True. I was told this by a friend who is a computer tech at a company

I'm getting set up for DQS and I was told by tech that Smartype is not compatible but(sm)
Shorthand and PDR or PDS (whatever it is, I don't have) would work. I have Smartype too and it's a pain that it won't work.  I was told by others here that what is on the DQS is sufficient.  Hope that's true for me too.  Good luck.
Tech support told me not to load 7.0...

Here is what I told a friend on SSDI sm

First, if you think you can argue and can't stop, you should hear my friend!

I told her...if you can only earn $900 a month, work IC.  You are allowed your expenses over and above that income.  Say your expenses for your business are $150 a month.  You'll need an accountant to help you figure this out, probably, but it is worth it because it is not the same as what you deduct on your taxes.

Okay, so you take the $900 and add the $150. That is $1050 a month you can make.  If you need to type 12,000 a lines a month, (6000 every 2 weeks PT), then you do the math.  This is 8.75 cents a line and that is all the line rate you can afford to make.

She told me that no one would ever allow her to dictate what her line rate is.  Umm yeah they would!  Her principles won't allow her to work for less than 9.5 cpl because she has been an MT for 5 yrs and can only type 2 specialties...  I said, then you'll have to work to the point you can get off of SSDI and pay your bills, but she has too much trouble getting motivated to work, she says.  It is her call (and yours), but if you can't afford to live on the SS money every month, and you must work, then you use the above scenario.  Companies who hire you will have requirements, especially a line count requirement.  You can either not meet it to keep yourself under your income limit and get sacked, or you can work for a lower line rate and pay your bills.

It is up to you.

Tech question for all those computer gurus out there. I have XP Pro. I have DSL but I keep getting
I don't know if there is a problem with the interface between the two or not, but it really doesn't seem to matter if I'm on the VPN or not.  Even if I'm not on the net, just out of the blue I'll get that little icon in the tray that says I can't connect/or am not connected.  This will happen if I'm just surfing the net without VPN, with VPN but without being on the net, or even when I just turn on the computer.  Sometimes I have to reboot 10 times before I can connect.  Any ideas or suggestions would be great.  THANKS for your expertise in this area.  :>)
Looking for computer tech guru to take Vista to XP...sm
I need to move a Vista computer to XP Home.  Bought the Vista system, but is not compatible with a bunch of stuff.  Have a copy of XP Home that will work.  Anybody that can help with that?  TIA
very true, in regards to my friend I mentione below - sm
she could never "prove" he was cheating, though he loved to look, when he gave her crabs it kind of clinched it for her. Of course he denied it, saying it was the motel work had him staying in (he worked for the railroad and was working in New England for a few months). Considering we knew he had to have sex every day, and was only home every 10 days or so, she found that excuse a bit hard to fathom. Needless to say that was the beginning of the end for her.
I had a friend who worked there. It is true. She
escaped before it all went down, but that is absolutely true.

That is probably true but my QA has always told us
to use disk for back and disc for eyes. It might just be a client thing!
My therapist told me that once, and it's true
"Would you associate with these people if they weren't your relatives?"

I said, "Probably not."

She then said, "Just because someone is related to you doesn't give them the right to mistreat you, and it doesn't mean that you have to like or even LOVE them nomatter what. If someone is making you miserable, anyone, be it family member, friend, anything - cut them loose and save yourself the aggravation of dealing with a toxic person."

That has been my policy ever since and I have been living a stress-free life family-wise ever since as well.

These are probably not nice people to begin with. If they want to talk to you and respect you, that's great. If not, it's their loss. We can't control anyone's behavior but our own.
Slow computer, told need more RAM
My computer now has been really slow lately and checked and found to have 768 MB, told I need to increase to at least 1.5 or 2 gb which my computer can handle. My question is this, since it is gonna cost me approximately $140 or so, is this worth it, will I be able to tell the difference in the speed? Right now I am sitting waiting for some words to appear on the screen, very frustrating. Thanks!

True! Computer techs are all foreign. Used to be a good-
still have a tech job are usuallyh IC's, with no job security and no benefits. Lots of computer and microchip manufacturing jobs, that spawned the 'Silicon Valley' in California have gone offshore. Now even radiologists have to worry about their jobs, as some places send the x-rays digitally to Philippines to be read.

