I don't know how this is even debatable.

Whether we like it or not, the phrase, "single mother," implies to the majority several connotations:
 1. At least one child is involved. (That's a fact).
 2. She is overwhelmed with the responsibility to support her family because she is the sole breadwinner.

"One person working" is a phrase I've never even heard used before probably because it is so vague. It doesn't say anything. Here are two examples of "1 person working." I could go on and one, but why?

 Examples:
 1. My 18-year-old cousin, who has a job, lives at home, goes to college, and is having an absolute blast. She has no bills and has her whole life ahead of her.

 2. Barack Obama, first African-American President of the USA.

Do you see where I am coming from at all? If you can't, I don't know what else to tell you. It is what it is.
