -- any advice?

Hi y'all,

Three weeks ago I began a new job doing acute care at a local hospital (part of CHS). On Friday they told us that our work would be outsourced beginning in April.... Previously I worked at another local hospital for 9 years transcribing Rad and ER notes, echos, etc. I left there because I need expensive orthognathic surgery and their insurance plan has a blanket exclusion against it. Plus I wanted to brush up on my "big four" skills.

Now I am looking for work. Boy have things changed!  I really prefer to work for a hospital or start up my own company again but would work for a service as a last resort. After reading the informative posts here, I have begun compiling a list of "good" and "bad" services so I can avoid certain ones.

Does anyone here have any advice for me? Not general advice about job hunting, but more specific advice about the services -- what to watch out for, etc. I have never done editing/VRT, but apparently that pays less anyway so I don't think I will be doing that.

Thanks.

Really? Hmmmm...you wouldn't know the stock market if it bit you.
Run a stock analysis on MQ under any search engine.  Yahoo stock analysts are the ones I use personally.  There are advisories and analyses of MQ and Philips in the data base EVERY DAY.  There have been "hold" advisories, "sell" advisories, and "buy" advisories any given day.  Sorry to disappoint your disillusioned mind. Obviously NASDAQ and regular trade is better, but they are STILL in the ball game, sorry to disappoint you. And you SHOULD be happy at that if you care about the 1000s of MQ employees who have stocks, etc.  But, gee, sounds like you're just a disgruntled werker!
Does anyone know any basics on money market accounts?

If you're an overseas vendor here's how to market....sm

Go by medical offices and talk to them in your native tongue.  They just LOVE hearing it.   When visiting in places like Florida be sure to ask about the last snow storm they had last winter - that's very impressive!   In the northern states talk about the warm sunny 70 degrees in February in their state and ask if they're ready for that this year.

Be sure to take brochures showing the fabulous quality of work you do.   Be sure you include impressive sentences such as:  "Dr. Jones said he would eat ketchup with the patient to review his lab work."   After all they don't find it cute to type it like it was dictated.... "Dr. Jones said he would catch up with the patient to review his lab work."

Lastly don't forget to give them laminated card including all 25 digits they will have to use to call your native country.  Be sure they're aware that all of your employees in your native country have new names.... Ben, Mary, Thomas and Amy are of course popular choices.   Potential clients like getting a warm fuzzy feeling by talking to "Mary" who has a very heavy accent to the point that they can't understand her talking.  But hey - she has an American name (woo-hoo!) so all is forgiven!