What I'd like to know is.... What exactly is going to be LEFT in the United States for US to do? Gas station attendant? Nope... most are self-serve, unless you live in Oregon. Wal-Mart Greeter? Hmm... not old enough (or retired enough) for that. Farm worker? Nope. Mexicans have cornered that market. Waitress? Nope. Lots of eat-in restaurants going belly-up these days. Typesetter? Nope. Newspapers are going extinct. Web designer? Nope. Most people can design their own nowadays. Retail? Same as the restaurants. Teacher? Whoa - talk about an underpaid profession! Nurse? Another underpaid one. Not a good choice for us work-at-home recluses. Truck driver? One of the few jobs where they need people, but to make ends meet these days you have to pretty much live in your truck. Flight attendant? Not a good choice for us recluses who hate to fly. Rap artist? Pretty saturated field. Hair stylist? I don't even comb my OWN hair most of the time, and haven't cut it in years. So I'd be pretty useless unless someone with long hair wanted a French braid. Chef or short-order cook? Not if you only cook TV dinners. (Does that count as cooking?) Dog-walker? Nah - I'm a cat-person. Bike-messenger? In my town, most of em don't live very long. You never see middle-aged bike messengers. Taxi-driver? Nope - the Sikhs have cornered that market. Executive secretary? (What? Go back to wearing heels and pantyhose? NEVER!)
It depends entirely on the company you work for. If their tech support stinks, then
the program will not do well, but if they have good tech support, they can tweak it to work just fine.
Need help quick. I have a friend who just emailed me about an internet company sm

at itidata.org-

It is an internet based training company who guarantees they will find you a job in data entry field if you sign up with them at 99.00 for training, you get manuals, etc. She wanted me to look over this company. Sounds fishy to me. What do you think? Ever heard of them? Any experiences?

Thanks!

At my former company we were told to fix
any obvious errors. I would do this and then send them a copy of errors found (not that they ever fixed it). You have to remember that a lot of times these normals/standards are not typed by MTs, but by clerks.
What company told you this?
Expose them please so the rest of us do not waste our time on them.
My company told us to use disk for
both, though it has been disc for eye and disk for ortho in the past.
My company told me how user
friendly Meditech Magic was.  I have only worked on one system that was worse than MM and that was at YOG.  How anyone gets their lines in I'll never know.
I just told my company to take this VR and put where the sun don't shine today sm

I got tired of the promises...Oh I have gals doing 10,500 lines every 2 weeks in 8 hours a day.  (I think I choked when I heard this.)

It is NOTHING for me to type 8000 lines or BETTER in a week and I get paid way more for my 8000 lines.  I have been looking for another job, either PT to augment the lack of work or FT for the right situation.  First question I ask perspective employer? How do you feel about voice.  I have talked to about 7 or 8 companies in the past 2 weeks.  EVERY ONE OF THEM has said NO WAY, NOT HERE.  It is not very good...you can't expect an MT to edit that crapola for half of what they make typing, unless you don't care the least about quality.  I had two of them tell me it was unmitigated GREED on the part of these company's owners that they even entertain it.

I will say that the cream of the crop of MTs can transcribe so much faster than they edit, it isn't even funny.  Granted, there are plenty of MTs who are stop start, stop start, but when I get into a report, I put the pedal to the floor and TYPE.  I am down to about 1.25:1 or better than that a times.  A 5-minute report will take me under 6 minutes, as a rule, to transcribe.  My accuracy is something above 99.5%. I swear what attracts MTs to editing is the fact that they can't type enough lines to make it work as a career.  Either they can't sit still (that is me most days, but my speed makes up for it), they don't know their stuff all that well, or type slower than a 7-year itch...but they are not the cream of the crop.

Just you all wait...one of these companies who has crappy speech program and crappy "editors" is going to be sued and those extremely substandard reports are going to win the case for the plantiff and the hospital is going to be left high and dry, a couple of doctors with them.  We are here for a reason.  We protect patients and patient care.  We also protect the doctors from litigation.  I used to go through medical records looking for errors, loop holes and other boo boos for a malpractice lawyer.  The better the transcription, the more thorough the dictation, the less I could find proof against a doctor or facility.

We need a national forum for this...newspaper something.

I asked the girl at the company if it had anything to do with expanders. I was told it was more of

This happens to be the company computer.
Just tired of the techs refusing to take responsibility and never fixing anything.
It IS the company computer??

OMG

I never said it was a company computer. nm

This may not hold true if the company is
I believe there was a ruling in the last few months that changed this for the state of New York but since no one answering you (including myself) so far is a tax accountant, you should ask a professional.
This is true for me BECAUSE of the timekeeping my company uses.
Our software only records actual keyboard hours, not just signed-in hours. So unless you are actively typing in a record, you are not considered "working" and the timekeeping stops. If you pee, you're not working. if you're in a chart and stop for more than 5 mins (like researching), you're not working. It always, always takes way more than 8 hours to get in 8 hours of 'work.' It's completely bullsh**.
Yes, I've let my company access my computer.
I used to do the same for one of my MT clients and for remote users as a computer technician.  You can sit there and watch everything they do.  It's not like they're hacking your computer or keylogging your data.  You can shut them down if you're uncomfortable with what they're doing, and delete their access capability when they've finished.
Thanks. My company provided computer has a VPN and I can
goggle with it.
Your own computer with company software
I recently had company software installed on my computer, and it got me wondering something. Have you ever suspected that a company installed any type of tracking or keylogger software on your own computer when they installed your software? I don't think my company did, but I wouldn't put it past some of these companies.
Thanks, but it's a company computer and we not allowed
to do anything to it. Any updating, etc. is done by IT only.

Any other tips or thoughts on my original post appreciated.
In true IC situations, the company CANNOT set your hours...
However, your contract can stipulate that you do a certain amount of work within a certain timeframe.  They also can ASK you for a general idea of when you will be working, but they cannot make you/tell you that you have to be working certain hours.  If they tell you when you have to work, you are not longer an INDEPENDENT contractor - "independent" being the keyword here.  If they set the hours, you are an employee.
That's sooo not true. The company can change
Nice try but you really don't understand what you are talking about.
Not true. I work for a company that offshores.
Good grief.

SO true! My company says they adhere strictly -
to the BOS, but then there are pages and pages of EXCEPTIONS to the rules for different accounts, and even different individual doctors. The docs are the ones who want their notes transcribed, so it just makes sense to do it the way THEY want it.
My company sent me a large tower computer to
I appreciate the computer, but the tower is huge! My desk doesn't have any place for a tower (it's not a computer desk and I can't afford to buy one).  What's a good way to place the tower so that all the wires will fit (other than on top of the desk?).
Not true. "If the company makes money"???
That's funny.

Bonuses are usually based upon production. If you reach a certain production, you receive a bonus.

Whatever criteria is set, one must meet - I agree.

However, if an MT meets that criteria, and the bonus is to be paid on a certain date, they are delinquent in pay if the company does not pay on that date. The company set the time...not the MT.

I'd still seek a legal remedy.
Your husband tech guys are not the bible. You have go give access for tech sm
support to get onto your computer. Just sit there and watch everything they do. If you still feel uncomfortable do not take the job.
Spoken from the true heart of a company owner (inside)
we read all kinds of things on this site. Most of it terrible things that are done to us. Companies making gross amounts of money over our backs and to spend it buying other companies for gross amounts of money. This company knew what they were doing long before they did it, don't tell me or anyone they didn't. They never even considered this woman let alone knew she was having surgery. You guys don't think that way. You don't see our faces and feel whatever you do to make a profit justifies the means. I am not a religious person but I do know what goes around comes around. Chew that.

As far as "preparing ourselves," how do you do that when pay is low, you have to work umteen hours for a halfway decent line count, and then get let go at Christmas time?

As far as short-sightedness? What is astounding is you would even say such a thing as you are probably sitting by a Christmas tree done done by Neiman Marcus. It is hard to save any money with what is happening to the transcriptionists today.

Do not answer this with attacking me. I don't answer trivial, cruel people.
Agree. You could be a Surgical Tech or Respiratory Therapy or a Med. Tech. nm

When buying a new computer would you use a company locally that builds new computers or go with Dell
or a large outfit like that. This local company has been around awhile. Not sure what to do about buying a new computer that is going to be compatible with just about all MT jobs.
How about your husband tells the friend to tell his female friend to lose the #?

A friend of a friend is taking CareerStep - sm
she is under the misguided idea that she will be making very good $ upon completing the course (a friend of hers supposedly makes $55K a year). I told her no way, at least not starting out and not unless all the factors click together, i.e. good typing speed, good pay (not for a newbie), good dictators (unlikely) and dedication to working hard. I told her what I make after 5 years (16K) but that is PT and I have the potential to double that if I would push myself, not procrastinate so much (I web surf way too much) and work more than I already do. I am not a fast typist but am good at what I do. I will be surprised if she follows though. She told me she'd call me when she finished the course, I just hope she is ready for reality.
I was told I needed 2 phone lines, but was told I was dialing into the doctors' system. What woul
